wiki updates -> help menu + similar applications

I've added two items to the wiki. 1.) Under "User Interface Discussion," I added: "Help Menu." I laid out how the menu is currently, how it could possibly be changed to look, and also possible additions to it, to make it a "real" help menu. 2.) "Similar Application" after the "External Links" button. I went out on a limb and decided that we need screenshots of other apps functional parts. I guesss under these app pages, people could also list any feature(s) they really like as an abstract attempt to sway developers to add that functionality to Inkscape. Please post any screenshots, or links to screenshots, or links in general to other vector apps on the appropriate page (or make another one). I would like to help out with the help as soon as I can. I'm about done adding all these bugs to the bug tracker from sodi, and then after that, I would like to look into being the major player in helping with the help menu. I'm still green on OSS development, but helping in this way seems most plausible to get my feet wet. thx, Jon -- Jonathan Phillips <jon@...15...>

Feature freeze soon?

How would everyone feel about a feature freeze on Friday, with a release as soon as we feel it is stable enough and all the critical bugs are fixed (hopefully within a week or so)? Also, how do we stand on the following bugs? Are some fixed or do they still need attention? * Fix bug: on quit, still says I have unsaved changes, even though I saved [swingincelt] * Fix bug: can't open compressed svg unless it has .svgz extension. [swingincelt] * Fix bug: autodetect fails if no extension is added to filename (.svg) [swingincelt] * Fix bug: save as/save should use "SVG with xmlns:sodipodi namespace" as default * Fix bug: files are sometimes erroneously saved without the extension namespaces (typically the first time) [tgould, mental] Thanks, Bryce

adobe illustrator 10 screenshots

I've started to put screenshots of illustrator 10 on my own personal website. http://protofunk.org/projects/group/inkscape/reference/adobeillustrator/10/ Send me your requests. The shots might look slightly weird because I'm running illustrator 10 with crossover office 2.1.0, and the fonts look off or something. I'll post more screenshots later. I put one shot up of all the dialogs in illustrator which should be very useful. I'm having a problem getting screenshots of the menu items extended, but I'll figure out away to get shots of those as well. Thoughts? Here's a problem I noticed while editing nodes with the XML editor. Don't have time right now to submit a SF bug right now. Here's what I did: Draw a path Edited some points manually using XML dialog Moved different points using GUI The points I edited using XML dialog reverted back to their original values. Minor bug

Hi, all. I know that I should be using SF's bug machine, but it appears to be heavily overloaded at the moment. I just checked out the CVS trunk, and built it. It is -really- looking good. The current key bindings for selecting a drawing tool are wonderful. However, neglecting to release a key before its corresponding tool is used causes side effects. For example: Hold down the 'p', and start drawing using the freehand tool. You will get an error and a crash: ** ERROR **: file draw-context.c: line 1142 (spdc_add_freehand_point): assertion failed: (dc->npoints > 0) aborting... A suggested fix for this particular problem would be ultra simple. Repeated keystrokes are hitting this function, but any invocations after the first are being processed without giving them a new point. (Which seems proper). Instead of failing hard, fail soft: At draw-context.c line 1142, replace: g_assert (dc->npoints > 0); with if (dc->npoints < 1) return; This 'soft fail' seems to be indempotent, and I don't see any side effects. g_assert() is a bit harsh, anyway, IMHO. HOWEVER, this just fixes a particular symptom. The general case of repeating keys during a draw operation needs attention. Keep up the good work! Bob Jamison Titan Corp.

I made the tool selection buttons along the side larger than the buttons for various commands up top. While I'd experimented with this a while back and abandoned it, it's since been suggested a number of times (most recently by Jon), and Xara appears to do so as well, I decided to try it again. See what y'all think... -mental

Fonts problem with win32 build

Hello, Concerning the fonts problem in the win32 build (fonts are rendered in italic), I think this is because of the function nr_type_calculate_position in nr-type-directory.c which uses the name of the font and string comparisons to test if it contains "italic" "bold", etc .. But for example on my french win32 fonts are named with "italique" instead of "italic" and "gras" instead of "bold" and so on, so this function gives wrong results. Sodipodi_0_33_1_Setup_Win2000_XP.exe seems to have the same problem excepted that it finds normal as default style instead of italic (so it's less visible :), when I try to set the style of the font to "gras" or "italique" it always goes back to "normal".
