Export dialog, relative path patch

Hi, I've written some codethat makes the export dialog leave out the directory when exporting a drawing or an object, defaulting to just the png filename (patch attached). This is for two reasons: 1) Since the export path defaults to the SVG directory anyway, this will a) not change anyone's workflow, but b) will reduce work when you inevitably move your files around. If relative paths are an option, is there a good reason why they are not the default option? I suppose it's conceivable that people always export all pngs to a certain fixed folder that is nothing to do with the SVG directory, but then you have to type that in anyway, so this doesn't harm that use case at all. 2) I didn't even know that relative paths worked until about a week ago*, so I have to assume that at least some others don't know about it either. This patch helps to advertise to users that it is even possible, and saves them some work! If you accept this code, please look at it very carefully, I am just a novice at these things. Craig * I have manually updated the export path in this dialog when my files need to be moved (at least once per file, depending on that jobs status, which seems to be unavoidable in my workflow), I dont even want to think how many hours I've spent doing this unnecessarily.

Extension interface request

Hi, I'd like to make a couple of requests for features (or perhaps explanations/pointers to why they can't be included). 1) It would be really cool to have a proper directory selection (or popup directory chooser) as an option on the inkex dialog. This way the user doesn't have to memorise their favourite directories etc., they can browse to them, or use favourites, etc. 2) Someone on #inkscape mentioned that the filename/directory information was excluded from the SVG for security reasons, but this class of information is still freely included in the form of export hints. It's inconsistent for one, and inconvenient for another. I've just been developing an extension where it would have been much nicer to export the necessary files to the same directory by default. A possible workaround if 1) is ever implemented, would be to optionally default the directory chooser to the drawing's working directory, thereby bypassing the security problem. 3) Possibly related to 2. Whenever I export a document from inkscape, then move the file (I have a bunch of folders/hierarchies and the files move depending on various states), if I then need to export again, I have to tell it where to export to, and it's a bit of a pain, it would be nice for an option to always export to the working directory. Inscape crashes since installing v0.48 on WIN7

Hello, the following problem i have on AMD dual core 3000+ with windows7: since the installing of inkscape v.48 the "incscape-einstellungen" (in german) or shift+contrl+p leads to a complete crash. reinstalling on v.47 doesn't fix the problem. may you can follow the example an find the reason... greatings lars

I confirm that I've installed the dev libs（The latest version）. The file gtkmm-2.4.pc exist at all in C:\devlibs\lib\pkgconfig\ . So first of all, please confirm that you've installed the dev libs. Secondly, does the file gtkmm-2.4.pc exist at all in C:\devlibs\lib\pkgconfig\ ? Before running btool, did you run mingwenv.bat? LPE PowerStroke

Hi all, Because my GSoC student had no progress at the midterm evaluation deadline, I decided to fail him for GSoC. But since I was screaming so loud at LGM that this summer we would have a PowerStroke LPE, I couldn't escape coding it myself. Too bad, I should have applied for GSoC as a student myself... For those interested: I think the PowerStroke LPE is ready for some playing and testing. You have to build Inkscape 0.48+devel with experimental LPEs enabled. To see clearly what happens, you have to apply a stroke to the path, and no fill. I do not yet know whether I am going to take the effort to properly handle cusp nodes... ;) I know it is buggy, so please only mail *ideas* for improvement, etc. thanks! Johan [1] You have to build Inkscape with "#define LPE_ENABLE_TEST_EFFECTS", otherwise the LPE won't show in the LPE dialog. (uncommenting line 9 in src/live_effects/effect.cpp will do the trick)

To be able to help you we need more details. For example, which instructions did you follow? Have you read the wiki on inkscape.org? Have you installed the devlibs? If so, in which directory? It just happens that the vast majority of people want to run at the mention of "maths." :P You might as well replace everything with transformation matrices... If you want to reason in maths terms, in my proposal: - The Tiles tab corresponds to the current "x,y" coordinate approach - The Radial tab corresponds to a "radius, angle" coordinate approach What prompted me to this suggestion is that recently, I wanted to design a simple gear (but still a bit more complicated than what the LPE offers). I ended up doing the rotation manually because it was faster than opening a tutorial to find out what in the world rows and columns were supposed to do for rotations. I just wanted to duplicate the pattern exactly 6 times in a rotation. A lot of people would want to do that for simple designs such as flowers, clocks, round patterns etc., and they probably don't want to need a maths degree for something that basic. Good point about other options missing in the Cloned Tiles interface though. So right now, here's a recap on what me may find missing with the current interface: 1. Location: Move to Objects, add a shortcut, open a docker? 2. On-screen guideline. The default will be as currently, but if you select the object and either a straight line or a line with two segments, I'd like a drop-down to appear allowing you to choose it as the guideline for the transformations, so there's no need to resort to tricks to add spacing to tiling, to choose a centre of rotation, etc. 3. The ability to switch between % and absolute values. 4. Add skew. 5. An Easy, intuitive way to do radial clones. At the very least, add a button in the Rotation tab for "Rotate around centre", and maybe add a "Divide sphere by n" times so that people don't have to calculate the exact angle. Of course, people would want the ability to choose what that centre is, which is where the guideline comes in. An alternative approach would be to add a Radial Align option in the Align Tab. It'd rotate the clones several times around the centre of rotation. Anything else? I do believe that this is an area where an improvement in just the interface will provide very big returns to users.

Hello, all, My name's Mike, and I have been an avid Inkscape user for several years. For a year as a web designed I used Inkscape almost exclusively despite the fact that my station was equipped with Adobe Illustrator. I also love and support open source projects, so I figured the two fit. I'll spare the rest of my intro and get to the point. Recently Pi Mu Epsilon, a national mathematics honor society of which I am a member, announced a seal redesign contest to commemorate their centennial in 2014. Each chapter in the country could submit a design. This last month in Pittsburgh, at Mathfest, the four national semifinalists were unveiled, and mine, created entirely using Inkscape, was one of them. I have it attached as an SVGZ file. I wanted to share and offer it as a possible showcase addition. You will notice that I left many of my alternative design elements present in the file, but if you export the page at 300dpi you will see what I submitted to the contest. Thanks very much, Mike

Inkscape docs moved to Launchpad

Hi all, Inkscape's doc stuff (mainly tutorials po files) has just moved from the old Sourceforge svn to Launchpad. The project url is: https://launchpad.net/inkscape-docs. Feel free to use it if you need to report a bug or request (you can still use the translators list, of course!) The maintainer and driver of this project is the Inkscape Administrators group, and the trunk owner is the Inkscape Developers group. In order to get a local checkout of the files, please use the following command: # bzr checkout lp:inkscape-docs You can create a local branch instead, but I suggest that you use a checkout so that using it is as easy as is was with svn. Please refer to the wiki (http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Working_with_Bazaar) if you need some details about bazaar (just replace lp:inkscape with lp:inkscape-docs). Ask the guy who gave you the file to save it in an older version that Uniconvertor can manage or even better, in a format better suited for exchange (SVG or at least PDF). That's probably the same they would ask you if you send them a Corel Draw X5 file and they would have Corel X4. And, as a personal remark, I think it's more reasonable to ask closed source software to have good support of files that have open specifications than expecting free software to support closed source formats. ;-)

As far as I can remember, that problem was caused by a bug in the creation of thumbnails. If it's that, you can temporarily fix it by deleting the .thumbnails folder and de-activating thumbnail generation from nautilus preferences. Nautilus is pretty clumsy when it comes to thumbnail creation. Even in newer versions you'll find some problems with that (for instance, browsing a folder with SVG documents with several embedded images - the new inkscape's default - will freeze nautilus until thumbnails are ready, and file limits specified in the preferences don't seem to apply).

Congrats for Inkscape 0.48! I've tested the new features and the old ones, specially, searching for bugs. Great work. But bugs like this are still alive: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/365458 And this https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/486404 I know there's more serious bugs to solve, but these little glitches (that few cares about, I presume) are very bad for the user experience. It's like a costumer entering a new and shiny shop of broken/scratched products that a sharp eye customer won't buy, so he never returns. Hello everybody, probabely there are lots of thoughts on this, so I'd be grateful for some hints: I do have some very special wishes on inkscape developement: # Improving the Mac OS X integration # implement a routine which counts the number of objects surrounded by another object: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/621627 Esp. the first has hardly moved forward during the last year, since I've started watching it. Is there a way of funding a special developement, which obviously does not attract a lot of attention? Inkscape is free - alternatively I'd to pay 1000s of Euros for a "professional" product - with all its disacvantages. So I'd be happy to donate a number of Euros - and probabely some other people as well - to pay somebody to get special work done, which would not be done otherwise. Is there a mechanism for that? - Could there be one? - Maybe some young person would be interested to earn a small sum, learn and get experienced - and get some work done within a professional environment? - Or is that idea completely against the spirit of open source? Problem with Nautilus

Hi there, I am experiencing some troubles at opening .svg files. I was working with Inkscape for a month, and I found it pretty nice. The problems start yesterday. I was working on a .svg project and saved it to my desktop. Later I attempt to open it by cliking on the icon. The File Manager crashed out and froze my desktop. I worked for a while trying to fix the problem. Finally I opted for format the HD and start from zero. Again, today I experienced the same problem. I searched on internet and I found other people with the same problem, but without answers. Do you can give me a clue about how to solve this? Thaks Lucas

Inkscape 0.48 - Monday

Hey all, I just wanted to let everyone know that it appears that we have the core packages necessary for release. I have one major task left (screenshots), which I just need to refine text for. If people want to do a final pass on the release notes and pr text, it's more than welcome. I'm taking the day/night off from Inkscape stuff, but will wrap up tomorrow for an announcement on Monday. For those who might be wondering, weekday releases seem to get more coverage than weekend releases. It really seems like people hit up slashdot, reddit, digg, etc. more during the workweek rather than the weekend. Cheers, Josh

Gradient smoothness, dithering

Hi, I am currently doing a wallpaper in Inkscape, and I have noticed a strange thing about gradients : we can see the steps. Some other guys have also noticed this problem : http://inkscape-forum.andreas-s.net/topic/109624 (may 2007) The rendering is exactly the same in inkscape, png export and Firefox (and Chromium). I have tested in Safari (Mac), and it is fine (not 100% sure : fast test). Creating the same gradient with GIMP is fine : playing with brightness and contrast helps (contrast to ~110 and adjust brightness). See this picture : http://xinfe.free.fr/gradient.png After further investigation, I found out that when disabling the 'Dither' option, GIMP's result is exactly the same as Inkscape. So, is it possible to implement this feature for *.png exports (opt-in/out) ?
