rendering quality for filter etc.
by the Adib
There is this issue 322116 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/322116 "PDF
export does not use the highest quality for rasterized filters"
The reason for this issue is that each nr_arena_item checks the
preferences for the filter quality even for off screen rendering.
This is wrong behaviour.
During png export there is a sequence like this save, set ...
rendering ... restore. This changes for a short moment the
preferences.
This is also not good style. (remember a background task renderin to
png - in future)
I developed a patch that is attached to the issue in launchpad.
Attached patch puts render quality properties to nr_arena. You can do
now "nr_arena_set_renderoffscreen(arena)" for an offscreen arena in
order to get highest accuracy.
please review!
Adib.

Re: [Inkscape-devel] geometry constructions tool/lpe (plus three questions)
by Maximilian Albert
Hi all,
> Do we have a decision whether we ship 0.47 with GC tools enabled?
I'd vote for leaving them out. Although it may look like the geometriy
tool is just a step from being finished and perhaps it's already of
use for some people, some important things still need to be added
before it is truly usable. These involve coding on a fundamental level
as well as some careful design decisions, and it is likely that this
will entail (considerable?) changes in some of the GC LPEs, too. IMHO
it would be advisable to not make these in a rush while releasing
0.47.
In this context, I'd once again like to sincerely apologize that my
work is still unfinished. Unfortunately, due to sad personal
circumstances related to my family it is likely that I won't be able
to participate in Inkscape development anytime soon (I can't predict
yet how long that may be, I'm afraid), and this post is just a rare
occasion since by coincidence I caught a glimpse of Alexandre's
question. I will join you again as soon as I can manage, promise!
Perhaps I'll be able to do an occasional bug fix during the release
process (although frankly speaking I doubt it).
While I'm at it, here is one question and two random comments that
occurred to me recently:
1) I seem to recall that there is an online tutorial on scientific
poster creation with Inkscape. Does someone happen to have a link at
hand?
2) The default value of the "Smoothing factor" in the pencil tool is
4, but this often produces paths with a huge number of nodes. Wouldn't
something like 25 or 30 make more sense? BTW, does the number of nodes
depend on how quickly the line is drawn?
3) After a fresh installation all lines drawn with the pen/pencil
tools have no stroke but are filled, which is very unnatural for
freehand lines. On the other hand, the defaults in
preferences-skeleton.h are set the other way round. Are these settings
discarded, and why?
Best regards and good luck for the release of an awesome 0.47!

Spray tool almost complete
by Pierre-Antoine MARC
Hi there,
Spray tool is almost complete and you can download it on
svn.eclair.ec-lyon.fr/svn/pi2010_inkscape. We had some difficulties to
merge it with the official trunk recently, so it is not up to date (it's
a version from 2 weeks ago). If someone knows how to fix this...
The single path mode may only work if you convert the object to a
path... Otherwise, everything works fine.
Give it a try and tell us what you think!

geometry constructions tool/lpe
by Alexandre Prokoudine
Hi,
Do we have a decision whether we ship 0.47 with GC tools enabled?
On related matter, do we know which LPEs will be shipped in 0.47?

Tablet stopped work in Dev builds
by microUgly
I just downloaded the Oct 24 Windows build and found that my tablet isn't
working properly with it.
I can move the cursor with tablet pen, but when I press on the tablet
nothing draws. I tried toggling the "Use pressure" button.
My tablet still works fine in 0.46 and was working in an earlier build I was
using last night (I don't think it was more than a week or two old). Let me
know if you require a bug logged for this.

Ok, I will prepare a testcase and attach it to a bugreport. It's true that the machines I am using are not very fast (for portability and environmental reasons :) ). The machine I used while this issue hit me last was an Intel Pentium M processor, 1.70GHz with 1 GB of ram (so, only one core).
I also noticed Inkscape becomes slow when using some type 1 fonts, but that's another issue for which I'll prepare a testcase, too.

Fwd: [CREATE] LGM 2009 — Budget and Accommodation — URGENT REQUEST
by Jon Phillips
Sorry for forward. I need updated numbers from all three projects, namely:
1.) NAME OF PERSON ATTENDING
2.) ESTIMATED COST FOR TRAVEL
Then, at the event we will sort out more details about reimbursement.
If you want reimbursement, please get me this in the next 24 hours.
Inkscapers, is there someone handling this? Dave/OFLB, you put this
together before right?
Jon

Subject: [CREATE] LGM 2009 — Budget and Accommodation — URGENT REQUEST
To: Create ML <create@...626...>
To all LGM teams, including LGM people who maybe not member of a team
"officially" but who do contribute to LGM's projects, putting oil in
the bearings and who qualify for a reimbursement of their travel
expanses by the LGM org.
Action 1) Please forward asap (now) the estimated cost for travelling
to Montreal for each member of your team who is going to attend. This
can be done through a google.doc one contact person from each team can
then share with me. Hurry up, please. :-)
Action 2) Please try to evaluate with a reasonable degree of accuracy
how many rooms you're going to need at the student residence. This is
also urgent.
Reasons for asking:
1) We need to establish the budget with more accuracy than a wild
guess. The efforts of quite a few people will then be needed to pump
the money in... So we better know the real needs quick.
2) This year, the authorities at the uni residence are ready to give
us the same price as 2 years ago, for the same services, which is
great, I think. But they ask for a security deposit based on the
number of rooms we're going to actually take. I can cope with the
deposit but I cannot cope with a loss. So, the closer we are to the
reality, the better. For the record, in 2007 I reserved 50 rooms and
we ended up renting 47, which was great. If we can be as close to the
estimates this year as we were in 2007, we won't lose the deposit. But
if we reserve 50 and we rent 30 rooms in the end, we're in for a few
hundred bucks of loss which I don't want to spend so stupidly. They
are not asking for the moon but their rules have been tightened and
it's a reality we have to accept.
So please, act now!
Cheers!
Louis
