Status of inkboard feature
by Denis Leroy
What is the status of the inkboard feature ? Is it considered stable ?
More importantly, is it considered safe (from a security standpoint) ?
We had requests in Fedora to have the feature enabled and so am doing
some testing on my side. It was originally turned off because it was
pretty unstable and would often crash in the loudmouth library, but that
was a while ago...
thx!

NEW: more stuff in Help menu
by bulia byak
Since none of our standard libs could offer a cross-platform, easily
available way to launch an URL in the user's default browser, I looked
around and found exactly what we need in Python (which we carry
anyway) - the standard "webbrowser" module. So I created some Python
extensions to launch various URLs using webbrowser.open calls, and put
them into Help menu:
- Inkscape Manual links to
http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/index.php, do you think
we should host a redirect at inkscape.org instead?
- Command line options: http://inkscape.org/doc/inkscape-man.html
- FAQ on wiki
- Release notes for the current version
- "Report a bug" page
- SVG 1.1 specification at w3.org
I tested this and it seems to work well in Linux and Windows. Let me
know if you have any problems. Also feel free to suggest other "launch
an URL" commands for Inkscape (openclipart? wiki? inkscape.org?
Aaron's extension page?)
The only change I made in the core of Inkscape was to allow an inx
file to specify <effects-menu hidden="yes"/> so that these new
extensions don't automatically show up in the Effects menu.

gradient mesh plan
by bulia byak
Long ago, Ted Gould made a proposal on how to do gradient meshes using
elliptic gradients. Sadly this was not workable because gradients are
simply not flexible enough. But now we have blur - and while
approximating a gradient mesh with blurring is still not trivial, it
is possible. See an attached SVG for an example. Of course it's a
nightmare to do all this manually, but as soon as we have code for
bezier intersections, it becomes possible to do an automatic gradient
mesh object using this approach.

wiki not accepting svg?
by bulia byak
I tried to upload an SVG to Inkscape wiki but the format is not
accepted (only png/jpg). I think it's a shame :) Can someone
knowledgeable please fix this?

Contest Planning
by Jon Phillips
Hello all,
I put a wiki page up to plan for the two upcoming contests on the Open
Clip Art Library wiki. Please look at them, add your two-cents, and lets
get this show on the road :)
http://openclipart.org/wiki/Contests
Oh, the first contest will be:
1.) Inkscape 0.45 About Screen
2.) Open Font Library logo contest
After we review, then the Open Clip Art Library folk will set it up and
develop press/announcements which can be sent out in a big burst. Thus,
please hold off on blogging/posting too much about this yet so we can
maximize our impact on launching these contests. Cool?
Jon

I think it's already in the bug tracker but you can check. Hopefully
Niko or I will address it one day.

That's a side effect that can be prevented by adding outside margins
to the edge segments that would be clipped off.
And of course, the number of flat segments per mesh cell should be
variable. The finer is the segmentation, the more precise is the mesh
and the less blurring is needed to smoothen it. With sufficiently
small segments, you may not even need blurring at all.
