Inkscape cannot open *.svgz (compressed Inkscape) through File -> Open (command-line works ok though)

Hi there, I noticed that Inkscape bails w/ an error message 'Failed to load the requested file <filename>.svgz' when trying to open a compressed Inkscape file through the GUI. However, it can still load the same file just fine if I pass it to inkscape through the command-line: $ # this works ok $ inkscape myfile.svgz ...when it errors out, I get the following error message on the command line: Entity: line 1: parser error : Start tag expected, '<' not found � ^ To reproduce: 1 - create a new file 2 - add a shape (I just did a simple red square) 3 - save as 'Compressed Inkscape SVG (*.svgz)' 4 - close and re-open inkscape GUI 5 - in the GUI, File -> Open <your saved file> // this will result in the error 6 - open same file through command-line // this will open ok I don't know how long this behavior has been around, I only started using compressed SVG's recently, but I see the behavior as far back as rev 20150.. I also keep rev 19967 handy (there seems to have been a performance regression since this build, when zooming in/out.. the canvas seems to refresh slower... but that's another matter altogether), and it suffers the same problem BOTH through the GUI and command-line. I'll try bisecting down to the neighbor revs that fixed the command-line opening problem when I get some time later on tomorrow. --Mike

Sebastien: You can work with inkscape's default units (px) and export your artwork at 90dpi from the png exporter and you'll get 1:1 conversion of vector pixels to raster pixels. The same applies to the image imports, inkscape will take the real pixels and place them on the work area using 90 dpi. Of course the feature that you're proposing is interesting and would be very helpful in several situations. This has been already discussed and if I remember correcly, there is a similar suggestion in the wishlist. Could you please check in the bug tracker if it has been already reported? If not, you can create a detailed feature request. Gez.

Grid snapping slowing down operations

Hello, I'm using Inkscape grids extensively and some operations like resizing a rectangle or drawing a line using the pen tool push my CPU to 100% for 10 to 30s. The grid setup I use it the following: - Pixels - Origin: x=0.0, y=-15.0 - Spacing: x=2.0, y=2.0 - Step: 10 lines And then snapping is turned on for nodes and snaps to paths, nodes and guides with a distance of 1. I've been experiencing these slowdowns on two Ubuntu machines, and the problem still shows with the latest realase (8.10). I'm running Inkscape 0.46, built Oct 24 2008. -- Sébastien

Hello, I'm doing UI design using Inkscape and it is important for me to be able to adjust the DPI on a per-document basis. In practice, I want to be able to adjust the number of pixels per inch (or cm) so that I can make UI wireframes bigger or smaller without losing the pixel-precision. -- Sébastien

Anyway, Eclipse already has the automatic build option you described. When I first tested it two years ago it didn't run very smoothly for large projects such as Inkscape, but things might have improved (at least my CPU has), so maybe I should try it again. [PATCH] Fixing strings when exporting to JavaFX files

Some exported codes couldn't compile in JavaFX due to spaces and minus signs on id labels. The sanatize function creates a new string with them replaced by underscores, solving the problem. Diff agains revision 20175.

A little PR for the Inkscape Docs team: We recently got our Inkscape Manual (the fruit of our Book Sprint) put on Lulu (http://www.lulu.com/content/4617381). You've probably seen the article by the Russian on the inkscape.org which has a link - if not, check it out! The published book, while being a reasonably finished work of good quality, is not comprehensive. We would like it to be more so. Here are some things that will help us to continue with this work: 1. Sales of the current version (somewhat limited 1st EDITION!!!!) on Lulu will help us afford a future Booksprint. 2. Contributions to the manual on our Floss Manuals workspace are greatly needed. Of course, as this needs some coordination, it's best to start on the inkscape-docs list (signup at lists.sourceforge.net) to find out where to begin. 3. Magical powers to generate whatever good thing we want without much effort. If you can help with any of these things, that would be GREAT! In particular, getting word out and posting the link to the Lulu store would be of great benefit. JF

Hello, I'm trying to get my build environment up and running under Vista and am running into a compiler error: src/display/nr-svgfonts.h:37: error: 'cairo_text_cluster_flags_t' has not been declared I'm using the command-line tools and I'm building against the most recent source from SVN. I got the most recent devlibs zip and mingw from http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32libs/. Does the devlibs archive have the correct cairo includes? Thanks! pete mcquain

Smooth transitions in Bézier paths

Hi, I hope you don't mind if I increase the traffic on inkscape-devel even more ;-) At some point an idea popped up to only snap to nodes at discontinuities in paths, and not to nodes at smooth transitions from one Bézier segment to another. This is more intuitive (less "Hey, what it is Inkscape snapping to now?") and might increase performance. Problem is that in the object-snapper I only have access to SPCurve, which is a wrapper for "old-style" NArtBpath. It's easy to find out whether a point is inbetween two Bézier segments, but how do I find out if a transition is smooth? I guess that should be done by comparing the control points, or is there an easier way? With the transition to lib2geom, will the NArtBpath be deprecated in favor of the Path class? (that would make this rather exercise useless in the long run). Any pointers would be appreciated here, Diederik

Somebody undid my changes to the files in src/bind/, so I'd like to discuss the doxygen convention used for files here. I already said about this in another thread but it wasn't too visible. A lot random crashes in recent SVN version

Note: Subject of this mail is not a complaint. I just wanted to bring this to focus. Here's the backtrace of one that looks like snapping related. I can repeat these crashes, but it happens mostly while dragging objects around and panning using middle mouse button. BTW, Looks like one needs to press middle mouse button absolutely still for some time in order to pan around. Also doesn't happen all the time, but when it does, that's the workaround. At least here. LPE on groups with shapes

Hi all, Did group LPE ever work on shapes in a group? I.e. I have a group with stars in it, then apply bendpath on the group. The SVG is correct, but Inkscape displays the stars unbent. 2geom update: new Rect and OptRect

Hi all, I just updated 2geom in our trunk. It contains the 'new' Rect and OptRect (and Interval and OptInterval). Geom::Rect can no longer be empty. It *always* contains a rectangle. Geom::OptRect contains a rect or nothing (which means an empty rect). The same holds for Geom::Interval and Geom::OptInterval. For example, boundingbox functions return an OptRect. You have to check whether it is empty or not, before you use the values in the Rect. If you didn't and turns out the bbox is empty, Inkscape will crash :-) Note that Rect's no longer have the method 'isEmpty'. Rect's do have the 'hasZeroArea' method. If this is true, the Rect contains a single point, like a (0,0)-(0,0) rectangle. It's not empty, it contains one point (0,0). (OptRect and OptInterval have the same usage as boost::optional<Rect>) I made Inkscape compile with this update, and tried to fix cases where there was not an explicit empty check. I may have introduced/uncovered bugs, sorry for that. Let us know about what you've found. Cheers, Johan

locking objects on canvas

hello! I create many objects on canvas without using of layers. Sometimes it is impossible to get any object. Inkscape has option allows us to lock object but this is very uncomfortable. Also that doesn't enable us to unlock particular object. Have you ever thought about adding new feature - locking/unlocking object on canvas like in Corel Draw? This is very cool stuff. It doesn't exclude functionality of layers but adds possibility of creating simple things in simple way. Think about icons. Many icons are created on one layer. But managing such objects in further future is terrible. I propose to add new entry to context menu. Clicking on it will show a small padlock on object (like in Corel). I hope that isn't hard to coding but makes sense in my opinion. I also hope I made myself clear. :) cheers, Wojtek Ryrych

Hi all, Just wanted to let people know that the build needs a couple of files tweaked for it to succeed: src/ui/dialog/input.cpp src/ui/dialog/tiledialog.cpp It's minor for both. They just need the lines added: #ifdef HAVE_CONFIG_H #include "config.h" #endif I would have done it myself, but when I svn upped to see if it had been fixed yet by somebody else, I got a fresh copy of verbs.h instead. .dxf input routine

Launchpad and "Fix Committed"

The current practice is to mark bugs "fix released" in Launchpad when committing to SVN. The rationale for this (given by bulia in another thread) is that this way the "open bugs" count is more useful for the developers. I think this is an abuse of Launchpad bug tracking. IMO the rationale isn't sufficient. It creates confusion for users which re-report bugs that have been fixed in SVN, because "fix released" bugs do not show up in search results. There must be a better way of tracking how many bugs have been fixed. Currently I know about advanced search (just search for all bugs with statuses New, Triaged, Confirmed, Incomplete, In Progress) and milestones which can isolate the most important bugs. Another option is to talk to the Launchpad team to include an "Unfixed" count on the bugs page which would exclude "fix committed" bugs. This will be better than abusing the system and confusing the users in the name of seeing some number. I really prefer the previous behavior of the snapping. Now it seems to work fine, but you don't get a visual feedback of the snapping until you release the mouse button. I think that it's questionable from the usability point of view. Snapping result should be visible before you release the mouse click, because the user wants to know if the snapping was successful before that, not after. In the previous versions, the shape was atracted to the snapping point when the pointer entered in the snapping threshold, so you could easily see the end result before releasing the mouse button. Now you can't and it feels like you have no control in the process. For instance, if you need to enlarge or shrink a rectangle beyond a guide and you have the snapping on, it is possible that you get the shape snapped to the guide even if you don't want to, and you'll realize that only after you released the mouse button (thinking that the shape wouldn't snap). Besides that, there are still isues when enlarging or shrinking shapes. Some snapping settings will make almost impossible to scale a shape without being atracted to a snapping point (making it go back to the original size or disappearing). I really don't know about the snapping code (in fact, I don't know anything about code) but it "feels" like there should be a "zone" around the mouse pointer to perform the snapping (and the snapping nodes should be aligned to that zone depending on the axis of the transformation to avoid random snapping) and the snapping should be visible before releasing the mouse button. At the end of the movement, right, but not after the mouse button release. IMO, the current behavior shows some improvements but also some regressions. Just my 2 cents. Gez.

Rendering test results on-line

If you go to: http://home.hccnet.nl/th.v.d.gronde/inkscape/ResultViewer.html you will now see an up-to-date list of test results for Inkscape's rendering tests. It now contains one column, each time I run the tests a column will be added (to the left). It's still pretty bare-bones, but I hope I (or someone else) will find some time to improve it in the near future. I plan to run the tests regularly for at least the next two months or so. I have to run the tests more or less manually though (I created a batch file to automate most steps, but I still have to run the batch file manually, on my notebook...), so I'm interested in any suggestions people might have for hosting (more) fully automated tests. You don't see any test for your favorite rendering bug? No problem, if the bug is already in the bug tracker with the required test files (read on), just mail me and I'll add it. If not, create an SVG demonstrating the problem (small and simple please) and one or more of the following: - A PNG of the wrong output. - A PNG of the right output (preferably exact). - An SVG that should look exactly the same, but is rendered correctly by Inkscape. Then attach the files to the corresponding bug in the bug tracker (or create a new bug and attach the files if it isn't the tracker yet) and mail me (or anyone else who has SVN access). Of course, if you have SVN access you can add tests yourself. I have to agree with Guillermo. While reading the discussion here I was very excieted about new imporvements, but after trying it I missed old behaviour where snapping occured _while_ dragging an object, not after releasing mouse button. It feels somehow more natural to see guidelines working in real time, and in most cases works faster (no waiting for delay or clicking object again because it was not snapped or snapped to wrong guideline). An option to set snapping delay to zero would be very useful for some users... and especially for me :)

Hi all, I added a proper constructor for nodepath that does nothing at the moment. It should be private, people should use sp_nodepath_new to create new nodepaths. However, this does not work: namespace Inkscape { namespace NodePath { class Path { private: Path() {}; friend Path * sp_nodepath_new (SPDesktop *, SPObject *, bool, const char *, SPItem *); ... }; } } Inkscape::NodePath::Path * sp_nodepath_new (SPDesktop * desktop, SPObject *object, bool show_handles, const char * repr_key = NULL, SPItem *item = NULL); This gives a compiler error when newing Path in sp_nodepath_new.
