Layers Dialog

I just committed the layers dialog UI based on the Layer Manager that Mental had done. We know there are some compile issues with sigc++ up to 2.0.10 and gcc 4.0.x. We think that by sigc++ 2.0.16 things were corrected in sigc++, as an autopackage build using that worked on a box where the base build failed. For me, I'm using sigc++ 2.0.11 and gcc 3.3 and all is happy-happy. Known issues: * gcc 4.0 compile problems * plain checkboxes instead of little eye and lock icons * layers not listed in proper order The order issue is coming from something in the layer manager itself, and the UI stuff in the layers dialog is properly displaying what it's been told. I figure that's a short debug session on the ordering in the layer manager itself. Thus it's a minor bug.

Bug Organizer person needed

For the 0.44 release, we will be making an attempt to close critical bugs in the bug tracker. However, first those bugs need to be prioritized. We have a system for prioritizing bugs, and it's pretty straightforward to do, even by someone with minimal technical experience. Thus this makes an excellent task for someone who wants to contribute to Inkscape but haven't found other tasks they're comfortable doing. Basically, you go through the bug tracker and review bugs set to priority 5 (the default). If it involves a crash, data loss, or other serious issues, mark it critical (9). Otherwise, mark it 6 if it looks important, or 3 if it looks like a lower priority issue. If you're interested in helping in this area, contact me either on IRC or by email, and I can set up your access and help you get started! Thanks, Bryce

composite-related crash

Hi, I'm using xorg 7.0 with the composite extension and inkscape is very easy to crash. I do the following: 1) start inkscape 2) use e.g. the rectangle tool to draw a shape 3) open the fill&stroke dielog 4) change the width of the stroke for the rectangle 5) click outside the rectangle to de-select it. Inkscape crashes immediately every time, after giving the following error: ------------------------------- (inkscape:22744): Gdk-WARNING **: Attempt to draw a drawable with depth 32 to a drawable with depth 24 (inkscape:22744): Gdk-WARNING **: gdkpixbuf-drawable.c:1257: Depth of the source drawable is 32 where as the visual depth of the colormap passed is 24 (inkscape:22744): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_copy: assertion `pixbuf != NULL' failed (inkscape:22744): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_saturate_and_pixelate: assertion `GDK_IS_PIXBUF (src)' failed Emergency save activated! -------------------------------- Actually, the first two messages I think are appearing right before, when I change the width of the stroke. If I disable the composite extension, the identical procedure gives no crash. Is xorg still buggy, or is his a "proper" inkscape bug? I'll do a gdb trace if it's interesting. Cheers, /Johan

Proposal for Feature Freeze today?

Hi all, How do you feel about our readiness to go into Feature Freeze mode today? There's still some development work not finished, but with the recent progress on the layer manager and other features that people have been working on, it feels like things are getting suitably wrapped up. Is there any remaining development work that you think we should wait for? Or do you think we are ready to enter the next phase of the release? During the Feature Freeze, we will discourage any further feature work in the main development branch, instead encouraging everyone to turn attention to the high priority items in the bug tracker. The more bugs we can fix during this next period, the better. Also, if you haven't already, please make sure to add a description of your feature work to the ReleaseNotes in wiki. Our translators will wish to get these notes translated, so the closer they are to done, the more likely they'll be able to complete their work on time. Bryce

Layers Dialog

The long wait is over. A workable Layers dialog was committed last night by Jon Cruz. Hurray! Just press Ctrl+Shift+L and enjoy. Jon, so far I found two bugs: - if the actual order of layers (from bottom) is 1, 2, 3, 4 then in the dialog they go like this: 3, 2, 1, 4. - when you toggle visibility/lock in the dialog, the drop-down selector in the statusbar is updated, but the toggle buttons next to it are not. -- bulia byak Inkscape. Hello Olivier, I am developing a new svgtopdf tool/plugin and I was just looking at that feature today, pdf has the ability to import the ttf or ps font directly and I think this is what I will do. Somehow I will have to link to Linux/Mac/Windows installed Fonts, this might take a bit of work to figure out but the main inkscape guys might know some things. Hopefully this will solve your problem in time, but my work is far from compleat and I need time to address many many bugs. Font embedding and subsetting

I was a bit surprised to read that if you don't use text-to-path you will need the font to be resident on the machine. Using text-to-path is very undesirable because it leads to gigantic PDF files yet if you don't neither GhostScript nor Acrobat (after conversion of the PS to PDF) can find it. This is true of both TTF or Type 1 fonts and even though the fonts are installed. What does one have to do??? Anyway, are there any plans to implement font embedding in PS output (and in PDF later), both for Type 1 and TTF fonts? IMO this is not a minor issue and I was surprised that Inkscape does not already support font embedding. Font subsetting would be great, too: otherwise you'll be limited to free fonts.
