0.49 Release Plan Discussion

Hey All, It seems like it would be jumping the gun to put forth a proposed release plan without getting input from everyone on what should and should not be pursued during this cycle. After some feedback it should be a bit easier to put forth a somewhat realistic timeframe. Again, the goal is still to have a release before the end of the year. (Note: 0.48.4 is going to be cut hopefully in the next week or so) First, I want to address, what major features and issues are still left that people want include and will be able to wrap up in the near future? We still have some outstanding bugs with the new renderer which should really be addressed when possible. I know I will be going through the tracker soon to look for our blockers and must-fixes... others are welcome to do this as well. Our "start" time is still pretty unfriendly... valgrind just screams that it's fontconfig taking up the biggest chunk of this. I have no clue though if anyone is interested in taking this on. Also, it's time we get the skeletal pieces in place is the release notes. If you don't have time to write the full text, please write a placeholder Todo. Anyone is welcome to do this, if you are the author of a new feature or notable change or bugfix, traditionally you are the one to write this (as you're usually the most familiar with the feature). I don't believe we should include compatibility to compile against GTK3 as it will be viewed as a supported feature. So, where do we stand. I would really like to get a proposed release plan out in the next week if possible. Any suggestions for a theme for this release's About screen contest? Cheers, Josh

Augh, can someone do something about those "WARNING **: Inkscape currently only supports color-interpolation-filters = sRGB" messages? They're clogging up my console while I'm trying to get other bug messages. :( (but all my text tool problems are gone, yay!) There are two files attached: - The New doc file is the first file that crashed when I was testing Powerstroke. In fact, even now, it crashes Right when I open it. :P Which is rather fortunate because I wasn't able to get a second file that crashed once to crash again, nor the Tests file. - The Tests file is my more systematic attempt to reproduce the error messages. I basically started with the same-ish shape for different algorithms and cusps and attempted to torture the lines until I got a proper error message. In particular, I've marked one shape where it was quite easy to reproduce this error message: WARNING **: Exception during LPE [Unstable!] Power stroke execution. lib2geom exception: Invariants violation (./2geom/piecewise.h:144) Just select with the F2 tool, and drag the diamond back and forth between where the two lines point at. The error message should pop up. I was able to reproduce that error in several other lines but not as systematically. It seems to affect mostly the Linear and Spiro algorithms, though it may affect other line types too. It usually happens when editing the powerstroke width. No matter what I did though, I wasn't able to reproduce a crash in this session (and not for lack of trying).

IDE DEVELOPMENT

I need an IDE developed, just like any other drawing tool that users can draw on. The major features is that it would have a tool which users can pick and drop into work space and users would be able to save as SVG and .TeX I want it to be able to perform simple animations in layers and interpolation (ie. users can specify paths and the system generates the other paths automatically ) let me know if you are interested. Font size in pt

An often requested feature is to be able to view and edit font sizes in points (pt) rather than the Inkscape default pixels (px). In style.cpp the font size is always set to be px os << key << ":" << val->computed << "px;"; // must specify px, see inkscape bug 1221626, mozilla bug 234789 Is there a compelling reason why Inkscape always uses px units for font sizes ? The mozilla bug 234789 seems more related to the case of having no unit specified. Any way to access these old bugs reports like 1221626 ? Queries about lib2geom

Hello people. I'm interested in integrating lib2geom on a project I'm currently working on where I require strokes to be converted to paths and unions of paths to be produced. Do I understand correctly that lib2geom provides these (among other) facilities? Whatever documentation material I am able to turn up on the net is at least a few years old. Can anyone please confirm whether lib2geom (and the proposed transition of inkscape to it) is being worked upon? Please also point me to from where I can download the current lib2geom snapshot or how I can clone the repo. I hope I don't have to download the entire inkscape repo for this. Please also clarify whether the same location contains the python bindings as well or if different, kindly point me to where I can get that as well. Thank you very much! -- Shriramana Sharma

export eps missing text elements

Hello, I have an eps figure that I generated in the program R (figureToImport.eps attached), I imported it into Inkscape, I saved into an svg file (tmp.svg attached), eps file (tmp.eps attached), and pdf file (tmp.pdf attached). The problem is that the eps file, but not the svg or pdf files, are missing all the text of the figure. I am using Inkscape 0.48.3.1 r9886 (Mar 29 2012) on Linux. But I would prefer to use free software. I am proud of having built a complete research project with free software (Linux, R, latex, ...) and I would not like to ruin my record for the generation of the paper graphics :) I would greatly appreciate any hint on the reasons and/or solution to this problem. GTK+ 3 build complete

Hi All, Trunk now builds against GTK+ 3. We now need to do a serious amount of testing... there are bound to be a large number of runtime errors! To build against GTK+ 3, you need to have upstream gdl installed. Configure the build using "configure --enable-gtk3-experimental" then run "make" as normal. Cheers, AV

Exchanging lcms dll

There appears to be a relocation related problem with the Little CMS dll on Windows, see this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/453931 Now, someone pointed to an alternative version of the dll that seems to behave better in this respect. Can we just swap out our version of the dll for that one, or am I overlooking something? Perhaps we desperately need lcms to be compiled with certain settings? (The alternative is probably to try and recompile it ourselves and see where that gets us.)

I propose we retire the Gradient Editor dialog before 0.49 Any objections or concerns ? For retiring: * Old, not maintained code with many bug reports still piling up * Almost all functionality is available in the Gradient toolbar / on-canvas editing now For keeping: * Can be used to edit gradients in the document but not used on-canvas. Backwards compatibility issues of using a new SVG attribute for representing guides

Hello Everyone, I'm working on improving the usability of guides as a GSoC project. My mentor (Johan), suggested that henceforth "inkscape:guide" be used instead of "sodipodi:guide" as the SVG attribute for representing guides. In my branch one of the things we worked on was to change the co-ordinate system used by guides from desktop co-ordinates to document co-ordinates. Snapping, general guide operations etc. seem to be working properly after the co-ordinate change in my branch. A problem arises when a user opens an SVG that has "sodipodi:guide" using a build of Inkscape that uses "inkscape:guide" as the attribute. What should (ideally) happen in this situation? Johan suggested the idea of creating an extension script that transforms between new and old guides. The user will be made aware of this extension when an incompatibility is detected. Samuel

LPE: Curvature normal (request)

Hi Devs, hi Maximilian, I have a wish for a new path effect – or a modified one, since it is quite similar to the Ruler effect (that's why I CCed Maximilian who wrote it). It should act like a ruler (i.e. draw lines perpendicular to the path in regular intervals), *but* their length should correspond to the curvature, showing how much the curve is bent (second derivative). Example image: http://granjow.net/uploads/bugs/curvature-normal.png For Bézier curves this could be done analytically, but I would wish it to be numerically (i.e. the derivative over some distance like 10 page pixels). The use case I have in mind is bow making, to visualize irregularities in how the bow bends. OCAL upload in Inkscape

Hi all We are working on Upload to Open Clipart Library API, it's correctly on our dev server and we'll move it to live, when we will have clipart remix option, and we do some test. We are working with ImageBot and they are the first one that use the API on their site (there is Edit button on their site that got to theirs), on their dev servers. Do you want to implement OCAL Upload to Inkscape? If so I can give that person(s) access right now to dev server (it's not protected we only don't publish it's url publicly), or they can wait until it will be live. I can send working php example that upload to OCAL from different domain, (probably we will need to tweak API a bit to fit non www application), I can send this code to person that will want to implement this, the code for now it's only documentation (but it's very simple and short). Should Inkscape

Hey guys, I'm trying to use inkscape to moc up something quickly, but it's getting in my way. It keeps on trying to snap to anything and everything when I don't want it to EVER snap anything to anything, in fact I'd love snapping to go away as it's hard enough to draw with a touchpad without having inkscape making my nodes go to the wrong places automatically. I just looked at the inkscape prefs, there's no kill snapping option. I guess I'll have to go in and disable it via code, unless anyone has any suggestions? Best Regards, Martin Owens

New extension: svgtextext_to_pdflatex

Hi everyone, I have just made a new Inkscape extension. See https://launchpad.net/svgtextext-to-pdflatex The purpose of this Inkscape extension is to export Tex Text objects as real LaTeX code, not just paths. This way, the typeface can be changed from the LaTeX document without having to regenerate all the Tex Text objects inside the figure in Inkscape. It also ensures consistency with the fonts used in the rest of the LaTeX document, and furthermore, it is possible to cross-reference other parts of the document from within the figure. The extension has been tested in Ubuntu with pdf2svg installed. To install it, download the two source files, put them in ~/.config/inkscape/extensions and restart Inkscape. This will add a menu entry to Extensions > Export. Håkon Marthinsen

Provide simple way to export images optimized for the web

I often use inkscape to create website interfaces. But exporting things in inkscape works fine only at 90dpi, when i try to reduce it to 72dpi exported images are stretched accordingly. Rather than change the default export tool, my proposal is to introduce some specific features to export optimized images for the web. I'd like this workflow: - Mark groups/elements for export (very simple: just add an attribute to xml) - Create sprite images - Mark groups/elements to be exported together in a sprite image - See/copy css for sprite image - Select export for the web ... from 'File' menu - In the export dialog select which elements/sprites to export and where - The images exported are optimized for the web using some tool like pngcrush (not only 72dpi) - maybe necessary css code could be exported along with sprites also Implementing something like that and correcting some other little problems should bridge the gap between Inkscape and Ilustrator or other commercial tools in terms of website interfaces design

vector printing win32

Hello, I've been trying to solve a 2+ year issue with inkscape and my printing device (laser cutter) not accepting paths as vectors. All I can seem to get out of inkscape is rastered images. Yes, exporting to PDF works, but it's not a fix and not a great solution either. As such, I've been digging in the code to inkscape versions 0.46 to 0.48.2 on a win32 platform. Why was a call to cairo PS level 3 commented out on line 101? And can you tell me if the call to renderItem() is sending bitmap or vector data to the surface? Where in the code chain might the vector paths be rastered? Cheers, sV

Old configure options

Hey All, Is there a reason we still have the --with-perl and --with-python configure options? Apparently they still don't work on OSX with current trunk and didn't work in some linux distros as of a report from forever ago (circa 0.44pre0). suv's understanding was that they were only used for our internal script dialog which was disabled prior to 0.47.
