Top level menus in Inkscape: File, Edit, View, Layer, Object, Path, Text, Effects, Help. Top level menus in Adobe Illustrator 10: File, Edit, Object, Type, Select, Filter, Effect, View, Window, Help. Text seems like nearly a better choice than Type (Illustrator came out of Adobes type business and Photoshop came later). Might want to consider changing Effects to Effect which fits in better with the usual naming conventions of top level menus. I should have noticed it before, I will file a request for this minor tweak. The effects menu is already full of functionality and I would be tempted to put in submenus soon and provide struture for plugin developers to work to but I might be getting ahead of myself here. (If I recally correctly the Filter menu is essentially the Photoshop filters embedded for use inside Illustrator.) Inkscape doesn't currently have Select menu. Illustrator, Photoshop, Fireworks, the GNU Image Manipulation program, Fireworks all have it. (There are probably some intersting counter examples of applications that dont have it but I'll leave that to someone else). I think in the long term a Select menu is a good idea but initially it may look a little odd with only 4 or 5 items so maybe I should rush to change it just yet. The windows menu... There was a mailing list post earlier in the week which I read (with some difficulty). I've asked the GIMP developers to change their consider changing their Dialogs menu to a Windows menu (there is a little more to it than mere relabelling but not a whole lot). Getting rid of the dialogs menu forced a big User Interface shake up, reintroducing a very similar Windows menu to Inkscape might be counterproductive in the short term. Those were the relatively easy things I've been pondering. The Object and Path menus are a little more difficult. I think they should probably be merged, Paths are essentially Objects. Some functionality such as "Inset" would be great if they worked on all objects, not just paths which is not a superficial change. Based on the Inset tool in Freehand a popup dialog with more flexible options might be appropriate. Some items will need to be moved submenus (probably the various Arrange and Transform options first) to allow this but it is more complicated than that. So that is what I'm thinking so far and I realise some of it might not be immediately practical but with a bit more time I think out a bit more coherent of a plan. Hopefully developers can identify some parts of inkscape they think may need to be expanded or consilidated so there is room for the interface to grow without becoming overwhelming. Too much caffeine, better go home and go for run if I'm ever going to get to sleep. (Which means I wont be responding to this message until tommorow.) My Menus.xml

These are my personnel adjustments to the menus. The main philosophy behind the adjustments is if menu item already has "face time" in the UI then its ok to bury the Item in a clearly labeled submenu. Not all of the adjusts fall in to this category. Some just felt right. Others didn't seem to really belong in the menu they were in. All menus are now under 15 items, except the Effects menu which I renamed to Scripts Joshua Blocher verbalshadow

0.42.1 and Ubuntu Feature Freeze

Hey All, As some of you already know, I am trying to get 0.42 in the next version of Ubuntu, due in October. Inkscape is a supported program, and thus there are strict dates for uploading, one of which we have already passed. Now, the Feature Freeze is rapidly approaching (Aug 11). and I hear of crashers in 0.42. I already know that several of you already use and promote Ubuntu. It would truly suck if 0.42.1 missed Breezy. Corey

I'm aware of the gcc issues but I thought it was mentioned that .42 was available in Debian unstable but I dont' see it there (latest 0.41-5). Any word? If it's not going to be there for a while, what is the best alternative, autopackage ?

Bulia, I tested just yesterday with Win98 +latest libs and German umlauts in the filename. So I can confirm the non ASCII-filename-crash - the dialog shows the file-name with some cryptic characters (this might be UTF8 for the special character) - opening this chrashes Inkscape - I have not found the place where I can put the filename in a inputline - the very latest gdb 6.3 needs an other lib which only exists under WinNT+above. Implementaion of Division Command

What's the reasoning behind Inkscape's implementation of Division as opposed to having two overlapping shapes resulting in three pieces, including the exclusion area of the top (stacking order) shape in addition to the exclusion area of the bottom object and intersection? Hi guys, I just wanted to congratulate the entire Inkscape team on the 0.42 release. I tried the final version and it works really well - in fact I've been using it at work to do some of the graphics for a commercial product we're working on. You guys have one of the best managed and most approachable open source projects around, and you should be proud of that. I'd also like to thank you all for bearing with us as maintainership of the Inkscape autopackage transitioned away from me to Aaron. It's a young technology but judging by the number of people using the Inkscape package, it seems to be working OK. You can see how many people are installing an autopackage for the first time by looking at the runtime download statistics. Notice how much higher todays figure is already than yesterdays (which was the first full day of counting) - and it's only 10:30am! That's the impact of your release: http://autopackage.org/stats.php I'm at work at the moment (so can only play with the Windows build) and have no net access where I'm currently staying, but I'll see if I can take home the autopackage on my mp3 player and test it on my laptop. Put your menu where your mouth is

Okay, So, for a little project I made all the menus configurable by a file in your home directory ~/.inkscape/menus.xml. They use the verb ids, and you can pretty much move things around how ever you'd like. There are still some rough edges, but it should be stable enough to have people start passing around files of how they'd like the menus for discussion. Then people can try them out. Fedora dropping libstdc++.so.5 so quickly and with such blatant disregard for binary compatibility caught us off-guard. Possible bug in 0.42

Hi, I did a fresh install of the 0.42 autopackage from http://www.inkscape.modevia.com/ap/inkscape-0.42.x86.package on my Mandriva 2005 LE. I found the following strange behaviour: - I create a new drawing with a circle. - Duplicate the circle and resize it (the width of the stroke resizes also) - Now if I select the second circle and try to set the stroke width to 1 pt by clicking on the up and down arrows of the width field in the Fill and stroke dialog it only increases the width both clicking the up or down arrow. What about aborting rendering if it takes too much time?

There are some cases when it takes really long to render the screen area (e.g a wire frame with many lines and viewing the whole page).. Is there any way to abort inkscape? It would be nice to switch to another "quality" of rendering if updating of the screen takes longer than x seconds. Because in some cases you don't know when inkscape will finish and undoing/deleting one step might last a time beeing equally long the only way to get rid of such a situation would be killing inkscape.. It should be no problem to switch back if you like.. What do you think?

PDF Import?

I'm new to inkscape; I just ran across it this week. (apt-get it after reading the vector graphic's story). It's really impressive! I spent some time trying to import a PDF. This is a long standing PTA problem that usually has me importing it into the gimp as a tiff. I tried digging farther with my renewed energy and found only dead ends for PDF -> SVG converters. There are some, but they are all proprietary. There is even some site that lets you put your pdf into it and they will mail you a SVG (didn't work for my pdf anyway.) I eventually tried pstoedit: pstoedit -f plot.svg myfile.pdf myfile.svg inkscape myfile.svg Which got close, but lost all the text. What is the current state of PDF or postscript import? Are there some other tricks/tools anyone might recommend? Thanks, Jeff

Inkscape percentage units

Hello, Is it possible to pass percentage units for x, y, width and height attributes in the xml svg file. Example of what I would like to do: <svg x="10" y="10" width="250" height="250"> <rect width="100%" height="100%" /> </svg> This would mean that we get a rectangle with width=250 and height=250. the problem is it looks like the inkscape viewer can't work with %. Any solution? languages in install

Based on feedback so far, we really need the option to NOT install the language files when installing on Windows, so that Inkscape would only use English. I think this should be a pretty simple patch to the nsis installer file, to ask "Do you want to use English interface, or the language of your Windows system (if Inkscape has a translation for that language)". Newbie to Developer Process under Windows

Hi List, I'm just starting up with the project and want to run under XP. I have been advised that VC++, which I would have preferred, is too difficult to get going. So I started with the 'Compiling Inkscape for the Win32 Platform' document and cannot unpack a downloaded copy of gtk26 with 7-zip. I get the error 'this is not a supported archive' with both gtk copies on the website using either of the 2 available versions of 7-zip. Downloading with IE produces different size files from using Firefox so I'm guessing it's a download problem. Can anyone point me to an alternative source of the gtk26 library, perhaps in a normal zip format? TIA Douglas Neale

Inkscape undo system

Can anyone point me to some code that would serve as a nice illustration of how the Inkscape undo system works? I've been reading the Session and SimpleSession classes and the way they are used in the functions in document-undo.cpp; is that a good place to begin, or are there better starting points? In particular, I'm wondering what the best way to clear the undo and redo stacks is, as it's crucial to the correct functioning of Inkboard. When a user synchronizes his or her document with another user or with a chatroom, that synchronized state must become the new original state of the user's document. sp_document_clear_undo and sp_document_clear_redo, from their code, seem to be what I want, but I can't quite figure out how to use them to attain the desired effect. -- David

I can't tell, I only have net access at work (Windows). But a good way to check would be to run "nm inkscape | grep g_option". Hi. xfig like export combined LaTeX postscript/ transparency ps export

Xfig has got one possibility to set a special flag on text which means that this text doesn't get exported on combined LaTeX ps but is written to the LaTeX file which means that you're able to also use LaTeX possibilies of typsetting mathematics and so on. Do you think it would be much effort to add this to inkscape, too? Because I *really* prefer inkscape over xfig :) inkscape could became the tool of choice making figures for LaTeX.. xfig is nice but lacks some functionality. The other thing is when exporting to ps inkscape currently just ignores transparency.. All you would have to do having two rectangles ------ -- : rect1 without ++ ---+++||| ++ : overlapping area ---+++||| || : rect2 without ++ |||||| rect2 is above rect1 would be splitting this rectangles into 3 and calculate the color of the + rectangle depending on the transparency of rect2 and color of rect1.. Then all 3 reactangles can be exported as it's done right now. And because the function Stroke to path is already provided (although I'm not sure how well it works using some advanced stroke style) it shouldn't be that hard to implement. What do you think? Marc

The Inkscape 0.42 release garnered a huge amount of interest, and are stats are reflecting it. We rose to the 3rd most active project of the week on SourceForge today. For downloads we reached 16th, for webpage views we were 10th, for project pages we got 21st, and for tracker activity we hit 4th. Counting all hits to *.sourceforge.net we hit 6th, which was up 68 ranks since yesterday. I have a suspicion we may be going up even a bit further over the next couple days. :-) There were a number of serious bugs found post-release, especially in the packaging, so a 0.42.1 patch release will be produced hopefully some time this week, as soon as resolutions to all the issues are found. Hi all, I've committed Inkboard to Inkscape CVS. This consists of the Inkboard code (in src/jabber_whiteboard), C/Gtk+ dialogs (in src/dialogs), some conversions of those dialogs to C++/Gtkmm (in ui/dialog), and modifications to some existing files. To enable Inkboard, pass the --enable-inkboard switch to the configure script. You will need libloudmouth <http://loudmouth.imendio.org> and Boost <http://www.boost.org>. I have tested Inkboard with libloudmouth v0.17.2 and v0.90, although ~v0.13 should also work. (Let me know if it really does.) I have developed this code with Boost v.1.31.0. Inkboard no longer relies on Boost smart pointers as I stated in my mailing list response to Bryce re: Summer of Code updates; I have switched all smart pointer-reliant code over to code managed by the garbage collector. However, it still uses Boost.Bind, Boost.Function, and Boost's lexical_cast. The reliance on Boost.Bind can probably be scrapped as soon as I do the work to convert the involved function objects to be used by the C++ standard library's argument-binding facilities. I think this is all the code necessary to compile Inkboard. There may be another commit coming if I forgot something, which happens more often than I'd like. If something doesn't work, please let me know. Inkboard usage ========= The "Whiteboard" toplevel menu should be present. If it isn't, try removing your menus.xml file in your Inkscape preferences directory and try again -- this will force the file to be regenerated from the built-in menu skeleton. Or, you can copy the necessary XML from src/menus-skeleton.h. You must first connect to a Jabber server; this is done by selecting Whiteboard -> Connect to server... After that, you may choose to engage in a user-to-user sharing session or a chatroom sharing session. The "Dump XML tracker" menu item is intended only for debugging; it probably should not make it into a release. Known issues ======== 1) Chatrooms must be specially created for them to work with Inkboard. Here are the conditions: A) The chatroom must broadcast the message INKBOARD-JOINED (case-sensitive) when a Jabber user enters it. This is necessary because mu-conference v0.6 doesn't seem to follow JEP-0045 with regards to the order of broadcasting presence messages. (See <http://www.jabber.org/jeps/jep-0045.html#enter-pres>.) Hopefully, this won't be a problem in the future. In the meantime, this special behavior is easy to set up with e.g. gaim. B) If regular Jabber users are present in an Inkboard chatroom before any Inkscape client joins, there will be synchronization problems, since the current Inkboard chatroom code implements the following logic: non-empty room => request synchronization. empty room => become "master". This can be worked around -- to an extent -- by checking the resource tags associated with each JID in the chatroom, since Inkboard has its own resource tag (specifically, "Inkboard"). Malicious users can, of course, defeat this, so maybe it's not the best way. We'll see. 2) Although Inkboard identifies itself as speaking the Jabber MUC protocol (which I do intend to make it do) it currently actually only acts on the "groupchat 1.0" subset of messages. 3) The bug in Ted's menus code affects Inkboard in any code path that may cause a new document window to appear. In particular, these are the cases I think are associated with said bug, based on backtraces: A) The "accept invitation in new document" option presented when a user is given the choice to accept or decline a user-to-user whiteboard session causes a crash. B) Establishing a new Inkboard session in a new document after an Inkboard session has already been established causes a crash. 4) Session files are disabled for now. They work, but only for documents that involve no references to automatically-named internal elements, which makes them a little useless. (For example, gradient/pattern fills aren't recorded correctly just yet.) If you'd like to use them, though, all the code is there. To enable them, you can (1) uncomment lines 183-184 in src/menus-skeleton.h, remove your menus.xml file, and rebuild/restart Inkscape, or (2) add in those lines to your menus.xml file. 5) Loudmouth sometimes throws errors indicating that it was asked to extract attributes or child nodes from a NULL root node. I'm not sure why it does this -- I'm pretty sure I wrapped all the code that deals with node/attribute extraction with the appropriate conditionals -- but it's possible that I've missed something. In any case, these warnings appear to be harmless -- just annoying. 6) There's quite a few g_log() debug calls still present. I apologize for this -- I think they're useful, but maybe they really aren't. I'll remove them upon request, and certainly before release. Phew. I think that's all for now. Have fun! -- David

Isn't Linux fun? The problems with g_option_error_quark people are seeing is because both the static RPM and the autopackage were built against static versions of GTKmm 2.6, which introduces a silent dependency on Glib 2.6 even if only 2.4 level features are used. The solution is to build the portable binaries against *mm 2.4 static libraries. Aaron, can you rebuild the autopackage against *mm 2.4 static libraries and push a -2 release of the package, so users on GTK+ 2.4 systems can use them again? thanks -mike

Sorry, problem solved. I used sp_repr_css_set_property and sp_repr_css_change and it worked :-) Still a small problem remaining: after a while I get the error "Collecting from unknown thread." Is it possible that some of these functions are not thread safe? I use gdk_threads_enter and gdk_threads_leave. If someone knows this problem, please let me know. Google Summer of Code updates needed

Hi all! One of the key, oft-proven principles of Open Source development is "Release Early, Release Often". This is important because it makes it easier for other people to help you. I think for our Google Summer of Code students, it will be vital for their learning about Open Source processes to go through at least a couple releases, so they can see how this works in practice. I know it's a bit different from what we're trained in school to do; in school you have a due date and you (in theory) work on your assignment in secret from other students, and turn it in at the end. Open Source is very different; it's like you take your half-finished assignment to the clubhouse and trade answers with everyone else, and the more you cross-check with each other, the more likely everyone is to get a perfect score. ;-) Anyway, with the 0.42 release wrapping up, we're at a point where we're ready to integrate work from the Google Summer of Code students. Michael, David, Greg, and Matthew, can each of you report in on where you are in your work, how we can help you, and what you might be able to add to CVS within the next week or so? I'm not sure if I can hook up my laptop and do a CVS commit from here, but I'll give it a try soon. The modifications to configure.ac are complete, and compiling with/without the whiteboard code works fine, so that's all ready to go. On the subject of required libraries: the whiteboard code, as of yesterday, also depends on Boost v1.31.0+ for functor argument binding, smart pointers, and some miscellaneous utility classes. effects menu

Hi, Before I go to bugtracker, I'd like to make sure that this is a real issue. Please take a look at www.lrn.ru/~avp/images/effects.png The first thing is easy to see: there is no particular order in menu items, or, to be more precise, the order seems to be random :) Would it be possible to at least alphabetically reorder menu items until extensions fraamework design (covering groups of effects etc.) is finished? The second thing is that "Grid" appears translated in contrary to other effects. I have no idea how this has happened. Is it an issue to be addressed? Best regards, Alexandre

I fear we are too late! OOo is geared up with OpenDocument support and I noticed that Krita and other KOffice apps already support the format. Man, why couldn't OpenDocument just use SVG man...ugh! projective transform extension (almost)

This morning on Jabber someone mentioned perspective transforms, so I wasted the whole day trying to see if I could write an extension for such a thing. I can't. I'm missing the most important part: the transformation matrix. But if someone can provide a python function to calculate the transformation matrix given the bbox rectangle of a path and an arbitrary destination quadrilateral, I think it might work. svgslice and inkscape autodetection warning

SVGSlice is now working as an extension. If anyone is interested in getting this into inkscape's officially included extensions, would it be possible to do this for 42.1, or is that going to be bugfix-only? There is one small Inkscape issue, which I'm currently working around. I'm calling inkscape from within an extension, like so: inkscape --without-gui --export-id="itemtoexport" --export-png="pngfilename" "svgfilename" But this outputs the following: ** (inkscape:25789): WARNING **: Format autodetect failed. The file is being opened as SVG. Strangely, this doesn't happen on the same file if I load it directly from the command line with inkscape "svgfilename". At the moment, I'm redirecting the errors from the inkscape call to /dev/null, since inkscape will display the warnings as an extension failure. However, I'd prefer not to have to do this, in case inkscape DOES have something important to warn about. Hello, all! I'm about to launch a new Bleeding-Edge Inkscape Factory (now with more bandwidth and more disk space and features) so I'd like some of you to test the generated packages. The temporary URL is: http://mrchapp2.homelinux.net/~inkscape/ This BEIF can do Autopackage for Linux and cross-compile for Win32 (and do Zips, 7zips, NSIS installers, and the good old à la carte directory.) I don't have a Win32 computer to test it with, so I'd appreciate if anyone can test it in the verge of this last release, so that Inkscape 0.43 will have a full-fledged factory from tomorrow on. I'm also very new to Autopackages whatsoever, and don't know if these packages are generated correctly. Hints will be appreciated. Also, this BEIF would be very easily replicated at some other hosts as I prepared a setup script that would take care of it all. I hope this will ease the cross-compiler installations. Number of Inkscape Users Worldwide

How could we estimate the number of users of Inkscape internationally? I've been thinking about this much. How many people use Inkscape on a daily basis, or have used it? There must be some good statistical method for calculating how many users Inkscape has...obviously, the concept of user would need to be refined, but is there anyone on this list that could speak to this? We know that we have at least 40,000 new downloads of 0.42 of Inkscape...which is a lowball figure for our total number of users IMO. Could we say there are several thousand users of Inkscape? working directory for extensions

Is there any reason why Inkscape remains CD'd to the startup directory when calling extensions, or would it be possible to set the working directory to the one a file is being saved in? WHAT YOU NEED TO DO: update your working copy with "cvs update -A" IF YOU ARE WORKING ON A BRANCH: use "cvs update -A -r BRANCH" instead. Here's what's going on: It's been reported that bitmap image files in e.g. the tutorials are broken on the Win32 builds. The reason appears to be that images and binary files were often not checked in with -kb as they ought to have been. So folks checking those files out on Windows got corrupt versions. I've fixed now fixed this for existing files via cvs admin. I'm going to try to make it automatic for common file extensions from now on, but I'm sure I'll miss some. In the future, please specify -kb when you "cvs add" a binary file. Thank you. -mental

Compiling under Win32 - isFinite() problem

Hello, I'm trying to integrate bezier-utils.cpp into our own GPL software, and integrated necessary headers (from src/ and src/libnr/ especially). So in essence I'm not compiling Inkscape itself, but it's obvious that I would get the same problem if I tried to because the bug has no dependance. Using the 'isFinite' macro doesn't work. Source used: inkscape-0.42.tar.gz System: Win32 (Windows XP) Compiler: Microsoft Visual C++ .NET 7.1.3088 Compiler Log: Compiling... bezier-utils.cpp bezier-utils.cpp(598) : error C2039: 'isfinite' : is not a member of 'std' bezier-utils.cpp(598) : error C3861: 'isfinite': identifier not found, even with argument-dependent lookup [...] The lines with error uses macro 'isFinite' Macro 'isFinite' is defined in 'isnan.h' #if defined(__APPLE__) || defined(__isfinite) # define isFinite(_a) (__isfinite(_a)) /* MacOSX/Darwin definition */ #elif defined(isfinite) # define isFinite(_a) (isfinite(_a)) #else # define isFinite(_a) (std::isfinite(_a)) #endif The last one gets used under my build environment. Looking at mailing list archives, this seems to be a recurring problem, or at least it has been mentionned several times already. Update of win32 libs

While looking at the buglist, I noticed more than one mention of a missing symbol in pango.dll. This can happen if Gtk or Pangomm do not find a symbol they need. So I checked the site, and there is a new pango win32 bugfix build, and a Gtkmm bugfix release that includes, among other things, the TreeViewColumn export fix. So I assembled these two into the libs, which are here: http://inkscape.org/win32/gtk26-050729.7z If you are a win32 builder, let me know how they work. I -hope- that this takes care of the missing symbol problem. I know that there are 3 missing symbols from atk.dll, but we will likely not encounter those. Little problems like these are "upstream," and we can only report them. It would be wonderful if we could build the whole dependency tree with Mingw from source all the way up to Gtkmm and libxslt, so that we could help find these problems and lend assistance in fixing them. Maybe we can talk with the Gtk/Gtkmm guys and see about doing just that. Bob

Would anyone be willing to present the project on my behalf? I have the slides, paper, and talk all prepared, and it would just be a matter of schmoozing and talking with participants. If I can't find someone to do this, then I will have to remove the presentation and maybe paper from the conference...which I really don't want to do. Needless to say my evenings are now spent in the lab instead of coding. I was importing most common elements common to dxf and svg, and was starting work on elements that were not common. The deadline is Aug 10th for the funding, so after then I hope to hit SOC hard after the 10th and finish it up. As far as exporting from SVG to DXF, there is some coding but as I understand the finer points of the two formats there is not much more than parsing the data and then saving to a file. One of the differences between Inkscape and commercial applications like Quark and Adobe Illustrator is that many of our extensions come from external contributors, and thus there can be some implementational variability from one to the next. For instance, we allow them to be written in a variety of different scripting languages. This is a strength from the standpoint of allowing us to incorporate a lot of creative new features, but of course also has the weakness that we cannot enforce the same level of standardization that commercial development companies can. However, we have recognized that we definitely need to work in improving the way extensions work, and are hoping to focus on making them better and easier to add in over the next several months, so your input here is quite relevant, thanks! Each Xtension is written in C and compiled as a DLL and is just dropped into the Xtension folder alongside all its fellow Xtensions. Any other installation requirements do not concern Quark and can be handled any way you choose. Quark supply a header file and a library file of all their internal functions which are visible to the Xtension developer. Needless to say, there are several thousand functions in that library. Adobe do an almost identical thing, except that their Plugins are written in C++. I am not advocating that you adopt the Quark/Adobe solution in toto, I am just pointing out that the management of plugins is important and can thus influence the choice of architecture. As I've started to get some more time on my hands lately, I guess now might be a good time to jump in :) I've got about 6 years of C++ inexperience (the last 4 professionally) and I've done quite a bit of UI code (gtkmm in the beginning, but Qt for the past 4 years). I've got some comments/questions first though, related to the quoted text above: - An updated roadmap/tasklist would be very nice, looking forward to that. - I'd be interested in helping out with the Gtkmm work, so I'm curious about the state of affairs in that department. Does the current gtkmm stuff live in a separate branch in CVS? I've done some gtkmm/libsigc++ code in the past (will have to read up on the API's again :)). I'll read through the Rearchitecture discussion in the Wiki later tonight to try to get a better understanding of where you're headed (are these documents fairly up to date btw?). - Cairo is something else I'm interested in, but I'm guessing this is a bit further down the road? - It would be nice to have faster rendering of the documents under windows (I think I read a bug report on this). Is there any interest in profiling and optimising the current code, or is the move to Cairo as a vector drawing backend meant to take care of this so that it would just be a waste of time? In any case, I'll start out with familiarising myself with the current codebase first. If any of you current developers have any small/minor tasks I could get my feet wet in that would be great (speaking of which: is the InkscapeJanitors page in the Wiki still valid?) svgslice: guide vs. rect methods?

The previous version I did of svgslice allowed slicing by drawing rectangular areas to slice, AND slicing by the use of guides. The guides are quite inflexible, though, and and became largely obsolete when the rectangle-based method was done. Rectangles allow overlapping areas, and specifying things like the slice name in the rectangle's properties. Eventually, it could allow things like setting the output format for that slice, and its compression level, etc. Guides *are* a bit faster for simple stuff like just slicing an image into two halves. But I'm a little concerned about the confusion for users of having two separate methods, etc. Would anyone miss the guide-based method if I left it out and focused on the more flexible method? Dynamically changing SVGView

Hello, First of all, congratulations with the 0.42 release. I'll install it today or tomorow. I'm working on Inkscape to create an SVGViewer. Now I've seen in Inkscape that when I add in the user interface a rectangle, this rectangle is automatically added into the xml representation and also rendered. I would like to do the same, but with more complex structures. To give an example: I'm listening on a socket and on that socket I can receive structures in the form: <svg> <rect .... /> <rect .... /> <rect .... /> <rect .... /> .... </svg> Those structures I want to add to my SPDocument and render them automatically without recreating a new SPDocument. Does somebody know where I can find the code that is adding the rectangle in the Inkscape User Interface to the xml file and automatically renders the rectangle? Any help is always welcome. Incorporating the patch was not as smooth as I hoped. The main reason for this was the fact that there's no "autogen.sh" in the inkscape tarball. SO I took that from CVS. However, the patch seems to work. Compiling went ok. I'll send the RPM to the file list in a couple of minutes. Thanks Kees! Hendrik-Jan Thanks for the log. Looks like a "fix" for linking libgc on BSD broke x86_64. :( Try the attached patch for configure.ac (and re-run autogen.sh). Kees, I just ran ldd on the static 586 binary for 0.41 and 0.42. One difference is that 0.42 requires libgc: libgc.so.1 => /usr/lib/libgc.so.1 (0x40661000) while 0.41 did not. Why is that? Inkscape 0.42 release

This weekend the Inkscape 0.42 release was branched and tagged, and packages posted. Congrats to everyone that participated in this release! With CVS now tagged and branched, this means we are past the hard freeze. The codebase is now open for commits. Regarding CVS access: If you need access, the rule is that you must have two patches accepted. I know a *lot* of people had patches accepted, so there's probably a fair number of you who qualify. If this describes you, please email your SourceForge ID to me or another admin. (Note that you can continue using the patch tracker if you prefer, the CVS access is given for your convenience.) Our final step to complete the release is to get word out about the release. Rejon is creating and distributing release announcements, but I would also like to strongly encourage others to send out word. Please help us get word out about Inkscape 0.42. Tell people about the nifty new features it has; show off examples of the cool things you're able to do with it; write articles about it in some of the online news sites; find new mailing lists or websites to send our announcement; demo it at LUG's or other OSS gatherings; help friends or family members install it. Looking further forward, I think there is a general concensus that we want to get 0.43 out more quickly than 0.42. This is mainly to give the SoC students a chance to participate in an open source project's full release cycle. We're hoping that 0.43 can be done on the order of a month or two. Bryce

Inkscape 0.42 release

Simarilius pointed out that we're getting a surge of interest in our release. Just within the past day, there's been over 28,000 downloads of 0.42 packages: http://sourceforge.net/project/stats/detail.php?group_id=93438&ugn=inkscape… For comparison, we saw 168,750 total downloads of 0.41, including about 35,000 in the first month of the release. I have a feeling we'll be exceeding that a bit this time. ;-) Good work everyone, and congrats to Rejon for getting the release news out all over the internet, and to Bulia for getting an announcement posted to Slashdot today. The Inkscape Marketing Machine in action! :-) It's really impressive to see how well the teamwork has worked for this release; I don't think I could count the number of people who made critical contributions to the process, from debugging to documenting to translation to packaging to marketing. I'm trying to build inkscape on Mandriva Linux 2005LE x86_64. Unfortunately, the build fails on the check for gc/libgc. Here's the output: checking gc.h usability... no checking gc.h presence... no checking for gc.h... no checking gc/gc.h usability... yes checking gc/gc.h presence... yes checking for gc/gc.h... yes checking for GC_init in -lgc... no checking for GC_malloc in -lgc... no checking for GC_realloc in -lgc... no checking for GC_free in -lgc... no configure: error: libgc (the Boehm Conservative Collector) 6.4+, is needed to compile inkscape -- http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Hans_Boehm/gc However, gc is installed (version 6.5), and inkscape 0.41 did compile on exactly the same config. On Mandriva Linux 2005LE i586 inkscape 0.42 did configure without problems, using the same gc and configure settings. Does anyone know what's going on here? July 26, 2005 — The Inkscape community today announced the release of Inkscape 0.42, a cross-platform Open Source Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) drawing tool. Inkscape 0.42 is the most feature-filled release to date, with an exceptional number of major and minor new features, usability improvements, and bug fixes. While some of the new features simply fill long-standing functionality gaps, others are truly revolutionary. Inkscape 0.42 is one step closer to full SVG compliance. This release adds: * Flowed Text: Text objects that automatically re-flow to any shape (and not just a rectangle). * Text Selection: One can now select part of a text and apply any style to the selection, just like in a word processing application. * Gradient Tool: A completely redesigned and much easier to use on-canvas gradient interface with handles displayed directly in the drawing. * Effects: These are now usable from within Inkscape on all platforms. This version ships with a collection of effects including path interpolation, randomization, and various fractal algorithms. * Color Swatches: This standard facility of most graphics software is now a part of Inkscape. * Colored Clones: Clones may now be painted differently from their original. * Tile Tracing: The Tile Clones dialog can trace an existing image with tiling, producing a multitude of exciting effects. * Grid Arrange, Baseline Align, Unclumping: There are new, powerful ways to arrange objects. * Better PS/EPS Export: PostScript level 3 gradient support, better text handling, and a command line option for batch export are in this release. * Command Line SVG Analysis: Inkscape may now be used from the command line to query coordinates and dimensions of objects in an SVG file. * Better SVG/CSS Compliance: Notably, internal CSS stylesheets are now supported (read-only). * Mac OS X Support: In addition to Linux and Windows, Inkscape 0.42 is now available as a fully self-contained dmg package for Mac OS X. But you compiled Inkscape itself with apbuild, right? That should be good enough when using static libraries. At any rate, the dependencies look OK. Hello, just to announce that I committed source documentation changes to several dozen files. People are likely to recompile a lot but you know such things happen after new releases :] There are two doxygen config files in the distribution: src/inkscape.doxygen (used for the web pages) and src/Doxygen. The latter is specific for some files in order to be able to quickly check correctness or missing documentation. My goal for the next release is to have one-liners for all classes and functions in the source files referred to by src/Doxygen. In this regard, I will introduce \note, \todo, and \bug tags in comments, and I would ask people to use them for their own documentation, too. \todo's for example will be collected in a todo file by doxygen. \bug's should be moved into the tracker, eventually, probably. Finally, I noticed people use 'e.g.' and 'i.e.' incorrectly: you should not forget to always place a comma after them, i.e., e.g., like this. Reason: doxygen thinks the sentence ended there. ralf

Dating documentation

Hi all, Someone pointed out that while documentation in general is great, it's important to include a "last updated date" in it. This is because documentation usually far outlasts the thing it documents, and so when we read it several years after it was written, it be incorrect compared with the current state. Placing a last updated date into the file enables future readers to be aware that the information may be out of date. Anyway, something to keep in mind as we continue to make more good docs! Bryce

Images in the release note

Hi! Just a little remark: The release note would be more attractive (and more fun to read) if it is illustrated by images of the apropriate feature. I think many users (who dont have programming skills) are able to take screenshots, and complement the release note with it. For example the new gradient tool is really better domentrate with an image as write down the functionality. Best regards, Khiraly

The Inkscape version with that glibc bug was compiled from sources, and ran on the same system. It was the build inkscape-20050723-0000. Have you seen Kees Cooks instructions on building static libraries? They might be helpful. Also, are you sure that glibmm is in the APBUILD_STATIC variable and has the right name?
