BUG: Newer inkscape series crashes computer in heavy documents.

Hello, I'm currently working on a heavy .SVG document about almost 91 layers containing linked .PNG files in high resolution (300 dpi). While previous series (0.91) saved successfully individual layers as single .PDF-per-layer the latest 1.1 stands working when exporting pages and then crashes the whole computer after 20-30 seconds. Is not posible to kill the process manually by console. Just want to notify devels about this particular issue. Thank you, Xadaux

GDI BUS Issues - constantly Crashing Inkscape.

Since V1.0 When opening ANY Non exported, Non embedded, Non Related image file with ANY other "GRAPHICS/RASTER" app causes inkscape to crash with a GDI BUS error if INSKSCAPE (NOT RESPONDING) is active in memory. Getting sick of it. For crying out loud - even attaching image to email crashes inkscape. I'm running Win 8.1 (yes, I know). I have tried assigning admin perms to Inkscape and gdibus.exe, to no avail. Here's what I think, you are lockcing the gdi bus memory, ASSUMING THAT ANY CALL TO THE GDI IS FOR YOU, THEN YOU RECEIVE A NULL RESPONSE AND YOU HAVE ZERO ERROR HANDLING. Not every gdi bus call is for inkscape. Fix this. Seriously, I have lost so much stuff because of this - it corrupts text areas and gradients and I am getting sick of it. Hello, I believe you’re experiencing two different issues, actually: * Crash on Win8 / Win8.1 when opening an image in another image viewing / editing program. See https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inbox/-/issues/5249. This is already fixed upstream so you can simply use the latest stable bugfix bundle: https://inkscape.org/release/inkscape-1.1.x/?latest=1. * Memory leaks when having the Document Properties Dock open. See https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inbox/-/issues/5667, https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inbox/-/issues/5363. That’s already fixed for 1.2, current workaround is to leave it closed. Luca

Inkscape is participating in Outreachy!

Dear Developers, Inkscape is confirmed to be participating in Outreachy Dec-2021, the principle mentors are Kavya and Adam.Belis, but if you have a project you think would be good for an intern to work on, please do become a mentor or co-mentor too. The projects don't have to be development (unlike GSoC) so if you've been sitting on a documentation project and haven't had time to get to it, now is the time to do some mentoring and make Inkscape even better. Commitment is a couple of hours a week during the intern period. You can go to https://www.outreachy.org/communities/cfp/inkscape/ Scroll down to the bottom to the green "Submit a Project Proposal" button and fill out the forms. The outreachy coordinators (myself, Tav and Marc) will review all the project proposals and confirm them and then they'll be open to potential interns to select from. = Schedule = Oct. 1, 2021 - Contribution period begins Oct. 31, 2021 - Contribution period ends Nov - Lots of administration happens. Inkscape Matrix Space

Hello, There is a new beta feature the Matrix folks are working on, and after being pinged about it by jabiertxof I setup Inkscape to use it. It basically allows grouping of the Inkscape rooms to get a UX that is closer to Slack/Discord/etc. Feature description: https://element.io/blog/spaces-the-next-frontier/ Generally, since it is a beta feature, I don't want to put it on the webpage/social media/etc yet. But it would be useful if folks who have Matrix accounts and are willing to enable the beta feature could test it out. Inkscape Office Hours: Summary

Hi everyone in the Inkscape Contributor Community, thank you very much to those who had joined us for the first 'Inkscape Office Hours' meeting on July 16th! We had a great time getting to know each other and tossing some ideas around. You all can find the meeting log at https://inkscape.org/paste/28194/ During the meeting, we've all been working on a document together, where we've been collecting ideas for two of the major questions of the Inkscape Board to the community: https://pad.chaotikum.org/p/Inkscape_Office_Hours_1 For those who were not able to attend the live meeting, I will keep the pad open for another week, so you also have a chance to add your ideas there. Please mark your own ideas with the name you go by in the community, and also add a short suggestion about how you could help with making them reality! When the week has passed, I'll package the results up for handing them over to the Inkscape Board, so they can have a look at the feasibility, and we can continue from there. There's no established process for this yet, so we'll just have to try and see where we can get. There's no date set for the next Inkscape Office Hours meeting yet. Regular Meeting

Dear all, As discussed at the last video meeting, the committee/board did a poll to decide if we wanted to continue doing regular video meetings. There was a unanimous vote to continue (except for ted who had to leave before this discussion) and I was asked to put together the details. Generally people favoured a non-weekend date, any date so long as it had enough notice. This is the new calendar entry, it's set to the second Thursday each month, at 16:00 UTC https://inkscape.org/cals/event/30/ I've also created a room on big blue button. The aim will be to record each of the meetings and I can post the recording to the right places (probably here on the mailing list). The general agenda is to come together to talk about what we need to do next for the project. We'll still post all votes to the mailing list, so anyone who misses the meeting won't be left out. inkscape-1.1: exit during startup, problem loading svgs

Hi! I've tried updating the pkgsrc package from 1.0.2 (working fine) to 1.1. It builds and installs fine, but during startup complains about svg files and exits, without display a window. (org.inkscape.Inkscape:66): Gtk-WARNING **: 10:54:36.278: Could not load image 'resources/template_about.svg': Couldn’t recognize the image file format for file “/usr/pkg/share/inkscape/ui/resources/template_about.svg” (and many more like these, then ending with) Gtk:ERROR:gtkiconhelper.c:494:ensure_surface_for_gicon: assertion failed (error == NULL): Failed to load /usr/pkg/share/inkscape/icons/hicolor/scalable/actions/image-missing.svg: Unrecognized image file format (gdk-pixbuf-error-quark, 3) Bail out! Gtk:ERROR:gtkiconhelper.c:494:ensure_surface_for_gicon: assertion failed (error == NULL): Failed to load /usr/pkg/share/inkscape/icons/hicolor/scalable/actions/image-missing.svg: Unrecognized image file format (gdk-pixbuf-error-quark, 3) gdk-pixbuf has SVG support, I tested this with: gdk-pixbuf-thumbnailer /usr/pkg/share/inkscape/icons/hicolor/scalable/actions/image-missing.svg image-missing.png which successfully creates a png file. Now I'm not quite sure where else to look for the root of the problem. Issue with Inkscape 1.1 snap and REALHOME / getent

Hello, I recently had a machine running Ubuntu auto-update its snap to version 1.1. In this version, there seems to be a new mechanism to determine the default config path using getent that is not functional on my system. Some particularities that I have: 1) passwd / groups of users come from a Samba AD using sssd 2) home directories are mounted on NFS The problem that I see is that the REALHOME variable is not set correctly, so it tries to look for the configuration in /.config/inkscape. This is what I see when launching: ==== $ LANGUAGE=en_CA:en inkscape /bin/bash: /home/doug/.bashrc: Permission denied /bin/bash: /home/doug/.bashrc: Permission denied /bin/bash: /home/doug/.bashrc: Permission denied Unable to init server: Could not connect: Connection refused ** Message: 08:43:39.229: Cannot create profile directory /.config/inkscape. ** Message: 08:43:39.229: Inkscape will run with default settings, and new settings will not be saved. ** (inkscape:3501254): WARNING **: 08:43:39.395: Could not create directory '/.config/inkscape' ** (inkscape:3501254): WARNING **: 08:43:39.396: Could not create extension error log file '/.config/inkscape/extension-errors.log' ** (inkscape:3501254): WARNING **: 08:43:39.476: Fonts dir '/.config/inkscape/fonts' does not exist and will be ignored. ==== So, the first thing I tried is to add the following in the snap's apparmor profile: #include <abstractions/nameservice> #include <abstractions/bash> And this got rid of the bashrc access errors (which likely aren't fatal, anyway), and I could get a proper result with this: aa-exec -p snap.inkscape.inkscape getent passwd $UID So, I thought this would work. However, it still doesn't... With careful use of ctrl-Z and attaching strace (since it seems you can't strace directly), I was able to see that the /etc/nsswitch.conf being used by inkscape is coming from inside a chroot or otherwise remapped by snap, and it does not use the system /etc/nsswitch.conf. It looks exactly like this issue: https://forum.snapcraft.io/t/no-sssd-support-in-snaps-nsswitch-conf/10412/12 It seems like the only way around this problem is to use NSCD as a proxy, which is generally not recommended, it seems, but might be the only choice I would have. (Using unscd does seem to work, even with 0 cache ttls -- so I think this should be safe) All this to say -- would it be possible to have a fallback in the environment to use the old behaviour (was it to use $HOME as REALHOME?) in case the calls to getent fail? Or, at the least, it should be documented that using nscd/unscd is required when a different nsswitch.conf configuration is used. Thanks, -- Douglas Paul

Developer Team Budget

Dear Developer team, Thank you to everyone who made the developer meeting today; we talked a lot about what the budget should look like from the developer team. I have comprised the ideas here which I will be bringing to the next board meeting to be held on June 4th 2021 ( https://inkscape.org/cals/event/2/) Current items to be requested immediately: * The Developer team requests a General Administrator who can take care of many of the organisational tasks which we currently struggle to. This is deemed more important than any funding for specific features. I'd like to invite everyone to join me for a meeting to flesh out what this would look like, we'll use previous work as a base and work from there. Please come to BigBlueButton next Sunday 30th May at 17:00UTC (https://inkscape.org/cals/event/25/) to make sure our proposal is detailed enough. * We would like to budget $5k on macOS speed problems; this is to be spent on analysis first, and then solutions second. The whole developer team recognises how dire the situation is with René specifically saying that without a fix we should not release for macOS in the future. Future budget requests which we do not have a consensus for, or details are missing: * CMYK support; Tav would like this, developers feel it's not important enough. A user study would be useful to know for sure. * PathFinder; Taking over, or working with the Linux foundation for their Rust based pathfinder is a great way to bring GPU rendering to Inkscape. Marc is to contact the linux foundation and Linkmauve about collaboration or taking over the project. * ARM Machine for René; If we continue to develop macOS, René will need one of the newer ARM based macOS machine which would be set up to do CI builds. Improving the ability to check and build testing builds for macOS. This is a budgeting request from the Developer Team to alleviate a lot of the stress from running the project and better organise. New dependency for Inkscape 1.2: python3-cssselect

Dear all, Over the past week, I've implemented CSS support in the extensions repository. This means that if an extension asks what color an object is, it will get the correct answer regardless of where the style is defined, if it is overwritten or !important or defined by a shorthand somewhere in the cascade. It also introduces default values for common attributes as well a new functionality to get a parsed value (e.g. the reference to a gradient object instead of a string with its id) or to set an attribute to a parsed value. This feature has been merged this morning and will be released with *Inkscape 1.2*. Check out the branch here: https://gitlab.com/inkscape/extensions/-/merge_requests/294 In order to avoid writing a CSS3 parser, I had to introduce a new dependency for parsing, computation of a style's specificity and the conversion of a selector to xpath. This is handled by the python package https://github.com/scrapy/cssselect. I've already opened MRs to add this dependency to deb, snap, appimage and windows packaging (https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/-/merge_requests/3239, https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/-/merge_requests/3238). If you are responsible for packaging Inkscape in some way, please have a look if I did this correctly or missed a packaging type (MacOS is still missing, for example). I'm currently still working on looking through the commit history and merge requests. Please browse the linked page to check for any major features that you have contributed to. If you find the current description lacking detail, or if the big (or even small) thing that you've been working on is missing entirely, please let us know in https://chat.inkscape.org/channel/documentation You can help tremendously with documenting your changes through good commit messages that include how your change affects the users' experience and that include full links to related bug reports. Version tagging when closing a bug report and linking back to the original MR/Bug report in cherrypicks is also super helpful in knowing which version(s) a change ended up in (i.e. currently the main question is: is it in 1.0.2, too, or is it only in 1.1 + master). I've also seen some very good merge request descriptions (with before - after pictures), and found them to be very helpful - thanks to everyone who helped their reviewers and the users understand what they've been up to with the code in this way! The improvements are: - The symbols are loaded from the dialog itself, not form a background process. making it asynchronous will make the start time (if the dialog is opened before the last exit) or the runtime response (if the dialog is opened for the first time while the program is running) faster. - To be able to open, edit and save the symbols from the dialog. If the symbols are loaded from a read-only folder, or if the user intends to save as a new copy, the user can save the edited symbols as new ones. By edit, I mean to edit the svg itself or edit the tags and other properties of the symbols. - To be able to load/save symbols from/to a folder. Any opinions or changes that can be done? Is it good enough for a proposal?

Discussing an initial idea for GSoC (inspired by vim's registers).?‏

Hi, my name is Osama Ahmad and I'm planning to join GSoC this year. As stated here <https://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php?title=SOC_Writing_Project_Proposals>, it's encouraged to discuss ideas for GSoC before submitting. Inspired by vim's registers, I'm thinking of adding the ability to make multiple copies. But, unlike vim's registers which have a fixed name and are limited to several registers, I'm thinking of allowing the users to assign a name for each copy and be able to create as many as wanted. There will be an option under the "copy" option which will have a name like "add to copy list", and will have a text box for the users to enter the name of the copy. Later, when they want to paste a certain copy, they click on an option which has a name like "paste from copy list", when clicking on it, a list of the names of the previously made copies will appear and the user can choose from them. This will not modify the original "copy" and "paste" options. The program will have its normal copy and paste options, but will have the named copies as an additional option. To make things even more convenient, there can be a counter that starts from 1, if the user just wants to copy multiple objects without assigning names each time, they can just click on the third option which will have a name like "add to copy list as #x" where x is the current value of the counter. The counter is increased by 1 each time this option is clicked. I'm not planning to decrease it at all since it's very unlikely for users to make more than a 100 or even 10 copies anyways. Also, there will be an "X" button beside each item in the copy list to enable users to remove items they're not in need anymore from the list. Optionally, since there will be an option that says "add to copy list as #x", if the users have used it a lot, thus have a lot of items which all have a names of numbers, the users might forget what each item corresponds to, so, a solution will be to show (but not actually paste) the items when the user hovers over them. Probably this will complicate things, I'm not sure if I'll be able to do it. But in case I've finished the main project before the deadline, I think this will be a good addition. Problems: - It might slow the program if the user has copied a lot of items. Yet, we don't force the user to copy, if the user is in need of lots of copies, then being able to do it and have the program to be a little slower is way better than not being able to do it at all, so, I think this is not a big issue. If the idea is a good one to submit, where in the code should I start to read and grasp first (probably a good starting point would be where the copying and pasting functions are located)? And, if the idea is not good enough, I'd love to know why and how I can improve it. Thanks.

Hi Max, I thought I'd add some input instead of staying silent (Thanks for cc'ing the Bug Wranglers in Patrick!). As I understand it, now that we know bugs can still be accessible, the main objection is to keep the bug migration game going (and the effort spent to make sure it's done right). It looks like the workaround with the teams will work smoothly, without adding much of a barrier to the bug migration game. Just to make sure, would anyone still be able to update existing issues? (e.g. status changed, comments added, receive notifications for these) If the existing issues aren't modifiable, I would prefer to keep launchpad as is till the bug migration game is over though (perhaps we should consider when it should be closed if we can't migrate them all over. If existing issues are modifiable, don't have any objections from my end. I do notice that there is a steady trickle of bug reports that are consistently opened; closing the page does seem helpful even while the bug migration is going on since we are wasting time dealing with these reports anyway. Old bug tracker / bug migration

Hi all, every once in a while, people still report bugs on the old bug tracker on launchpad.net. Currently, the bug tracker was left open so that we can still read old bugs and move them over to GitLab. With some help from Launchpad.net support <https://answers.launchpad.net/launchpad/+question/695519> I figured out that we can disable bug submission there without losing access to the old bugs: https://launchpad.net/inkscape/+configure-bugtracker -> Setting: Bugs are tracked: "somewhere else". I tried that temporarily for a few seconds, and it seems to work: Then, the main links "Bugs" and "Report a bug" on Launchpad disappear. However, one can still search for bugs using the direct link to the "advanced search": https://bugs.launchpad.net/~inkscape.bugs/+bugs?advanced=1 Links to old bugs still work, e.g.: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/682585 Maybe in the future we could import the old bugs to a separate GitLab project, so that one can find all bugs (inbox, real bugs, old launchpad bugs) using the single URL https://gitlab.com/groups/inkscape/-/issues . And/or mass-close the largest part of the old bugs, at least those that are not confirmed/triaged and have not been updated for many years. Looking forward to hear your thoughts. Hi everyone, the Inkscape project is going to host a virtual booth/stand at the Chemnitzer Linuxtage, on March 13 and 14 this year! We have already gathered a small booth team of 4, possibly 5, but the CLT (Chemnitzer Linuxtage) are all-day events and we could use your help answering user questions about how to work with the program, how to contribute to it and about what is going on in the Inkscape community. We might even do some short, up to 20min topic-focused sessions, if someone would like to organize (one of) them. So, if you're a developer, a forum member, a regular user support provider in our chat channels, an Inkscape translator, or are contributing to the project more or less regularly in any other way, and you have some time available to spend helping the Inkscape project on that weekend in March, please introduce yourself at the GitLab issue report where we're discussing the event organization! We would also be glad to have someone on board from any of the maker labs or similar communities, who are proficient in helping with maker topics, or who can demo something interesting in a short session (or both :) ). An idea I brought up in today's developer meeting: Developer presentations to share knowledge, experience, and to promote best practices. Schedule: Either as part of the weekly developer meetings, or as a separate event. E.g. once a month. Ideas for topics: * Warnings and Assertions best practices * std::move and other modern C++ features * How does Inkscape's garbage collection work? * How to properly use signals (libsigc++) * Why is direct manipulation of the XML tree discouraged? * What is a node observer? https://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Community_Development#Developer_Pr… I'd be willing to prepare some of these topics and to host the event. So I started following the instructions for compiling inkscape on Windows and ran into some issues. I did figure out how to fix/get past the issues but felt like the wiki could contain the information. openswatchbook hijacked

Hi, when saving svg in inkscape 1.0.1, the file contains a link to openswatchbook dot org and that website appears to have been hijacked and is serving porn and possibly malware. I'm new to inkscape so I was curious what that address is about and why it's in the generated svg file. If you could explain why a svg file needs url links in the first place I would love to know. I don't know what relationship inkscape has with that website but you should contact whoever you think is the original owner and let them know of the situation. Best regards

finally, finished using boolean operators

finally, i finished off by trimming the lhsf eyebrow to the face using boolean operations. I couldn't seem to get them to work how I wanted, to trim the eyebrow bit. And selection order didn't seem to change the precedence in the boolean operation. In the end I ended up doing a copy and paste replacing the face, then a copy of the eyebrow with no paste, then the boolean operation between the eyebrow and one face copy, then paste from the eyebrow copy the style (opacity/blur didn't seem to copy, just the colour, not sure it stroke styles copied or not), then deleted the original eyebrow. And renamed everything correctly again using the XML editor. I noticed you can't do a multiple select in the XML editor, only select a single element. So, I think I'll raise three bugs from this, boolean operation precedence, style paste not pasting blur and transparency and maybe stroke styles etc.. and inability to select multiple shapes/groups via the XML editor dialogue. I'll leave the snapping as an enhancement to look into and not raise as a bug as the enhancement I suggested may be best as a different snap modulator.

path snap

As I mentioned in my last email, I found snap to path, but it didn't work that great. It seemed to fit curve to a curve well some of the time and didn't seem to snap vertices to the path curve. What would be great is if it could snap a curve to a curve all of the time by inserting vertices as needed to make the snap happen. I'm also going to play around with grow and shrink, to see if that's a better option for multilayer hair, that just adjusting the paths manually. There would still be some alignment of paths between objects with higher/lower z-orders needed and it still wouldn't solve the eyebrow problem. I may end up just doing a boolean operation.

I found path snap and it worked okish, though not that great. An example of where matching two paths is required because you can't just use z-order and have a blob underneath is the eyebrow, where I have a semi transparent top layer for the hair and an opaque background that has to be beneath or fit the face and above or fit the eyebrow. https://imgur.com/4oHHL6Z

simple edge detection of a bitmap

I can't remember exactly how to do an edge detection mask for a bitmap but it's something like 0 -1 0 -1 0 -1 0 -1 0 as a matrix applied to the bitmap, this has issues with jpeg compression though as you get square artefacts from the lossy-ness of the compression, soi it may be an idea to detect the compression window for the jpeg image and use that to scale the matrix. I believe jpeg compression is more or less just an inverse fast Fourier transform.

I'm not sure how well relying on using z-order to account for matching detail of the edges of paths would work if we wanted to animate the shapes. e.g. make the dress and hair move as if the wind was blowing.. Incidentally, this svg renders funny in chrome, I've added some blurred, semi-transparent detail on a higher z-order than the base image but it's not showing... Something slightly more advanced would be being able to take the pattern from the traced portion of an underlying image. So lets say I trace a sofa and I want to take the pattern from the material of the sofa and use it to fill my vector shape. Even more advanced is that the possibility to extract the shading from an underlying image and turn it into fill gradients may become possible once a uniform texture is extracted from the material.

I've just been hand tracing a jpg image someone asked me to turn into a drawing. Here are my notes on the process: When moving points they need to be able to snap to points on the curve of lines of other shapes, maybe controlled by being in the same group. Smoothing worked quite well, it would be nice if there were some option to do it to the contours of an image either, Fitting when smoothing, Snapping curves to to an underlying image when editing a curve over an image, could be controlled by layers and opacity etc.. Another feature that would be nice is to snap one part of a path to another part of a path, breaking segments where necessasasary. So say you have two hand drawn paths, where some segments of one are close to or partly overlap the some of the segments of the other path. An option to fit the two segment sets of the path that are close to each other would be nice. I expect I can prototype some of this.

Does anyone know OTT how filling is performed? Is it just the standard, sort the vertices and walk the inside edges down either side of the vertex a line at a time? I can probably tell by making some shapes that don't fill in a uniform manner when you do that and see who inkscape fills them. I've got a good collection of path segment functions together now for prototyping, and found the first SVG feature implemented on the GPU, or at least in OpenCL, filters. So, that's a positive. I'll think I'll keep on working on the extension before doing any experimentation but I think I've to go a good outline of things to test to see how they fair in terms of rendering performance and enough SVG features down that I should be able to do a bit more than just a point line test. I looked up Bézier length calculations again, and they are basically an approximation using lookup tables. Wikipedia said you could calculate them definitely using a partial integral when I looked a while back but it seems it was incorrect and I'm back where I started in high school calculating the sum of the magnitude of the segments.

When I do a bucket fill I store the result as a collection of lines going from one inside edge to the other than enumerate the list to redraw the lines. Something like gimp would typically trace the extremities to produce a selection outline and fill a bit mask in the same way as I would bucket fill. To create a selection. I don't think a GPU would handle the outline trace at-all well, but most fill patterns and styles are quite possible using shaders, or tilled textures. (I just did a search and came across an OpenCL implementation of filters) https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=70099 I don't know what licence the code uses but it's a good example of what's achievable. Oh, I see now, there's fill rule evenodd and fill rule nonzero, so i was almost right.. That's a lot of experimentation, hopeful we should be able to identify what SVG elements or parts of elements can be calculated or rendered at high performance and which ones require a more traditional approach. Even then performance could possibly be improved manually vectorizing if GCC doesn't for a good job. (I expect you have to structure your code in a way that's friendly to GCC's algorithms) and switching to scaled integers over floats which are higher performance and give you more control over the (I've forgotten the word), basically the number of bits you've got to play with to maintain a desired rounding error. Integers having higher performance is certainly the case for older generation CPUs where that bit of performance may be really noticeable to the end user who may not have an acceleration viable GPU.

It looks like as I described, sorting the vertices and walking the inside edges. Except overlapping boundaries seem to follow a z-order based on the order in which the vertex appears on the path. So, it's basically a bucket fill with some level of z-order based on vertex creation order.

A full 32bit 4k screen is 31mb There are approximately 70 full 4k screens in 2GB, which is about the memory of an ancient PC or graphics card. My PC performs unbuffered memory writes at 10GB/s according to a benchmark I just ran, and read performance is over 13GB/s That means my PC can write the full 2GB in 1/5 of a second and my PC is currently under a lot of load, I have loads of stuff open. More details including GPU to CPU and CPU to GPU memory performance can be found here: http://www.bealto.com/gpu-benchmarks_mem.html The devices listed are relatively old, a PCI Express V2 16 BUS is listed with a performance of 8GB/s It would take 1/25 of a second to transfer the full 2GB at theoretical maximum performance. That means you could sustain a transfer rate of 201MB at a speed of 40 frames per second, or about 6 and a half full 4k screens or 25 full-HD screens 40 times a second. A modern PCI Express bus can sustain 126 GB/s Having a vector with 32bit x and y coordinates for every pixel of a 4k screen shouldn't pose a performance issue. Old PCI Express 2 systems can achieve that at 120 fps. Masks and stencils won't be the whole screen and even if they were older systems without 4k screens (you need a modern graphics card to be able to operate one) could have roughly 350 full-HD screen stencils before filling up 2GB of RAM. So, the memory requirement of using masks and stencils and then texturing and filtering on the GPU shouldn't be an issue. Well, that's all the theory out of the way, and it certainly seems viable. Just to see if any of it works in practice.

Creating masks for filling may be slow, but it could just initially be done for clipped areas and then background areas can be calculated during user idle time, so they can be cashed so that they don't have to be recalculated if something on a layer above them changes.

worst-case scenario is that i have to load everything into bitmaps and do the calculations using shaders using the colour of the bit map for the coefficient values. That's basically what OpenCL does in the background for you, but it should work on machines that don't support OpenCL assuming they can operate on enough bitmaps at once to provide the number of coefficients needed.

What I'll do for feasibility is create some arrays for triangular strips for every pixel of the screen, perform the basic spline calculations on them combined with normal calculations so the triangular strip has a width in the direction of the normal of either side and see what the performance is like. I have quite a new PC with a fast GPU, my older PC will have a different performance profile I expect.

it does if it's architectured right, see for instance how the Pathfinder library does it it doesn't if it needs back-and-forth stuff with cpu and gpu involved (anyway, 2am, going to bed) oliverthered 1:37 AM ok, I'll run a test soon of calculating all the line points an entire SVG file in one go to see how that performs. but you're correct, unless there's some way you can work with the line points when rendering an image on the GPU you have to shuttle the calculations between the GPU and CPU to do the drawing. that then leaves the question of how often do you actually have to recalculate all the drawing points. you could calculate the drawing points as a triangular strip maybe. Then it's just one trip to the GPU and back to calculate them and then you change the data type into vertices and send them off to the GPU again to be rendered. you should then be able to manipulate the line directly on the GPU you just can't break it or delete it without having to go from GPU to CPU again. Filling is a lot harder on any kind of scale. Here's one example of SVG filling on the GPU: http://matthieu.besson.pagesperso-orange.fr/2010.01.15/SVG Rendering using OpenGL.html matthieu.besson.pagesperso-orange.fr SVG Rendering using OpenGL line drawing is however fixed filling not dynamic filling, you know the width you don't have to do bounds checking for the fill boundary. and it's still possible to do that on the CPU as a mask and then have the GPU render the fill texture and style etc.. an array of drawing points need be no bigger than a few full screen 32bit depth textures to fill the whole screen with lines. If you can create an array of triangles at point separation using the tangents of the spline you should then be able to use a shader to do all the stroke drawing, feeding it the array of triangles you've calculated. anyhow, i'll have to do some benchmarking, but in theory at least everything apart from creating a mask for filling can be handled by the GPU. So to do all of that you need to know the length of the lines so you can precalculate the size of the array needed to hold the triangular stipes at one pixel spacing..

So, long as you don't need to increase or change the number of elements in the vectors, basically no memory allocation, it looks like bulk vector operations are easy with OpenCL... here's an example where a vector id added: https://github.com/rsnemmen/OpenCL-examples/tree/master/sum_array But there's a wide variety of other possible functions... I'll have to port the path rendering into OpenCL code and see how well it performs when I give it a vector containing all the path data in an entire SVG file in one go. That should at least performance benchmark it and provide a proof of concept.

Also the canvas operations like Rotate, Zoom and Pan should be considerably faster." I think it should be possible to do way better than that assuming the bus isn't too much of a bottleneck because you have to pull any points that are calculated back on to the CPU so that they can be drawn on the canvas and send out to the GPU again for layering.

I got told off for this monologue, so I hope it's a good one... I didn't manage to draw a conclusion but I did come up with a way of testing if the vector drawing calculations can be offloaded to the GPU which would in theory make them blazingly fast. It would also be of interest to other open-source graphics projects, so I may get Intouch with the Krita guys https://krita.org/en/download/krita-desktop/ as I know they have some GPU optimizations and see what mileage they got out of it. At the very least SIMD on the CPU is capable of performing those four multiplications required for a spline in one cycle, it's just a case of what performance gains can be made rendering the other embroilment beyond basic line drawing. --------------------------- I've got my Béziers down to this... a * p[0] + b * p[2] + c * p[4] + d * p[6] etc.. The points are fixed for the segments and a,b,c,d are a function of the fraction t. that should vectorize nicely and do all four mul operations in one cycle. The number of fractions in t is really dependent on the length of the curve.. Which makes the performance bottleneck populating the arrays to do the vectorized calculations. It's always possible to have arrays with prefill numbers of fractional steps. That would prevent the over head of the CPU having to go out of catch to fetch data in an informally populated memory block... but just having a pre-allocated array to stick all the fractions in should overcome that. So, the only question remaining, assuming fractioned aren't precalculated. is what is the performance difference between populating a preallocated array of fractions and then doing one massive vector operation on the lot in batch, vs calculating the fractions on the fly and just doing a little vector operation. It should be possible to hold all the calculations of the fractions in the loop inside the registers, which should make on the fly faster than populating a vector as there're no worries about the CPU having to fetch data from odd places. I think it's only 32bit precision, that just means quadrupling up the data and scaling the fractional component into nice 32bit chunks. a standard loop would be quicker than calculating all the points in bulk into memory, but that's assuming you only want to draw a pixel line with no other operations performed upon it. if you have all the points of the line calculated and held in memory on the GPU you can then perform a load of other operations upon them in bulk like anti-aliasing. It is a shame the GPU can't just take the values stored in what is effectively a texture used for bulk parallel processing and turn them into pixel co-ordinates to draw on another texture or it would be possible to calculate and draw all the vector points on the GPU. If you calculate many lines all simultaneously on the GPU the overhead of transferring memory over the bus should be well mitigated against. ``` Anyhow, that was some interesting research. When i get around to taking a look at Inkscape code I should be able to frame some idea of just how much of the vector drawing operations can be calculated in bulk on the GPU. Certainly, all the operations requiring tangents and normals should be achievable given an array of line fractions and the spline control points. SVG drawing is complex so there's a lot of overhead in the actual drawing process compared to line drawing so holding an array of points to be drawn in memory may actually make performance sense.

It's a bit marketing bumph laddered after I got some work and sponsorship based on the design work I posted to Inkscape's mailing list. The project in which my design was spotted was inkscape for which I not only designed the feature google was extremely interested in but reworked undo/redo and scripting to support macros, real time ECMA scripting as well as their current batch python scripting and additionally added the versatility to support older plugins that are currently unusable without being ported to Inkscape new python scripting API, although I also schemed a proposal for automated porting. On-top of ECMA scripting I designed a modular and secure API system that is extensible and reusable by other 'open source' projects. This enables the development of real-time drawing tool and utilities (such as real-time shape recognition, recording of macros based on user interaction, click-and lock user interface integration during design (the UI becomes integrated with the application API via wisywig script instead of hard-coding), SVG Animation using CSS, SIML (deprecated) or JavaScript, and finally interactive SVG for development of graphic rich web applications and games (think sopped up flash replacement). A radical, high performance, caching system was also designed, high-performance matrix operations for groups of a vector and bitmap objects, such as rotation, scaling, shearing and translation, along with implementing some industry standards that were missing such as deciles black boxed from Google Chrome. Graphics fidelity was also addressed and fidelity/performance trade-offs discussed with some key design pointers such as moving objects require less fidelity and feature scaling should be uniform possibly even dropping the current non-uniform scaling as even an optional feature. Backtracing methods for 'random' animation JavaScript/CSS allowing for wisywig editing and the ability to control and pre-empt the animation timeline were also worked into the project, this also enables high-performance animation through the ability to pre-empt caching and transformations. Another feature where I deltered and improved with existing API and radically extended the AI to enable clean matching of both straight and curved segments, more or less regardless of the angle that they are drawn with, though fixed angle snapping was implemented by default to make for easier drafting)

back in the USSR

or rather the UK, I left my flat keys in turkey and can't get into my flat and my mum and grandfather were moving house when I got back and we've only just had the internet hooked up. it's running at a measly 1.5mb so I'm going to have to wait until I get a new keyfob from the landlord and can get back into my flat before I can continue with more serious work. They take a week or so to get a new keyfob for some reason so I'll ask them if they have a code for an emergency box on the door so I can get in sooner and don't have so much hassle if I lose my keyfob again. They will probably tell me to bugger off so I expect to see you all again in a week or so's time when I have fiber and we can catch up properly. My mum is almost moved now so hopefully i'll have some time to relax and get on with some reading, Turkey was busy all the time and I got quite a lot done over there and even learnt a little turkish. I had a chance to look at acrobat when I was over there and appart from the kind of clicking and locking you get in cad packages it didn't really seem anything special, it was quick however.

Disabling testing... I'm going to keep hacking at this, but would love any advice and/or to discuss the PR in the meantime. -- Early Ehlinger

Dependency : boost-filesystem

Hi all, Since we switched to C++17, there has been an attempt to use std::filesystem to simplify some of our file handling code. However, some compilers we still want to support for now (like gcc8 or some macos clang versions) do not have it in by default or need a special flag. Hence we decided at the last dev meeting (reminder, next dev meeting is saturday, and we have a board meeting tomorrow (friday)) to use boost-filesystem, which has exactly the same API, in the meantime (so that when we switch, it will "just" be a matter of removing the dep, a few lines in CMakeLists and change the #include). On some systems boost includes everything (and we already use some of boost) so you'll be fine, and on ubuntu-like systems you might need to apt install libboost-filesystem-dev If you have questions for a particular system, feel free to voice them, and if you are willing to use std::filesystem and want to maintain a patch to avoid adding a dep in the meantime, you'll basically want to locally revert 6880148747deb6d7ec4e73068b9e196bb11a0f0c Good evening, -- Marc

Help adding support for dxf arc on dxf_outlines.py

So I'm thinking if it would be possible to use something like simplepath (but now it's decrepted) and convert the path into segments and then the segments to curve as they go into the process_shape loop and separating the arcs that fulfill the conditions(same radius) from the others that should be converted to curves and then to dxf spline. It would go like this: path -> transform matrix -> simplepath -> separate the arcs from the others (M L C etc) -> arcs goes to arc_info and the others goes to either dxf line or dxf spline as opposed to what it is now path -> superpath -> transform matrix -> separed lines from curves to go to dxf line and dxf spline respectively So my questions are : How to convert the path to some sort of superpath but without converting it curves? Does a command to do this exist or should I write a function to do it? And if I should write one, what's the format of a superpath so it could match with my function? What was the issues of having the transform matrix before converting it to a superpath? It is possible to do it the way i intend? Any help would be appreciated

There was some discussion on dev-chat about using SVG for rendering rotation handles and performance and bitmaps came up in discussion. This should provide a thinking point for talking about canvas performance at Fridays meeting. That led me onto some investigation into Inkscapes canvas performance when rendering bitmaps and vectors and how chrome handles it. This is about the only benefit of running on an old laptop. Anyhow, the notes cover the whole file and subfile (z-order sandwich) caching for all possible dynamic transforms of objects (that is excluding node, filter, style modification etc...) which should dramatically improve the performance of inkscape in anything to do with dynamic transformation where perfect fidelity isn't so critical because it's blurred to the eye. It's also very practical on the GPU which has enough fast memory and image filtering technologies to offer good support and high fidelity with no noticeable artifacts in the rendering. oliverthered 9:48 PM I just had a bit of a look at image drawing performance and there is lag when I'm dragging the image. That means the image position is being updated with intermediary points when the mouse has long left that point. scrolling the view point doesn't seem to have these issues, the performance is still slower than my web browser. That may be because the browser renders to over-view-size bitmaps, or a composite of bitmaps and caches them, so all scrolling involves is translating the cached bitmap. oliverthered 10:00 PM vector performance doesn't seem too bad, it's still not great though. does it use intermediary bitmaps with an alpha channel that are cached so that translating and scaling etc.. operations operate with optimum performance? in a similar way to how true type font rendering works in most applications, except with layers. so say when you select something the objects with z-orders above and below the selection are cached to bitmaps as layers so they don't have to be rendered for every update. obviously you get a sandwich effect if the selected objects aren't in a z-order group. oliverthered 11:16 PM me running out of memory/swapping or whatever causes chrome to show it's caching system for rendering and it uses square tiles (deciles) when rendering this svg file. with square tiles it's easy to clip the vectors so you can minimize redraw because in addition they over size the view. oliverthered 11:45 PM looking at inkscape, when the canvas size is larger than the view area +-42? inkscape resorts to redrawing the portions of the svg file that are out of view when they come back into view. where as chrome uses deciles so that at most the content of the squares are redrawn if they move back into view and are no longer in cache and at least the squares cache the content once it's been drawn once (in an over sized view that is square by square proportioned) it's cached and doesn't have to be drawn again for translation exercises. with decent filtering square caching can also be used for scale, rotate and skew with the svg file only being needed to be redrawn when it's enlarged beyond the cache size. There's a possibility that this may produce some unwelcome artifacts in studio production though so it may only be workable during dynamic operations with the svg file having to be redrawn once the dynamic (and so blurred by the eye) operation is complete to give production quality fidelity again. oliverthered 11:50 PM so all dynamic transforms of svg objects can use bitmap caching deciles as mentioned about along with the sandwich caching I mentioned earlier when a fraction of the svg file is modified, nodes, transform, properties, filters etc... This should work very well on the GPU too as it's ideal for this kind of compositing. That should cover animated transforms and path movement (esp in CSS) and with clipping changes to styles and filters and possibly node movement. It should be possible to parse this information out of the file so caching can be optimized with advanced knowledge and not have to be done with "on the fly" optimization for the various fragments which would get messy.
