Hi, I am helping organise the graphics stream of GUADEC 2004, which will also be the occasion for the GIMP developers conference 2004. You have all received the announcement calling for papers for the conference because you are prominent free or open source graphics software projects. I may have missed some projects. If so, please forward on the announcement to their devel lists. Many of you have some links with GNOME already, and others are working towards interoperability with all major desktops apps, including GNOME. I hope that we can see some people from each of these projects in Norway, and take the opportunity to make some headway on graphics application interoperability, which is an area which seems to be somewhat behind the rest of the desktop. Additional binary packages for Inkscape 0.36

A number of people have submitted packages of the 0.36 release for various platforms, including Fedora, RedHat9, SuSE, and more. Most are compiled for x86, but an Athelon-compiled Fedora rpm and a Sparc debian package is available. Please rebuild and *_TEST_* before committing. Even if it's just a matter of a few warnings showing up on the console, find out why and fix them before you commit, even if things _appear_ to work okay otherwise. If we don't get these things cleaned up at commit time, they will linger and accumulate to bite us later, when they will be much harder to fix. -mental

Feature Requests from SODI finally moved over to INKSCAPE

Feature Requests Captured - Please Review!!! December 22, 2003 - The various Feature Requests collected from different developers, the WIKI, chatting with other users, and old RFE's from the SodiPodi days have been moved to the Inkscape RFE tracker on Sourceforge. Please review these feature requests, make comments, prioritize them, and post your proposals to the WIKI page NewFeatureProposals. I added this to the website. I wanted to get this task done before our Xmas hiatus. I will be back after xmas sometime. Hopefully everyone can look over the RFE's posted and get inspired. The next phase I will attend to is to get people to look at the RFE's and then post New Feature Proposals to the WIKI. I found these functions for converting between absolute and relative pathnames: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gtk-devel-list/2002-April/msg00142.html They were apparently proposed for glib but not accepted. I copied g_rel2abs() into document.cpp and used it for calculating the absolute pathname. It seems to work well for paths with any number of "." or "..", and the list of recent files now contains absolute pathnames (this fixes https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=860202&group_id=9…). Please test. Nathan, recently I added a few small functions to nodepath.cpp that I needed for various path operations. They do things like finding the point closest to a given point on a given line (the line is assumed to go through the coordinate center and thus is given only by its tangent), distance from point to line, as well as converting from x/y coordinates to radial and back. I realize that these functions probably belong in a different file, and maybe even in your point class (or maybe they are already implemented somewhere, although I could not find them). However I do not know much of C++ and thus cannot move them there by myself. Coding conventions

Greetings, So, what sort of coding conventions do people want to adopt? I'm not really a C++ coder so I wont offer up too many suggestions, but I do intend on doing what I can to 'help' developers follow the decided upon conventions by creating Emacs and Vim modelines for the source files...unless someone has a good argument against doing that. At any rate, the only thing that I think is important is 'no tabs'...anyone care to suggest/discuss/argue-without-starting-a-war other conventions (this would include filename schemes for C++ as mentioned in the booleans thread)? *g* -Tom

Why do you think you better understand the needs of artists than, for example, creators of Macromedia Freehand (among others) which has the spiral tool??? >Does anyone use the spiral shape for anything? So for me, the Inkscape's spiral tool is one of its very real advantages over Xara. I even mentioned it as such just a couple days ago to my wife, when she asked what was that new drawing tool I'm spending my time with recently! Even all that aside, how do you feel killing a feature which has almost 1000 lines of code, is well thought out, complete and convenient? There's simply no limitations to the kinds of spirals it can create - don't you appreciate that? Yes it has a bug, but show me a tool which has none! Were you seriously planning to add to the release notes, for example, "Answering many requests from impatient users, we finally managed to remove one the biggest Sodipodi's annoyances, the spiral tool?" Come on! If I type in some SVG in your test program and drag it into inkscape, no object appears on the canvas, but there is a new empty <g> in the XML editor. I decided after compiling it, that I should make a real rpm available to other SuSE 9.0 users. I have created a RPM for SuSE 9.0 and passed it along to the Inkspace developers to include on their download site. The src.rpm is there also, so other linux distro users might be able to alter the spec file enough to use on their systems. SuSE is now putting all their Gnome programs in /opt/gnome, in an effort to more closely adhere to the LSB. I don't think Gnome is located in the same location for other distros. Anyway, give it a look and see if you don't like the changes as much as I did. It still gives you all the Sodipodi features, plus a few more and expect many more after the new year! As part of the C++-ification, we need to introduce namespaces. In addition, we wish to reorganize the codebase to suit our longer term architectural plans, such as conversion to Cairo, Pango, and Gtkmm, introduction of our API and modular extension system, and provision to the community of an SVG Canvas. Here is a proposal for a new architecture that incorporates these elements. It also shows how to map from the current architecture. This is presented as a proposal to spark discussion, and will be updated with any feedback you provide. Please ask questions of anything that is unclear. Once we have a rough concensus on it, we will formalize it and can proceed with the work. SVG::DOM - This is a Document Object Model for SVG documents. It is the key dependency for SVG::Canvas, and thus is also something Inkscape provides externally to the Open Source community. Internally, it is implemented as a C++ class hierarchy, but externally can be linked to using either C or C++ style linkage. The externally presented API would be standard DOM. Cairo - Switching to Cairo will occur late in the rearchitecturing process. We need to ensure Cairo provides the capabilities already present in libnr. Completing other areas of rearchitecting will help get the codebase organized for conversion of it to Cairo, without taking undue risk in adopting a different underlying renderer. saving views

There's a sodipodi:namedview element in each SVG file saved, but it's empty. Is it right to assume that it was supposed to store the contents of the SPNamedView object of the document's desktop? If so, why it's empty - not implemented yet, or disabled? I propose to enable/implement it, and additionally, to extend SPNamedView with these fields: - zoom level and visible part of the canvas - window width/height and maximized status so that these settings could also be restored when the document is opened. Besides, the window size of the last closed document is saved into preferences, so the new empty document created next time will use them. (I'm so tired of the 400x400 default window!) Also, what about storing the absolute file name in SPDocument, as I proposed some time ago? Hrm, I like the new double arrows, but having one white, one black is a little distracting. Often, dragging from one end of the slider to the other, the top one starts to disappear, and I have to switch to focusing on the (now barely visible) bottom one instead. I liked the "karaoke" arrows (black with a white outline) much better -- could we try double karaoke arrows? -mental

Note, I find it much safer and consistent to export "plain" SVG from Inkscape or Sodiopodi. Which distro and which fonts? This has largely been fixed in Scribus 1.1.1 with a new font discovery mechanism. At the moment, for getting really high quality PDF from SVG, SVG > Scribus > PDF can't be beat. Franz has put a ton of work into making the PDF exporter really robust and correct to the PDF specs. I test Scribus PDF's almost daily using professional PDF pre-flight tools, as well as a new Fiery RIP. Generally, I find if it RIPS, most printers should have no problems with Scribus PDF's. Right now, there is really nothing in open source which can generate the kind of 'press-ready" PDF like Scribus. Ghostscript 8.1+ has many improvements in pdfwrite, but its still in progress. Mind you the SVG importer is quite new code, but it is quite functional and usable. There are also detailed notes on http://scribus.net in the documentation. Hi guys, I have a clean MinGW build working. It would be good for someone to check that out. I had to make use of sp_document_partial_items_in_box() for this, which was in the code but never used, and fixed a bug in it so it could actually work. While at it, I changed the behavior of shift-rubberband. Previously it toggled the selected status of all objects it affected, now it always adds to selection. Rationale: the semantics of rubberband ("include everything within this box") and toggle ("deselect what was selected and vice versa") do not mix, imho. Especially given simple rubberband (without shift) always selects objects, regardless of their past status. Shift-click, however, still toggles selection status, so you can select many objects with (shift-)rubberband and then deselect individual ones with shift-clicks. Comments? And the main change which was the reason to dig into this code at all: now if Shift is pressed before you start dragging, you always get rubberband, even if you start from an object. I admit I stole this from Xara, but it's VERY convenient. Without it, if you had a big background object in your drawing, you simply could not use rubberband because you always ended up dragging the background. With our discussions being so lively :) perhaps something gets lost. A couple of my recent questions were not answered, so I'm not reposting them in the hope that they reach knowledgeable people who might have missed them the first time. 1. Regarding this bug: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=860202&group_id=93… does anyone else think that document.cpp must store the absolute path already, i.e. instead of document->uri = g_strdup (uri); in sp_document_create we should have something like document->uri = abs_path (uri, base); That would fix the above bug. If so what standard function is there for creating an absolute path? I could not find one in glib. 2. I want to enable ctrl-click to select within group, but I don't see how it can be done. Color selector changes

I've just put in a change to all the color selector files to switch them to C++. Things seem to be working better now due to centralizing code and event cleanup. I'm working through the entered bugs, but keep an eye out if anything seems strange, or has compile problems.

To make it easier for people unfamiliar with building GTK+ apps on Win32, I uploaded a zip file with everything needed (current dependencies) to link with Inkscape on Win32: http://troi.lincom-asg.com/~rjamison/files/gtk2.zip It would be nice, however, if a kindly committer would add the extra codepage source files needed for the build to src/libnrtype. These are not touched at all by the Linux/Unix build, so they will not break anything. However, (IMHO) they really should be in the source tree. There are only about 12 .c files: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/sodipodi/sodipodi-codepages-1.0.zip?down… BUT, with the change to C++, they need to be changed, too. Here are the same files, but tweaked for C++: http://troi.lincom-asg.com/~rjamison/files/nrtype-codepages.zip I have a set of diffs and Makefiles for building Inkscape with MinGW. I have Borland and MSC++ , but I really like this compiler for a few reasons: 1) Anyone can download it and use. This will help grow the developer base. 2) It is relatively small. It does not consume all of your disk space. 3) It is somewhat of a worst-case scenario. The fact that it resides in a Gnu-less environment, coupled with the fact that it is a bit stricter than the same GCC on Unix, makes it a good test of the robustness and portability of code. I tried the latest CVS, and it's better in that there is no exponential growth of weird node clusters, and I could apply outset many times in a row, with acceptable results. However, now it distorts shapes more - not by growing clusters but by changing straight lines to curves and rounding some of the sharp corners more than others. But I think that this approach is still much better, it just needs to be less agressive so as to better preserve the shape. One problem: now both inset and outset commands do outset :) As for not using the stroke width for the in/outset distance (bug 860660), I thought that instead of using an absolute value, it's more natural to use a percentage of the object's dimension. For example, 5% of the min(height, width). xml:space problem

With the recent introduction of xml:space support, there's one problem. It is set on text but its effect is on the children tspans. However, since the text element is itself affected by it, when you save and open a file with such a text object, the newline between <text> and its first <tspan> is preserved: it becomes an empty text node in XML editor and is visible as an empty line on the canvas, shifting the text lines down. What is the best way to fix this? I added statusbar flash to sp_file_save_document saying "Document saved." However I see no way to find out whether the save was actually successful - of course this needs to be displayed only on success. But sp_module_system_save returns nothing useful. Is this by design? In fact it does have a return with value, even though it is declared as void. While at it, I added a check of sodipodi:modified so that unchanged document is not saved. I wonder why this was not done before - are there any pending problems with sodipodi:modified? Judging from the quantity of downloads, we're serving a userbase on the order of 1500 people. There are new functions for statusbar display. Please use them where appropriate to make statusbar helpful and informative: void sp_view_set_statusf (SPView *view, const gchar *format, ...); Sets statusbar message permanently. The format string and the rest of arguments are as in printf(). Not to be used normally, because the message never disappears unless replaced by another message. In the majority of situations, one of the _flash or _error functions should be used instead. void sp_view_clear_status (SPView *view); Clears statusbar message permanently. Not to be used normally. In the majority of situations, one of the _flash or _error functions should be used instead. void sp_view_set_statusf_flash (SPView *view, const gchar *format, ...); Displays message temporarily for 1 second; when the message disappears, the one that was in the statusbar before it is restored. Use this function for short helpful hints or explanations of non-trivial actions. Examples: "No-break space" when you press ctrl-space in text object; "Closing path" when hitting the anchor in freehand; "Selection cancelled" when pressing Esc cancelled rubberband selection. void sp_view_set_statusf_error (SPView *view, const gchar *format, ...); Displays message temporarily for 5 seconds; when the message disappears, the one that was in the statusbar before it is restored. This is where you start to get into problems. Breaking things arbitrarily is very bad and will frustrate users, *unless* they can clearly determine the heuristic and predict its results. Additionally, any behaviour that is inconsistent from use to use is terrible from a usability perspective. It may be better to break the oldest created relationship, but if this is not immediately obvious to the user (as the cause of the breakage) then this is just as bad as the current situation. `Least recently moved' suffers a similar problem in that different constraints get broken depending on the order of previous actions. This is also bad because the user is probably likely to think in terms of tasks they are completing and may use two different orders of steps to complete the task without realising themselves, each time leading to a different constraint breakage. Also, what if the diagram has just been opened, how is the decision made then? Perhaps you should be thinking about not breaking the guideline constraint, i.e. have the control point do nothing by instead breaking the mouse constraint. I notice this is what happens if the center and left-middle points are each attached to a seperate vertical guideline and you try and drag the right-top control point. Though there ought to be some feedback to the user here explaining why the control point doesn't have any effect (in one direction) when dragged. I'm not sure there is a `perfect' solution to this question. This works for me on one level--I like the way they look when connected. I don't like the way they lose the look of control points. After manipulating them further it is clear they are still control points, though when it first occurs you feel like you've lost the `handle.' My feel is it is a little unnatural to click on and manipulate the `railway tracks' when wanting to break a control point from a guideline. I also don't quite understand how this is going to work in Inkscape itself either. As Bulia pointed out, the control points in Inkscape are away from the edges of shapes. Also, I notice when a selection contains multiple shapes then these control points represent the edges of the bounding box of the selection. It doesn't make sense for these control points to be attached to guidelines. It needs to somehow be shown that the control point of the shape sharing that edge of the bounding box has become attached. Given this behaviour, you may need to have a seperate second tool to deal with objects themselves rather than the bounding box of the selection. In any case, I suggest there also needs to be some discussion about how exactly these tools will fit into general Inkscape editing. I know that you were looking mainly for critism of the model rather than implementation details, but such things may need to be considered by your model. Cheers, Michael

It's really getting in our way :) Now there are two more problems. Take the bug-textinset again and: - set its outline to 1 pt, press ctrl-) three times. It grows OK, but on fourth and subsequent outsets, nothing happens - it stops to grow. - now remove the stroke - you'll notice areas where the shape bacame really weird, e.g. under the top left serif of "w". - now reload the file and repeat, this time with a 0.5 pt stroke. Now it stops after 4 applications of outset, and there are less broken areas (but the "r" is still somewhat broken). So: why does it stop growing, and can you do anything about the broken contours? some questions/suggestions

Hi, just checked out version 0.36 - great job! Still, there are 2 issues that have always bugged me in sodipodi and still bug me in inkscape. If some one can suggest a workaround, I'd be glad to hear it. If not, maybe i should file this as wishlist items in bug tracker... 1. Is there an easy way of creating a closed Bezier curve? Of course, one can create an open one and then connect endpoints, but it is a long process... 2. When copying an object, the copied object is put at exactly the same position as the original. Am I the only one who finds it inconvenient? I frequently need to have several copies of the same object in different places my drawings, and selecting one of the two objects which are literally on top of each other is awkward, especially if the objects are small. I'd much prefer that "paste" creates a floating object, which follows mouse cursor, and you click to show where to put it. What do the usability experts say about such an idea? Best, Sasha PS. absolute path

Regarding this bug: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=860202&group_id=93… does anyone else think that document.cpp must store the absolute path already, i.e. instead of document->uri = g_strdup (uri); in sp_document_create we should have something like document->uri = abs_path (uri, base); That would fix the above bug. If so what standard function is there for creating an absolute path? In freehand and bezier tools, just press 'a'. It will then display anchors at both ends of the curve being created, and by drawing to these anchors you will close the curve. Actually you CAN move a pasted or duplicated object with arrow keys, because it's selected. Press ctrl-d and then arrows, it's very convenient imho.
