win32 compiles

So, I changed Makefile.mingw.common to be created by "configure". This may cause some confusion for others trying to build from CVS. I set up the "make dist" to include the built file, so building win32 from a tarball should work easily. Also, JonCruz, I saw on the channel you said you didn't have win32 compiling set up, and weren't sure about one of your checkins. Inkscape at the world gathering of the SVG community ?

Hello Inkscape developers, I hereby invite you to SVG Open 2005, the international conference on Scalable Vector Graphics. At this event the SVG community from around the world gathers: the W3C SVG WorkGroup and people from very diverse backgrounds putting SVG to use, including implementors from most popular viewers and editors. Obviously, as Inkscape is deservingly becoming more and more popular, it would be very interesting for the SVG community if Inkscape would take part. Preferably also actively taking part through presenting a paper, organizing a panel discussion or teaching a course or a workshop. For this proposals, being just short abstracts, should be in before March 1st. I believe SVG Open will also bring a lot of useful input for Inkscape, both in getting to know about the latest SVG developments, useful ideas and other feedback, as also in growing its user, promotion and developer workforce. removing trivial inline functions

I submitted some patches that remove some of the trivial inline functions as stated in the InkscapeJanitors wiki section. For some reason one was submitted multiple times. It seems that after submitting a patch, if I refresh the screen, it submits the patch again. :/ Anyway, I hope I'm on the right track with the patches. I do have or had cvs access, but I've been away from c++ for a long time and figured I'd go the patch route so that a second set of eyes on the patches. inkscape compiled and seemed to work properly for me after the changes. cheers, -- Rob. http://woodpendant.com

As pixel preview would get a shortcut to toggle, it would be easy to switch between the two. Having both at the same time would only create visual noise. As for Bulia's comment. We certainly don't need it because Illustrator has it. Let me explain its usefulness. While having a "true" 1:1 view is what appears to be enough to be able pixel-position objects, not everyone has eyes of a teenager and an LCD ;) It is way easier to pixel position artwork when you see the pixels as huge blocks, instead of staring at the 16x16 artwork at 1:1 at 5cm distance from the display ;) Oh and btw I noticed the SDI makes it really hard to have a second view of the artwork since it has all the menus, all the toolbars, and need to be quite a large window. cheers -- Jakub Steiner <jimmac@...659...> Novell, Inc.

Hi all, With the 0.41 Hard Freeze finished and the release package posted, it's time to move into the final phase of the release, where we post packages and submit PR to blogs and the news media. Kees has been kind enough to take responsibility for producing the Windows and static rpm packages. Since these are often the most frequent downloads, I'm comfortable doing the announcement sooner than usual, however I'd like to provide packagers at least a full day to create platform specific packages. If you are comfortable creating packages, you can help us greatly right now by downloading the release and creating a package for your system. For example, we need packages for old and new versions of SuSE, Fedora Core, Mandrake, Slackware, and (especially) Mac OSX. Thank you answers, meanwhile I found a workaround :) My text edit dialog always open, attached to the main window, so it shows the current text always. It's okay, now. But (a new request follows ;) the dialogs disappear when the main window lose the focus. Now, inkscape gets a whole virtual desktop, so it is not a problem, but it would be very kind to get an option to off this feature (in future, not too important one). Thanks, Aewyn

forward declaration header files

Ok, it looks like we need to have a chat about these "*forward.h" files I see cropping up that keep killing my rebuild times when I try to do class-level refactoring. I realize the intent was to reduce #include dependencies, but they actually make the problem far worse: since a whole lot of unrelated stuff is grouped in one file that everyone includes, adding or removing a class requires a rebuild of fricking EVERYTHING... And, really, do you need a header file for this? -- class Foo; class Blah; No, you do not. It's wasteful. All it asserts is that the classes (or structs) Foo and Blah definitely exist somewhere, to keep the compiler happy and avoid ambiguity. You can perfectly well put that directly in files where Foo or Blah are used opaquely without losing any maintainability (if either class gets removed or renamed, you'll need to edit those files regardless). Best thing is the files that only use Foo and not Blah won't need to be recompiled if Blah is removed or renamed anymore... So, please, STOP USING THESE BLOODY FORWARD HEADERS. I am removing xml/xml-forward.h today. I don't want to see any new ones cropping up. -mental

Install problems and then bigger ones

Oh my! Well, I'm between a successful make (after finally getting configure to work) and the make install when I read this. I have installed all these rpms (I just didn't scroll far enough to see them before) and now what? Should I continue with the install? Should I remove the rpms? Next step?????? This looks like something that might be documented a bit better on the web site.... Thanks so much for the info...I have never seen such comprehensive and impressive responses on a list before. My mail box (and yours as well) is full of thoughtful replies. Says this is where to go for compile problems

Howdy...just heard about Inkscape this AM. I am not a developer, would be a casual user at best, but would like to take a gander. User, repeat USER, of Fedora Core 3. Not a coder, programmer (or even artist for that matter!) However I'm having problems compiling. When I ran configure it told me configure: error: libgc (the Boehm Conservative Collector) 6.4+, is needed to compile Inkscape -- http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Hans_Boehm/gc Fair enough. I got it (and thanks for including the URL) and it compiled fine without me changing or doing anything--just accepted its defaults and whiz, in it went. OK, back to Inkscape and configure croaks at the same place. Same error message. What do I need to do to have Inkscape know this is in, or how do I need to compile, install, whatever to communicate that? Thanks- Jim Clark

I have just committed a fix for bug 962839 where keyboard shortcuts didn't work if you switch keyboard to a non-English layout. The fix seems to work at least for Cyrillic keyboard on Linux. Please test and report your results.

svg and svgz io

I got my changes committed. It now uses xmlReadIO instead of xmlParseFile, so it should handle 'tricky' AKA non-ASCII/ANSI filenames on Windows. Additionally, it now has an extension for .svgz and the saving and loading inside of repr-io.cpp handles the compression using zlib ourselves, so it should work nice on Linux *and* on Windows with not tricky futzing. To do this, I started using the stuff in Inkscape::IO / src/io/* Take a peek and see if this stuff works for you guys also.

perspective / free-transform code in inkscape from gimp

G'day guys, Whenever I have needed to transform a vector Illustration along a perspective I've had to go through the horrible process of: - importing my svg as paths into gimp - exporting and opening in inkscape - re-drawing all colours, stroke preferences and gradients to suit the new angle. with the transformed rasterisation from gimp as a reference.. free-transform is a feature that I and no doubt many more artists are desperate for within inkscape. Without it creates a limit to the range of artwork produceable from within inkscape While i was visiting PJRM & NJH in melbourne I discussed this process and how it would be sweet if we could grab some of the gimp code to allow inkscape to do a perspective transform. PJRM made an awesome modification a while ago where after transforming a group in some way, all ungrouped objects are no longer stuck with a transform matrix applied to each object. The location of all things are now converted into each shape's coords. So that now saves bloat and to my understanding also helped solve one massive problem with inkscape files being rendered in rsvg and transform matricies not being taken into account. End of Hard Freeze for 0.41 Release

Hi all, Bulia and Kees have given word that the codebase is now ready for release. Ted has tagged and branched, and has posted the release tarball. Kees is working on producing the release packages. We're putting in the final tweaks to the release announcements and notes. At this time, the codebase is now officially unfrozen and open for regular development. We have had a very good, strict release with 0.41. We have been very cautious about adding new dependencies, and focused heavily on bug fixing. For 0.42, we're going to change gears. This release will be much more freeform and open to aggressive new changes. Bug fixing will take second seat to feature implementation and major architectural changes. As soon as you're ready, feel free to merge in code that's been sitting on the sidelines for 0.41. I expect this will destabilize the codebase for quite some time to come, but that's okay. It may be a number of months before we're ready to make another release, but with such a strong 0.41 release out the door we're well set for this development phase. During this next phase, there are two rules I think would be worthwhile for us to abide. The first is to strive to always keep the codebase buildable within a day. In other words, be respectful of the needs of other developers by trying to only check in compilable code, and if you don't, to correct it within 24 hrs. Second, if you want to add a new dependency to the codebase, please discuss this on the mailing list first. We definitely can add new dependencies for 0.42 but let's make sure we have a rough concensus favoring it before committing. The first rule will save us pain in the short term, the second will save us pain in the long term. :-) Thanks everyone, and great work with 0.41! Have fun with 0.42. :-) Bryce

graphics suite and consistancy, bug lists

First another screenshot of the gimp close dialog. unforuntately this one is different. if you have not already saved a file it fails to give you the option to Save and instead gives you a different dialog with only close and discard. http://www.maths.tcd.ie/~horkana/gimp-close-unsaved.png I'll probably have to file a bug about this later, but it will be hard for inkscape to be consistant with an application that is not consistant with itself. Back to the oringal purpose of this message I decided I'd rummage through bugzilla and try and pick out some bugs or issues that might help with consistancy issues, so that if anyone was interested they might sign up to gnome bugzilla and make some suggestions with respect to Inkscape. by influencing the future direction of the gimp it might make consistancy with Inkscape easier later on report discussing the modifier keys used by some of the GIMP tools, might be worth noting in any discussions on keyboard shortcuts http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=120973 request for a "Customizable Toolbar" and this would probably be similar to the top toolbar in inkscape. http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=133030 report about XMP and IPTC might be of interst, points to lots of other relevant bugs http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=94416 request to reorganise the gimp scripts and filters http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=116145 some ideas but no definative plan the Wiki also features a discussion on menu reorganisation http://wiki.gimp.org/gimp/GimpMenuReorganization There are probably more bits and pieces of gimp developement that active users or developers could take a quick look at and add their opinion to help try and make things more consistant. SVG tutorial translation

Hi list, In August last year (08/2004) we had a small thread in this list discussing new ways of making the translation process of the tutorials in svg format easier. TMX and XLIFF formats were mentioned and I remember talking about not having tools for these formats. A few days ago I read about the freedesktop.org XLIFF tools project: http://xliff-tools.freedesktop.org/wiki/ and googling a bit for "xml to xliff" conversion tools I found several initiatives (this one very nicely illustrated http://infomanagementcenter.com/pdfs/translation_wxml_tools.pdf). SVG::Metadata 0.21 released

Version 0.21 of SVG::Metadata has been released to CPAN tonight. Changes: * Added a metadata edit feature to svg_annotate. The script now accepted a '-e' parameter which allows altering the metadata in an SVG file. It does this in the crudest possible fashion: It parses the file for metadata, makes the modification you request, then deletes all the metadata, then re-inserts the metadata back into the file. Beware! This could really fsck up your SVG files, make sure to keep backups before running, etc. If it does, send me a bug report. * Fixed bug where SVG::Metadata parses the publisher info incorrectly, causing further writes to display it as HASH. * Entirely removed an if clause that was causing 'improvisedkeywordparse', 'HASH', etc. to appear in keywords. This was just a hack around a bug in Inkscape that's been fixed for a few releases anyway, so the code's not that useful. * Fixed the problem that was causing the above bug to begin with. It now assumes the 'subject' field is proper RDF instead of permitting freeform text, as Inkscape used to do long, long ago. * Removed the default values for the cmdline options for license and title. Now they default to blank (''). This was done so that when running `svg_annotate -e`, it won't change contents of your SVG metadata to the defaults. * Changed the default for title from 'Clipart by <AUTHOR> - <FILEBASE>' to just '<FILEBASE>'. "Bug" with command line export

Hi all, first message on this list (following a first chat on jabber, lots of "first" today). I found a "bug" using inkscape 0.39 at the command line under mac (sorry but I can't spend all the necessary time to recompile CVS on my mac and I don't think this was mentionned before, so this wasn't fixed either probably). Anyway I wanted to export some file.svg to file.png: inkscape -d 72 -b white -e file.png file.svg as long as file.png does not exists, everything is fine. when file.png exists i receive a long list of errors starting like this: (process:12102): Gtk-WARNING **: Screen for GtkWindow not set; you must always set a screen for a GtkWindow before using the window (process:12102): Gtk-CRITICAL **: file gtkiconfactory.c: line 1224 (gtk_icon_size_lookup_for_settings): assertion `GTK_IS_SETTINGS (settings)' failed (process:12102): Gtk-WARNING **: gtkstyle.c:2037: invalid icon size '4' (process:12102): Gtk-CRITICAL **: file gtkstyle.c: line 1903 (gtk_style_render_icon): assertion `pixbuf != NULL' failed (process:12102): Gtk-WARNING **: Theme engine failed to render icon (process:12102): Gdk-CRITICAL **: file gdkpango-x11.c: line 53 (gdk_pango_context_get_for_screen): assertion `GDK_IS_SCREEN (screen)' failed [....long list of the same type of errors...] I imagine it is because inkscape tries to open a GTK windows asking me if I want to overwrite the existing file.png. a GTK window can't be opened because I launch this from the Terminal.app (and X11 is possibly not even started). But the point is that: -even if I run this command line on an xterm inside X11, I get the same errors -even if I add the "-z" option to the command line, I get the same errors If I try to export the same file from inside inkscape i got the correct dialog and I can export my file and overwrite the existing one without problems. So I think that on system where GTK is not "native" (I think it's a bad word but maybe you can understand what I mean) GTK popup windows like this can't be opened. Therefore, I think that, to make this command line tool more robust, it might be remplaced by a text sent to the standard output (terminal) asking if the user wants to overwrite the file or not. at least when the -z option is explicitely mentionned. thanks in advance for any help with this. ask me for precisions if yo need to. Keywords issue between OCAL and Inkscape

Uraeus pointed out that the keywords added by svg_annotate don't show up in Inkscape. It looks like svg_annotate is inserting the keywords correctly, more or less. (It doesn't add id numbers to the elements, but I'm fairly sure that's not required anyway.) The problem appears to be that Inkscape is not reading the keyword info in. It's simple to check this: * Start up a new drawing in inkscape * Draw a circle or something * Go to Document Properties > Metadata and type "asdf" for a keyword * Save the file and exit inkscape * cat the saved file and note that asdf is in the keywords section * Load the file in Inkscape again * Go to the Document Properties > Metadata page. No keywords shown. I've submitted a bug report on the above. Bryce

The one problem I can think of off the top of my head that could occur with this is if the data that the upload tool receives is not consistent in its encoding -- e.g., if the SVG it receives is in one encoding, and the metadata the user fills in on the form is sent by the browser in a different encoding. Next up URI madness!!!!

Well... now that 0.41 is all chilly and such, time to start thinking of next things to do. One of the ugly, sneaky, subtle probleme we have is URIs. What is a URI? Do we want to use URIs all over? Is there something else we want to use instead? Some places we have a 'gchar const *uri', Inkscape::URI, and 'gchar const *filename'. The first (sometimes) is some string representation that might be a URI The second is a class for a 'URI' as defined in RFC 2396 The third is just a local file path. One problem is that often the first and third get mixed up. Another problem is that URI's are supposed to be encoded in escaped ASCII, and all the glib routines like g_filename_from_uri expect properly formed URI strings. So there are things we use as file paths and such that break when treated as pure URIs. Soo....... what should we do about this mess?

Object Rotation

I just wanted to say that having the degrees on the taskbar follow the objects rotation is fantastic. It makes 1 and 2 degree snapping very useable for me. I can even get 72 degrees now. :) Thanks very much. And I just found another really fun use for inkscape: creating gDesklets <http://gdesklets.gnomedesktop.org/>. AI Input

There is a bug in the .inx file for AI input. One of the attributes got changed to the wrong name. It looks like it happened when changing a bunch of other values. Without the fix AI input will not work unless the extensions directory is put into the path. I've attached a patch, which I believe should be put in for 0.41. --Ted

Last minute file naughiness

Well... I went on a last-minute search for file naughtiness. There are a few pixbuf loads here and there, but I'll ignore them for now. The one I am concerned about is in repr-io.cpp, in sp_repr_read_file I *think* that's the last main one, but is a biggie, so I'm going to try to munge things in. Of course, this is very sensitive stuff, so it will need verifying to ensure all is happy-happy everywhere.

Peter: Please don't touch line-height property which I added to style.cpp. Reasons: 1. CSS2 says: "User agents must ignore a declaration with an unknown property." This means even if it is an invalid property, it will do no harm. It will just be ignored. 2. In SVG 1.1, line height is just given a fixed value equal to font-size. Our specifying a different value will have no effect whatsoever on compliant renderers. 3. SVG 1.2 indeed does not mention line-height for flowtext (as I wrote here some time ago). But it also proposes NO OTHER mechanism for controlling inter-line spacing. So I'm inclined to think that this is just an omission in the standard. If you're so worried by it, you can go to the W3C SVG list and raise this issue there. I'm reasonably sure that when made aware of the omission, the authors will reuse line-height as this is the most natural approach. 4. Without a way to control line spacing, flowtext is pretty much useless. So, if we cannot use line-height nor any other mechanism for that, I see no reason to continue working on flowtext. In other words, the choice we have is between completing the draft spec where it's most obviously incomplete, or just giving up and not having flowtext at all.

inkscape.svg vs plain.svg

Hi, I have been going through the openclipart.org flag collection yesterday, cleaning up metadata etc. There is a couple of issues I would like to bring up which I noticed in this process. The first thing is that images saved in sodipodi.svg/inkscape svg do not always render correctly with librsvg. I filed a bug with librsvg on this, but the reply I got is that this is caused by sodipodi/inkscape svg not being fully SVG compliant. Saving the flags with prolems as plain.svg made them all render correctly. Now the question is wether I should file these flags towards Inkscape as bugs, I assume so, as I think if we generate a file with .svg it should render nicely in all other SVG renderers? For some testfiles all the pirate flags in openclipart 0.10 misrender until resaved as plain svg. librsvg bug with some details here: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=166385 The second thing which I have brought up with Jon Cruz and Bryce already is that there is some difference in metadata handling between svg_annotate/svg_validate and Inkscape. Inkscape do not recognize keywords set by svg_annotate and svg_validate do not recognize titles set by Inkscape for instance. To try to see if bug 1114714 is fixed, can someone on Win32 add some asserts and test things? Well, by including the .cpp you essentially are pasting the contents of that file in, so it's getting the full definition of all the functions. However, having multiple definitions of functions in your binary will cause trouble later, so we should solve the problem more directly... Try this. [0.41] Fix link: Move functions from splivarot.cpp to xml/

A couple of utility functions in splivarot.cpp have become used by xml/repr-util.cpp. The attached patch moves these two functions (LCA and AncetreFils) to new files xml/repr-sorting.{cpp,h} in xml/libspxml.a. This is appropriate for cleanliness, and also fixes a link problem with `make check'. Since we're in hard freeze, I haven't renamed these functions. (N.B. Remember to do `cvs add -ko xml/repr-sorting.{cpp,h}' after applying this patch.) The patch (like the gc one, I should have mentioned in the previous message) is from the src directory. pjrm.

[0/5]: patches for clean "make check"

Following this email are five patch sets (whose apply order matters). This is a full roll-up of changes Peter and I worked on last night with some additional updates to get "make check" to fully pass. 1/5: compile cleanups only This is makefile goo for getting "make check" to compile correctly. 2/5: test code changes only This is test-code changes only. No core code changes are needed to make these tests pass "make check". 3/5: core code changes for repr-action-test compiling This is a change to the way core code is layed out in the tree, to help compile repr-action-test more easily. The functions are unchanged. 4/5: core code changes for repr-action-test behavior This changes when an undo session is released, down in simple-session. This lets repr-action-test pass its tests. The only caller to sp_repr_rollback is sp_document_cancel. sp_document_cancel isn't easily callable, since the three calls to it currently would only happen during repr tree breakage in the XML editor. I think this is safe. 5/5: win32 file list updates This is just a final sync of all the above file changes, as seen by the win32 file list building tools. "make check" finished, but "make distcheck" does not, as streamtest depends on files local to its directory, which is against build rules for "distcheck". I will fix it later, since I made it relocatable in patch #2. -- Kees Cook @outflux.net
