Tentative patch for downscaling in Cairo

Hello I had a look at how complex would it be to add correct downscaling to Cairo now that Pixman supports convolution filters. It turns out it this is rather easy. Here is an initial, minimal attempt. It uses convolution filters only if the image is being downscaled by more than half a pixel in at least one dimension. Some discussion: 1. The sampling and reconstruction kernels are picked in a way that gives comparable quality when upscaling and downscaling. I paired box sampling with bilinear reconstruction and impulse (point) sampling with box reconstruction. This gives the expected result for NEAREST filter. BEST filter uses Lanczos3 for both kernels. 2. Subsampling bits are always set to 1, since this doesn't seem to affect quality at all. 3. I am not sure whether this code works correctly for matrices with a skew component. It should be OK for any combination of scale, rotation and translation. 4. This patch causes new failures in the test suite: - recording-surface*: possibly an effect of improved quality. - surface-pattern-scale-down*, surface-pattern-big-scale-down: the reference images should be updated. - pthread-same-source: I have no idea why this is failing, since this test shouldn't even trigger the new code. - large-source-roi: this test attempts to downscale an image which is 30000 pixels wide down to 7 pixels. The filter parameters seem to be created correctly, but they might trigger an overflow somewhere in the convolution code; the output rectangle is white instead of red, as if nothing was drawn. - device-offset-scale: there are subtle differences which look like convolution-related smoothing; I'm not sure whether this is OK or not. Note that master currently fails many more tests, I only listed new failures cause by this patch. Regards, Krzysztof Kosiński

Workflow with bazaar and the append-only trunk (used to git)

So hopefully I will have access to trunk in a couple of days and before committing directly to trunk I want to confirm that I've understood the workflow with bazaar correctly so I don't mess anything up and make it as easy as possible for me to develop. I use Ubuntu and work from the terminal. I've read the http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Working_with_Bazaarpage a couple of times trying to figure out exactly what workflow would suit me. The SVN style goes away directly (I want to do everything locally first and push only when I say so). The git-style branches with bazaar seems somehow forced into bazaar and not very appealing to me. I'm left with the branching and pushing...and I can live with the little longer time it takes to branch the big codebase. My questions: 1) The big "gotcha" is that I shouldn't merge trunk into my feature branch and then push back to trunk, is this correct? 2) If I develop a new feature in a separate branch is the following workflow a correct way to get it into trunk? cd trunk bzr pull (get the most reason trunk first) bzr merge ../myproject bzr commit -m "Added myproject" bzr push Regards -- Christoffer Holmstedt

[Recolor] Weekly Progress #1

Hello devs, I spent the first week researching requisite stuff (more or less) so I am not counting that as the first week. [Making 24th June as the start point]. As planned in the Timeline, I have successfully rewritten the colorwheel code and modified it to a new GUI very similar to that of Adobe Kuler's Editing GUI. Here's a snapshot. What it looked like earlier: [image: Inline image 2] What it looks like now: [image: Inline image 3] Notice the following changes: 1. ) The saturation is now handled by the distance of the node (the hollow circle on the wheel) from the centre. As we move closer to the centre, we get less saturation. 2.) The brightness value is handled by a slider below the Alpha Slider. It automatically paints the Alpha bar accordingly. 3.) Clicking on a new spot on the wheel, moves the node there and repaints the selected object accordingly. The next stage through this week will be adding functionality that if more than one objects on the canvas are selected, the wheel is painted with its respective nodes in the correct color areas. What shall ensue will be adding a inner class/data members of nodes to the color wheel with their appropriate events (dragging, selection, deselction, main_node etc). I am currently working on retrieving the objects selected on the canvas. Can someone help me with information on how to use getStyleProperty(gchar const *key, gchar const *def) {...} ? I basically need to check if the style is solid fill and then retrieve the color. I tried these variants: 1.) getStyleProperty("fill","1") = gibes me entire style field in XML editor except the 'fill' keyword written. 2) getStyleProperty("color",NULL) : (null) is returned. My second bug fix is available now at https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/180912 it builds and works just fine but I have one question. I had to include "event-context.h" in "verbs.cpp" and I'm not sure if this coupling is wise to do. Any comments on that? I didn't want to move the special toggling feature for the dropper tool to verbs.cpp mainly due to the space toggling to "select tool" and back would still be in event-context.cpp. During compilation there are a few "unused variable" warnings and other kinds of warnings as well. Within the Inkscape project do you usually file a bug report against this (for keeping track of stuff) and then fix the warning(s) or just fix it? Regards -- Christoffer Holmstedt

Docked Panel heights

I have a recurring problem, which I don't know if I should classify as a bug. Perhaps I'm just missing something. I tend to work with several layers. Usually three, four or five. I also tend to work with several open docked panels - fill&stroke, object properties, align. My recurring problem is that the layers panel tends to compress to a size in which only two layers are visible. If I close or minimize a dock it will always cause the fill&stroke panel to expand unnecessarily - while the layers panel remains too small. Actually any other panel will expand at the expense of the layers panel. If there are more dock than vertical space, and the scrollbar appears, there's still no way of expanding the panel. So, is this something that's it's possible to fix? is it window-manager dependant? (I'm on Windows). Perhaps there's some settings file I can change manually to force it to stay just a little bit larger?

Help needed with ofset

Hi to all, im writina a live-effect that need paralel lines to a SPCurve. I have it working with livarot/path-outline but it give me holes i dont want. [Templates]

Hi! Here is my first progress report. I've been mostly working on understanding gtk and designing some more details about my project. Here is my code branch: https://code.launchpad.net/~slagvi/inkscape/templates I also attach a gui project I made. In fact most of the code responsible for displaying data is already written but if something is not like it should be, please tell me as soon as it's possible. And here is some explanation. I decided to use tags/keywords instead of categories, as it has been suggested by some of you. But there aren't to many keywords or templates, so all the keywords will be displayed in a list. Clicking on one of them makes appropriate templates to be displayed. Of course one template can be tagged by many keywords. Some of you were talking about previous mockups ( http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/NewFromTemplateSpec) flaws. So I tried to make the interface as simple as possible. All the additional data (like long description, translations, used keywords, license etc) are hidden, as most of users won't need them in the everyday use. It will be displayed after "more info" clicking. What is not in this image, is a short description of the template and its preview. I'm still not sure if preview is a good idea. In most cases it will be just a blank, white page of different sizes... Short description will be added. Procedural templates will have the two first columns the same, the third will be completely different but i will start thinking about it after static templates are ready. Please, tell me if its correct, so I could make it work on real templates. I would also like to ask for a wiki account, as it would be better to update all the templates specification via wiki page, so they would be visible for everybody, all the time. Jan Darowski, Slagvi

extension parameter type

I've looked around be can't find a definitive answer to this question. Is there a parameter type for inkscape extensions that would present the user with a multi-line input. The type "string" presents a single line that doesn't respond to pressing "enter" to generate a newline. Thanks, Robert

Is Inkscape the wrong tool for what I am trying to do?

Maybe sounds like more of a philosophical question that related to development but there are some things Inkscape does that I either don't understand or that work in ways that are counter to what I want. I seem to have recurring problems with object dimensions changing. This is a problem as I am doing what might charitably be described as mechanical drawings, parts that need to fit together with some precision once they're made into physical objects. I can create an object of some specified dimension (100mm by 100mm) and come back later to find that it's 100.107mm or something. I'm going to see if I can find out what it takes to repro this and file a bug against it if I can make it happen. I also don't get why the stroke and dimensions are summed in the toolbar that specifies the size of an object. I generally work in outline view with stroke turned off because I don't like that adding a stroke value to an object also changes it's dimension. I'm slowing coming to rethink this as the stroke being the cutter width or kerf, which is useful but if I then have to contend with shifting dimensions, it gets frustrating. Is there a way to break apart the dimensions of the an object from it's stroke values? Or maybe a toggle that displays the true dimensions and display the stroke and fill for visual reference/clarity? It would useful to work in Normal view and have the colors there but the dimensions then become a problem. If I specify a 3mm opening and 3mm component to go in it, I want those numbers to display while I work. Maybe Inkscape is the wrong choice for me. I like the ease of use/low barrier to entry and getting things done, and the price is definitely right. But maybe I'm making work for myself. -- Paul Beard This space intentionally left blank.

Markers, a note about Rev 12363

Dear Devs, I've just pushed revision 12363, it includes a simple but user-facing change to the markers in the stroke-dialog which puts them all on one line and removes the drop down label. Now looks like this: http://imagebin.org/261038 I decided to keep the label row data for MarkerCombo for posterity, but remove the display function. I also used the hbox which cut down dramatically on lines since hbox use is the same between gtk2 and 3. I didn't compile with gtk3, but I expect it to work. Please let me know if there are any problems you have with the change. I decided to implement to favored design change after reviewing the feedback on a group of design changes for the stroke dialog. Selection and Symbols

Dear Devs, I'm still working on this UI update for symbols. It's mostly working now, with the exception of the UNSYMBOL verb which as originally implemented required a use element be selection which referenced the right symbol. To fix this weirdness, I wanted to try out an idea. What if selecting a symbol in the TreeView on the right changed the currentDesktop->selection too. Then the verb could act on the selected item directly and as an added bonus, there's a conceptual way to select defs and maybe act on them in the future functionality or plugins (imagine a plugin that acted on a symbol, cool). Only problem is, it also creates a bounding box on the canvas of where the group used to be, with transform handles and everything (which was fun to poke to see what would happen). Before I go down a rabbit hole, I wanted to check in with the team about what the best way to select items would be and if defs should or should not ever be selected in this manner (I'm looking at you xml-tree-editor). [Tracing] First steps/progress and some images

Hello ppl, I just finished the task for week 2 from my proposed timeline<http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/project/google/gsoc2013/vinipsmaker/48002>. This task was related to create a graph from an input image. This graph will be used by later steps in the Kopf/Lischinski algorithm. I'm attaching a zip file containing 4 input images and a set of output images representing the intermediate steps of the graph generation. There is a README.txt file inside this zip with further information. The next step of the algorithm is to improve this graph further more with three heuristics. Because we need to paint the center white, we have two options: ( I suppose ? ) One is to include a distance from the center that shall be the faintest white from the center We can choose this distance to be 20% of the radius allocated. This white coloration can be accommodated into the above snippet but what I fail to solve is how to add the transparency ? Should I calculate a separate 'buf' that is then OR-ed (overlaid) with the 'p' buffer to create that effect ? OR I can create a smaller circular arc and use radial gradient (white at center and transparent at circumference , radius again 20% ) and overlay onto the same surface used to draw the initial color wheel as shown in the picture above. I personally feel, the second option is easier because the first option would require to know how rgb changes when a certain degree of white is added to it. Your views are looked forward to.
