Problems with EPS export and printing of markers

Hi, I'm seeing some problems with markers in Inkscape 0.40 and current CVS: They simply don't print or get exported in exported EPS files. (They are also all black instead of the line color, but that's known to be an unimplemented feature: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=995815&group_id=93… .) I couldn't find anything about them not getting printed or exported though so I figured that I'd check if it's just my build. Also, when building Inkscape with gnome-print support ('./configure --with-gnome-print') I don't get any print dialog at all, the print job is just dumped immediately on the default printer. Is this supposed to happen or should I actually be getting the regular gnome- print dialog? I noticed that the statically linked RPMs on the SF download site are built without gnome-print support, is that because gnome-print support is actually broken? My platform is Fedora Core 3, with GNOME 2.8 (for libgnomeprint), GTK 2.4 and my compiler is GCC 3.4. If this is specific to my setup I'll be ahppy to try to dig into what's going on; if it's universal maybe I can try to hack a solution, although although C++ might not be my most fuelnt language so I can't make any promises as to how far I'll get... I'm trying to compile the latest CVS version on my Debian box, and am getting the error message shown at the end of this mail. I have previously compiled 0.40 on this machine successfully. Can anyone suggest how to fix this problem? This is on Debian-testing, pretty standard setup except that I had to install automake 1.9 from source, since Debian only has 1.4 in unstable. Article to introduce Inkscape 0.40

I've started sketching out a PR piece about Inkscape 0.40, with the intent of writing up something lengthy that both discusses the new capabilities of the project and encourages people to chip in help at improving things. http://inkscape.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?ArticleIntroducingInkscape0_40 I've identified a few areas that definitely need more fleshing out; help on those areas would be quite valuable. Also, example images are needed to show off the capabilities; I'm sure I could rough something together but am betting that folks who actually have artistic talent could do a much better job than I. :-) So help would be much appreciated there as well. I haven't thought about where to publish it; Footsteps perhaps. This is also a rough "off the cuff" writing, so needs some editing and wordsmithing, as it's probably too wordy at this point. I haven't even spell checked it, so there's probably seplling and that grammer problem too. Bryce

These folks are creating a Windows-only OSS CD: http://theopencd.sunsite.dk/ They've had some discussions about possibly including Inkscape, and I'm worried about some of their impressions. I'm not sure how to address their concerns. "Too much flux" and "Development has slowed" wtf!? Static build portability warning

Good day gentlemen, Statically linking libgc is a good idea, because not many people have this library and it's small enough that doing so isn't a big deal. Unfortunately due to the general brokenness of glibc, this will fail on some systems with the following error: inkscape: relocation error: inkscape: symbol __libc_stack_end, version GLIBC_2.1 not defined in file ld-linux.so.2 with link time reference This is because at some point, __libc_stack_end was changed from being public to private. It seems there's been some to-and-fro on this issue: on a Debian unstable system I have access (glibc 2.3.2) to __libc_stack_end is exported but marked as private, eg you can still build against it and it'll work but may break at any moment. On my inkscape nightly build system (glibc 2.3.4) and on my Fedora Core 3 system it's public (@@GLIBC_2.1). It appears that this symbol was originally public, made private then it was discovered that it was required for some of the non-exec stack work and made public again. The net result is that anything attempting to use this symbol is going to be screwed by the symbol versioning mechanism. Boehm GC attempts to weak link against this symbol, but due to the dubious design of weak linkage on GNU systems it fails because glibc does not export this symbol as weak. I will apply a patch to the autopackage copy of libgc soon to make it always fall back to parsing /proc, ask for an explanation of this mess from the glibc developers (I will probably be ignored) and post the patch to upstream libgc to use dlsym to retrieve this symbol, which should bypass symbol versioning. If anybody sees this message then, now you know what it means (kinda). thanks -mike
