By the way, with the new sliders, you can no longer use directional keys to modify size in the Calligraphy tool. It's a pity, because they could be used for more precise value adjustments (it's hard to get a change of exactly 1 with the sliders). Also, I was hoping for keyboard shortcuts to be available to the pencil tool as well, so... Refer to my proposal for the pencil interface: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Vector-brushes I don't have problems with the integer being replaced by a slider, but I'd still like to be able to control it somewhat with keyboard shortcuts. Though I suppose the issue Could be easily side-stepped by entering a value 5 to 10 times smaller in the second field of my proposal, so that you drag the slider more freely...

I've tried the new smoothing values! It's much better than before, so thank you very much! But I think the maximum value could be even smoother. In KOffice's Karbon14, if you choose "Curve" and "Exactness 20" for example, you get an absolutely crazing level of smoothing, i.e. you get only 2 nodes: Inkscape with 100 smooth: http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/4382/inkscapepk6.png Karbon14 with Curve exactness 20: http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/355/karbon14hw2.png Is it possible to make the slider logarithmic? This way you get your raw values, but at maximum, most curves produce only 2 nodes. A center-ish value is normal smoothing.

A problem compiling CVS

I haven't had problems compiling CVS before. This time though, 3 files seem to be giving me problems: /usr/include/poppler/Object.h extension/internal/pdfinput/svg-builder.cpp extension/internal/pdfinput/pdf-parser.cpp Nearly all of it involves the following message: warning: deprecated conversion from string constant to ‘char*’ There are too many of them, so I can't copy/paste them all, but when looking at the files they involve lines such as: error(-1, "Weird page contents"); Any idea where the error may come from? The error function perhaps?

Nodepath testing

Hello all, I just converted a bit of the nodetool to 2geom. Generating the knots and handles of a path is now done using 2geom path data. As it is late now, I am not 100% sure that it works 100%. Please help test to see if I broke anything. (so draw a strange path, enter nodetool and see whether everything was generated as it used to be) Thanks, Johan

Hi, While documenting Inkscape we (well, Joshua) discovered that Shift + mouse drag for handles of Star tool applies different changes depending on particular handle. This is not documented neither in hotkeys cheat sheet, nor in tutorials, not in Tav's book. The middle handle gives larger values, and the periferal handles gives smaller values. This kind of switch is usually achieved by using Alt key in other tools. So, is it an easter egg? :) Alexandre

Some controls (such as the Width in Calligraphic/Tweak/Eraser tools, Tremor, Wiggle, and Mass in Calligraphic, Threshold in Paintbucket, Tolerance in Pencil) are converted from numeric editable fields into draggable sliders. Break path at selected nodes

I'd like to bring bug #168589 "'Break path at selected nodes' only breaks a few nodes" to your attention, as no developers are cc'd on it. I attached a patch which I believe fixes the problem. Rendering(/verb) tests - comparing output files to reference files

To elaborate on what I'm working on, I currently have a tool which can execute Inkscape with some arbitrary command-line and (given what the output file is) compare the output to a set of reference files. If it finds a match it assigns the test the result belonging to that reference file, it can't find a match the test is marked "New". (It can also deal with crashes and so fort. And it can use a tool like perceptualdiff to compare the files.) Currently there are two short-comings: 1. Obviously it needs a bit more automation (you don't want to enter it all manually). Locally I'm doing this using a batch file. Since this isn't portable I'm thinking of either modifying buildtool to be able to do this, or more or less porting my batch file to Python. 2. Comparing the generated files completely automatically to the W3C reference files is practically impossible, because of font differences. This also goes for sharing reference files between different computers. I would definitely welcome some ideas for solving 2. Currently I'm thinking of a combined strategy. First of all the problem can be mitigated somewhat by using --export-id=test-body-content --export-id-only (this makes sure the revision string and the border aren't exported). This doesn't make it easier to compare the output to existing reference files, but does make it easier to share reference files between computers. Going a bit further it would be possible to eliminate all the unnecessary labels from test files. Secondly, there will always be files with text. To prevent those from being a problem I could do roughly two things: - Make sure it is relatively easy to judge the files on your own PC (using some GUI tool that lets you judge the files by clicking on a button for example). - Make some on-line tool that runs the tests and publishes the results. Both have their (dis)advantages. What would people prefer? And what are the possibilities for option 2? (That is, would it be possible to do this on the Inkscape site somewhere? Does SF have facilities for running periodic tests that I could use?)

Rendering(/verb) tests - where to put them?

I'm working on implementing rendering(/verb) tests (getting Inkscape to render SVG files and comparing them to known-good/bad reference files) and was wondering how I could best make my work available. Just putting it in some directory under the trunk does not seem like a good idea (especially at the moment). And if I were to create a separate top-level directory, should it include data files (a selection of the W3C SVG test suite a the moment)?

Icon loading now fixed

I've finished up the second round if icon loading cleanup. First was to get things going with stock images http://library.gnome.org/devel/gtk/stable/gtk-Themeable-Stock- Images.html This second pass was to get the newer icon theme (added with GTK 2.6) http://library.gnome.org/devel/gtk/stable/GtkIconTheme.html That second part allows for the newer theme sets of icons to be loaded. These include the Tango icons. Probably the most important part is this now allows Inkscape to follow a standard look with other apps by using shared icons. In order to do this well we need to use standard names and standard concepts as much as possible. With my recent checkin I switched three icons over to standard, but there are still two main things to do First is to see if we can use any existing standard icons. The base spec with proposed standard icon names is at http://standards.freedesktop.org/icon-naming-spec/icon-naming-spec- latest.html The standard icons out in existing themes, though, don't use all of those. Such themes are usually under /usr/share/icons/* or the equivalent. A few I have here are "highcolor" (the fallback default), "Human" and "Tangerine". The main second thing is to get graphic-app specific icons that are not listed in the default set figured out and assigned names. The Tango project had started this under their Art Libre set. http://tango.freedesktop.org/ArtLibreSet If anyone can take a look through there, that would be a great help. And more importantly if anyone who uses other apps such as GIMP, Krita, Blender, etc. could take a peek at what could be unified that would be a huge help.
