Dear Dev Team. Big thanks to everyone at this week's dev meeting: Cal: https://inkscape.org/cals/1/ Attendees: Marc, Mikekov, Rene, Tav, KrIr17, Martin, Ishaan, Jonathan Next Meeting: Early meeting, Jan 18th, Saturday Rene: Plans to move the MacOS pipeline stuff to the Infrastructure group; Also has been in touch with MacStadium, and setting up CIs for Gnome projects Garbled font issue ("tofu") has been identified and fixed in pango. We can finally get rid of it with a dependency update. Yay! KrIr17: Worked on fixing shortcuts in floating dialog windows Ishaan: Working on adding tests based on Rafael's proposal Marc hasn't worked on much and has been on holiday but finding it a little difficult to attend the new meeting times. Jonathan; Hackfest dates: - Hotel is booked from Sunday (2.2.)- Thursday (6.2.) morning for all participants that haven't told me otherwise (checkout 9:30 am). For those who have already booked flights, they can stay until Friday morning. - Conference room is reserved Monday (3.2.) - Wednesday (5.2.) evening. Projector available. - Hotel address is Haus der Jugend e.V., Deutschherrnufer 12, 60594 Frankfurt am Main - If you also want to attend FOSDEM, we can take a train to Frankfurt together: I’ll take the train at 16:25 from Brussels to Frankfurt, which arrives at Frankfurt/Main main station (2km from the youth hostel) at 19:31. - I haven't figured out the hotel reimbursement procedure with the SFC yet, working on that. Martin worked on a bunch of fixes, and some tentative features. Asked about doing 1.4.1. Jonathan says he would be in support of running a bugfix contract for 1.4.x if the testing team thinks it's necessary. Elendil reported on where we are on the project and some concerns about forward porting and back porting. Jonathan: Manpreet has been working on the AI import extensions, adding support for shapes and text. It's looking solid. Linearity Curve (ex-Vectornator) has locked out users by making the software paid. Someone has been working on a Curve->Svg importer, and wants to integrate it with Inkscape. Plus there has been a a lot of progress on Affinity importer, which would be nice to have in 1.4.1 Also worked on an extension showcasing automatic packaging and translation of extensions. Mikekov worked on the update modified signals. He tried a bunch of different possible techniques. Ishaan asked about markers and the transform tag on marker tags. Krlr17 asked about text attributes using pre and pre-wrap and older versions of the files. See you all next time!

Developer Meeting: 2nd Jan 2025

Happy New year Inkscape, This is the first Developer meeting of 2025 and we spent almost two hours going through lots of different topics: Event: https://inkscape.org/cals/event/1/ Attending: Martin, Elendil, Ishaan, ScislaC, Vaibhav, Tav Next: Jan 10th 2025, later meeting time. Organise an event in India? There's enough people in that part of the world to have people meet and pay for travel and hosting. There are FOSS events and Ishaan tried to organise an event but asking in Vectors but no one was interested. Martin suggested making community with other Asian contributors directly. India is a big country alone and travel can be longer than expected. Three hour flight to Bangalor from Dehli. Martin advises to get in touch with the plc when plans are known and we'd put together a funding. Elendil shared the contributors map from 2023 from where everyone was as an example for how spread out the contributor community is. Vaibhav and Martin talked about using the caps, scroll lock key. We talked about the comments and how we'd run a user experience study on the ideas and using them as modifiers in the code. ScislaC asked about AppImages and how we can best test and narrow down when an issue first happened. Martin explained his personal process of using release AppImages for older issues and pipeline results for newer ones. Vaibhav asked about releasing AppImages in the GitLab release. Elindil reports that AppImages from three years ago have been deleted, but anything newer are available. Martin knows that space on GitLab can sometimes be a problem and pipeline results are deleted. There are still issues with getting and retaining windows developers. The buld time is very very slow on windows and this is causing problems. We told each other stories of how we were introduced to Free Software, and the change in the community over those years and what technologies brought people into the ecosystem and community. Vaibhav has been working on text on path and it involves a lot of maths which can be quite complicated. We talked about the dificulty of fixing some of the problems in boolops, color and other parts of inkscape that need more of a computer science background. There are a bunch of new nodes which allow the text to path to be controlled better. Vaibhav worked on a few thigns at the same time, worked on pending reviews in GSoC. We're reaching the end for the node editing improvements but the pen editing functionality wil take more time to complete. We looked at the design and some of the ways the MR needs to be improved. Elendil has been working on shortcut handling. There is a GLOBAL vs. LOCAL setting which we have set to GLOBAL despite this not being the default there is no commit message or comments which explain why we have this setup. Ishaan has continued their work on marker transforms. Martin says he can help with the cairo use of the API with marker z-order data. There some other regressions in markers which are separate but could do with being tested. We went through the way to write unit tests. ScislaC brought to our attention an old issue with the modification keys where it used to be possible to change the scale of objects by hovering over one of the resize controls. Hi all, Following are the meeting notes for the Developer Meeting on 25th December 2024: Attending: Ishaan, Jonathan, Mike, Tav, Elendil (Krlr17) Ishaan: Working on Martin's centralised marker transforms refactor, stuck on definition of no stroke. Mike suggested to ping Rafael as he worked recently on markers. Some discussion on harlines. Mike: Comboboxes to dropdown replacement. Working on breaking Object Properties MR into smaller MRs for better reviewability. Also worked on Spin button implementation. Tav: Working on color fonts rendering with different font types with recent cairo and harfbuzz. A brief explanation of color fonts and their different types (very interesting!) Elendil: asked Tav whether the PDF text import fixes need forward-porting (they do). Some discussion on whether a newer pango version is required. Jonathan would like to use Inkscape's Mac that Tav is using during the Summit to check a file that only works on Mac. Jonathan also wanted to check if someone would like to submit a proposal for LGM from Inkscape - Supporting a Proprietary Format, GTK4 migration, CMYK work might be interesting topics. Dev Meeting notes 2020-12-09 Present: Elendil, Ishaan, René, Tav, Mike, Jonathan, Martin Elendil was fixing some bugs on master that interfered with testing. Ishaan has been working on https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/-/merge_requests/6844. Martin also has been working on refactoring markers, so there's some collaboration possibility here. Martin: The CMYK Export supports most features now, except for text. Also some refactoring because markers code was duplicated all over the codebase, and went out of sync over time. Needs to talk to Tav about text. There are many different ways of writing out text. Tav prefers to use a method that is relatively easy to read back in. Tav has been working on fixing a PDF import bug where text was incorrectly positioned. Mike has discovered that the results from our LCH color picker differes from what browsers do when the color doesn't convert properly to sRGB. There is an iterative function defined in the CSS Colors Level 4 spec how to deal with those. Mike is working on integrating this into Inkscape. (https://www.w3.org/TR/css-color-4/#binsearch) Martin remarks that this is related to "rendering intent" in LCMS2. Needs some more discussion on whether CSS reinvented this concept or accidentally fixed it to some specific value. Martin is looking into support for HDR colors in Inkscape. Some technical discussion about color spaces follows. Mike also added an experimental XYZ color picker. René contacted MacStadium again, they are in the final stages of drafting a sponsorship agreement (mostly their internal process), so we can get some more infrastructure. He will let us know if there is something to sign. New infrastructure is expected to be available for Christmas. The GNOME project is also in talks with MacStadium (as in, René is also running CI for them). Currently the infrastructure is not shared between GNOME and Inkscape, but René might suggest this again. He has also begun to rework how we package Python. Currently they are using custom shell scripts, but a build tool like jhbuild would be nicer. Hence, he's transitioning to Conan (https://conan.io/). This work will also allow to transition to Python 3.12 on Mac. Martin asks whether we should together a proposal to fund bugfixing for 1.4.1. Elendil agrees. - backporting - updating translation - updating graphics - fix some egregious issues reported since 1.4 Some additional discussion about asking for donations. Suggestions: Downloadable swag after you donate (e.g. some kind of file that makes the user interface shiny) or a dialog that pops up periodically like in Thunderbird. Martin remarks that this is not only about donations for the project, but also giving users means to participate (as contributors, or as decision-makers when contributing financially). Maybe even some kind of "Reddit Place" instead that it's a huge shape builder image where users can "buy" areas that they can draw on? Would be a nice experiment. The dev team plans to put together a proposal for an infrastructure project to update the website (Django) and add stripe integration.

Present: Ishaan, Elendil, Martin. Mike, Tav Tav: Incorrect implementation of text pickboxes, the code seems wrong. It does the calculation many times and doesn't cache the result We looked at various boxes related to text picking and selecting and if they were using these data. The goal is to be able to get color fonts like emoji to display. Also worked on an MR replacing FileDialog with new GtkDialogs. These new dialogs check when you're overwriting a file. Some things might need to be moved from "Save As" dialog to the Export dialog. Martin: Tuning test suite for PDF export, an HTML table to see the tests better. Some discussion on different color spaces as they relate to SVG and the PDF export. PDF Exporter doesn't need to be too clever. Mike: Mostly working on mega Color MR - roundtrip color conversion, etc. Some discussion on what should be present in the XML document when user selects the color in a different color space. Martin suggested that the picker should save to the default color space. The picker should also say which space it's saving in. Users should also be able to select different color spaces if they want. Some discussion on what happens when you select the color with a picker and how inkscape saves that in XML. Ishaan is looking at the page tool for selection cues as it does a similar thing when you drag around the page. It creates an outline and it covers a lot of cases for example markers. Though Ishaan found some bugs for example missing start markers on a closed path. Mike suggested to show some visual cue when objects are locked, maybe less saturated node handles and selection cue. Present: Elendil, Ishaan Arora, Martin, Mike, René, Jabiertxof Elendil reports that the bugtracker has been pretty healthy recently. Ishaan continued working on selection cues, working on the design. Some discussion about how to implement this. Jonathan briefly presented three proposed contract development projects: 1) GTK4 cross-platform fixes, 2) Improving Windows developer experience / dev documentation, 3) Website upgrades / better use of the CDN. Help is appreciated to formulate the goals of these projects, please contact him if you can help. Some discussion on 2). The prime goal is to improve the developer experience on Windows, to attract Windows developers. Questions: How much effort is necessary to build Inkscape with Visual Studio? Can we do it with GCC, or do we need to patch msvc? Martin raises the point that another compiler increases complexity of the codebase. René thinks that we should offer a native build experience, that means using msvc. He will look into whether there is a convenient way to hook up clang or gcc with VS to make sure that's not an option. There is a certain risk that this doesn't pay off - if we fail to attract Windows developers, this infrastructure would rot. René: how many wrappers would we need to create? Martin is working on PDF export as a C++ internal extension, and is improving the new upstream Library CapyPDF at the same time. This work will occupy him for some time. He describes the relationship with upstream as good. Mike has worked on the way we develop themes; they can now be written on SASS. He's also worked on decoding LAB colors from Adobe Color files. Some technical discussion between Mike and Martin about the Color API. René has been phasing out jobs on the Intel runner. He's on a bit of a break, waiting for the new MacStadium infrastructure, so he can set it up. The donated infrastructure would be valued around 700 USD per month. On the Windows side he's looking for cloud hoster that can provide Windows infrastructure for us. Martin thinks that this is important for programs like the Bugfix Accelerator. After the meeting, we've looked at some MRs.

Seeking your thoughts on LLM-generated contributions

Heya Inkscape Developers, Following up on an issue that came up a few months ago about code and other uses of LLMs; we at Software Freedom Conservancy have been hearing from member projects that people are asking whether they can submit code to these projects that was generated by large language models (LLMs), sometimes called AI coding assistants. We'd like to better understand the nature of these requests, how much LLM-generated code has been offered to these projects, and generally how you're feeling about the situation. To do this, we will be holding three different sessions, where you are welcome to join and share your thoughts and any details so far on these types of contributions. The sessions will all be run in the same way with the same topic - we are running three in order to hopefully allow as many people from around the world to attend as possible. Meeting Oct 6th 2024

Dear Developers, This week's developer meeting was a quiet one; it was Rene, Martin, Tav and Marc. Event: https://inkscape.org/cals/event/1/ We talked about the release and making sure everything is lined up. Marc is happy about the translations system he's created. Rene has one final commit to update the windows build infra, nothing for macOS. For the future, Rene is not going to upgrade the macOS version but is going to keep the intel machine so it can be booted up during releases, We looked at a merge request outstanding which was all about tanslations. There have been a couple of crashes which have been fixed and merged in time for the 1.4.x We reviewed the locations for various projects in gitlab and if things are organised correctly. Martin has been working on the capypdf integration, between C and C++ APIs and upstream headers. The next meeting is Monday the 14th October. Best Regards, Martin Owens
