Those without an SVN build of Inkscape are invited to visit the
recently updated gallery of 0.45 screenshots:
http://inkscape.org/screenshots/
The exhibits demonstrate the two photorealistic car renditions, a demo
of the proposed gradient mesh approach, and a mini-tutorial on
creating life-like shading for arbitrary rope-like shapes. All
examples use Gaussian blur, and the source files of all examples are
in share/examples in SVN.
Enjoy!

Autopackage: error while loading shared libraries: libssl.so.0.9.8
by Jochem Liem
Dear developers,
I first tried installing inkscape-0.44.1.x86.WONKY.package, but this
gave libpng and c-library problems. I installed
inkscape200611051452.package, which solves the above problems, but gives
the following error:
[jliem@...1558... Desktop]$ /scratch/LinuxPrograms/bin/inkscape &
[1] 31989
[jliem@...1558... Desktop]$ /scratch/LinuxPrograms/bin/.proxy.inkscape:
error while loading shared libraries: libssl.so.0.9.8: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory
[1]+ Exit 127 /scratch/LinuxPrograms/bin/inkscape
[jliem@...1558... Desktop]$
Is this a bug in the installer, or can I correct this myself (without a
root account)?
Best regards,
Jochem

Adobe PDF and XML, introducing Mars. Nota Bene: it uses SVG!
by Alan Horkan
Adobe have announced a project for representing PDF in XML called Mars.
They have also announced a project to cooperate with Mozilla on a shared
ECMAScipt project codenamed Apollo. (Javascript is formally known as ECMA
Script, Adobe/Macromedia has long had a version called Actionscript but I
still like the original name Livescript best.) Not so relevant to
inkscape at the moment. It also sounds vaguely like they are going to use
Webkit (KHTML) but that has even less relevance to Inkscape.
The interesting part of all this project Mars relevant to Inkscape can be
found buried in the Frequently Asked Questions:
http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Mars:FAQ#What_advantages_does_SVG_br...
"SVG is an abbreviation for Scalable Vector Graphics, an XML-based, W3C
standard language for describing graphics. Many applications and tools can
create or manipulate SVG page contents. SVG page content can also be
converted to PDF graphic operators using Acrobat 8.0 Professional and the
Mars plug-in."
I'd love to give you more details but so far I only know as much as can be
seen in the FAQ.
http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Mars:FAQ
Looks promising. You might even say it was pretty cool.
Sincerely
Alan Horkan

eventually but I welcome the help of anyone who wants to do it first or
even find better information.

Should I accept this patch? It is a stringfix for consistency between

OK, I will add a note.
As for the .rc file, would anyone object if I just delete it? It
doesn't look like it's being used.

JonCruz, will you object to removing units.xml?

What needs to be done is creating a _verb_ that does this. After that,
adding it to menu or assigning a key to it will be trivial. There are
many things that Inkscape can do in principle, but not through a verb,
and these things should be verbified. By the way, verbification is
pretty simple thing to do, so it's a good work for novice coders. Just
review verbs.h and verbs.cpp, they're pretty self-explanatory.
For example just recently, I verbified the select next/select prev
actions, bound to Tab/Shift+Tab, and as a result these keys now work
in all tools and not only Selector/Node as before.

It's not really a "bug". Inkscape just needs to recalculate the anchor
point based on the bounding box of the text, in addition to changing
alignment. More like a missing feature (worth a RFE).

GTK+ Quartz Backend on Mac OS X
by Derek Hinchliffe
Hi all,
Recently I've been playing with compiling Inkscape against the
experimental native quartz (Mac OS X) backend for GTK+ [1] and I've
had some reasonable success so far.
After following the GTK+ build instructions on the Imendio project
page, I then compiled all the pre-reqs for Inkscape into a custom
prefix (/opt/gtk), and then compiled Inkscape using:
CFLAGS="-flat_namespace -undefined suppress" ./configure --prefix=/opt/gtk
The result is a binary that I can run (using inkscape -g) and doesn't
require X11 at all.
A screenshot is available.[2]
It loads fine, and I can open and edit files. The problems so far:
1. Various visual glitches (eg. some icons in GTK dialogs displaying
an ugly yellow, scroll bar glitches, menus not being entirely
responsive),
2. Some random crashes when dealing with complex SVGs,
3. Very slow refresh of canvas, which gets painted in gray first, then
you can visibly see it paint the canvas on from top to bottom. This
happens regularly when interacting or scrolling.
Problem 3 is by far the most noticable, and if it wasn't for that (and
the odd crash) it would be quite usable!
Having no experience with developing Inkscape (and very little with
GTK+), can someone give me a clue as to which package I need to focus
on to troubleshoot #3? Does Inkscape use Cairo to paint the canvas?
Or is it pure GDK? Or cairo via GTK+? You can see I know very little
here ;)
Anyway the progress so far is impressive, and I don't think it will be
too much longer before it would be realistic to start integrating GTK+
further into the OS (eg. using native OSX menu bar, a quartz widget
gtk-theme-engine, etc).
Cheers
Derek

Yes, I apologize for cross-list posting, but this is pretty huge news

Command Line version of Inkscape for Windows
by Hugo Ferreira
Hi,
Could someone provide me with an URL (or just send the executable) of a the
latest version of inkscape for windows compiled for console use (as seen
here:
http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/FAQ#I.27m_on_Windows.2C_and_comma...).
The problem is that I'm invoking inkscape from a PHP script with exec() to
convert an .svg to .jpg on-the-fly, but since inkscape doesn't hold the
console until the conversion is done, most of the times I try to read the
file before it has been created.
Thanks in advance,
Hugo Ferreira
P.S.: If anyone know other way of using Inkscape to render .svg to .jpg
without calling it from the console, then I would very much appreciate the
help!

Feature request: Update imported graphic
by Vladimir Savic
Most of the time I have both Inkscape and GIMP opened. Vector gfx is being
done with Inkscape and then imported into GIMP, and opposite direction.
I use Inkscape to finalize illustrations - typography, frames etc. Even if
everything is set up (almost) perfectly there are unfortunately always a few
pixels to tweak. Then I must switch to GIMP, retouch bitmap, reimport that
illustration and do the resizing again (As noted in previous posts, Inkscape
doesn't know exact printing size of imported graphics.).
Another situation where I needed similar workaround was after reorganization
of files. I run into the problem of having to correct all the links to
graphics and then reloading the whole document to see the changes.
It would be very handy having option to update selected pixmap graphic from
file.
Please don't be resent for throwing my working problems notes directly at this
list. Afterall, these are all real life expiriences. :)
Cheers,
Vlada
