Feature Freeze!!!
by Joshua A. Andler
Hey all,
We're in the final stretch! Given that I am the only Release Warden, I
will have to modify a release rule if no one objects... this is the
Release Wardens only can commit rule. I would like to extend the ability
to commit to buliabyak and JonCruz during this period to ensure that I
won't slow things down too much.
Translators, please work toward finalizing your translations for this
release.
Packagers, we should hopefully have a pre2 tarball soon (yes, that means
you're getting an email Ted)... when we do, please package things at
your first opportunity so we can ensure that any potential packaging
issues are ironed out.
Would anyone like to volunteer for fixing make distcheck? Last I was
aware of, it was failing.
I'd like to see us branch on Sept 1, and hopefully release about 2 weeks
after that.
For now, on with the freeze! The list below was taken from the
pre-freeze discussion. Thanks to everyone for all your work getting us
this far, just a little bit further to the finish line!
===Crashers===
307195 “crash with two inkscape instances when changing layer”
346721 “Segfault after opening scripts dialog”
406470 “Crash when trying to save as PDF”
399604 “'malloc: *** error' after changing numeric precision to 1 or 2”
397075 “Inkscape crashes adding image effect in filter editor.”
===Other===
382313 “Image Filter broken for external images.”
* Given all of the filter magic this release, seems important.
389130 “Inkscape PNG transparency display appearance does not match
export and other standard applications”
* This seems like a blocker when our one bitmap export has issues.
388257 “Inkscape 0.47Pre: PDF/PS Export 'Text to Paths' gives
inconsistent results”
190557 “resize of object or group by entering a numeric size results in
a different size.”
* We have many precision issues that have persisted for a long time,
I don't know that this is the time to fix this. Perhaps a goal for
an upcoming release would be to make our precision... precise. :) I
nominate to drop as a blocker.
===Platform Specific===
OS X:
390024 “raster image extensions fail on osx: missing ImageMagick config
files/resources”
373514 “No Script Console on Mac OS X”
* Maybe just a release note rather than make a blocker.
===Nominated for removal for release===
179452 “export to openclipart.org in dev version”
* Unless someone can step up, it's probably best to disable for 0.47.
319107 “Jabber whiteboard doesn't work”
* Remove configure flag until someone actively works on again.
397872 “Auto-palette doesn't refresh until another color is added”
* This is nominated to be ifdef'd out for the release if JonCruz does
not have time to fix.

Cheers,
Josh

Fedora 11 and text dialog
by MilesTogoe
Fedora 11 now has .47pre(0) in the regular repository so everyone
running it has received it in upgrades (why such an early beta in the
main repository I don't understand but that's a Fedora issue...) -
however, the text editing dialog is really broken in this version which
gives Inkscape users on F11 a bad experience and impression. So it
would be helpful for Fedora packager to update the repositories to the
pre1 version. Of course, text editing is still not right in pre1 but at
least doable. Better yet, is a pre2 being prepared ?
Meanwhile, when going to the .47 download page - only the windows
versions are visible up top - but exploring further the mac and linux
versions are all the way at the bottom of a long page. Shouldn't they
all be in the same place ? (maybe Windows users just don't know how to
scroll down :) Anyway both website and sourceforge page could use some
clarification. If not being worked on, I'll try to hack on this.

Re: [Inkscape-devel] Updating GTK+ on Win32
by Josh Andler
Doh! I won't have time to talk for close to 24hrs... if no one chimes in I
will see what we can do. Otherwise... Bob or another win32 lib maven will be
required to give us guidance.

Obviously this isn't good. What should I do next? I figure that I need to
update poppler (it's way out of date too) to match with the new version of

instructions for it. I'll see if I can work it out (using the cmake gui I'm
up to it needing FreeType), but anyway, I just thought I'd tell you :-)

File Export Tests Update
by Tavmjong Bah
Hi,
Here is an update of my File Export tests.
The SVG files I used for the tests can be found at:
http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL_v15Draft/images/FILES/FileExportT...
http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL_v15Draft/images/FILES/FileExportT...
http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL_v15Draft/images/FILES/FileExportT...
A draft of my File Export section of my book can be found at:
http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL_v15Draft/html/File-Export.html
You can see the results of exporting for most formats.
I assigned a letter grade (A best, F fail) to each export based on what
could be expected in a perfect export, taking into account the
limitations of the export file format.
File Format:
.ai: Removed (poorly supported old AI format, AI since 2001 can directly
import SVG).
.dfx: Two routines:
(B) AutoCAD DFX: Missing star shape (perhaps as it is partly off page).
(C) Desktop Cutting Plotter: Missing rectangle, Star in wrong place.
Same errors as in HPGL export. FX export gets in right.
.emf: (?) Not tested. Windows only.
.eps: (A) Cairo imposes restriction that bounding box must be smallest
rectangle around objects in exported drawing.
.fx: (B) Gradients defined but not placed correctly. Patterns are
referenced but not defined.
.gpl: (A)
.hpgl (C) See .dfx.
.odg (C) One small translation error. Text and paths may be invisible.
.pdf (A)
.plt (C) Circle missing. Cannot have references to fonts in SVG file.
(Uniconvertor)
.png via Cairo (B) Missing rasterizing filter support but does a better
job at patterns.
.pov (F) Broken, extra output lines.
.ps (A)
.sk1 (F) Fails with error message.
.svgz (A/F) Double entries. Second one fails. Any problem with deleting
external export option?
.svg with Scour (A, after bug with ellipses fixed)
.tex Two options:
PSTricks (A) Patterns, gradients, etc. not supported but not expected
to be.
PSFrag (B) Cairo font subsetting requires hand editing strings.
.wmf (C) Circle missing. Cannot have references to fonts in SVG file
(Uniconvertor)
.xaml (C) Circle/star/text translations wrong. No patterns. (Tested by
reimporting into Inkscape.)
.xcf (A)
.zip (A)

Re: [Inkscape-devel] Convolve Matrix Divisor slider range
by Felipe Sanches
ok. You convinced me. Lets see if we can get it into 0.47... Maybe it
is too late. I hope not.
ScislaC,
can we commit this change to trunk?

inkscape nsi
by the Adib
Hi Chris,
I saw your svn commit 22142 where you changed the inkscape.nsi.
But you (however) changed in inkscape/inkscape.nsi and not in
inkscape/packaging/win32/inkscape.nsi
inkscape.nsi is just a placejolder an can be removed in my opinion.
please check.

[SPAM] Libre Graphics Meeting 2010 in Brussels Announced
by Jon Phillips
GLOBAL - August 22, 2009 - Cutting edge graphics software meets
free culture at Libre Graphics Meeting 2010 in Brussels
Users and developers of Free, Libre and Open Source graphics software
will meet in Brussels, Belgium on May 26-29, 2010 at the fifth annual
Libre Graphics Meeting (LGM). Held in a historical piano factory,
newly renovated into a lively exhibition and work space near Brussels'
city center, LGM 2010 offers software developers, artists, designers and
other graphics professionals the chance to collaborate and learn from each
other. LGM emphasizes the sharing of collective creativity, innovation
and ideas and is free for everyone to attend. The LGM community is
excited for the opportunity to bring this event to the European capital.
About the Libre Graphics Meeting
The Libre Graphics Meeting exists to unite and accelerate the efforts
behind Free, Libre and Open Source creative software. Since 2006, this
annual meeting is the premiere conference for developers, users and
supporters of projects such as GIMP, Inkscape, Blender, Krita, Scribus,
Hugin, the Open Clipart Library, and the Open Font Library gather to
work on interoperability, shared standards, and new ideas. Work at prior
LGMs has pushed the state of the art in important areas such as color
management, cross-application sharing of assets, and common formats.
Face-to-face meetings and opportunities for collaboration are important to
users and developers alike; in the form of tutorials, talks, workshops,
and birds-of-a-feather (BOF) the event offers many formal and informal
opportunities to interact.
Highlights from LGM 2009
The last Libre Graphics Meeting took place in Montreal, Canada. It
involved 150+ participants from around the world working together for
four days to give presentations, demos, and meet informally. Through
support from the Ãcole Polytechnique Montréal, the LGM user community
(raising money on pledgie.com), Sourceforge, River Valley Technologies,
Intel Communities, Open Candy, QT, sK1, GIMP, Python Software Foundation,
Gnome foundation and Group Eyrolles, the conference funded travel
for many international developers whom otherwise would not be able
to work face to face. Highlights included contributions by companies
building on Open Source such as AscenderCorp and Open Source Publishing,
and presentations of Jeff Fortinâs PiTiVi Video Editor, FontMatrix,
Phatch and Michael Terryâs work on In-Gimp user-experience analysis
and kinetic templates. All major projects in attendance, Scribus, Gimp,
Inkscape, and Open Font Library, spent time planning activities for the
next year. New projects like the panorama stitcher NONA, Lighttwist, a
system for running multi-projector immersive video displays, and Markus
Weiland's FacetZoom widget, set the stage for new exciting software
developments leading into LGM 2010 in Brussels.
A Preview of LGM 2010
For Libre Graphics Meeting 2010, the conference promoters challenge
all participating projects and people to set goals and plan creative
projects. First, each major project is requested to have set three solid
priorities before the conference to work towards. Second, one or more
collaborative projects is to be developed, beyond just the tools used,
such as a book or animation. And third, the conference hopes to involve
an increasing number of artists and academics to show novel uses libre
graphics software, and to discuss, analyse and provide inspiration.
In the coming months, Libre Graphics Meeting 2010 organizers will
release more information about the upcoming conference, raising funds to
enable the event, and release the official call for participation for
2010. Immediately, the conference organizers invite all interested in
participating to watch the http://libregraphicsmeeting.org website and
join the Create Project (http://create.freedesktop.org) mailing list
and get involved.
LGM 2010 is hosted by the Libre Graphics Community and Constant in
collaboration with De Pianofabriek, Master Networked Media and Research
programme Communication in a Digital Age (Piet Zwart Institute, Willem
de Kooning Academy, Rotterdam) and the Bruxelles Linux User Group (BXLUG).
