The Object Properties dialog box has properties Visible and Printable. Currently, we map Visible in the Object Properties dialog to SVG's visibility attribute, while we use a custom attribute for Printable. When would in-inkscape visibility differ from on-paper visibility? - Visible on screen but not printable for guide lines/shapes. - Printable but not hidden [or 90% transparent?] on screen for temporary editing convenience. I'd guess that the user wants the same things to be printable as they want to be exported to PNG or generally visible as part of the image to be seen by viewers. If "seen by viewers" includes the use of other SVG agents (e.g. use of a command-line tool for printing or exporting to another format, or embedding in e.g. HTML before printing), then that suggests we should use SVG's visibility property for Printable, and use custom data to indicate what things are currently visible/hidden. Comments? pjrm.

Hey guys, how do I put a guide to a specific position? The guides dialog only sets the guide's relative position. I need absolute positioning most of the time, but haven't found the property in the preferences dialog. David

ghost spikes

Now the biggest problem with the calligraphy tool is the ghost spikes - sudden long and thin spikes that burst sometimes from the stroke sideways. They are actually visible, unlike the ghost spikes of the pencil tool. Apparently they are caused by the same reason, since both tools use the same bezier fitter. Peter, have you had any progress on this issue? Can you look into the calligraphic spikes as well?

Until yesterday, I considered Inkscape's calligraphy tool pretty useless. It was too weird and not really suited for any real work. It turns out I was wrong. The problem with this tool was that its most useful mode - flat nib - was disabled and there was no UI to enable it. As a result, the Angle control had no effect because the "pen" was actually more of a "brush". I fixed this, and even made the transition from flat to round a gradual one, controlled by the new Flatness control (0 = round nib, 1 = flat nib). (Actually 0 is not "round", but the pen is always rotated perpendicular to the stroke direction; any suggestions for a better term?) I also added a Thinning control which tells how much to change the width of the stroke depending on velocity (0 = uniform width, >0 makes faster strokes thinner, <1 makes faster strokes broader). I also changed the defaults of the rest of the parameters. With these changes, the tool is now capable to do some real calligraphy. I added manually <g id="l1" title="Layer1" label="Layer1" inkscape:groupmode="layer"> ... </g> around the content of a file. Two problems: - on open, it shows (root). I think we agreed that if there's a single layer it must be entered on load if there's no current layer remembered in namedview? - it shows #l1 so title and label are ignored. What is the way to set the visible title apart from id?

gradient display bug

this is a _really_ annoying bug... when you have several texts with gradients or (or is just one enough?) you'll very fast end up with broken gradient display in the text. I just tried just writing some text, adding a gradient, changing the gradient, doublicating the text, moving the doublicate. and "peng" the original object has a totally broken gradient displayed... Can anyone confirm? my build is a few days old, it's not since long, that this bug has been introduced, I'm sure. David

Mandrake, autopackage and gtk+ problem

On Mandrake 10.0, i'm trying to install the nightly build autopackage and get the following error : Error: Could not find 'GTK+ user interface toolkit'. Try using the native package manager for Mandrakelinux (urpmi) to install a package with similar name to 'gtk+'. But when I execute "urmpi --fuzzy gtk+" to query my installed packages database I get : gtk+2.0 gtk+licq gtk+licq-base gtk+licq-nognome libgtk+-linuxfb-2.0_0 libgtk+-linuxfb-2.0_0-devel libgtk+-x11-2.0_0 libgtk+1.2 libgtk+1.2-devel libgtk+2.0_0 libgtk+2.0_0-devel I think that gtk+ is correctly installed but autopackage cannot find it. Maybe an environment variable for gtk+ as to be set ? BR Pierre

default template + screenshots

Just a quick note that I added an initial layer to the default template. Now new documents will be created with "Layer 1" active. Also the hide/lock buttons now at last look correct (though they are not functional yet). This means that Inkscape's face is now fit for shooting. Please send here (or submit to patch tracker) your screenshots showing the nice things you are doing with Inkscape CVS. The more complex and beautiful is the stuff on your canvas, the better. Show something that not everyone can do! The best shots will be published on the site in time for the 0.40 release.

Static c++ libs , part 2

Re: the previous msg , about the libgccpp.a probs. I tried manually linking Inkscape, inkview, and gimpgrad.so without libgccpp.a, and they worked perfectly. So, I would like to remove --enable-cplusplus from the boehm dependencies that we have, and libgccpp.a. Does that sound OK? As far as I can tell, we are always using Mental's C++ classes which use the Boehm C API. Is that right? If so, I'd like to only use that part of Boehm, and not have that extra .h file possibly polluting new() and delete(). Bob

Some more small things : * When no object is selected, the proportion lock icon is not sensitive (unlike the other icons of the same bar) (lock_icon_object.png) * When layer is unlocked, the lock icon is not displayed (lock_icon_layer.png) * A nice to have with layer would be an additional tool : move to another layer (not only previous and next) * It's the first time I'm playing with layers, and I'm a bit surprised : xml seems not to be affected by the operations I make with them (no lock or display tag in xml). I'm able to create new layers, create/delete some object in them, raise/lower them delete the layers. But I'm not able to move objects from a layer to another (even next/previous) and have no action on lock/display Pity, I felt really excited with them (it was the only thing that i was missing with Inkscape). But I hope (quite confident with it), it'll soon be 100% available * Unlike star/polygon and spiral tool bars, ellipse and rectangle have no "reset to default" icon * The 'object' menu may be renamed to 'selection' as all the operations it lists affect all the objects selected (selection) * The open ellipse item in the ellipse tool bar is not sensitive (unless the ellipse has been opened with the controls on canvas) * When I select several objects and call the fill and stroke dialog, it displays a kind of mean of the characteristics of the objects. Well yes and no : First : at the moment I'm at work, take some time during my pause (lunch break) to have a look and test some few things with Inkscape. But I'm under windows, and I face many problems opening/editing .po files. (If some of you know about any cool tool under win2k...) But when home, no problem (hope I will be able to take a look at it this WE) Plus it's not always obvious (French is not always very 'logical', plus I'm not a vector drawing software specialist and my vocabulary might be wrong sometime. I'd like to compare with other 'similar' software, but sorry I can't afford paying the price of Illustrator or Freehand just for having some vocabulary comparison) to have the appropriate translation, and I'd prefer discuss some points with some other French speaking translators (such as Frederic) before committing stupid mistakes. Hi Inkscape developers: a few things I've noticed on Inkscape, on the following configuration : Win2k, French, 5-Nov-2004 Build. First : about layers. * The layer indication in the bottom of the window is not clearly displayed. I think it is linked with the fonts used. Thought it had already been submitted and fixed, but in fact no. See the small capture. (layers.png) -> Do I submit a new bug ? * I'd like being able to rename the layers. It is ok from the xml editor, but I think it would be a good idea to be able to do it from the layer menu ? RFE ? * Last point : would it be a good idea to have a layer dialog (a bit like align/distribute...) ? I think yes, some people prefer having simply menu and shortcuts ? RFE ? Then : something I've noticed because of the different length of words according to the various translations. See small capture (trad2.png) When modifing an existing rectangle (elipse, star, spiral...), in French (but I think it might be present with some other languages), the tool bar displays 'angement' instead of 'Changement'. Is it possible to adjust the size of those displays dynamically ? (same thing with some other buttons) RFE ? BUG ? n fact, until a last month, spammers used to disturb only a few pages each time, but now they are becomming more annoying. Each time, the wiki is spammed, it affects up to 20 pages. Really a nuisance to remove this. URI class

Well... to get some stuff cleaned up, I've started a bit of tune-up on the URI class. I've added a few methods, but also added Doxygen comments. The latter might make a difference, as I'm counting on the class behaving the way I've described, so checking things over to be sure the docs are proper and in sync would be helpful. Of course, if anyone cares, they can also check to see if I did any late-night careless stuff. (Oh, and diff with ignoring whitespace).

Hi, I extended the german translation (layers, path on text, some translations left on the menue) also I did some finetuning: put the BOLD where the originals also shows the bold btw: there was a question in the translation comments: what is the difference between cut and break a path ? Also there is a new menue point: Inkscape->File->New->"layers" ??? therefore is no translation in the po-file prepared. Thanks, Adib.

hi would it possible to add keyboard shortcuts to align actions. I thikn such shortcuts might be useful because aligning is one of the most often used actions when creating vector graphics and necessity to press ctrl+a and then move mouse and then click in order to align objects is IMHO just not user-friendly. would it be possible to add shortcuts for align? i come from the "corel-country" and i'm used to C(enter-horizontally), (c)E(nter-verically),T(op),B(ottom),R(ight),L(eft) keys. unfortunately they are mostly reserved for other actions (i.e elipse, rectangle etc). but that's not a problem i could swith to other keys :-) since i use inkscape mostly for designing website layouts my second question is: would it be possible to add pixel as another unit? it would made exporting images of certain size easier (read: it would made my, and hopefully also others' life easier :-) thanks for the great app! best regards yemu -- www.cezarybiele.com

I notice the Object Properties dialog has changed. Questions: Why are Title and Description always disabled? What is Label? It's made from the id obviously but pressing Update informs me that it is "invalid". Hey, I did not put it there! Why Inkscape gives me something which he (Inkscape) knows to be invalid? Most importantly, where did the id= field go? We must keep a way to edit id, even if we add more stuff to this dialog.

This is similar to Win32 DLL's, in that when you make a standalone shared object, everything must be defined explicitly, unlike in an executable. Can we remove libgccpp.a as a dependency? I think Mental has wrappers around the C part instead. Below is the link error with gimpgrad.so. Anyway, that's how it goes so far. I hope others will give this a try. Cheers! Cleanup of file import & drag-n-drop

I noticed that the code in the drag-n-drop for input is a copy-n-paste duplicate of code that used to be in file.cpp. At the moment it's duplicated by the extension mechanism, so we get two different code paths executed for dragging a file onto a doc versus importing a file via File|Import... menu item. I was thinking that these should be changed, with the duplicated (and stale) code in interface.cpp removed and calling that in file.cpp. Are there any subtlties I might be missing in here, or is it just a classic rogue tile bug pattern and in bad need of that cleanup?

I made the automatically created new gradients garbage-collectable. I hope this is the last change to gradients for this release, it was necessary because otherwise it was easy to grow the gradient list out of proportions (though it was also easy to shrink it by vacuuming defs, but this could crash Fill&Stroke; now it does not mind when gradients are deleted from under it). However when a gradient is edited (e.g. stops added), it is not autocollectable anymore. Please test this as thoroughly as you can. Here's the complete Release Notes entry for gradients: * When you switch an object to gradient fill or stroke, the new gradient is created with that object's previous fill or stroke color going from 1 to 0 opacity (instead of the hardcoded black-to-white fully opaque gradient as before). New objects do not share gradients now, except when you switch to gradient multiple selected objects with the same fill color (you can also explicitly set two or more objects to use the same gradient by selecting it in the list in the Fill and Stroke dialog, or by pasting style from one object to another). Newly created gradients are automatically garbage-collected when no longer used; however, when you edit a gradient in the Gradient Editor, it becomes sticky and can only be removed, when not in use, by the Vacuum Defs command.

We're in the run-up to another release, and as can be seen by the dent in the bug count since last report, things are going well. Some progress was achieved this weekend on the layer UI, but there is still work to be done. There's also now nearly a full year's worth of status data, and it's interesting to compare today's numbers with those we started from. To me the most striking number is the linecount. According to the statistics, Inkscapers have added almost twice as many lines of code and comments as we started with. The growth in documentation is also quite noteworthy. Also for the first time we have more subscribers to our announce list than membership on our devel list. one gradient for multiple objects

When you want multiple objects to have the same userpace gradient you have to group them now (was already this way in the build I had from cvs in mid october). That sucks, since maybe you don't want to group them because there are objects between them (z-order wise). Now, I think the problem is that for each object there is a new gradient created on switching to gradient from solid. Therefore right after the switch you have two objects with two different gradients selected and hence can't edit the gradient(s).

windows builds?

Sorry to be pushy, but the crash on save Windows bug is very bad, and I want to check asap if JonCruz fixed it or not. Right now I don't have time to set up windows builds on my machine, so I rely on http://inkscape.org/win32-snap/. However the latest build there is from 29 oct. Is there a newer one somewhere?

Okay, I've made a tarball for 0.40pre1 so that people can make packages for testing. This is not feature complete for 0.40, but it would be nice if everyone could use this to find more bugs. can't undo delete layer

just got myself the newest cvs to find some bugs. I noticed, that undoing deleting a layer is not possible. I'd call that a mayor bug! Also the fontsize of "(root)" in the combobox in the statusbar is decreased when you have a layer selected. Strange, I'd say.

Some Usage Notes

I recently used Inkscape for a little bit of my "real work", and I took a few notes to share. I was using the Sept 24th build on Win 2000, which I know is a bit old. I'll grab the latest build as soon as I get a chance and start taking notes with that. Anyway, take these for what they're worth... Text on a path is very cool. It would be nice to be able to drag the starting point of the text along the curve. Alt+Click does not seem to work to select under in the select tool. Middle mouse pan and zoom is great and should be in every application! Maybe Shift+MM Drag could work like dragging a box with the zoom tool. It would make the middle mouse button more complete as the document navigation button. I wouldn't ever have to switch to the zoom tool. I'll make an RFE. The open file dialog freezes for a while right after I make my first click in the file area (even if it's a directory, or other item that needs no preview) Editing paths becomes very slow, almost to the point of becoming unusable, at high zoom levels, or with modestly complex paths. Text Dialog takes a long time to pop up. The font used for menus is smaller than that used by other applications. Keep up the good work! Michael Wheeler http://www.planet-zero.net

static prerelease builds?

It's very nice to see the overwhelming response to the bug review call. Thanks everyone. Now, the other thing we need to do is, of course, finding more bugs to fix :) With the recent bugfixes, I think the time to test it in earnest has come. So I would like to ask if anyone is capable of providing periodic builds of Inkscape to be uploaded to SF as a testing/prerelease series, the same as Ted did for 0.39. However the important thing about the 0.40 testing builds is that they must be linked statically. With all the new libraries we now use, and with all the reported incompatibilities of their versions, it is critically important that at least Boehm and libsigc++ are static, and maybe also gtkmm and others. This will make it so much easier for people to try out the builds. We will have to provide static builds of the final release, so why not start testing the static build process right now. Any volunteers?

Relative paths

I've hit two issues 1) There appears to be a bug in sp_relative_path_from_path that chokes when you go up above the current directory. Like if you try to reference and image you'd expect to end up "../../other/thing.png" 2) Image paths currently are 'fixed' to be relative when you save svg. For problem #1 I know what to do. However, for problem #2 I'd want to confirm desired behavior. I was thinking that the proper thing would be to fixup to relative paths whenever a file is first imported. Does this sound reasonable?

No Snap for transforming

Inkscape 0.40 release planning

At the beginning of this month we kicked around the idea of doing an interim release, because even though we're not 100% done with the goals, there's a lot of new features and the time feels right for a new release. :-) We considered either calling it 0.39.5 and keeping with the roadmap as is, or calling it 0.40 and bumping the roadmap a bit. I believe there was a rough concensus for the latter at the time - this still true? In any case, the two tasks facing us right now are the same: 1. Finish up current work 2. Fix bugs (esp. the more noticeable ones) Like we've done in past releases, I'll begin posting critical bug summaries daily from now until the release so we can track our progress. How do we want to track it? * Fix X % of the critical bugs (e.g. fix 50% of crits)? * Reduce the bug list to a threshhold (e.g. 100?)? * Identify N specific bugs to fix? I browsed through the bug list yesterday, and we seem to be in fairly good shape (thanks most likely to the continuing attention the bug list receives). There are fewer crash bugs listed than we've had in the past, and most of those occur only in special situations (such as Win32-only), but some of the remaining bugs are particularly hard ones to fix. In any case, let me know what you think we should set as the goal for this release, and I'll start posting our progress on that by the 26th. Bryce

I understand there had been some debate about including rendering-color-space in this version of the standard... I just wanted to note that for us (the Inkscape project) at least there is strong desire for the inclusion of rendering-color-space; in practical terms ICC colors aren't much use for our intended audience without it; this is particularly true in the case of for-print CYMK work. Our ground rule so far has been to adopt no extensions that affect rendering; if we can't do compositing in a CYMK color space within the confines of the standard, we would probably end up putting off support of ICC colors altogether. -mental

Happy Birthday Inkscape!

Has it only been ONE year? Yep, today, October 26, 2004 is Inkscape's first anniversary. This time last year we registered Inkscape with SourceForge and poured ourselves into converting it over to C++. Our first public announcement of the founding of the Inkscape project occurred a bit over a week later, on Nov 6th, to be followed closely by our first release to Freshmeat on Nov 10th. http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=3416220&forum_id=3970 It's been an amazing year with the project. We've had five very solid releases, each a major advancement over the previous. We've taken a project from scratch to being included standard in nearly every major Linux distro. Tens of thousands of people use Inkscape today! Most importantly, we've succeeded in building a very open and prolific development team, and have been fortunate in gaining a very supportive and friendly user community. For the year to come, I think we can look forward to gaining solutions to many of the features and issues we're worrying about right now like PDF, extensions, Gtkmm, etc. CSS will probably be a major effort, but one we'll gain a huge amount of benefit from. I think (hope) we'll see expansion of Inkscape's audience to include technical drawing in a big way. I'd like to put some effort into building up a healthy donation system since we already have users asking about that. I also hope we can continue to expand the size of the development team and the userbase. We should continue to encourage users to peek under the hood and fiddle with stuff; I'm hopeful the extensions system will also provide an easy way for users to get involved. We would also do well to expand our efforts at demoing and presenting Inkscape at trade shows and conferences. Congratulations and thank you to everyone that's helped us get this far, and look forward to seeing what Inkscape can achieve in 2005. :-) Bryce

CVS won't run

Hello, I've been having the same problem for quite some time; the CVS version compiles but then it doesn't run. It just hogs the cpu and nothing happens and I have to kill it. Stable version works fine. There seem to be no error messages during compilation. I've tried several times, latest was a few hours ago. If you'd like any kind of information about my system libraries etc, just ask. I'm on gentoo linux. I'd like to solve this! Thanks, Johan Forsberg

sf inkscape web directory

Well, I've been looking around at the inkscape directory, and noticed some interesting things. The SF docs say there is a 100M quota in the group area. However, the "quota" command doesn't show any configured quotas. Additionally, we're using over 200M of storage. (148M of that is the doxygen docs.) I'm worried that keeping 30 days of CVS snapshots will compound our disk utilization. (As well as possible win32 mirrors.) I was doing some low-level hacking on image support and DPI, and found an interesting thing Images I created in The GIMP and set to 72 DPI there came out to have a stored value of 2835 pixels per meter. On the other hand, a png that had been created in Inkscape a while back had a stored value of 2834 pixels per meter. One saved today had no chunk for DPI, at least not before the image data.

text node ids

I noticed that sometimes, <text> nodes in a document are assigned different ids on load without obvious reason - there's no id clash in the source document. I found out that this is caused by text repr nodes (i.e. text strings, not <text> elements) being assigned their own id= too, even though this id is not seen or editable anywhere and is not saved with the document. And the problem is that these text node ids also start with "text" followed by a number, and therefore can clash with <text> ids forcing them to re-id. I fixed this by making these text nodes use ids starting with "string" instead of "text". The change is in line 76 of repr.cpp. I hope this does not break anything; comments are welcome.

Snapping behavior

Hello! I'm still having a tough time with Inkscape's snapping behavior. I'm trying to use it for technical illustration, and thus I find myself moving very large chunks of my drawings around throughout the design process, and need things to line up perfectly. This is made more difficult by snapping confusion with the following points: 1. Text snapping appears to snap to all edges of a particular text block. Would there be any interest to changing this to snapping to the anchor point in the text, where you initially click the "text" cursor (the i-beam)? This would make it much easier to have the baseline for text line up -- i.e. at the moment (using the current CVS) text with letters that drop below the baseline (words like "happy") snap to the lowest point in the word (the bottom of the 'p' instead of the bottom of the 'h'). 2. Grouped objects can snap to any of the internal nodes when "snap points to grid" is enabled. But not when "snap to bounding box" is selected. What I really want (and what I think most users expect, and would most clearly emulate Illustrator's behavior -- but I could be wrong) is a "snap to the points in a group which form a convex hull around the object". Point #2 is important to me because I create lots of little EE symbols that are groups of off-grid objects, but inside of an on-grid object (think a register symbol, or anything with internal text that's smaller than the grid size). I know snapping may be a religious issue with some, and I know that someone else was working really hard on getting the snapping behavior "just right". I'm going to punt the rest of my real work for today and see if I can implement these changes in the current CVS -- what do people think, are these desired behaviors? Can anyone on Windows check the following bugs for me? 925033 win32: non-ascii filenames still don't work 934062 win32: international characters in home path 1052307 Saving fails because of UTF-8 Error In generall, the steps to check these are 1) run a version of Inkscape that is belived to have the bug 2) try to reproduce the bug 3) report if it was reproduceable or not 4) once the bug is being reproduced, update to a version of Inkscape that should have it fixed 5) try to reproduce the bug the same way as worked for step 2 6) report if it is still reproduceable. With that in mind, I mainly need to get people to verify the bug via steps 1 through 3. Getting them checked on Windows 95/98/ME and also on Windows NT/2K/XP is helpful, as they are very different bases. Thanks, Jon

cmyk-profile and pdf export

Hey Bulia, Mental, Bryce, Alan and all you other active inkscapers!* There's a feature request for cmyk and spot colors somewhere in the bug tracker. However, if you guys could spend some thoughts on how it might be implemented in inkscape that'd be cool. I'm using inkscape for semi professional work (doing work for ESTIEM, which is the European organisation of students of industrial engineering and management, as well as some stuff for our students government...** and usually need the stuff printed by professional printers who are asking for cmyk profiles. Now since the native format of svg just is rgb, I wonder (as I did in the bug tracker) if it is possible to define the colors used in the defs and add a cmyk equivalent in a inkscape tag. The user would manipulate the cmyk equivalent and inkscape would recaculate the rgb value... something like that. Then on ps eps or pdf (see below) export, the cmyk values would be embedded instead of the rgb values. Now concerning pdfs. I tried to import my svg flyer to scribus. That worked fine, really, exept that fonts weren't recognized, but the workaround is to convert them to curves. Now scribus 1.2 really screws up on resizing groups in a way that they exceed the page boundaries... causing me to start all over again a few times. Then -- as I was warned -- gradients with the end points of the object are not exported to pdf and the color output viewed with adobe acrobat afterwards seemed really poor for cmyk. This is why I'm very much hoping for smoothly working pdf output directly from inkscape. That would just be so cool, and for me a lot more important than many other things you can work around (oh well, baseline grid would really (!) help as well -- yes Corel doesn't have it, but that doesn't mean you don't need it :-) --, but other than that inkscape is already such a good app) Ok I know you're busy, but I needed to put this down, because I just talked to another ESTIEM designer about PR stuff and am wrapping up a document where I mention Inkscape (along with Corel and Freehand and Illustrator) as the program of choice for vector editing. Saying this, can I point to some gtk installation tutorial? I know there is a setup now for inkscape, but don't I also need the gtk stuff first? Anyways, take care! An important milestone has been reached: After the many recent and not-so-recent improvements to shapes (not only stars!) I hereby announce that the four shape tools and the corresponding shape types (rects, ellipses, stars, spirals) are, in my opinion, the first component of the program to reach maturity. In other words, Inkscape shapes are clearly ahead of the competition (and by competition, I don't mean Sodipodi) both in features and in usability, implement everything that I can possibly think of, and are virtually bugless. In still other words, they are ready for 1.0. With that in mind, I decided to document this component painstakingly and uncompromisingly. The new "Shapes" tutorial is larger than either Basic or Advanced; it contains detailed descriptions of shape tools and shape types, many creative tips for using them, and some rather beautiful examples. Not-yet mature things will likely either receive a very cursory treatment in the documentation (if absolutely necessary) or not be documented at all. I prefer to fix things first :) Correspondingly, the old shape-related sections are removed from the Advanced tutorial. I've just got a minor note everyone who might deal with character encodings (probably most of us) need to be aware of. We're basically dealing with three different string encodings (not just two). 1) The system/GTK+ encoding, which is UTF-8 2) The locale encoding 3) The filesystem encoding Now, though the latter two could often be set to the same, they do not have to be. I'm going through cleaning up some file operations, and in that it seems that there could be a few subtle bugs hiding here and there, depending on the understanding of encodings and differences. For the most part, we want strings we deal with to be UTF-8 as much as possible. When strings come in or go out through calls that might generate or need something other than UTF-8, we should translat at that point. So we end up needing UTF-8 for all but some filename IO stuff.

win32 build not working per instructions

Bob and others, I followed your instructions Bob on your website on how to compile on win32 using cmd.exe and mingw and everything seemed to be running smoothly, but at the end of the build this lovely-ness is spewed out. I think it has something to do with the zip package you provide with gtk etc. Here is the download I'm using from your site: gtk24-041012.zip I downloaded this mingw installer: MinGW-3.1.0-1.exe And, this version of make: mingw32-make-3.80.0-3.exe Might I also add that the make provided is named: mingw32-make.exe and not just make. This should be added to your howto. All the installers I used for mingw were automatic and I didn't build anything manually. I cvs up'd with the most recent as of 3 AM PST. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated, as I would like to help build some tests on WINDOWS. There are also some things which I think need to be cleaned up on the windows build, the actual icons themselves, etc. Also, I want to help Jon Cruz with testing something he asked me to test... Well... I've been tracking down a bug that's turned into touching several areas. Basically there are issues with non-ascii filenames. One way to correct this on windows is to play with _wfopen() instead of fopen(). I've tracked down about 14 occurances of the latter. I want to kill them!!! I'm currently planing on either using FileHandle or some other class to encapsulate file opening in a single place.

Hi, here is a translation and update of the 'mirror effect' tutorial published on the www.linuxgraphic.org web site, by J.-P. Bourgoy If you can take a look at it, I'll accept with great pleasure any correction/update/remark. I've updated it with the use of clones, added some exported bitmaps of some icons and inserted a few remarks. It is in HTML at the moment (edited with Nvu), and can be put on the Wiki. A4 is weird size

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe that DIN or ISO A4 just is 210.00 * 297.00 more correct (considering where Din comes from) I'm not sure where you take the 209.90*297.04 in document prefs from... when caculating A4 with the way it is derived (A0 = 1m², a/b = b/(2a) ) I get 210.22*297.30 That is [1/sqrt(sqrt(2)) / 4 * 1000] * [sqrt(sqrt(2)) / 4 * 1000] David

very slow loading of docs (win32)

I am notice that first time loading of documents containing text takes as much as 2+ minutes. This is the case even for very small docs (with one word) in them. I notice that the application is loading all the fonts and I have some huge unicode font files. Even after removing some of the bigger ones, it is still slow. Is this to do with pango/freetype? If so, any plans to move to newer version of pango/freetype? Thanks in advance Sudhan

OK Bulia, thanks for this. IMHO I feel this as not so flexible or coherent. Is there a way to challenge the spec, and have it updated in a future release, so that the clones become more flexible (up to the user to decide wether the geometry, move, stroke, fill (etc) must be linked with original or not). clone behavior

Hi all, I face a small issue while translating the tutorial from JP Bourgeoy (mirror effect), I'm facing a problem with the behavior of the clones. -> fill and stroke of the cloned object is locked and synchronized with the original object (while user can choose if geometric transformations are linked or not) the problem is i'd like to clone the original object, then fill it with black and move it to enhance relief/create a shadow. -> not possible I was wondering if it would be a good idea to let the user completely choose (in Inkscape prefs for example) the behavior and thus decide if fill and stroke must be linked or not. At the moment, there is a simple workaround : duplicate then group. Shall I submit a RFE ? Regards, Geraud

selection cue

A long time ago, when Carl proposed the box selection cue (every selected object is enframed by a dashed box), I did not want to make this the default because I found it to be too intrusive. However, since then I grew to like this more than the default selection cue (every selected object has a diamond mark in the top left corner) and I find that I use the box selcue all the time. It's not so intrusive once you get used to it, and it gives a much better idea of the object extent and is nice for aligning things. Also, previously the selcue was only displayed in selector, where the scale/rotation handles make the selcue box a bit redundant; now however the selcue is displayed in most other tools that have no other handles around the selection. Hence a question: would you agree or disagree if I make bbox selcue the default? In case you don't know how to change it: Preferences > Tools > Selector, change "Per-object selection cue" from "Mark" (current default) to "Box".

creating a pdf

Hi guys, I know that the standart way of creating a pdf with inkscape is using scribus. and I don't really mind. But I have a really old copy of scribus and before compiling a new one, I'd like to know, if by now it can handle transparencies and gradients for the import of svgs. I'll also ask the scribus list, of course :) David
