item opacity not drawn correctly

When you have an object, with pretty thick an outline and change it's opacity, in the item properties, you will notice, that not the opacity of the object is decreased, but the opacity of the stroke and the fill seperately. You notice this, because you see the fill behind the stroke. If you group some objects and change the opacity of the whole group, things work fine. Should I file a bug? David

redering of icons

Now this I don't get, there's a problem rendering the icons in the icon.svg, for use on the buttons. They are displayed correctly in the document itself, though. as it seems, there are gradients, that are messed up upon rendering for the display, or something like that. david

IMPORTANT: release tagging

NOTE: anyone who currently has a checked-out copy of RELEASE_0_38_0, the tags in your working copy are most likely hosed; please check out a fresh copy! Since we need to do a point release, I went to check out the 0.38 release branch, only to discover that there wasn't one -- and RELEASE_0_38_0 was a branch tag itself. That's a problem, because I can't just check out RELEASE_0_38_0, commit the point fixes, and tag RELEASE_0_38_1 -- it would have moved the head of the branch and the next person to check out RELEASE_0_38_0 would have gotten something other than our 0.38(.0) release... In future, PLEASE do this: RELEASE_0_X_BRANCH - a branch for the 0.X.Y releases RELEASE_0_X_Y - a regular tag for the That way, if we need to do a point release, we can just check out RELEASE_0_X_BRANCH, commit the fixes, and tag RELEASE_0_X_Y; no muss, no fuss. As noted at the top of the email I have moved and rebranched the existing 0.38 tag accordingly. RELEASE_0_38_0 is now a regular tag, and RELEASE_0_38_BRANCH is now the branch tag. -mental

Three notes

Hello there. A friend of mine was checking out Inkscape (hadn't checked since 0.37 -- he said it's great!), and he told me something interesting: Some dialogs appear on top of everything else, but some don't. The Fill&Stroke and the Text&Font dialogs stay on top when clicking the document window, but the SPRect properties (for instance) does not. I found out there is a new window in my window manager called "SPRect attributes" (or "SPRect atributos", which is not correct in Spanish), which might explain the dis/appearance. Later on, there is this "Append filename extension automatically" (which is great) (I never understood why some apps wouldn't do it by themselves), but the thing is that if the filename has already the .svg extension, it will add another .svg to the name. I've looked in some other GNOME applications and they don't seem to behave like this. Screenshot-13 shows this: http://cortijodelrio.net/~ddiaz/directo/inks/Screenshot-13.png (Look also what happens when you have a very long filename; GTK issue, I guess.) The last thing is about international scripts. When trying to write Arabic I found out it wouldn't show it properly: text was written from left to right and with no glyphs ligature at all. insensitive, xml editor

I've been bugged by this all day... Anyway, here we go. When turning an object to insensitive via the item properties menu, there's a line added in the xml: sodipodi:insensitive = "true" formally that was sodipodi:insensitive = "1" it seems, since I have a few objects I created with inkscape not long ago, that have that tag. Anyway, setting the value to either "false" or "0" in the xml editor doesn't do anything. Checking sensitive in the item properties dialog again, deletes the whole line. This can of course be done in the xml editor as well, but it's a wierd behaviour, that the value setting doesn't do anything. It also brings me to another point. When you select an attribute and press [del] the whole object is deleted. Rather than that the specific attribute should be deleted, I think. And when selecting a undeletable item, the "delete attribute" should be insensitive. What I also found to be very surprising, is, that I can select items within a insensitive group via ctrl+click, but am not able to select the insensitive item via shift+click or alt+click and then change it back to sensitive via the right-click menu, but as it seems to me have to use the xml editor to select it, and then either directly delete the insensitive attribute or use the item properties dialog to do so. As a professional DTP IT consultant and member of the Scribus team, as well as assisting the Inkscape team, I can assure you nothing GPL'd _except_ Scribus is capable of the features you are looking for. The PDF exporter in Scribus has been optimized over three years of development by the main coder, Franz Schmid. My testing with pro PDF pre-flighting tools shows Scribus PDF quality to match and sometimes exceed many proprietary DTP applications. We on the Scribus team really admire the excellent and rapidly improving SVG capabilties and user friendliness of Inkscape. The Inkscape devels are a good friendly, smart bunch to boot. That it is developed with GTK and Gnome libraries is a *very* minor point. One of our devels runs Gnome as his primary desktop. Inkscape is *very* popular with Scribus users, because it has quickly become IMO the best drawing/SVG tool on Linux. Both teams are sharing ideas and striving to make import/export between both programs work smoothly between the two - sometimes difficult given the complexity of the SVG specs. Oh, by the way Scribus has Gnome code if it makes you feel better. The rendering engine uses libart_lgpl. Peter

As I explained, that tool creates simple closed paths that have no idea of mid-path or widths array. They are just closed paths with black fill, you can only edit their edge nodes. As such, they're hard to edit after they're drawn and therefore almost useless. What I've been proposing is a more usable approach where you have a midline path and an array of widths, and the final closed path gets calculated from them and updated automatically when you edit the midline or widths. The current dyna-draw code may help in developing this algorithm, but by itself it's a dead end IMHO. It's not worth to develop it further in its current state. One other thing that dyna-draw does is implements some advanced realtime smoothing with "drag", "mass", etc. This applies to the algorithm for transforming your mouse movements into a path (which would become the midline path in the new tool). Some people in our team are already working on making the current freehand tool produce smoother lines, and probably the result of their efforts will be good enough for the new calligraphic tool as well, even without "mass" or "drag" stuff. stroke tips cut off

I just submitted bug 932254. When the angle of the corner of a shape is small enought, you notice, that the tip of the stroke is cut off. What is wierd about it, is that no matter how you rotate the object, the tip is always cut off vertical and horizontal. It seems like there was a bounding box for the object, outside of which the stroke is not drawn anymore. Have a look at the picture I submitted with the bug report. Take care David

view, hide dialogs

Well, most of you will agree that inkscape should move into a direction where dialogs get smaller and less important, and that rather the secondary toolbar should be used instead. But since that is a long way, I suspect, how about an option to view/hide all _active_ dialogs. There should be an item for this in the menubar>view menu and I'd suggest that ctrl-tab does the same. I know this behaviour from indesign, but it's not that useful there, because it hides your toolbar aswell, which kinda sucks, because it's hard to keep on working. Anyway, what do you think about it? spiral tool

I'm not sure, if it is a bug, but is sure looks wrong! Take a look at the attached png and you'll know, what I'm talking about. This happens with a low divergence and the inner radius set to 0. I don't understand why the spiral would wind in with an angle of almost a 90°. David

unable to select a tool

Not sure, what I did, and I haven't managed to reproduce that bug yet, but I opened the tips and tricks tutorial, went back to my document and was not able to select a tool anymore. I could select all the toolbuttons and have them all pressed at once, but there was no way to change the tool from caligraphic pen to anything else. also the dialogs would be behind my window. When I closed the tutorial, everything worked fine, but reopening it messed up things again. Restarting inkscape turned out to be a way to get rid of that problem. But as I said, I have not managed to reproduce it yet. David

Printing markers

Hi, My arrow head patch is working ok, but I now realise that markers don't currently print to PostScript. Any tips for how I should do this, before I blunder in on my own? I've got as far as needing to add stuff to sp_shape_print(), and needing to perform the correct transforms on the marker paths before printing them. Cheers Carl

i just installed todays cvs, so basically 0.38. good job! I'd have been testing it before the release, if I'd had the time to do so. Anyway, there's a few minor things I noticed. The stroke is not always properly displayed. When being dotted, you sometimes get dashes on one side of a rectangular. Moving or zooming helps to draw it correctly, though moving back or going back to the previous zoom-level changes it back to the wrong display. Thank you for adding multicolor gradients! But please consider redoing the way you chose the colors... add a few arrows to the gradient display at the top that can be selected and moved around. When selected one can chose the color for that stop. a new stop is created by double clicking a stop is removed by dragging it out toward the bottom of the gradient display. Basically what it's look like is like the value selectors. I think what I discribed is how gradient in corel work, but I'm not sure about it. Anyway, I was also wondering how an excentric gradient as the one on the screenshot on inkscape.org is created, couldn't yet figure that out. I'll keep on testing and complaining ;) But I can see inkscape leaving corel draw behind within 2004. Take care David

Hello there! I'm using the 4/04/2004 snapshot. For example, I have an image in the document. When I edit the image URL (say I set pic6.png instead of pic5.png), and then hit this "apply arrow" button, the image is not reloaded. Arrow heads work in progress

Hi, I've just uploaded my arrow heads patch, which is incomplete, to the sf.net tracker. At the moment it behaves like this: 1. Add an arrow head to a line. Nothing happens. 2. Add another arrow head to the same line. The first arrow head appears. My limits for trying to follow C++-in-C have been reached for today ;-) Any insights would be welcome. Cheers Carl

How to add <marker> objects to <def>

Hi, I'm having a hack at the code for arrow heads, but I've got myself properly confused. It seems that we have the SPItem class hierarchy (which contains SPMarker) and the repr tree, and that these are kept in sync with each other. So in which tree should I create my new marker object? AFAICS my alternatives are: 1. Do a sp_repr_new ("marker"), add it to the defs repr, set up the attributes using sp_repr_set_attr () etc. etc. 2. Create a SPMarker, and set up its struct with the required bits. So which should it be? And how to I propagate my changes from one tree to the other? I've just tried the first approach above and it works fine, except that the arrow heads only appear when you re-load the file. I think this is because a SPMarker is never created / initialised. Any enlightenment would be greatly appreciated. Carl

How to handle translation updates

Hi, What would be the best way to handle translation updates? I'm asking because I don't want to bug you with an updated translation each day until release, and also don't want to take up SourceForge storage space with those "daily" translations. Maybe we should create a patch and then replace the attached translation file whenever that file changes. Roadmapping for 0.39-0.50

Hi all, This weekend we're going to try to flesh out the roadmap for the next dozen releases or so. Not to cast anything in stone but simply to identify what we'll need to implement when, and to outline priorities. In the old roadmap we had identified 0.39 for implementing Extensions, however that presupposed we'd be further along in terms of identifying an internal API to hook them to, and having some conceptual/design documentation. Instead, we're thinking of pushing that forward, and let the focus of 0.39 be the incorporation of the AST and ECMA work, that has been going on in two branches. As well, we'll finally pull in GtkMM and start work on converting code to use that, including a layers dialog. We also need to determine the internal API for hooking extensions, etc. to, since that's a major dependency for Extensions. So in general 0.39 would be a much more development focused release, and we'll encourage deep work on internals that we've discouraged previously due to stability concerns. We will advertise 0.39 as more of an experimental release and encourage users needing a high level of stability to stick with 0.38. How does this approach sound? Bryce P.S. Jon, your share/examples/presentation takes 2Mb, and most of that is not even SVG. We discussed and decided that it does not really belong in the program distribution; this type of content is more for the web site. The examples directory is for demonstrating SVG/Inkscape techniques and uses. So I propose that we remove the presentation/ dir, and in the examples/ dir, leave one default-slide.svg as an example of a presentation slide in SVG. Instead, I just added a new gradient.svg that demoes the multi-stop and excentric gradients, and tiger.svgz which is sort of classic vector image, showing Inkscape speed and rendering quality (and also svgz support). Also, I added two new tricks to the Tips and Tricks tutorial and edited the rest to bring them up to date. Project Status Sunday, April 4, 2004 We've achieved the goal set forth for the 0.38 release. The ratio of open-to-closed bug reports has been reduced from 33% to our goal of 10%, representing over 160 bugs closed during the 0.38 development cycle. Of the total of 285 bugs registered against Inkscape since the project's inception, fewer than 30 remain. We're ready at this point to make the release, but want to do some final QA, doublecheck that the contributed translation work is incorporated, and see about getting a couple critical Windows bugs patched. Looking forward, we've greatly revised our roadmap, stretching it out as far as the 0.51 release. Note that our roadmap is a reflection of what developers anticipate needing/wanting to work on, rather than a cast-in-stone set of orders, and is expected to change as we learn more and as new developers with new interests get involved. For this next release, we'd previously identified Extensions as the focus, however we're not as far along in terms of design as we need to be, so instead have pushed that back a couple releases, and will be focusing on adopting first Pango in 0.39, then GtkMM in 0.40. The Pango adoption is expected to solve a wide number of rather deep bugs and fundamental limitations in the text system, while the GtkMM change has been long anticipated for helping us get the GUI code in better, more maintainable order. Pen tool UI modification

Hi, Should I post to the list when I submit a patch to the tracker? Or should discussion take place on the tracker? I'm not sure, so I'll post here about a patch I've just submitted. Currently, a right click while drawing a path with the pen opens the menu. This patch changes this behaviour so that a right click while creating a path aborts the current line segment and finishes the path. Justification for this behaviour: 1. AFAICS there is no way of aborting the current line segment, so if you single-click left when you meant to double-click you can't quickly undo your action. 2. There doesn't seem to be any use for the menu when you are actually in the process of drawing a line. Any thoughts welcome. Cheers Carl

Spanish translation

Hello all. Attached is the Spanish translation (for Mexico) of Inkscape. I'm pretty sure there are some strings missing, but I just don't know where to get them from. If anybody could point me to a webpage with translation resources, it would be great. Lucas, I changed a little bit the Ver menu. The Zoom Siguien_te and Zoom Ante_rior are now referenced with T & R (instead of T & T as for Siguien_te and An_terior). Therefore, Ventana ante_rior changes to Ventana anter_ior. I hope this makes sense and we don't have two different versions of shortcuts. Also, I changed the ALL_LINGUA value in configure.in for the autotools to grab this es_MX too. win crash?

So please test the latest build and report your results. Fred: I'm referring to the IntLigne::Copy crash which you fixed (at least for me). I'm not sure it's still the same crash, of course. John says node tool and freehand tool and bezier tool crash for him when Inkscape is run by itself, but never crash under gdb, so he can't get a backtrace. This suggests a timing issue somewhere. Also, his machine is faster (2100 mhz) than my windows machine, which may be why i don't get the crash and he does. Now investigating more: when I use your daily build040402 and replace the exe to that what I generate. The application crashes. when I am still in the build proccess and have that mingwenv.bat activ then its ok. Whithout this additional path-settings it doesn't work. (ie. start using explorer click) I have a German WinXP professional I am logged in as power-user. The icons.svg I mentioned was 1.13 from cvs. Version 1.5 is ok. Version 1.6 crashes. unified XML and layers dialog?

Once we've got this bug-fixing release out the door, I'm planning on putting more work into user-visible changes again. One of the ones that we've been slated for since the fork was a layers dialog. I've been thinking -- would it make sense to combine the layers and XML dialogs (maybe have them be on different tabs)? It seems to me that there's not much need to have them both displayed at once, so it might make sense to reduce the amount of screen real estate required by combining them. Obviously this would require that the XML dialog could be made smaller, though -- perhaps make the right hand side collapsable? What are your thoughts? -mental

Hi, Daniel Díaz and I (Lucas Vieites) are discussing the spanish translation and we are thinking about having separate translations for "Spain spanish" (es_ES) and "mexican spanish" (es_MX). Is this a mayor issue, or just uploading two files: "es_ES.po" and "es_MX.po" would solve it? I found this oddity while playing with inkscape tonight: Draw path AB and end it by pressing enter Press 'a' to add nodes Draw path from node B to new node C then back to B and press enter What you end up with is a path ABCA (triangle shape) instead of ABCB. You actually see the path jump from B to A when you finish it. This was from CVS checked out about 10:00 EST. Bryce and I were talking today, and I mentioned all the fun I had reading the "gettext" documentation on the various "special cases" that need attention when coding.
