- The About screen is not there yet. Has anyone contacted http://anarres.deviantart.com/ to get the SVG for #30 from him/her? - My patch for the freeze bug is not committed still. Release wardens, please take note. - Consequently, pre3 is not out yet. - Release notes for Ishmal and Joncruz still not filled out. - No one bothered to respond to my crash report on Win98. Does this mean we'll have to release with that bug? - No one submitted any screenshots for the site. - Reck Beton reports (https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=604306&aid=1224751&group_…) that we're having a number of regressions with regard to the W3C test suite, compared to earlier 0.42 builds. In particular, he says that styling tests no longer work. Peter, please look into this because that is an important feature touted in the release notes. - Mental has filed another fix-before-release bug: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1240029&group_id=… If JonCruz will not take care of that, patches are welcome. - I _think_ that issue lists such as this one should ideally be compiled by the current release wardens, not me... -- bulia byak Inkscape. in the help > tutorials > tutorial-tips.svg under the heading of "Entering Unicode Values" and it gives the example of Ctrl+U 2 0 1 4, there should also be placed a website so people can look up the codes for commonly used characters, if there is a website that details that. http://www.unicode.org/ucd/ The reason why I say this, is for instance, in our company, we build ads, and it is necessary to do lists, and tm's etc a few more usefull codes: 00AE registered sign 2122 trade mark 2022 bullet etc..

I see in Jabber someone suggested doing the release on Monday. I think it's not realistic for these reasons: 1. The pre2 still has no windows exe. What's up with it? This is CRITICALLY important because after pre1, Bob switched to the new libraries, which are very different (e.g. include gtk-wimp). So we currently have NO prerelease for the users to test these libs (apart from daily builds). It's a pretty drastic upgrade and I insist that we need AT LEAST TWO full prereleases, each with sufficient time allowance, to minimally test it. 2. To illustrate the above point, I just found a crash bug on Windows 98 (Russian) with the latest daily build, Inkscape0507151800.zip. Namely, when I use the Open dialog to go to a directory with a Russian name, opening any file from there crashes it. What's worse, it remebers that initial directory in the prefs, and when I do File>Open next time, it crashes immediately. The program becomes simply unusable until you delete your prefs file. I then tested the same on a WIn2k (Russian) system, there it works fine. However I don't think we can release it with such a bug even if it only affects Win 98 non-English versions. Here's what I get in an error box when it crashes: Pango-ERROR **: file shape.c: line 75 (pango_shape): assertion failed: (glyphs->num_glyphs > 0) aborting... Then I get another box with: Runtime Error! Program: C:\INK-LATEST\INKSCAPE.EXE abnormal program termination Then I get yet another box with two messages: Pango-ERROR **: file shape.c: line 75 (pango_shape): assertion failed: (glyphs->num_glyphs > 0) aborting... Pango-WARNING (recursed) **: Couldn't load font "MS Sans Serif 7" falling back to "Sans 7" aborting... And then again the "Runtime error" box (so 4 boxes in total before it finally dies). I then tried to get a backtrace but I could not, because when run from gdb (included with the build), it crashes right on startup: C:\ink-latest>gdb.exe inkscape.exe GNU gdb 5.2.1 Copyright 2002 Free Software Foundation, Inc. GDB is free software, covered by the GNU General Public License, and you are welcome to change it and/or distribute copies of it under certain conditions. Type "show copying" to see the conditions. There is absolutely no warranty for GDB. Type "show warranty" for details. This GDB was configured as "i686-pc-mingw32"... () #2 0xc95e2824 in ?? () Cannot access memory at address 0x54890187 (gdb) All this worked fine in the builds with previous libraries (without gtk-wimp). 3. And last not least, the "freeze on quit with Transform dialog" but seems to be harder than it seemed at first. Looks like there's not much progress there. And looks like if it's fixed, the fix will involve some pretty deep and dangerous changes, so it will need to be tested for quite some time. 4. Wanted: Windows user to review inkscape.nsi patches

Release wardens are supposed to act as reviewer for the patches posted to the tracker, but I don't have access to a Windows machine, nor any other reason to learn NSIS. Can we have someone to act as release warden for inkscape.nsi ? Documentation for NSIS files is at http://nsis.sourceforge.net/Docs/ so you don't really need to have any previous NSIS experience to be a better reviewer than I. (I haven't yet asked Kees as to whether he has access to a Windows machine or any familiarity with NSIS.) pjrm.

The Scribus Team is pleased to announce a technology preview of the next generation of Scribus - Open Source Desktop Publishing. The aim for this release is to bring improvements and enhancements for both professionals and beginning users alike. 1.3.0 improves Scribus' abilities in areas like performance, accessibility and workflow. With this release, we also commence support for Scribus running natively on Windows and Mac OS X. While it is very stable and usable, there are a number of under the hood changes which will continue through the 1.3.x series * Work is on-going to make Scribus more platform independent and alpha quality builds of Scribus are already working on Win32 and Mac OS X. Cursors Customizable?

I made some pretty simple cursor updates i hacked togather from the icons.svg. (see attachment ) Are the tool Cursors customisable like the Tool Icons? If so do the use the same SVG file? Can't build current CVS on Ubuntu

Hi, all, Since most of you guys (esp Bulia and Mental) are not on Jabber during the day while I am logged in, I thought I would send a bit of info to this list regarding finding the hang-on-close bug. I have been trying for the last day or so to find the reason that event processing, and thus gtk_main_loop() keeps running when all views are gone, and one or other of the dialogs managed by DialogManager have been displayed. Three things I know: 1) It is not the SPView in imageicon.cpp messing with the View-tracking code. I commented it out, no change. 2) It is not the result of wrap()-ing the SPView in a Gtk::Widget. Again, I commented it out with no change. 3) The DialogManager's destructor code seems to never be called, so explicitly deleting the managed dialogs would be a moot point. But if you think about it.. a dialog undisplayed with F12 is hidden, not killed. Of course it is still processing events. Below is the part of interface.cpp that is used for View deletion. sp_ui_close_view() is called by the verb for the File/Close menu item, while sp_ui_delete_view() is called by clicking the close [x] button. (I don't get that one. It seems to be a read-only function) By tracing, I found that sp_ui_close_view() always reaches the end of the method, and calls gtk_destroy_widget(). I can only guess that the persistence of Gtkmm objects is different from C Gtk objects, and that maybe we cannot just use the same idea that when all visible frames are gone, the application will just "go away." Maybe some explicit frame-counting and deletion would be necessary. Maybe transientizing needs to be done differently. Maybe maintain a std::map<Glib::ustring, SPView *> map of name->view of all editing windows.. When it goes to zero length, explicitly quit. This would also give us the ability to have a "Windows" menu. _load_uri fix

Whether or not we're in a hard freeze yet, I thought I need to give a heads up on a bug I just discovered and fixed. The function _load_uri in extensions/internal/svg.cpp did not convert the UTF-8 uri into local filename encoding. (Jon Cruz & me added these conversions to all places we could find, but this function was added by Bryce more recently, in the 0.42 cycle). Therefore filenames with Cyrillic characters did not work from command line or from recent file list. Now fixed, please test and review. -- bulia byak Inkscape. Draw Freely. http://www.inkscape.org

Looking over the remaining level-9 bugs, here are my thoughts: 1230742 etc/gtk-2.0/gtkrc broken in windows build *** ======================================================================== Sounds like it should be fixed for this release. Doesn't sound too hard. Not sure what the cause is, though. 1227186 0.41 won't start; uses 90%+ of CPU ======================================================================== This may be a packaging issue unrelated to Inkscape, and not a must-fix bug. 1227185 Layer Add Then Move Crash *** ======================================================================== This sounds fairly important, but it appears to be Win32-specific and we do not have a backtrace. I think someone on Win32 should test it and report some additional debugging info, and we should treat it as a must fix. 1226498 WIN: crash on open/import tiff ======================================================================== This bug simply requires use of libtiff3.dll in the windows package. If that's included in the latest package, then we can close this bug. However, I don't think I'd rank this one as a must fix, since it's an uncommon function and apparently occurs just on Windows. 1221401 WIN 2003: Loading the Tutorial crash Inkscape ======================================================================== Sounds like it's an issue with Gtk on Windows 2003 SP1, rather than Inkscape. Hard freeze

Let's plan on entering the Hard Freeze today, at GMT 2000 (about 6.5 hrs from right now). The release wardens for this release will be Kees (drb) and Peter (pjrm). Their job is to do final QA of the codebase, review all of the last minute changes to ensure that nothing has been broken, and to review/apply any patches that people wish to add prior to the release. At this time, please refrain from directly checking in code to the codebase, but instead post to the patch tracker. If you have any outstanding bug fixes, translations, or tutorial updates, please submit them ASAP. Kees and Peter will review and apply the patches they deem necessary for the release. When they are satisfied with the state of the codebase, they'll announce it is ready for release, and apply the official 0.42 tagging. This normally takes a few days. After it has been tagged, we will allow a day or two for packagers to create and test packages, and then announce! :-) Bryce

Hi, I am using inkscape-0.41 at an Athlon64 machine. The program was crashing whenever I used some tool which uses bezier curves (caligraphic tool, free hand tool (i think), etc.). The programa failed on a assertion, requiring the last member of a double array to be 1.0, like in: g_assert("bla".., u[len-1] == 1.0) This kind of comparision (equals) on double is unreliable, since rounding errors may introduce subtle differences between two values which we would expect to be equal. The correct way to verify this should be like: g_assert("blas",u[len-1]>=0.999 && [len-1]<=1.001). Where the constants are chosen accordingly. The code that creates this array is in the function chord_length_parameterize This is a snipped of chord_length_parameterize: gdouble tot_len = u[len - 1]; g_return_if_fail( tot_len != 0 ); if (finite(tot_len)) { for (unsigned i = 1; i < len; ++i) { u[i] /= tot_len; } } else { /* We could do better, but this probably never happens anyway. */ for (unsigned i = 1; i < len; ++i) { u[i] = i / (gdouble) ( len - 1 ); } } In both cases, u[len-1] should be very near 1.0, but not necessarily equals 1.0. Blinking rectangle

Hello, Is there a way to change the fill color from a rectangle without reloading the whole document. Normally this is done by using animated svg. In Batik it's possible to do it using the Update Runnable Queue. An example: I've a rectangle extension tag taking the normal rectangle tag parameters, but also two clors. Now every second I want to switch between the colors resulting in a blinking effect. Is there a way this can be achieved using Inkscape. Note: I'm not using the Inkscape editor, but I'm direct using the Inkscape programming code. So a possible way is to use a thread changing something on an object every second and throwing an event. The problem is I've no idea what object to change and what event to throw. Any suggestions, ideas or help is always welcome. Joris

configure help

I feel like this is a stupid question but I'm stuck. Yesterday I nuked sid and installed ubuntu. I compiled libgc and installed it into /usr/local. I checked and the files are infact in /usr/local/lib. but configure is unable to find libgc. How can I tell configure where it is? I try running configure with "LDFLAGS=/usr/local/lib ./configure" and I get a message like "C compiler cannot create executables". Aaron Spike

trimming trailing zeros in output

Appended is a patch to trim trailing zeros after the decimal point, so that `10.000000' becomes `10', and `1.500000' becomes `1.5'. (A couple of people have complained about our trailing zeros.) Given that we're so near to release, I didn't want to commit without discussing here first, i.e. whether to wait until after 0.42. This affects both SVG and eps/ps output, and possibly other formats. Are there any situations where e.g. `4' would have a different meaning from `4.0' or `4.0000000' ? E.g. in C `4.0 / 3' means something different from `4 / 3'; are there any similar cases in postscript or something ? Testing done so far: Inkscape compiles, and passes its test suite (make check). Error when building on win32

Since Arpad had done the round of updates to the .po files a few days ago, I get the following error when building on win32. make[1]: Entering directory `C:/cvs/inkscape/inkscape/po' c:\gtk26\bin\msgfmt -o am.mo am.po make[1]: *** [am.mo] Error -1073741515 And then it gives a windows error dialog with an OK button that says msgfmt.exe couldn't find intl.dll. It was building perfectly fine up until that commit and he said he just did the updates like normal. I'm not sure what was changed, but compiling errors out since he updated those files. It may affect more than the "am" files because it dies on that one, which is the first for it to process. Anyone have any thoughts? Should I file a formal bug? Thanks! -Josh

New w3c proposal for xml:id

W3C has a candidate proposal for specifying the rules for the id="" attribute. http://www.w3.org/TR/2005/PR-xml-id-20050712/ Note how it says that W3C "licenses" the attribute "xml:id" for this purpose. Apparently, the purpose of this document is to more cleanly separate xml:id from other types of attribute. This will likely add the ID type to the DOM spec, as attributes are Nodes, too. This probably won't affect how we use the id attribute, but it is an interesting read, and might help with decisions on how we use it. Bob

Bug status for Inkscape 0.42 release

There's still a few more days before we officially kick off the bug fixing phase of the 0.42 release, however I'm going to start posting bug stats. For the 0.40 release we set a target of 150 points worth of bugs, but hit 360 points by the time we stopped counting. Pretty damn cool. :-) For this release, I'd like to up the challenge by setting our target to 300 points. We did it before without breaking much of a sweat, and we have over 200 bugs open currently, so I think this will challenge us to really beef up Inkscape's quality for this coming release. Once we've achieved the 300 point total, we'll doublecheck the list of critical bugs and identify ones that must be fixed. Hopefully we can close enough of these early that this will be a very short list. Idea: Website header competition

win32 compilation error

Compiling on win32 is slightly broken at the moment. When it's going through the "doc" dir, msgfmt.exe gives an error dialog about intl.dll missing, and it errors out the compilation. The error in the console is: make[1]: Entering directory `C:/cvs/inkscape/inkscape/po' c:\gtk26\bin\msgfmt -o am.mo am.po make[1]: *** [am.mo] Error -1073741515 I can still run the build since the exe and dlls are taken care of prior to the docs in the compiling process. I figured I'd point it out anyway though since the build doesn't complete. -Josh

Release wardens for 0.42 release?

As we move to the next phase in the release process, it is time to select the two people who will be responsible for our final QA check. Our process is to have one person from the previous release, and add one new person. Last time, if I remember correctly, the release wardens were Bulia and Kees. That was Kees' first time and Bulia's second, so the rotation would have Kees and one new person. Jon, would you be available to serve in this position for this release? Kees and Jon, I suspect we may be ready to go into final release next weekend. Do each of you have sufficient time next weekend (and possibly on into the following week) to do this? Thanks, Bryce

Hi, I reviewed the win32 installer a week ago. This is in the patch pipeline [1233880] and the pre1 is already made with that. This addresses at least 3 severity 3 defects. I would like to see this in the cvs before hard freeze to get the translations updated. Facing problem while using COMPRESSED SVG extensions

Hi, I am facing problem while using extensions. I am only concerned about extension for COMPRESSED SVG. When I try to run the executable it shows message box containing following message: [One or more extensions failed to load The failed extensions have been skipped. Inkscape will continue to run normally but those extensions will be unavailable. For details to troubleshoot this problem, please refer to the error log located at: D:\Documents and Settings\swapnil\Application Data\Inkscape\extension-errors.log ] AND extension-errors.log contains: [Extension "SVGZ Output" failed to load because a dependency was not met. Dependency:: type: executable location: path string: gzip] and I don't get the facility for compressing the SVG file. I have downloaded gzip exe and I have placed it in the system path, so what is the problem? What else it want? Can any one help me? Thanks in advance. Regards, Swapnil

There are print extensions, but they don't really match the architecture of the rest of the extensions systems -- they were added separately. They're really more like pluggable renderers. So Postscript is done this way, where certain functions can be implemented, and used to render the document a different way. This means that there isn't a scripting interface implemented for this (I have no clue to how you would). Anyway, no, there isn't currently a way to put that into the pipeline as a "print extension". But, you could have a "Save as multipage" extension with an autogui for all the settings you want... --Ted

Hi, while preparing the package of 0.42pre1 for debian lintian was not happy: W: inkscape: executable-not-elf-or-script ./usr/share/inkscape/extensions/inkscape-shadow.README This file gets the x-bit during installation since in share/extensions/Makefile it is listed as extension. Perhaps "otherstuff" would be a more appropriate place for it? Or better yet, shouldn't these READMEs be installed in the documentation directory, that is /usr/share/doc/inkscape? Inkscape build test system + current results

A couple weeks ago, Kees and I set up an automated test harness for Inkscape. It's been running smoothly and collecting test results. Currently, the harness simply retrieves the nightly snapshots and builds them, logging compilation or installation problems. Hi everyone, I am going to be setting up WordPress blogs for those who would like one, in response to the request for them for SoC people. Any Inkscape contributer is eligible for a blog, and you are very much encouraged to write one : ). I am going to set them up on the default "Kubrick" template, but if you want to customise yours you are free to do so. I will help people out with admin issues... but if such issues are created by you writing a template, adding plugins, etc. I won't be able to help (sorry, but I don't have time). Details I need are: 1) Name 2) E-mail address 3) A 'title' for your blog When it is set up I will email you details so that you can log into your account and begin blogging. You will be the administrator and responsible for doing any configuration that you need/want (don't worry there's nothing hard). Nightly build service

Hi, I'm in the process of moving my stuff to a new server and the nightly build service has been down for a while. I only have network access sporadically right now, and so I can't really maintain the nightly builds. Aaron Spike has taken over building the release autopackages: Aaron, would you be willing to do the nightly builds too? I can give you an account on my new server if you can do the work, I just don't have time anymore to fix it when the build breaks. A few weeks ago I checked the dxf libraries that are already out there (dime, Qcad (dxflib), blender were specifically mentioned in the proposal) and found all are GPL'd. After a discussion with Jon about licensing I became more aware of the possibility of releasing under several licenses. So I decided to write a dxf importing code using STL containers to hold the various levels of data. I hope that it will be something others can reuse. I plan to release it at least under the LGPL maybe some other licenses. At lease LGPL. As far a Dia. I thought about it few days ago but didn't bother to look because I was mostly done with the main parts of dxf reader. After today's posts I looked more closely and it is also GPL'd. Is there any specific reason we have the Effects menu off by default? >From what I heard extensions now work even on Windows, so why not enable them for the release? If they don't work without Python installed, do we now have a nice dialog that shows up when you try to run an extension (NOT on running Inkscape :) and says you need to install the interpreter? With such a dialog or something similar, I would vote for enabling the Effects menu. And in any case, I would like to remove the big "EXPERIMENTAL" in the preferences label. lingering documents

Well, so far I've not been able to find an actual memory leak with documents, but I have discovered that SPDocuments ARE actually managed by the garbage collector. Apparently I converted SPDocument over and then forgot about it. So, the upshot is that the old document will linger for some time until the next garbage collection pass. That wouldn't be an issue, except some stuff currently ties extra cleanup (like tearing down namedviews) too tightly to freeing memory, when it should really be done earlier. In the short term, the thing to do IS in fact to force a garbage collection when the document is closed. Apologies to the people I've gotten in arguments with over this... you all were right. The only trick is that the forced collection pass can't happen too early -- e.g. if there are still references to the old SPDocument in local variables somewhere in the call chain, or from other garbage-collected objects, that will prevent it from being collected. -mental

Summer of Code: DXF support, and my horrible pessism.

I'd like to know more about the Summer of Code project to add DXF support to Inkscape. I've read the Proposals page on the wiki http://www.inkscape.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?SOC_Accepted_Proposals What I am really interested to know is about reuse of code. The project description doesn't make any suggestion about reusing existing code and it looks like as if the Author is going to write something from scratch (possibly including other dxf code he has written previously). Dia already has a library for importing DXF (and there are probably other open source programs with their own custom DXF support and some with more liberal licesing than others). I would very much like to see this code generalised and turned into a library that could be shared by Inkscape and other applications to share the maintainance burden (or failing that make the new code for Inkscape so that it can be reused by other applications). I think the only way the project can succeed beyond the Summer of Code is if it produces code that can be used by more than just inkscape. We've all seen people gradually lose interest and watched bitrot set in. And will the inkscape developers be encouraging him to LGPL this code rather than merely GPL it? Sincerely Alan Horkan P.S. Is the void* data argument in XML node listeners available to pass extra data to listener callback routines, or does it have another function that would prevent that purpose? (For example, passing a pointer to an instance of a class that is unique on a per-document basis.) I've been reading the listener and DOM tree implementation and it seems that this is correct, but I just wanted to make sure. -- David

Updated Mingw cross-compiler

Hi, all, I uploaded a newer version of the cross-compiler. It is gcc3.4.4, built for i686-pc-mingw32, and with --enable-sjlj-exceptions. These options are intended to match the version of gcc that is provided in the Mingw 4.1.0 distribution. It is built to run at /usr/local/xmingw, like the previous cross-compiler. Gtk::TreeViewColumn hack

After checking the web, I found a simple hack on the Gtkmm bug tracker that will treat the symptom of Gtk::TreeViewColumn not being imported properly (and also later causing the Memory dialog to crash.) I am going to upload another copy of the libs with the tweak, but if anyone already has the new libs, it would be much simpler just to edit: gtk26/include/gtkmm-2.4/gtkmm/treeviewcolumn.h. Line 88 should read: class __declspec(dllimport) TreeViewColumn : public Gtk::Object That's 2 '_' Delete src\ui\dialog\memory.o and build again. Should work fine now. Open Clip Art Library Release 0.15 Announcement

July 8, 2005 UTC — Release 0.15 of the Open Clip Art Library (www.openclipart.org) is now on-line for download as an individual package consisting of 4336 images submitted by over 430 artists from around the world. The amount of high quality clip art has increased much with the inclusion of Nicu Buculei's Playing Cards collection and Gerald Ganson's package submission. During the month of June, thanks to Google's Summer of Code, a student developer, Greg Steffensen, has received funding to construct a graphical client for the Open Clip Art Library. This client will be able to be used inside Inkscape and other applications on the free desktop. Also, this work is dependent upon the new document management system (DMS) and is planned to use its SOAP-based webservice API to communicate with the Open Clip Art Library. In other news, developers Bryce Harrington and Jon Phillips are scheduled to present at Desktop Developers' Conference 2005 in Ottawa, Canada July 18-19. Hello, Is there a way in Inkscape to crop images? It may be in pure svg xml, because I'm only using the Inkscape viewer. the problem is when I put nested <svg> tags arround the <image> tag, the cropping is never executed. Example: <svg width=... height=... viewBox=....> ... some tags to draw like rectangles, .... <svg width="100" height="100" viewBox="0 0 100 100"> <image xlink:href="image_to_show.jpg" x="0" y="0" width="200" height="200"/> </svg> </svg> In this example I would expect only 1/4 of the image to be shown, but the image is always shown in total. Anyone an idea how to do this? Hi all, We're getting close to being ready to make the 0.42 release. Currently we are in Feature Freeze mode while we fix bugs. We've closed a lot of bugs over the past few weeks and are nearly ready to move into the next phase. Here is our process: 1. Start of release process - Finish up work on features. 2. Feature Freeze Mode - Shift focus from feature implementation to bug fixing <--- ** You are here ** 3. Hard Freeze - Two freeze wardens are named. All development must be done as patches submitted to the freeze wardens for review and integration. 4. Branch - The codebase is tagged and branched. Final release tarball is posted. The codebase is returned to regular open development. 5. Packaging - Three days are allowed for creating release dists (rpm's, deb's, exe's, and autopackages). 6. Release Announcement - A Release Announcement and a Press Release are written and circulated to relevant online news sites. Our Freshmeat record is updated. Judging from the speed of our development work, we may be entering into Hard Freeze mode as early as this weekend. At this time, in addition to resolving the remaining 'Must Fix' bugs, we need to wrap up work on the following: * Everyone who has added features, please describe your work on the ReleaseNotes page. * Arpad, can you let translators know we will be in Hard Freeze (including String Freeze) in about a week? * ScislaC, would you mind bringing AUTHORS up to date? 0.42: Call for screenshots!

We need more screenshots for 0.42. I recently added one screenshot for the new Align options: http://inkscape.org/screenshots/index.php and we have enough screens for clone tiler and i18n, but for the rest of the features, submissions are solicited. We would appreciate both "demo" (focusing on features) and "work" (showing real work projects) screenshots. Here are some requirements: - 1280x1024 PNG - Visually interesting. It's not to be a design masterpiece but it must not be too ugly, too unbalanced, etc. - Sufficiently informative. We can't have too many screenshots on that page, so we must try to cram as much stuff as possible into each screenshot. Don't waste space. Add objects, captions, explanations. Open dialogs, switch tools, make tooltips appear before shooting. Use objects both large (visible on the thumbnail) and small (visible in full image only). Make each screenshot a story that invites close examination, thinking, and experimentation. RDF id= fix

Just a quick note that I've just fixed bug 1184252, where we had been adding id= attributes to elements under rdf:RDF in violation of the RDF/XML specification. Now we only add id= attributes to elements in the SVG, Sodipodi, and Inkscape namespaces. Also, I've added code to strip existing id= attributes from under rdf:RDF -- I figure that much is safe to do because it's clearly wrong for them to be there. Even so, I think it would be a good idea if someone went through and resaved all our document templates so they don't include the bogus attributes in their metadata. Volunteers? -mental

Race condition in sp_gradient_invalidate_vector()?

Hello, both bugs 1038594 and 1196143 appear to be 'fixed' by not g_free'ing gr->color. This is a text gradient buffer mangled in both bugs (in 1196143 you can see some destruction of the picture when repainting after dialog release). In 1038594, valgrind tells me about attempted reads from the same address which was freed before, and gtk likely reuses the memory, and this fast. This would mean that there is a copy of the color buf somewhere that is not updated but I still am not well into the code. In the file libnr/nr-point.h, there are some C-Style casts in the code: /** \brief A function to lower the precision of the point \param places The number of decimal places that should be in the final number. This function accomplishes its goal by doing a 10^places and multipling the X and Y coordinates by that. Win32 testers needed!

Hi all, We are closing in on the 0.42 release, and getting the last few bugs fixed. There are a _number_ of bugs which appear to be Windows-only. Unfortunately, since the developers are linux-based, it's hard to determine how to fix them and to check that the fixes worked. Thus, if you are a Windows Inkscape user, we really need your help right now, in the run up to the release. Please review the Bug Tracker, and in particular look at the bugs that are ranked at '9'. Install both 0.41 and a version from CVS, and try to recreate each bug on each copy. Then add a comment to the bug report about whether you can or cannot replicate the error. Make sure you're logged into SourceForge, so the developers can contact you with more questions or to verify if a change fixed it. If you do not have a SourceForge account, please include your email address. If you want to help even more, it is extremely valuable to have backtraces. You can learn how to make backtraces on the Report A Bug page on the website. The more you can do to help narrow in on where the bug occurs, the more quickly it can be fixed. Please try to find a couple evenings over the next week to devote to doing some testing; even if you can only test a few bugs, you will help make Inkscape on Windows that much more robust. New gtk bundle

win32 crash on creating about memory dialog

Hi, on win32 the current cvs crashes after pressing "about memory" function. I use the new gtk26 libs from Bob. I tried this on linux and there it is ok. On one hand we really want to reduce the size of Inkscape, make it easier to install and faster to load. Which means that we want to make as much external as possible. On the other hand, most people aren't of the mindset to install lots of different packages. On Linux this is pretty easy, most distributions have reasonable package management. On Windows, it is much less so. But it still leaves the issue: how do users know where to go to get these features? We need some way to advertise them also. I realize that wasn't much of an answer to your question, but that is more because we don't quite have one yet. It's quite a thorny issue. --Ted

object.cpp build failure on Solaris

I've been trying to build Inkscape 0.41 on sparc-sun-solaris2.8, and have run into a bit of a problem. Inkboard CVS updates

I have committed a number of fixes to the Inkboard CVS <http://sourceforge.net/projects/inkboard> that address crashes related to buffer overflows. Instructions for building and running Inkboard can be found in my request for Inkboard testers that was posted to this list. Inkboard should now be much more stable than it previously was, sans conditions like invalid Jabber usernames or passwords. (I haven't gotten around to debugging those yet; I've been chasing down another bug, which is described below.) In a session between two peers Alice and Bob, if Alice sends a star, spiral, or ellipse, it will show up correctly on Bob's canvas, and (almost) any manipulations that Alice makes will be correctly replicated on Bob's canvas. However, if Bob manipulates the star, spiral, or ellipse in any way, the changes will not be correctly replicated on Alice's canvas. Additionally, Bob will not see the object as a star, spiral, or ellipse -- he will only see it as a path. I think these two problems are related, and since I'm not sure where to start with addressing the first problem, I've been focusing on the second, in the hope that it will cure the first :) I don't think this is a case of missing information: if Bob saves the document, exits, and then reopens it, any star, spiral, or ellipse will be correctly recognized as such, and not just a path. I think there's just something that Inkboard is just not triggering correctly. If anyone has any ideas on where to look or what to look for, I'd greatly appreciate them. Another, smaller bug: gradient editing is not replicated properly. Pressing "add" will replicate the changes, but the gradient objects themselves fall out of sync. Finally, just some thoughts about the near-future integration with Inkscape: Ideally, I'd like to begin merging Inkscape with Inkboard only when all of the bugs have been ironed out of the Inkboard code. That's rather unrealistic, though, especially since the act of merging may expose new bugs anyway! :) So it may be a good idea to create a new branch in the Inkscape codebase specifically for integration with Inkboard, and then merge branches when an acceptable level of robustness is achieved. -- David

current cvs - problems compiling win32

Hello, I checked out a fresh copy from the cvs. This does not compile with mingw because a used define is commented out in the makefile. See below. I also compiled a win32 installer for the 0.42pre0. This is 18meg, where should I put this? My webspace on geocities is only 10meg. Hi folks, Until yesterday I haven't had a chance to play with what you call effects. Because I believe this is a misleading terminology I want to propose an alternative: Scripts ------- Scripts are little programs, written in interpreted language, that supply extended Inkscape functionality. They can work on objects, or even drav new objects on the canvas. Both Blender and GIMP projects eventually came to a conclusion that it makes no sense to separate scripts form the core functionality in terms of interface. A script should be free to register anywhere in the menus, based on its functionality. Grouping them, creating yet another menu structure, just because they are written in a particular language is not helpful to the user. Yes, it is pretty much what you call effects now. Filters ------- Filters are operations on selected objects, on their bitmap renderings even. The result of the filter replaces the original object and cannot be easily changed in future. The resulting image is stored in the file upon save. Effects ------- Effects are similar to filters, yet they are "dynamically" applied on a bitmap copy of the object at the target resolution. guide lines: desktop vs document coordinate system

Someone has bug #1222819: “guides have different orgin than objects”: horizontal guideline positions are currently stored as distance up from the bottom of the document (i.e. desktop coordinate system), whereas shape positions’ y coordinates are represented as distance from the top of the document. The result is that if you snap a shape’s position to a horizontal guideline and then resize the document (File>Document preferences, Custom page size, then change the page height), then the shape and the guideline will no longer appear to be at the same position. In my local copy I've mostly fixed this so that the guideline's position from the top of the document is preserved (as for shapes) rather than from the bottom. Thus there is no distortion and there is no padding. IIRC this is what the librsvg rsvg_pixbuf_from_file_at_max_size function does (which I've found very useful in the past). Yet another thing you might want to do is specify the xscale and yscale independently. I can't recall ever needing to do this, but rsvg allows it. Finally, one might wish to specify things in DPI. If the SVG image is given in real-world dimensions (e.g., inches) giving a DPI to render at will allow you to make the PNG image show up at the right size when rendered at that DPI (to a monitor or a printer). Aspect ratio is preserved; this is just a (possibly) convenient way of setting the --scale. Inkscape provides a -d $DPI parameter allowing this. Note that this will not work with all SVG files. ---------- Of course svg2png should be able to do all of the above tasks. It would also be nice to keep command-line compatibility with rsvg, inkscape, sodipodi. The trick is to do all this without having confusingly many options or giving unexpected default behavior. Thus I suggest: --width=$WIDTH (-w) --height=$HEIGHT (-h) --xscale=$X_SCALE (-x) --yscale=$Y_SCALE (-y) --flipx (-X maybe?) --flipy (-Y maybe?) --scale=$SCALE (-s) --dpi=$DPI (-d) --pad [1] --stretch You may pad or stretch or neither but not both. The default should be to do neither (same as rsvg, inkscape, and sodipodi), this changes the current behavior which is to pad. (--pad and --stretch were suggested by Carl.) Supporting -d will require new functions to libsvg and libsvg-cairo to set the DPI. -x and -y are changed from flipx and flipy to xscale and yscale. This matches the rsvg args (they call it --x-zoom, --y-zoom). In case of conflicting options (--width and --xscale both given) the one higher up in the list is given priority (this is obviously arbitrary and can be tweaked a bit). Care should be taken to give a sensible output no matter what combination of args are given (rsvg is pretty bad at this). ---------- For full compatibility with inkscape and rsvg it would be necessary to add more "long argument" aliases. This would be convenient but would also add clutter to the interface. Inkscape also has some additional parameters that might be useful, either for new features or compatibility. See -a, -f, -e, -i, -j, -t, -b, -y from `man inkscape`. I don't understand all of these but some of them are probably desirable. In a related note xsvg should probably support a similar set of options. To mitigate overflow issues with fixed-size buffers in the Inkboard code for message transmission, I'm going to convert the Inkboard messaging code to use strings. However, I'm not really sure what string implementation would be preferred by the Inkscape team. As a lot of Inkboard and Inkscape code use glib facilities, the GString has that advantage, but since we're using C++... I don't see this explicitly touched on in the Developer's Manual or the InkscapeJanitor wiki pages, so I'm guessing it hasn't been brought up before, but if it's listed somewhere, I apologize for the duplicate message. -- David

icon duplicates

Some time ago I reported (and fixed) a duplication of strings in the unused code in src/ui. Now I discovered that the icons are also duplicated: in share/icons, alongside icons.svg, each icon is also in its own file. Bryce, can you please remove those duplicated icons because: - I'm in principle against tearing icons.svg into pieces, as I explained some time ago in a discussion here. This will slow down program loading (parsing lots of small files is much slower than parsing a single big file) and make editing less convenient. Another reason is that the separate SVGs will be significantly larger in the total filesize than the single file (and thus even slower to load) because in the single file, many icons with repeating elements use clones which save a lot of space and work faster. With separate files this is impossible. - People are already, and will be in the future, terribly confused as to which file is the real source for an icon. - The duplicate icons are already getting out of sync because icons.svg is updated from time to time. I am new to InkScape, but from what I remember from math lessons the dot product and the cross product as defined in the file have been confused. Dot is defined to be x*x + y*y, but in this file the author defined cross to be x*x + y*y. And also cross should be x*y - y*x, but the author defined Dot to be x*y - y*x. Thanks, Alex.

Hi all, Before I begin integrating Inkboard's code into Inkscape, I'd like to verify the presence of a few large bugs that I've found in the Inkboard code. As bugs can sometimes manifest themselves differently (or not at all!) on different platforms, I'd appreciate large-scale testing of this software. Quick rundown of the project: The Inkboard project's aim was to develop code that would add virtual whiteboarding capabilities to Inkscape, using the Jabber messaging protocol as its communication infrastructure. Its source code is available at <http://sourceforge.net/projects/inkboard>; documentation is available at <http://inkboard.sourceforge.net>. The latest CVS is identical to the v0.25 release, as far as I can tell by looking through diffs. Compilation: I believe the only additional library required is loudmouth <http://developer.imendio.com/wiki/Loudmouth>. I am using version 0.17.2-r2; I do not know if version 0.90 will work, but I'd love to hear if it does. Basic operation: Two instances of Inkboard must be started. Both clients connect to a Jabber server using the File > Connect to Server option. Then an invitation is extended from one client to the other using the File > Share with User option. (The invitation is automatically accepted by the other peer; this will be changed in the integration process.) Upon acceptance, the two Inkscape canvases will be synchronized. Bugs: Here's the five biggest bugs I've found. The "server peer" and "client peer" as written below are as follows: Let A select "Share with User", and let A also enter B's Jabber ID as the user to share to. Then B is the server and A is the client. (It seems backwards, but it's the only way I've managed to get it to work.) 1) Usage of the text tool crashes Inkboard while in a whiteboard session. 2) Anything except solid fills/strokes either crash the server side or are not transmitted properly except on initial whiteboard synchronization. 3) Deletion is extremely finicky -- missing child nodes in the document tree are a common problem, causing assertion failures in the document tree manipulator. 4) The server peer is the only peer whose updates are committed; updates made by the client peer are ignored. 5) Changes to some properties of objects (e.g. number of star points, number of spiral revolutions) are not transmitted immediately like all other changes. My platform: I'm running Gentoo Linux 2005.0, x86 version. Library versions are as follows: libxml2 v2.6.17 gtkmm v2.4.11 glibmm v2.4.7-r1 (-r1 is a Gentoo thing) glib v2.6.3 gtk+ v2.6.7 libsigc++ v2.0.11 boehm-gc v6.4 loudmouth v0.17.2-r2 (ditto on -r2) I am running jabberd v1.4 internally on a machine running Gentoo Linux 2005.0, amd64 edition. The only configuration change I have made on the Jabber server is disabling rate-limiting for faster updates. I am compiling Inkboard using gcc 3.3.5-20050130 in a distcc setup with the P4 and the AMD64 machine. More information can be found in the attached file. Hi all, Google has made the final selections for their Summer of Code and sent out the notifications. The following four applications were selected for Inkscape: Topic Applicant ------------------------------------------- Connectors - Michael Wybrow Inkboard - David Yip OCAL Interface - Greg Steffensen DXF Import/Export - Matthew Squires Of course, I was really hoping we could have a few more, because there were several other extremely good proposals for Connectors, Cairoification, libpdf from Scribus, a Genetics Algorithm based tracer, and much more. You can imagine how much discussion and debate that the reviewers have had this past week; it's been a very tough decision process. However, these four projects will provide Inkscape with some new strengths and new capabilities for our users. The prioritization process that the reviewers used in evaluating the applications weighed a number of factors to reach their decisions, including: The quality of the application, the background of the applicant and their familiarity with the subject matter, the importance of the feature to Inkscape, whether the effort would result in something of tangible benefit in the time available, and whether we felt the applicant had a strong likelihood of completing the effort successfully. Regarding mentors, we've not yet finalized on who will mentor which efforts, but there are several developers who have expressed interest in mentoring or whom I think would make good fits to the topics. Simarilius and I will be contacting these people over the next day or two and finalize the arrangements. In the meantime, Sim and I can field questions. Cut-off status bar text; solutions?

Hi, depending on your font and language settings, the current status bar sometimes has a problem of not showing completely. I especially notice this when I work on the German translation since German is more verbose than English. During the course of some discussions on Jabber/IRC, we come up with some ideas. One thing is what I'd call a "split" status bar: the primary text is in a normal font, and the secondary text is in a smaller font and typeset in two lines, like here: http://buug.de/~colin/inkscape_statusbar.png This is just a proof-of-concept (a hbox with two labels in it), and I guess some GTK hackery would be needed to make sure it doesn't expand to, say, 5 lines of text. One would also need to check that R-T-L script still works correctly etc. I can imagine that one thing is distracting: the "border" between the main text and the smaller additional text will move with every new string. cornelius[cz] made a mockup for another idea: a second status bar for the secondary text: http://cornelius.rvge.info/my_files/inkscape_status_mockup.png These two approaches places a rather big burden on the translators, of course, and has quite some impact on the strings in the code, so it is likely not be in 0.42. (Well, the "second status bar" approach would not necessarily need the text broken into primary and secondary text.) A third, "orthogonal" idea was to just have a tooltip for the status bar with the complete text. This would work for the current status bar as well as for any of the ideas presented above. Hello, I'm curious as to the state of the MAC OS X DMG of Inkscape? I would like to make the push to get a working Mac DMG of Inkscape out as part of 0.42. Many people I know in academia want to use Inkscape in the classroom. I also can't bear to watch my gf use Illustrator in all its clunkiness on her new mac -- honestly, it is bloated and is useless without the tracing feature. I'm always shuttling fixed images back to her so she can use in her work. Anyhow, I see the wiki page on Compiling OS X is quite full of a lot of comments, but no clear answer to the OS X package. http://inkscape.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?CompilingMacOsX Basically, I would like for our next release to come out with inkscape-0.42-mac-ppc.dmg at sf.net. Hi, I'm testing out the .42 version for translation consistency but I can't get it to compile the extensions. I've seen Summer of Code-related topics in this list before; however, I also know that John Cliff is the point of contact for SoC proposal discussion, but I'm not sure if he is also involved in mentor assignment. With that said, I'm interested in how mentor assignment will occur -- will there be a separate list, one-to-one correspondence, or some other method? My project proposal involved the integration of Inkboard's code with Inkscape's main trunk, along with a few extensions to the idea. Creating custom objects

I've written a plugin for Skencil that allows LaTeX text objects to be included and rendered, and am assessing the viability for doing something similar in Inkscape. I've seen the extensions description from last year, but none of the extension objects there really seem to meet the need. What I'd be looking for is creating a new type of object that retains its identity as an object so that the text can be edited again. So I'm interested in whether there are examples of something conceptually similar having been done already. Basically, the mechanism I'm looking for would allow an extension/plugin to: - create a new object that can be later modified as an object (including after being saved and opened again) - accept user input for parameters that can later be changed - run an external program when an update is made - import an external file to replace the current object curves (I' Once those things can be done, having a latex object is fairly trivial. I'd appreciate if someone could point to where to look for examples of extensions that do these things under inkscape.

win32 libglib.dll version

I'm wondering which version of libglib.dll will ship with the win32 builds of 0.42. Currently the CVS builds come with version 2.4.5.0 but it can cause a nasty little crash in the Save Dialog. I replaced it with 2.6.4.0 and it works fine on my machines. Save just isn't a place you want a crash bug. :) Aaron Spike

If you use svg2png or xsvg on the cornwall flag it > will be incorrect, but on the galicia flag it works correctly (or at > least I think so; if not I have other examples that do work > correctly). The first thing worth noting is that in galicia.svg (which works) the overall size is provided in unit-less values: width="999.000000" height="666.000000" which, according to the SVG specification means that these values determine the size in "pixels" (i.e., a px unit as defined by CSS2). Meanwhile, in cornwall.svg (which fails), the overall size is specified with real-world units (in this case, millimeters): width="234mm" height="140mm" So, converting those real-world units to pixels requires information about the real-world dimension of a pixel. In libsvg there's definitely a bug that there's no way to set that value, (instead it always assumes 100 pixels per inch). But that's not what's causing the strange behavior you're seeing. In cornwall.svg, after specifying the size as 234x140mm the first thing drawn is the "background" rectangle which has a size specified as: width="829.133850" height="496.062988" These values don't have real-world units, so according to the SVG specification[*] they should be interpreted as pixels. And ~ 829x496 pixels is only equivalent to 234x140mm if the pixels are sized such that there are 90 pixels per inch, (which must be the assumed pixels-per-inch value of the tool used to create this file). Therefore, the overall size of the SVG file changes depending on the pixels-per-inch value, but the actual drawing contents do not. And this is exactly the behavior you're seeing with libsvg-cairo. My recommendation for you is to just alter the top-level width and height attributes to use the same units as the rest of the drawing. That is, use: width="829" height="496" This eliminates the 90 pixels per inch assumption from the file, and also happens to avoid the need for a set_dpi function in libsvg. It would still be nice to have something like svg_set_dpi but it wouldn't be an adequate solution for this file. It would allow correct rendering at 90 DPI but not at any other value. Hi all, Today was the final day for the mentors to give input for the Google Summer of Code projects. Google is funding 400 projects this summer, including four projects for Inkscape. The decision for how many slots to give each project was based on the proportion of submissions sent in for each project. Approximately 50 people submitted proposals for Inkscape. There were over 10,000 proposals submitted in total, for 40 projects. Google will be making the final decision of which projects will be selected, based on our prioritizations. The prioritization was extremely difficult (I wish we could have had 8 or 10 projects), but thanks to the work of the reviewers I think Inkscape will gain four very significant new features over the summer. Yeah, I have that set to "1". Its really a strange bug in my GTK... the same thing happens with Python plugins in Dia. Anyway, I fixed the working dir prob with the glade file, made it return the original document when closed without clipart selection, made it write the raw clipart to stdout when invoked from the command line, and made it parse the svg to find the title metadata, and display that along with the preview image. The expense of grabbing this stuff (the png preview and actual svg) from the server is definitely starting to show, so implementing caching is next on the agenda. The new version is at http://download.berlios.de/termite/ocal.zip (I'm working on a windows box today, so its a zip this time- sorry). Again, let me know if it doesn't work... I still can't fully test it (because of the GTK prob I mentioned). The cxxtest directory in the CVS tree is not included in the distribution. Should it be? Should I have cxxtest installed on my machine? I tried to submit a bug report but sourceforge wasn't cooperating. If I create a shape like a triangle from three straight lines and then flow a word of text into it. Post Effect Selections

I missed an interesting discussion about which objects should be selected after an effect. I started of the opinion that the previous selection should be restored in order to make affecting the same objects again simpler. But someone suggested that the effect should be able to control the selection. That sounds very interesting. How would this be done? Would an effect insert some sort of attribute (like inkscape:select-me="1") into each object that should be selected? This attribute would be discarded by Inkscape on load. Any other solution would likely pass a list of selected ids. Id collision was one of the first things I wondered about while writing effects. What would happen if I assign a new object an id that is already taken? Inkscape of course fixes it for me. But I have been assigning no id to new objects and letting Inkscape handle the whole thing. This probably isn't a good behavior. And it wouldn't allow for ids to be passed back to Inkscape. What should an effect do to properly handle id assignments? Aaron Spike

Odd issue with copy-cut-paste.

Hi! I just spoke with bryce on IRC and he told me to go ahead and email the list. I have an issue in inkscape that only happens when I choose an object, copy, cut, and then paste that object back into the same file. Whenever I perform these tasks in a row, the object that I have just pasted disappears in any preview or use mode, such as in nautilus, gimp, gnome-panel, gnome icon themes, etc. but whenever I look at the file in inkscape, the object is still there. I can edit the object, distort it, reshape it, etc. and as long as I do not cut-copy-paste, the object remains visible. And nothing I do after the copy-cut-paste makes the object visible again. I have reviewed the xml files and I cannot see a difference that would make the object invisible. I have included two sample files: the original gnome-fs-directory.svg file, and then the modified gnome-fs-directory-issue.svg file that has a major object that has been copied-cut-pasted, that no longer appears visible. I can repeat this issue on any file with the same results. I've scoured google looking for any hints, and the only thing I could find was regarding Nautilus 2.1.5, and I'm on 2.10.0. Is there anything I can do to repair the object to make it visible again?

Hello ! Theres a bug listed in SF. BUG ID [1194728]. <BUG> Can't select multiple files in file open dialog I'd like to open (and work on/compare) some documents, which all are in the same directory. I can't just select them using control/shift-clicking, but it's necessary to open files singly. </BUG> I have a patch, that makes it work on the CVS head. It modifies src/file.cpp & src/dialog/filedialog.[h|cpp]. There are 3 patch files, one for each, Im wondering what to do. * Inkscape now features a complete support for flowed text: o Creation of flowed text is simple. Just drag anywhere on canvas (except over an existing text object) using the Text tool to create a rectangular frame. After you release mouse, the frame is created and you can type text into it. o Resizing a frame is as simple as dragging the handle in the bottom right corner to change its width or height. Drag with Ctrl to restrict resizing to horizontal or vertical. Such resizing can be done by Text tool, Node tool, or any shape tool; however, only Text tool also highlights the frame border when a flowed text is selected. o Transforming a flowed text is straightforward. It is selected as a single object including both the frame and the text, and can be moved, scaled, rotated etc. * Dragging with the Text tool creates a regular flowed text object whose frame is internal (does not appear as a standalone object on canvas) and rectangular. You can, however, create a different kind of flowed text: linked flowed text that can use as its frame any existing shape, including non-rectangular ones. It can also use a chain of frames, with the text flowing from one frame to the next one in chain. o To create a linked flowed text, select a text object and one or more shapes or paths, then use the Flow into Frame command (Alt+W) in the Text menu. When two or more shapes or paths were selected, they become a chain of frames for this flowed text. o A linked flowed text is in some ways similar to a clone. Hi, I'm getting my application in really late, and Google isn't working for some reason. My name is Greg Steffensen, I'm an undergrad at the University of Richmond, and here's the text of my application: ------------------------------------ Toward an Implementation of an Intuitive Visual Mapping of Remote Vector Graphics Repository Access Interfaces OR Creating an openclipart.org <http://openclipart.org> GUI for Inkscape This is a proposal to implement an interface to the open clipart library ( openclipart.org <http://openclipart.org>) in Inkscape, as suggested by the "Create a Clipart Library interface" item on the Inkscape Summer of Code ideas page. I'll introduce myself, describe the technical design I'd implement, and list some remaining technical questions and ways a mentor might help. I'm a 22 year old computer-science major at the University of Richmond (I'll be a senior this year). I'm also a open-source geek. To date, my personal free software contributions are limited to a patch to add fixed-aspect resizing of elements to the Dia diagramming program (if you'd like me to send you the patch for inspection, let me know) and a wrapper to allow easy use of the IE7 javascript library within Zope. I build websites for fun and cash. I've tried many distros, but have been happily using Gentoo on my own box for about 6 months now. I'm originally a self-taught programmer (I started on PHP, but I haven't used it for years, promise!), and am now most of the way through my school's CS program, and am doing summer research on the security of distributed computing with one my professors currently; for that work, I'm writing a custom distributed computing framework that I'm GPLing, based on Python and Postgresql. My preferred language is Python, but I consider myself competent in Java, C and PHP too (but I haven't used PHP in years, promise!). I use GTK constantly, and as I mentioned, I've contributed to Dia, so I know how to get around gnu-ish code. Philosophically, I align myself with the FSF, though I don't consider myself a zealot. Blah, blah, blah. Let's talk turkey. I've coded up a quick prototype of this project in Python, more as a demonstration that I'll actually be able to do this than as a preview of the actual solution. I just threw it up at the site I'm using to host my distributed computing project for convenience; you can download it at https://developer.berlios.de/project/filelist.php?group_id=3863 (the tgz is listed under Inkscape, obviously). I didn't have time to recompile Inkscape with support for extensions (yeah, yeah, save your Gentoo jokes), but it should work like a normal Inkscape effect extension; it takes an inkscape svg doc on standard input, puts up a gui for the user to search for then select clipart from openclipart.org <http://openclipart.org>, then writes the doc back to standard output, with the clipart inserted. It should be installable with a bare-bones .inx file like any other extension. The gui is GTK, of course, via libglade. Its pretty minimalistic, but should show that this project will not be difficult. I currently see two ways to build this thing; either as an extension, as the prototype is, or integrated into the main codebase. The advantages of doing it as an extension are that its more likely to be robust (it won't affect existing code, and should be easier for the maintainers to review), it can (optionally) be developed in a dynamic language (resulting in faster development and making it easier for others to patch and extend), and it will be easier for other projects (such as Dia or Kivio) to take advantage of the code. The main advantages of integrating it into the codebase are performance, tighter UI integration (the interface can appear as a child window within Inkscape), and wider distribution (anyone that can run Dia can run it, as opposed to needing to have extensions enabled and Python installed as well). Currently, the extension route looks preferrable (performance is a total non-issue and I expect the vast majority of Inkscape users to have Python), but either approach should be doable without too much difficulty. Either way, the code will have to query the openclipart.org<http://openclipart.org>server somehow, download the clipart, and insert it into the document. And, either way, the most natural way to provide the basic UI seems to be through the new Iconview class in GTK 2.6. Ok, now I'll summarize the most obvious issues that appeared while building the prototype. The main one is that the openclipart.org<http://openclipart.org>website is clearly in need of a technical tuneup. The keyword search is barely functional, and performance is already iffy. If they'd be willing to let me, I'd prefer to actually work on the site myself. I love doing database-based websites, and I'd be able to add a cleaner REST-based API for this and other code to use. Hopefully, I could also add some search results caching to speed it up. Which brings me to the next issue; I don't want this fancy new feature to kill the openclipart folks' bandwidth and run up their hosting bill, so the most important new feature to add is probably a way to cache clipart data that past searches have already returned locally. This should be easy; it just requires a storage directory and an index file. Along those lines, I'd probably also try to get the openclipart people to give each clipart a unique id associated with their system; it appears that all clipart currently has unique filenames, but its hard to be certain since they organize it into hierarchical namespaces. Even if so, they probably ought to be giving the files a numerical id in addition to a filename anyway (assuming they aren't already; I didn't find any, but didn't search exhaustively). That would make caching past retrievals locally technically simpler, would make the most likely to be used clipart available even when network access is unavailable, and would significantly reduce the load on the servers. In terms of the UI, I'd like to give people the ability to search by keyword or browse by categories (I certainly am not advocating that they get rid of the hierarchical structure entirely). I'd also provide simple boolean searching logic (AND, OR, NOT), which could be implemented with or without server access (although its easier on the clients and server if its done on the server). Searching by clipart author is also desirable (though not in the default interface), to help people find work of similar visual styles. The UI should make basic metadata available (the clipart title as the icon caption, and all associated keywords visible as a tooltip, for example). A list of the most recently used clipart should be available for convenience. Clipboard copying and large previews of icons will be available through a right-click popup menu. To insert clipart into their document, I intend to support dragging-and-dropping (this should be possible regardless of whether the interface is implemented as an extension or in the main codebase) or through basic icon activation (double-clicking, etc). The conceptual questions I've currently noticed about the UI include where clipart should be inserted into the document, and at what size. Through a dragging-and-dropping interface, it may be possible to place clipart near the drop location, though I am not yet certain of this. Otherwise, placing it near the center of the document, with dimensions noticably less than those of the whole document, seem like reasonable defaults (placing it at the center will, of course, require arithmetic). Gnome HIG compliance is also intended. One feature that may be necessary is XSLT-based conversion of incoming clipart to a more standard Inkscape-friendly format. The prototype seems to already be running into problems in this area; attempting to drag the new clipart object on the canvas makes my Inkscape 0.41 freeze, unless you save the modified canvas as Inkscape SVG beforehand. It is probably solvable by modifying the clipart object to use an svg "g" object instead of "svg" or something like that. Cleanup like this will be one major area that mentors could advise me on. The other major bug that the prototype demonstrated seems to be caused by gnome svg rendering support (librsvg, I assume). Many of the openclipart.org<http://openclipart.org>files cause my Gnome 2.10 to freeze when rendered by my app or Nautilus; Inkscape renders them fine, so I'm assuming the problem is in the SVG renderer, and for now I'm working around it by displaying the PNG images that the openclipart.org<http://openclipart.org>website provides, instead of the actual svg (the actual SVG is inserted into the document, of course). I would also write a tutorial for this feature, and try to publicize any new APIs for the openclipart library that I developed. The things that a mentor would be able to help with include Gnome HIG advice (I have no familiarity with it), insight into the Inkscape renderer (to help solve any bugs related to merging two svg documents, as described above), and information on how to make the feature as widely available as possible. Anyway, sorry to go on for so long, but I figured more detail was better than less. I'm actually a reasonably fun guy, sorry about the stodgy tone of this app, just trying to give you the info you want. I'm really a free software nut, and have a lot of hope for its ability to kickstart the economies of the developing world. This feature in particular is one that, while not technically very interesting, would probably be REALLY appreciated by your users, particularly the less technically adept ones that appreciate conveniences; if there's a single feature on your list that is likely to increase Inkscape's user base, I think this is it. With the proposal submissions now closed we need to think about who is willing to mentor for us as an organisation, and who is going to be on the tesam that review the proposals and rank them. Google are setting up a web app that will allow multiple people to simultaneously review the proposals, I'm basically asking whose willing to participate in this process? Hello. I'm interested in Google's Summer of Code. = resume starts = I am a little aged student of Electrical Engineering, Seoul National University. I have worked IBM solution SI (for 1 year), P2P LEGAL! ;) multimedia streaming server development at Korean top portal NAVER (for 2 years), and intranet and internet board game developments as part-time job. On opensource, I'm leading document translation projects (apache httpd, linux gazette) and have made minor patches (on i18n). I can speak C++, but I'm mainly using C, Java, Perl, Python. = resume ends = I plan to make many presentation format (PDF, swf, SVG, XSL-FO, CSS for print, ...) creation/convert tool/library. There are many good opensource tools/libraries. But I'm concerned about i18n (especially CJK) and (from the latest spec) new feature support. Then I'll evaluate them each, and choose one or start from scratch. I learned Google's offer from the new, and found that Inkscape's vector format import/export project and my goal overlap. Autopackage wiki page

Hi guys, Aaron has added a wiki page CompilingAutopackage to describe what must be done. Remember, in much the same way that they can install anywhere, they can be built anywhere too. That means they can be improved anywhere! So, I'd like to ask all Inkscape developers to take a quick look at the specfile, and make sure it's as you see fit. The basic stuff is things like checking the dependencies are OK, more advanced stuff would be packaging plugins and extensions too. I'd really like to push the idea that like with Windows/Mac software, packaging is a part of the development process and should be considered as a feature rather than something that somebody does mechanically at the last minute. Let me know if there are any questions, and I'll hopefully be sending in some patches this summer. thanks -mike

Change layer name "(root)" to "(Background)"?

Hi, the layer name "(root)" is not translatable until now - I filed the following patch for it: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1219305&group_id=9… As it says there, should we maybe change the "(root)" to "(Background)"? Gimp 2.2 uses this word, so unless calling this the "root" is vector graphics parlance, I think we should switch. Patch for -same strings, different contexts-

Hi, Maybe found a solution for the 'same string, different context' issue. It is based on http://developer.gnome.org/doc/API/2.0/glib/glib-I18N.html , and has a very small impact on the code. It works (compile and run) on my computer (compiled under Unbuntu, gcc3.3, following the indications of the wiki), and behaves OK in French and in English. The patch is attached there : http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1203796&group_id=9… It only requires developpers to use the Q_("context|translatable_string) when translatable_string is something that can have different meanings in different context, or if the string is very short. If this solution is ok for you, I can : - add some comments for translators on the already modified strings (only X,Y,W,L in src/select-toolbar.cpp and H,S,V in /src/dialogs/clonetiler.cpp - implement this solutions in some other cases (of short/ambiguous strings) Regards, Matiphas

Can't Copy with Win32 Build

So I have everything building just fine on my windows box at home, but at work I get the following error. C:\inkscape>make -f Makefile.mingw copy config.h.mingw config.h process_begin: CreateProcess((null), copy config.h.mingw config.h, ...) failed. make (e=2): The system cannot find the file specified. make: *** [config.h] Error 2 This is with a fresh checkout. And same steps as at home. I can fix it by copying these files by hand. Does anyone have a clue why it happens? Aaron Spike

Some elegant Element Renaming in Inkscape (0.41)?

hi all, i am a very happy user of inkscape for all my SVG needs, and have been using it for the last few releases very happily. thank you for all your hard work, you make wonderful things possible! one thing that i haven't been able to work out how to do, is properly name my objects. i use SVG as a design language, and elements in my SVG document need to be named certain things .. this "rect123" business doesn't really cut it. usually, i just hand-rename things, but lately i've found that there are some objects for which this method just doesn't work. how difficult would it be to add a feature in inkscape where you can select multiple elements, and then type in a 'name template', and have that applied to all objects? for example, i've got "circ1823", "rect123" and "object23" all selected; i want to group these together and give them a common name scheme that looks like this "object-01", "object-02", "object-03" .. i remember in some editing apps (was it Canvas or illustrator, i forget) you could multi-select a group of objects, hit 'Rename', and enter C-like expressions for renaming, like "myobject-%d" where %d would be replaced by the # of the object in the list of the selection. another thing that would be handy is 're-order group', where a group is selected, and you can re-order the name of the elements ("id=" tag) automatically.. is that feasible? should i look at making an extension to do this renaming automatically, would that be the easiest way, or maybe there's a secret hidden feature of inkscape already that allows you to do renaming such as this? -- ; Jay Vaughan

moving autopackage into cvs

Now that I have finally built an autopackage, I think it would be best to move the autopackage configuration into cvs and work on it from there. By default autopackage expects to find /cvsroot/inkscape/autopackage. But it should also work with /cvsroot/inkscape/packaging/autopackage if makeinstaller is run with the path as an additional parameter. Are there any opinions as to whether or not I should add this and where it should go? Mike walked me through some changes to configure.ac, in order to get the autopackage to build. http://www.ekips.org/comp/inkscape/inx/autopackage.diff As I understand some of those changes are just temporary tweaks. Could someone please comment on the significance of these changes? Is there a way to merge this with CVS without breaking anything? Aaron Spike

verbs.h and dialogs

Hi Bulia, I notice that you're working on adding a capability to set the dialog titles based on their verbs, however I notice that this is requiring adding a verbs.h include to each of the dialog .cpp's. I'm concerned that by doing this, it's going to cause the dialog code to be recompiled extremely frequently, since verbs.h changes relatively frequently (77 revisions recorded). Bryce

Well, here are my two cents google summer of code proposal Make a program that reads a .wav file and converts it to a svg drawing. It will make a graph with: -A center line, representing 0 wave pressure. -An upper and lower limit line. -A graph of pressure axis. Nothing more than consecutive line joints. Well this is easy. It will make a svg sound file (resolution independent). Then make a program that reads this drawing and take sound samples at a given sample rate.(svg->wav). (Harder). Problems: -inkscape(v.0.41) rulers (0,0) start at bottom-left. It seems it understand internally (0,0) as upper-left. Rulers say >0 is up and right, internally down and right. -strange px units. I would like to speak as cm, inches... -Use a library to understand wav or read directly. -Memory structures management.Done. -Make a svg-sound-parser.Search and read a svg-sound element. -Generate wav.(easy). Well, I'm making it anyway, but if someone could pay me for it(google), it will be much faster :-) Jose Hevia

Hello there! Ive got Inkscape-0.41 tarball,[not from CVS]. Then Ive filledin the dependencies gc, gtkmm, libsigc++, etc. I configured with all extensions perl,python, disabled binary relocation, and used gnome-print. Now the whole code compiles well, but I get a link error in the final stage[duh!] of making ./inkscape program itself. There was some errors in ./extensions/internal/ is not able to find references to 'GnomePrint::comment()'. Well Im trying ./configure without gome-print, and other combinations. Attention translators: I just made the name of the default template, default.svg, translatable. This means it will show up in your po files. If you are OK with the current default template, you don't need to do anything. If however you want to make a different default template for your language - for example, translate the name of the default layer or change page size - just "translate" default.svg into, for example, default.de.svg, create the default.de.svg file with your changes and commit it into share/templates. -- bulia byak Inkscape. Did that and it still complained about three files missing: helper/sp-marshal.h helper/sp-marshal.cpp inkscape_version.h So I copied the corresponding *.mingw versions into place. Bob, Last night I tried to compile Inkscape following the directions you have provided here: http://troi.hous.es3.titan.com/inkscape/ It seemed that I needed to change the location of the GTK folder in mingwenv.bat as well as Makefile.mingw.common. If I'm not doing something wrong you may want to add that to the directions. And when I compile I get the following build error: extension/script/InkscapePerl.cpp:16:20: EXTERN.h: No such file or directory extension/script/InkscapePerl.cpp:17:18: perl.h: No such file or directory extension/script/InkscapePerl.cpp:18:18: XSUB.h: No such file or directory make[1]: *** [extension/script/InkscapePerl.o] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `C:/inkscape/src' make: *** [all] Error 2 Mental suggested that I disable the embedded interpreters. But I never ran configure to enable them in the first place. And I don't know how to turn them off. Any suggestions? Thanks, Aaron Spike

Before I learned how to compile CVS, my major concern was "How can I keep the stable version and CVS installed at the same time on linux." This was, of course, no trouble because the stable version was installed to /usr/bin/ and the CVS version was installed to /usr/local/bin/. The reason I had worried was the autopackage nightly builds. When I installed an autopackage it installed in the place of the stable version. Having both versions has been a good experience. It is a safety net. If a old feature breaks in CVS it is likely I can still use that feature in the stable version. Best of all I can do this without having to revert to an earlier version by uninstalling and reinstalling. As long as I was pestering Mike Hearn with my naive questions about building the autopackage, I decided to ask him if there was a way the packaging system could handle the issue and give users the ability to keep side-by-side installs. Mike suggested that the best solution might be to build a different executable for CVS i.e. inkscape-cvs instead of inkscape. This sounds reasonable to me. For instance, the sylpheed mail client has a sister project that builds the experimental sylpheed-claws version. The usability of CVS is definately one of Inkscape's strengths. I think the smaller the barrier between new users and CVS the better. Comments? Aaron Spike

Memory usage during linking

I'm not sure if this was just the machine I was testing on, but the memory usage during linking appears to be fairly intensive. The system was low on swap space, and compilation actually triggered the OOM killer. I had the machine pretty loaded with other stuff so it wasn't a total surprise, but I'm curious if others are having this problem? Is it a new problem? Also, are there things we could be doing to reduce the memory load during the final link? Bryce

Trace and Script dialogs

Bob, I have a few questions on a couple dialogs... I notice that "verbs.h" is included in the headers. I see this is for the 'verb_num' argument that's been added to the Dialog constructor. I looked in Dialog::Dialog() but it doesn't appear to get used in that function for anything. It would be nice if we didn't include verbs.h in the dialog headers, because verbs.h changes often and would force the dialogs to be recompiled excessively. What is the verb_num argument for? Regarding naming, Jizzbug and I felt that the new dialogs should not have 'dialog' in their title, as it's redundant since they're in the Inkscape::UI::Dialog namespace already. Would it be possible to rename TraceDialog to Trace, and ScriptDialog to Script? In TraceDialog, I notice you have a TraceDialogImpl class; it turns out that due to DialogManager, the dialogs are encapsulated well enough that we really don't need to use the Impl trick. Anyway, nice to see all the new dialogs in gtkmm. :-) Bryce

*PLEASE FORWARD AND POST LIBERALLY* June 10, 2005 UTC — Release 0.14 of the Open Clip Art Library (www.openclipart.org) is now available for download on-line as an individual package consisting of 3415 images submitted by over 200 artists from around the globe. The project has progressed much this month on the future core of the Open Clip Art Library, the Document Management System (DMS) and more infrastructure has been implemented for the website due to user-demand. In addition to the aggregration of developer blogs at Planet OpenClipArt (http://planet.openclipart.org/), the project is now using the freedesktop.org provided bugzilla bug tracker (https://bugs.freedesktop.org/buglist.cgi?product=openclipart.org) to focalize feature requests and bug reports related to clip art, dms, the website, and other concerns. And, in response to people having difficulty contacting developers, there is now a contact form on the main project page. With regards to the Open Clip Art Library's growing release size, there is now an SVG-only package. And, for all those Windows users out there, the project is now providing a Windows installer that supports 40 languages and allows users to install and uninstall versions of the library package safely and securely. Now is the time to contribute artwork to the library and help develop the infrastructure which allows for easy clip art distribution. All summer the project is looking for summer themed artwork. What a great time to get out of the heat and lend a hand to the ongoing development for the project. Or, go outside and get some inspiration for making some artwork for submission. I found I can define my own palette, either in ~/.inkscape/palettes/ or system wide in /usr/share/inkscape/palettes/ and it will be loaded in the swatches dialog. So I made a Gnome HIG palette (attached), which can be used when creating icons. How to input non-ASCII characters in Inkscape

I see variants on this question from time to time, like How does one get special characters, like left and right quotes, in Inkscape's text? How do I type Greek/Russian/Chinese/Tamil/... in Inkscape? Here's the answer as best as I know. I hope people can fill in the gaps, and perhaps work on making this easier to do from Inkscape. If you only rarely need to type the odd ‘déjà vu’ or degree sign, then the simplest way is with a gui character selection program like gucharmap (Accessories>Character Map in the Gnome menu, or Text>Unicode character map in the Debian menu system). gucharmap wishlist item (which I haven't yet reported): It might be nice if gucharmap made it a bit easier to find commonly-sought characters (introducing hierarchy into the long list of categories, or adding one or more pseudo-blocks of commonly-sought characters that might span more than one of the named blocks). (In its favour, gucharmap does have a search function that can search in character names & descriptions.) Also, it might be nice if gucharmap were to to show any Multi-key combinations defined for the character (see below). If you type non-ASCII characters a little more often, then you might instead use Compose/Multi-key key sequences. The file /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/en_US.UTF-8/Compose lists available key sequences. Many of these sequences start with <Multi_key>. Some keyboards have a Compose key labelled as such. Some X sessions are configured to use the right `Alt' key as Compose/Multi. In my case, I use a ~/.xmodmap file that makes my print-screen key act as a compose/multi key: the ~/.xmodmap file contains a line keycode 0x6F = Multi_key Sys_Req and I do xmodmap "$HOME"/.xmodmap in my ~/.xsession file. However, note that some of the key sequences of interest (e.g. Multi_key o o for degree sign, or Multi_key < " for open curly double quote and similarly the corresponding > and ' versions for closing or single quotes) are available only when using the X input method rather than gtk's default input method -- see below. For typing extended blocks of non-Roman script, you'll want to use an input method. The only way I know of to switch between input methods in a running inkscape session is to open the Text dialog box (Ctrl-Shift-T or in the Text menu) and go to its Text tab and right-click in the text entry area: gtk should give you its standard text-entry context menu including an Input Methods submenu. One can change gtk's default input method (usable in Inkscape's standard in-document text entry) with the GTK_IM_MODULE environment variable, e.g. export GTK_IM_MODULE=xim (X input method) or export GTK_IM_MODULE=scim (Chinese, if you have the scim package and its gtk input method on your system). It would be nice if Inkscape offered an Input Methods submenu in its context menu for text entry. Abiword has code to do this in abi/src/af/xap/unix/xap_UnixFrameImpl.cpp:XAP_UnixFrameImpl::_runModalContextMenu, but I haven't looked into that. Should Inkscape do anything else to make it easier to enter non-ASCII characters? Perhaps have an item in the Text menu to launch gucharmap? Should something like this message go into a short tutorial available in the Help menu? pjrm. -- bbyak: swatches, rich text, gradient on canvas... Inkscape Artists, I'm giving a presentation on Inkscape at my local LUG on the 21st, and I need some really outstanding examples of work done in Inkscape so I can really wow them. I've looked at the Wiki page and will be linking to some of the work I found there, but I really need some more examples I can actually put in my OOo Impress presentation, which will subsequently be published on the LUG's web site. I'm interested in receiving examples of your best work of any variety, short bio information (with hyperlink, if applicable), and copyright licensing details, so that I can use them as I've described.
