Sample file request: R->L and T->B languages, in a couple of file formats

It would be a big help to me in getting the EMF sections of the code right if some developers who uses an R->L language and a T->B language could prepare a set of samples similar to the files listed below. Then email them to me. But before actually starting work on this please post back to the list first saying you will be doing this, so only one person needs do this for each language. Samples are only required for one R->L and one T->B language. These samples don't need to be a 1:1 translation from English - I probably won't be able to make any sense of what they say anyway, but it is important that the starting document edited normally in PowerPoint in whichever language you use, since that will likely affect what the emf file will look like internally. Left,center,right justification will look more or less the same (at a distance) in a R->L language. That is, the same parts of the screen are written, just different characters. For a T->B language I believe Left justify slides to the top. The near collision of the text blocks at +45 and -45 degrees is intentional, please do that in the other languages too. The samples from other languages do not need to have the text in exactly the same positions as the English samples. The English language sample files were made as follows. 1. Compose the file in Powerpoint in a standard slide. Be sure to put a slide sized rectangle on the bottom or step (2), below , will not scale correctly: http://saf.bio.caltech.edu/PPT_G_P_I/#P2I_method Save the presentation as a *.ppt file. 2. In PowerPoint, in that slide window select all right click one selected object save as picture. (give it a name and use "Enhanced Windows Metafile" to create the *.emf file). 3. Take a screen shot of the PPT slide, or of the EMF in Windows Preview, and save as PNG to make the *png file. 4. The SVG in the example was constructed by hand so that text would be at least somewhat editable. EMF import was not used because the text ends up in many little pieces, ie: http://saf.bio.caltech.edu/PPT_G_P_I/#I2P_formatted_strings To make the SVG in Inkscape I suggest: format a 10 x 7.5" page, then import the *.png into it, align it to the page, and lock it. If the underlying rectangle was used in step (1) then the PNG will be exactly the right size. Then create a second layer above the first, enter text to match the underlying PNG. Easiest if the underlying text is black, and the upper layer is red. I used vertical kerning for super and subscripts, because it was not otherwise possible to match those character positions. When the overlay is done, remove the lower layer, change the text to black, save to make the *svg file. Thank you, David Mathog mathog@...1176... Hello. In the branch https://code.launchpad.net/~jabiertxof/inkscape/B-Spline whe develop spiro pen while drawing, as first part of the b-spline editing. You can check it and comment. Now i have a problem, i want to convert a node CUSP to SYMM or SMOOTH. I have the SPCurve -now drawing- and is in a function whith SPPenContext but the GEOM::POINT to change is not the last of the SPCurve (Is the penultimate). Any body can help me? Sorry for my bad english

Building .app on Mac OS X with Macports

I'm trying to build inkscape 0.48.2 as a Mac .app application using Macports. I'm on Mac OS X 10.7.3 with Xcode 4.2.1 and Macports python 2.7.2 with numpy and lxml. According to the wiki page [1], I should use the osx-app.sh shell script to create it. So I attempted to run the script as stated in the wiki but it did not work for me, saying that it wants the python modules directory to be specified. $ pwd /opt/local/var/macports/build/_opt_mports_trunk_dports_graphics_inkscape/inkscape/work/inkscape-0.48.2/packaging/macosx $ ./osx-app.sh -s -b /opt/local/var/macports/build/_opt_mports_trunk_dports_graphics_inkscape/inkscape/work/destroot/opt/local/bin/inkscape -p ../../Info.plist CREATE INKSCAPE APP BUNDLE Python modules directory not specified. I think there is a good case made (both user acceptance and better distinction) for setting the default border to solid black in the below bug report. extension help requested

I'm modifying the nicecharts extension to make more charts and 'improve' some aspects. It now reads many lines and columns in a csv file to make several graphs at the same time. Its going very well except for this one problem: - when I feed it too much data inkscape locks up and does not respond. The amount of data is suspiciously low. Can anyone help me to debug it. What am I doing wrong ? - I have fixed a problem where lots of unused filters were being made. - I'm pretty sure I've got my layers and groups being made correctly. - The log shows the file runs to completion without errors but control never returns to the users. - To show the problem, 2 data files are available. one is good one is not. Well, hours later, and I still couldn't figure out where Inkscape hides its table of fonts/font properties. Another one of those cases where it is faster to write something from scratch than to figure out where it is buried in existing code. The attached small test case does the desired sort of calculation and works on both linux and Windows (mingw, with devlibs32 installed for freetype and fontconfig.) The first time it ran on Windowx XP it took about 30 seconds, presumably because it was making the font cache. Subsequent runs were fast. Found the cache file(s) in: C:\Documents and Settings\Local Settings\<username>\Apps\Temp\fontconfig\cache Strange file names, starts with a long string of hexadecimal characters and then ends in ".cache-2" or ".cache-3". Today's was 456KB and one from two days ago was 935KB. Not sure which other application made the older one, nor why that one was twice as large. Regards, David Mathog mathog@...1176... Regression with customizable filters on Kubuntu 12.04

With rev11689 and the Oxygen GTK theme on Kubuntu 12.04 customizable filters interfaces no longer work. It only applies the filter default settings and refuse to refresh. When changing to other GTK themes filters work without problems. ivan

Finally announcing 0.48.3.1?

Hi all, so today I was again approached by a user puzzled by the fact that 0.48.3.1 is shipped by most distro, yet our site still mentions 0.48.2 as latest stable. So I found myself a bit bold and proceeded with some action, after last discussion on this topic. Just to recall a bit the issue, 0.48.3.1 has been released as stable in February. Linux and Win packages were ready in June, and in July we had a short vote about the severe lack of .dmg, whose outcome was: «Make announcements and apologize, while explaining why we have left out a group of our users.» This was already two months ago, nothing went out... So, today I first committed to the web SVN an update of all links and labels, then I drafted a short announce explaining what's going on: http://titanpad.com/8eew4Q6uo2 Next step is to publish the announce and run a publish_web.sh to make it public, as I don't have powers to do this. I'm sure it could be polished/expanded a bit, as I'm neither a native speaker nor the usual PR guy. Guides, backwards compatibility

Hi all, The guide project has changed the format in which guides are saved to SVG. The question now is: how do we provide compatibility with "old-style" guides? My proposal: convert old-style definitions to new-style upon loading the file. Saving said file and opening it in Inkscape 0.48 will no longer show any guides in this case. If desired, we can create a python extension that saves the file with all guides converted to old-style. This is the way we went to "new-style" grids back in the day. (unfortunately, grids are stored in 'wrong' coordinates and will have to be transformed too...) Ciao, Johan

Indeed, I already had a rudimentary rotatable desktop working a while ago; it was only a small coding effort. What popped up were some UI questions: - page display - boundingbox, do we want it to rotate too or not? - thingies for scaling, shearing, rotating, should they rotate too? - horizontal/vertical directions for dragging objects with ctrl, should they rotate too? Etc... Related: it can be nice to have different scales in x and y dir. If rotating works, then it should be programmed such that any reasonable transform matrix works...? Inkscape 0.49 Proposed Release Plan

Hey All, The following is based on previous release plans. Let me know if there's anything missing. One thing I want to do differently is the bug hunt. No score for this release, only going for bugs milestoned for 0.49 instead. This also means we need to hit the tracker to ensure the milestoned ones are correct and to milestone and must fixes. The number of bugs already fixed in trunk is huge, so getting the work out for further testing "soon" is better. Dates are subject to change as always, hopefully they could be moved up (with the exception of the the time between Feature Freeze and Hard Freeze, for the sake of the translators). Translators, I would recommend getting started sooner rather than later. 1. Open development. (In Progress) 2. Chill. (September 21, 2012) Development focuses on wrapping up. No further refactoring. Identify 'make distcheck' issues Triage bug reports Run an About Screen contest First draft of Release Notes. Update tutorials and other docs 3. Frost. (October 5, 2012) Most development complete. Release Notes should be >90% filled in. Bug Hunt: Target those milestoned for 0.49. Post alpha quality tarball. 4. Feature Freeze. (October 26, 2012) No further development work. Disable features that can't be finished in time. Focus on critical bug fixing. Finalize all tutorials, docs, etc. Finalize all extensions. Translators create/update translations. Inkscape must pass 'make distcheck' Post beta quality tarball. 5. Hard freeze. (November 23, 2012) Only release wardens can commit to mainline. No further string changes. Focus on release-critical bug fixing. Finalize translations, release notes, etc. Post Release Candidate tarball. Packagers test creating pkgs. 6. Branch. (December 7, 2012) Establish the Stable Branch for release Complete any late-late-late work. Final verification of packaging, release notes, docs, etc. Publish more release candidates until ready for release. Plan 0.49.1+ release(s), as needed 7. Release. (December 21, 2012) Post inkscape-0.49.tar.gz Post packages Post official announcements 8. Open development. Yes, it seems like a ridiculously short timeframe given our history of making releases happen and how much we've strayed in the past. I do however feel it is doable given the change in the bug hunt requirement for this cycle. That usually holds us up. Also, no platform specific bugs will hold up this release. We will release for specific platforms as issues are taken care of. If anyone has objections or concerns, please speak up. As stated in the past... this is doable. Anyone interested to help with these questions about Inkscape's handling of keyboard shortcuts (and how to add files for new widgets)? Complete removal of libnr

Hello all. Revision 10589 removes all trace of libnr from Inkscape's code, which was a major refactoring goal. This is a rather big change and might break various things. Here is a short summary of the changes: 1. NRRect was replaced by Geom:Rect and Geom::OptRect as appropriate. 2. NRRectL was replaced by Geom::IntRect and Geom::OptIntRect as appropriate. Note that the semantics of Geom::IntRect's contains() function for points are slightly incorrect at this time, as max() will be considered part of the rectangle even though it should not be. This doesn't cause any obvious problems for now. 3. SPItem bounding box methods were rewritten. There are now methods for bounding boxes in 3 different coordinate systems: - visualBounds(), geometricBounds(), bounds() - bounds in the item's own coord system - desktopVisualBounds(), desktopGeometricBounds(), desktopBounds() - bounds in desktop coordinate system (origin in bottom left, but user-editable in the future) - documentVisualBounds(), documentGeometricBounds(), documentBounds() - bounds in SVG coordinate system The "geometric" version returns the object bounding box as defined by SVG (does not consider stroke, filters, clipping paths, masks, etc.). The "visual" version considers all of this to return the bounds of the area affected by the object. The legacy "approximate bbox" was removed. 4. NRActiveObject was used only by SPAction. SPAction was converted to GObject and NRActiveObject listeners were replaced by signals. Some changes to verbs were made along the way. 5. nr-point-fns.h was used by some things in the gradient editor and was replaced with code using Geom::LineSegment. Regards, Krzysztof

Default Export Area

Hi, I'm testing trunk few times a week and for some time now, the default export area is set to "Drawing" in the export dialog when clicking on a blank part of the canvas. To my mind, it should be set to "Page" as default. Yann Papouin.
