Hi, I am a college student who is looking to contribute to the inkscape project as I am trying to participate in "google summer of code 2017" . I have some initial trouble compiling the source code when I ran cmake .. . Hi I am Rohit. *As I mentioned in my last email, I would like to contribute to Inkscape by working on the Development Project Management System during the summer.* I have already submitted some patches to inkscape-web repository. I would like you to help me write my project proposal by suggesting more features that can be implemented in the system. After going through the blueprints, funded development project and Janitorial task, I suggest we build a Web portal with the following features : - People can submit,edit and view ideas for development project.( With login capabilities or without it) - The admin and the user(who uploaded the idea) will have the authority to change the status of the project ( Like assigning it to somebody, changing the design,priority,delivery,tags of the project among other things) - Contributors can view the ideas based on different filters( priority, tags, design, janitorial, languages) and can select those project by letting the admin/user know. - A feature will be added where contributors can comment and clarify their doubts about the project. - All the launchpad blueprints can be transferred to the portal with a well written python script. This is just a basic blueprint of the system. Dear Developers, Thanks to the work by Rohit Lodha, we now have javascript validating the resource upload form. What this means is that if you don't have enough quota, or there's some other issue with your upload like it's the wrong file type for that category. Then you should get a javascript message before the form is submitted and you shouldn't have to wait a long time for the form to fail. It'll need more testing of course and you can get to it here: https://inkscape.org/en/gallery/upload/ (don't forget to force refresh to clear your cache, new js and css) Best Regards, Martin Owens

I have given permissions. I’m quite familiar with how to get programs to start when it comes from the internet. Issues Loading Inkscape on macOS Sierra (Version 10.12)

I have version 0.91 of Inkscape (installed 64bit version) and xQuartz version 2.7.11. I have used Inkscape on this computer before without problems but now it won’t load (program goes to not responding). I start xQuartz first because I read something that said I should, but that didn’t help. I’m assuming this has to do with the OS since nothing else had changed (I don’t remember when I updated to macOS Sierra, so I’m making a wild assumption here). To be safe, I did remove and reinstall xQuartz and Inkscape (in case something had become corrupted) but that didn’t fix the problem.

Changes to several extensions for Python 3 compatibility

I have made minor modifications to several of the supported python extension files for compatibility with Python 3. These modifications allow them to continue working in python 2.x, and do not add dependencies. I am not sure if this is duplicating existing work, but I thought it might be best to discuss it here just in case. The changed files are: inkex.py bezmisc.py cspsubdiv.py simplepath.py simplestyle.py simpletransform.py These patches are based on files from 0.92, and which are unchanged in current bzr. I have posted the files here, since I am not an approved Inkscape developer: http://evilmadscientist.com/source/extensionfiles-py2-3.zip (18 kB) (In addition to these, I would note that ffgeom.py and cubicsuperpath.py work in both Python 2 and 3 without changes. I have not tested other extension files for compatibility.) These changes appear to be non-breaking within Inkscape, as tested via invoking extensions that depend upon these, including flatten, Voronoi pattern (generate from path), and alphabetsoup. I have tested back to Python 2.6 under Inkscape 0.91, and up to Python 3.6 on the command line. While this is neither a formal test procedure nor exhaustive, I have not observed issues or errors due to these changes. If there are formal tests that could identify other issues, I would certainly welcome learning about them. One coding note that I have is that the function definitions in bezmisc.py required "manually" unpacking the named tuples on their inputs, which adds one line of code to each function. Someone more expert at python may know of a more elegant approach. I would assert that making the extension environment compatible with Python 3 is a worthwhile goal, even if we are quite some ways away from making Python 3 compatibility a requirement. This particular set of changes potentially allows certain Inkscape extensions to be run from the command line without opening the Inkscape GUI (not otherwise possible for verbs) on systems running either Python 2 or 3 as default. Impact of going GTK3 only for extensions (especially on Windows)

Hi, I just read about the upcoming removal of GTK+ 2.x from Inkscape. What does that mean for extensions? At the moment my extension makes use of PyGTK. That means, it uses GTK+ 2.x. Will the extension still be usable in the future? As far as I understand, it shouldn’t be a problem on Linux, where the installation of Python and GTK etc. are separate from Inkscape, but on Windows its included by Inkscape and probably stop working once GTK+ 2.x is removed. question - text width and height

Hi, I am working on an extension for markdown -> svg text transform and currently facing a problem with getting text dimensions. I would like to position and scale my result (Group containing several text elements) into required values but I don’t know how can I get width and height of that group. Is there a way to get these values? I’ve read about using BBox. Is there a functionality maybe in inkex package to get BBox of an element ? I’ll be glad for any advice. Thank you, Lukas Haberzettl

I have noticed that Inkscape loads "invisibly" when I'm running both my laptop screen and and external monitor. If I disconnect the external monitor, the Inkscape window appears. Roadmap for Inkscape 0.93 on Windows - GTK3, devlibs, MSYS2 and support for Windows XP

Hi all, one of the biggest changes in current trunk is the switch to gtk3. As some of you already know this step will be a hard one on Windows as we have to rely on pre-built development libraries to be able to compile Inkscape: * devlibs currently has no support for gtk3 at all. (There's an experimental branch on which jazzynico was working, but as far as I know he was never able to complete it due to build issues) * devlibs64 includes gtk3 3.19.6 but IMHO it's pretty broken and would require *a lot* of work to get anywhere near being usable As a result we're currently not able to build Inkscape for 32-bit Windows at all (bug 1609954 [1]) and builds with devlibs64 are nowhere close to be usable. *Therefore I want to propose to switch to MSYS2 for compiling Inkscape trunk on Windows!* MSYS2 is a rewrite of MSYS including all the necessary build tools to compile native applications for Windows using mingw-w64 (see official homepage [2] for details). Furthermore it includes the package manager "pacman" (users of Arch Linux will know it) which allows to conveniently install and upgrade packages. The switch would have a *lot* of advantages: * Easier setup of the build system as gcc and all necessary build tools and libraries are included in MSYS2 (currently we require to download gcc + devlibs + cmake separately and procedure varies widely between 32-bit and 64-bit builds) * A solid set of constantly updated libraries (see [3]). * Packages are usually built with a small set of patches to fix compatibility errors on Windows that would otherwise require hours to figure out when building libraries from scratch. * An active developer community. Questions are answered swiftly, bugs in the provided libraries can usually be figured out jointly. * Creating new packages (if it should ever be required) or recompiling existing packages (i.e. to test a fix) is extremely easy. (I recently added libvisio [4] which was the only dependency of Inkscape not yet provided) * 32-bit and 64-bit builds are equivalent. The exact same library versions are used and MSYS2 includes build environments for both that co-exist by default I'm already successfully building current trunk with MSYS2 without any issues at all (there are no code changes needed, only environment variables have to be adjusted and the CMake install target has to be adjusted to pick up the correct libraries). If you're interested you can find the latest builds at [5] (the most obvious change is the Adwaita theme that is now used by gtk3 by default but doesn't look very native. However that's something we can customize going forward as desired). There's one big downside: My builds currently don't work on Windows XP. However I'm afraid this has nothing to do with MSYS2. Many libraries have started to drop support for Windows XP, most importantly gtk3 does not support it after 3.16 [6]. This means we have two possibilites: * Drop support for Windows XP in Inkscape 0.93 * Try our best to somehow (currently I have no idea how!) continue support for Windows XP. This would most likely require us to keep building, maintaining and distributing our own development libraries (however I guess even here MSYS2 would be a huge help). While achieving this might sound favourable keep in mind that it would require us to limit ourselves to old library versions on purpose with all the inevitable downsides like unfixed bugs and growing number of incompatibilities in newer OSs. I thought about this for some time now and although it was not an easy decision I'd vote for the first option. I know people still use Windows XP in productive environments (I have an old Windows XP server running myself - shame on me) but to be realistic it's time to move on. Support for XP ended a long time ago, it's insecure and there's only very few cases where people are actually bound to XP for other reasons than convenience. Weighing all the pros and cons I'd say the pros clearly prevail! *So: Let me know what you think!* Does a switch to MSYS2 as build system sound reasonable to you? Is Windows XP support something we have to keep even if it means a huge amount of additional effort and requires us to limit ourselves on newer platforms on purpose?
