How to return an error from an extension

Hi everybody, After calling an Inkscape extension which generates output on stderr, a little info box pops up that says: "Inkscape has received additional data from the script executed. The script did not return an error, but this may indicate the results will not be as expected." That's all fine, but how do you actually return an error code from a script? I tried "sys.exit(1)", but that didn't work. Is there an example script shipped with Inkscape that returns an error? Many thanks for an answer, Gerrit

Inkscape sends print jobs with zero page size

Hi Inkscape devs, In the current Ubuntu 12.04 LTS release, when printing without print preview, Inkscape submits print jobs with zero sized media, causing print failure [1]. I have just subscribed the "Inkscape Bug Team"; is there anything else that needs doing to get the bug report into suitable shape? Many thanks! wiki administration

Hi Guys, We really need to do something with regards to the wiki making it harder to sign up spam accounts, we seem to be getting a couple of dozen of junk accounts a day, with most days having no new legit accounts. I dont want to stop people being able to sign up easily, but at the same time, the way we currently has it seems to be balanced all wrong. Who is it that has admin rights for stuff like wiki extensions and the base settings? Cheers John

layer styles?

I'm working on a technical drawing which is made up of a large number of objects, with a rather limited number of basic styles (this is common in engineering - drawings have layers with a different line style for each layer). So, I created a layer for each style: one layer for dashed lines, one layer for shapes with white fill and no stroke, etc. As it turned out, it was difficult to just draw all of the shapes of one style and then move to another, as they had to interact. So, as I was moving across the drawing and adding shapes, I had to continually set the style to match the current layer I was drawing in. What I really wanted was something like Photoshop's "layer style", Or layers in CAD drawings, where whatever you draw on a layer receives the same style. I was able to do this using the XML editor by copying and pasting the style attributes of existing shapes into the layer nodes, and unsetting the fill and stroke for new shapes. Whatever I drew after that received the layer style. Now my question is this: Is there a mechanism in place to do this without editing the XML? If not, do you think there should be? I think it would be useful.

pdf import again: poppler native vs. poppler cairo

Hello All, as the problem is still there I would propose following intermediate solution: currently in the codebasis there is also an pdf import via poppler-cairo. This one is disabled. I would like to enable this as an additional pdf import possibility. We have to decide later when it comes to the release which one to integrate into the release. so we can test in parallel the two options. we have a big tester basis (compared to separate launchpad branch) we get the possibility to switch to an tested poppler-internals independent solution (while using poppler) I there is no big NONO I will go forward and enable this within the next days. attached the patch that is needed for this (tested on windows, should work on Linux) regards, Adib.

0.47 support status

Just wondering what the official position is on the 0.47.x branch. A number of bug reports have been filed recently about build failures with recent versions of Glib, Poppler etc. At the moment, we list 0.47.x as being supported [1], but as far as I know, we have no plans to backport any fixes for the build failures, so it isn't actually usable on current linux distros. Rename 'Vacuum defs'

Is there a more user friendly way to describe the 'Vacuum defs' function ? How about we rename something like 'Document Cleanup' ? Maybe even a dialog with checkboxes and explanations of the various options: Cleanup and remove the following unused definitions from this document * Unused gradients * Unused color profiles * Unused patterns * Unused markers * Unused scripts * Unused clipping paths * Unused filters etc

libvisio is available

Hi, During this GSoC a LibreOffice student and her mentor implemented support for VSD, binary Microsoft Visio documents, that Microsoft never bothered to publish a specification on. The student managed to do far more that she expected and ended up with a nice C++ library for parsing VSD called libvisio that supports all geometric primitives, formatted text, embedded stencils, all kinds of fills and strokes etc. The long story is here: http://libregraphicsworld.org/articles.php?article_id=41 Now, the short story is that the libvisio library (currently at v0.0.7) has a tool called vsd2xhtml which converts VSD to SVG documents and embeds them into XHTML documents. So it looks like it's possible to write an extension for loading VSD directly to Inkscape. Otherwise you have to do some text editing to get an SVG out of that XHTML. Howevere there is a party trick involved. Since VSD files are often multipage, the convertor dumps every page into same XHTML file one by one. So if someone decides to have a go at it, I think it would rather be loader similar to our PDF loader which provides preview for letting a user to choose a page for importing. GtkObject stuff

Hi All, I've created a branch at lp:~inkscape.dev/inkscape/gtk_object_removal [1] in which I have started trying to rebase SPCanvasItem on GObject rather than GtkObject. I don't really know what I'm doing with Glib/GObject so I have made some (un)educated guesses about how to replace bits of the functionality! The code compiles and gets rid of a huge number of the remaining GTK+3 build errors, but there are major runtime issues (lots of crashes & Glib warnings). Please could someone who knows about Glib memory management take a look at this and give me a couple of pointers about what I'm doing wrong? Am I completely on the wrong track here? Regarding variable thickness lines

hi, I am new to inkscape development . I'm not sure I have all the definitions perfectly clear, but I'll try to explain my query as well as I can. Is this functionality already exist in inkspace i.e to create a line of variable width which would allow us drawing curves but where each node could have its width set so that the line width changed from node to node. I've also tried a couple of other vector graphics programs, such as Illustrator and Xara but this functionality doesn't exist. Thanks a lot -- Sharad

Pass original file path to script extension

Hello everyone, I'd like to reference external svg files in my document and process them via an extension. I know that Inkscape will not render them, but I am using an external call to the Apache Batik framework which can resolve external dependencies. The problem is, extensions are called on a temporary copy of the current document (usually in some temp folder), so all relative path references are broken. Is there any way to make an extension call on the original file, or somehow pass that file reference to the extension as a parameter? I only found this forum thread where people are guessing that this is not possible:http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1156 Does anyone of you devs know a workaround? Verb for swap fill and stroke?

Hi there. I thought it would be nice to add a verb to swap fill and stroke, but alas - I can't figure it out. I've pasted my feeble attempts below in case anyone has pointers. I barely dabble in C/C++ so I might be barking up the wrong tree entirely... Layer verbs

Hi all Anyone who knows what happened to the verbs SP_VERB_LAYER_TOGGLE_LOCK and SP_VERB_LAYER_TOGGLE_HIDE? They are defined at lines 2450-2454 in verbs.cpp but do not seem to be used anymore. Could they be deleted or is some other change needed here? Kind regards K.

New snap modes proposals

Here's a few snap modes that could be useful: 1. Snap to parallel If there are one or several angled guides around, any straight line you're drawing will snap to a direction parallel to the direction of those guides. It's like drawing paraxial lines, except not just constrained to horizontal and vertical lines. Useful if you need to draw a lot of diagonal lines for example. (by snapping, it means it will snap when the angle you're drawing approaches that angle. You won't be constrained to just drawing towards those directions) 2. Snap to orthogonal Same principle as the above, except in a direction orthogonal to existing guides. 3. Snap to node alignment When you're drawing an object with straight lines, any new point will snap to align to existing points of that line. I'm asking this because creating open-ended rectangles and more complicated straight-line shapes (examples: folder-like shape, thick U shape etc.) are a pain. Right now I have to either: - create several rectangles - align - combine - open up any extra segments Or: create nearly as many guides for snapping as the number of lines I want to draw (and then I have to delete them) Or: do a so-so job, open up the align dialogue and tediously align each group of nodes In fact, this snapping is the default behaviour I wish I'd have for paraxial drawing mode, but a snap mode should make a decent compromise for everyone. 4. Snap to guide point direction This one requires a guide point object first. When you're drawing a straight line, the line will snap in the direction of that point. Useful for perspective drawing, especially if the vanishing points are very far off from the drawing area.

IconWidget unused code?

Hi All, The code in src/ui/widget/icon-widget.[cpp,h] doesn't appear to be used anywhere. I searched for header inclusion, and use of the IconWidget class, and I don't see anything in trunk or 0.48.x. In fact, the C++ source looks rather like a placeholder file that was never completed. Can anyone shed some light on this? The file is contributing to the GTK+ 3 build failure, so if it's not used and not usable, am I OK to delete it? Thanks, AV

Grid and Guide UI

Is there a reason for the differences between the UI for Grid and Guides ? Currently: a) Guides are visually "on" by default - but there are no actual guides. Menu "View->Guides" initially does nothing - since there is no guide to show/hide. b) Grids are visually "off" by default. Menu "View->Grid" creates and shows a grid if there is no grid. c) Guides are created/deleted via the Edit menu d) Grids are created/deleted via the Document Properties dialog. Comments in the code refer to some sort of backwards compatibility // show guides if not specified, for backwards compatibility // hide guides if not specified, for backwards compatibility Propose to change the Guide UI to match the Grid UI as below. 1. Guides would be "off" by default (if not specified in the doc) 2. Toggling "View->Guides" would create guides (same as "Edit->Create Guides Around the page") if there is no existing guide. 3. Add a button : "Document Properties->Guides->Remove Guides" 4. Remove menu item : "Edit->Create Guides Around the page" 5. In general, this is the way that SVG is structured, so that is how Inkscape represents it as well. What you're basically asking for is the rendered version that flattens the stack. I'm not sure exactly what you need as the final output, but if you could get it from the renderer directly that might be a solution for you. I'm not that familiar with the renderer code as it's been updated heavily recently, but if you think it might be, reply to the list with your questions. If not, I'd recommend not going up the stack, but in fact down it and keeping the matrix transformations themselves in a stack. So then you effectively have a cache of last few matrices as you move down. Computing the entire stack for each object is much more costly. Good luck! Ted

Embedded inline graphics and SVG ?

I pick this up from the announcement of Xara Designer 8. This is a great feature but I don't know if this is compatible with svg. Freehand had it already a long time ago, and DTP programs like QuarkXPress also (but the later can also embed bitmap images on text lines, which is a must !) " Designer MX now allows you to embed 'inline graphics' in text using a simple Paste operation. Embedded graphics are great for really small items on the line such as symbols, icons etc, and are treated just like a 'character', in other words they flow and follow the same formatting rules as a character embedded in the text. libpoppler shenanigans

Hi, I had some issues when compiling current bzr against current libpoppler. I've attached a patch of modifications I made - I wouldn't apply it though: First item is that it seems like #define POPPLER_NEW_COLOR_SPACE_API isn't getting set in the configure script, and I don't have enough autotools-fu to figure out why. The test around line 20770 looks OK to me. So I crammed a define POPPLER_NEW_COLOR_SPACE_API 1 into pdf-parser.cpp (which is obviously the absolutely wrong thing to do). The next 57 changes are also in pdf-parser.cpp. It seems poppler's error() function now takes an additional first argument of type ErrorCategory [1]. I changed all error types to 'errInternal', since I'm guessing these aren't getting reported anywhere anyway. The final hack is that GfxFont no longer has a function 'getOrigName()'. It seems 'getName()' takes care of this now [2], so I removed that call from svg-builder.cpp. So, I doubt the patch is of any real value unless you're wanting to play around with current poppler on linux. On the upside, PDF import works just like in 0.48 with poppler shipped by Mint 12/Ubuntu Oneiric (0.16?).
