Re commended reading and Netbeans configuration

Sorry to be the noob coming in blind asking the broadest questions. But I would like to try my hand at developing and need some guidance. Firstly, I haven't touched C++ code since before 2000 where I used Turbo C++ to write the simplest of cin cout programs. So whilst I haven't forgotten the concepts, the code I'm seeing is beyond me (I'm a PHP programmer). So can someone recommend some reading material? Preferable in print form. Secondly, I'm using NetBeans 6.5 to examine the code and at the moment it's hilighting a lot of errors because I haven't included the necessary folders for "Code Assistance". Should I include 'every' folder (and possibly sub folder) in /devlibs/include? Are there other folders that might help to include? Thirdly, do you use "btool" in place of when you would otherwise specify "make" in an IDE? I don't really understand "btool"--I assume it makes it easier to build Inkscape than running MinGW directly? I'm not sure if I should favor using the MinGW compiler when Netbeans has support for it, especially for debugging? broken .wmf import in inkscape 0.46?

Hi again, another problem I'm having is that wmf import seems to be broken in inkscape 0.46 (both on CentOS 5.2 and F9). The same wmfs are working fine in Inkscape 0.45 (tested on CentOS 5.2). This is very annoying because wmf used to be a good file format for exchange with commercial Windows application, such as ChemDraw and others. inkscape, psfrag and type 1 fonts

Hi everybody, I got a strange problem with inkscape, psfrag and eps. The situation: I am using psfrag to replace text (with counters, but that doesn't really matter) from Inkscape-eps-figures during latex compiler runs. The problem is that it works only if the embed type 1 font option in Inkscapes eps-export is deselected (export text as paths is deselected too). But unfortunately then all the text appears as a sort of a typewriter font (so the installed type1-fonts are not used?). If I activate the embed fonts feature the replacements seem to be made for the .dvi that is produced by latex, but in the final .eps or .pdf the to-be-replaced text strings show up again. Any Ideas how this issue can be avoided? The system is a Fedora 9 Linux box with all the updates so far (Inkscape 0.46, Texlive 2007). best regards jan

Loss of precision for grids in millimeters

Hi, I've a case of quirkiness: I set a grid in mm and the X spacing is set to 0.3761mm. On the canvas, there is a visible difference between 0.3761 and 0.376 but when i close and reopen the file the value is cut to 0.376mm. I thought there was some conversion of mm->px and that the stored value was in px, but opening the SVG in a text editor reveals the value stored is 0.376 and the unit is mm. So i wonder why it is possible to store a value in px with 4-decimal precision but not so in mm. For some reason is not possible to store 4 decimals for millimeters... I can set values with 4 decimals in px or " just right --i've another grid set to 0.0625in (1/16 of an inch) without problem. Is there a conversion somewhere -which I'm unaware of- cutting the last decimal? Should I resort to doing the conversion from mm to px to achieve more precision? Best regards.

Possible fix for color chooser bug, #257685

I don't know if anyone has worked on #257685 yet. I gave it a quick look and maybe the fix is very simple. Apparently with Gtk2.13 and greater, Gtk is enforcing the page size and steps, which seems to be the root of the problem where the sliders can only max out to 245 rather than 255. If [0..255] were a document, 245 would be the bottom of the last page, so the adjustment widget is operating correctly. According to the Gtk notes, setting page sizes and steps to 0 for simple adjusters might be the best way to fix this. In src/widgets/sp-color-slider.cpp, line 332, this little modification seems to fix the problem: if (!adjustment) { adjustment = (GtkAdjustment *) gtk_adjustment_new (0.0, 0.0, 1.0, 0.01, 0.0, 0.0); } //in case of existing adjustment gtk_adjustment_set_page_increment(adjustment, 0.0); gtk_adjustment_set_page_size(adjustment, 0.0); Maybe someone with knowledge of the older SP-vintage widgets can decide if this is a valid fix or is merely fixing the symptom? FW: active_desktop removals

Hi all, Max found something that is important to know. Apparently, gcc accepts "false" as a value for a pointer. So it is possible to write: test_function(Test *t) ... test_function(false); without triggering a compiler warning/error. This hid a problem after refactoring a function method, resulting in a crash. Inkscape Releases

Hey All! Since I was a release warden for 0.46 and will be the one moving forward for 0.47 as well I'd like to touch base. First, it seems like patches intended for 0.46.1 have died down submission-wise. I plan on beginning to get caught up on Launchpad with regard to those in an effort to move things forward with it. Does anyone have any requests or things to comment on with this? Second, is it wrong to assume that we won't be shooting for 0.47 this year? I'm definitely not pushing for it. I'd rather see everything get nicely polished... besides I almost never use release versions except for bug testing. ;) Cheers, Josh

New devlibs stuff

People using the win32 devlibs will probably want to svn up, to get the new Gtk libs. I believe that this is the version that was needed for the printing fix. I started a new build on the server to see if we get lucky and the autobuild works ok. It compiled and runs fine on my laptop here. bob

Hello, The latest win32 build from modevia: http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32/Inkscape19808-0809060128.7z crashes when you try to import either a jpg or a gif file. A png is imported fine. OS: Windows 2000 SP4 Steps to reproduce: - Launch Inkscape (create a new empty document) - Select Import from the menu - The standard Windows dialog opens - Click on a jpg or gif file name Result: Message. Runtime error, Inkscape encountered an error and will now close (or something) Crash. If you already have an open document opened with stuff in it, the import dialog doesn't make Inkscape crash, but it does nothing.

Max value for colors < 255

Hi, I have GTK+ 2.13.6, and had problems compiling Inkscape 0.46, until I found this patch http://launchpadlibrarian.net/15113774/gtk-clist.patch. Inkscape compiled pretty well, but now the color values are gone wild :-P I can't raise any of the color components more than 245. Even the default colors (in the color bar) are semi transparents (the alpha channel is at 245). I can write the HTML color "FF0000FF", and then the drawing turns solid red. But in the "fill and border" pannel, the values are at 245 (for red and alpha). If I try to change one of those values, they return to theier "correct" values (254), the image turns transparent again, and the HTML color shows "F50000F5". Microsoft Expression uses a profile shape method that is just like what Bulia suggested. The width equals the path length and the nodes along the profile shape equal the distance away from the centerline for the brush object's width. The LPE could be given three pieces of information... bottom most item is the stroke path, then brush object and then the profile path. Could something like Microsoft's Expression live vector brush effects be created for Inkscape's LPE? If you have not seen what it does, Expression allows you to create a path and stroke the path using another object where the width of the stroke along the path is based on an contour path (think XY chart) where the width (X) is the location along the path to be stroked and the height (Y) is the width of the stroke at the point along the path. Ideally, the stroke object could be made up of multiple paths with various characteristics. For instance, you could create a stroke object that mimics a water color brush stroke. - Tony

Sorry for posting here if the user list if better. And sorry about the subject if it has been talked about before. I couldn't get sourceforge to add me to the inkscape user mail list and sourceforge was timing out on all my archive searches with no results. --- I remember reading that there was a patch or something to inkscape to support wishblade and robocraft users. Has that been integrated into the inkscape application? Is that what the DXF is all about? Wishblade users can not use DXF directly (needing the robocraft software to import DXF and change it to some sort of native (and maybe proprietary) GSD). Is there a way to get inkscape to save images in GSD in order to simplify the process? Ideally, I would prefer to skip bringing up the wishblade application. In my set up, I do all my work in linux (GIMP/INKSCAPE) and only the plotting in Windows. If I could do everything in linux it would simplify the flow of work greatly. Has anyone figured out how the craftrobo is communicated to in order to use it with common open source linux plotting software? Better yet, has anyone figured out how the wishblade has been crippled in order to use it with common open source linux plotting software? ...thanks

sorting out PS/EPS/PDF export mess

It's always bad when the UI offers two ways to do the same thing without really explaining what's the difference. It's equally bad when UI uses some meaningless techno jargon such as "cairo" :) Unfortunately 0.46 was released still in the middle of a transition period which made both these evils inevitable. Now that we're in 0.47, however, I would like to address this issue by switching all of PS, EPS, and PDF output to cairo, removing the builtin Inkscape exporter, and purging the mentions of "cairo" from the UI. As a matter of fact, this has already partially happened (not sure who did this). Right now both PS export options work via cairo and produce identical output. The Inkscape-native PDF export is nowhere to be seen. The only exporter which still uses native code is EPS. However, since 1.5.2 cairo can produce EPS files too, so this can all be done in one place now (closng several EPS export bugs along the way). The only downside is that it will require cairo >= 1.5.2, is everyone OK with that? By the way, the latest cairo 1.5.12 finally fixes the bug where zooming in too closely in Outline mode produced messy broken lines. Now everything is neat and clean. LPE tool

Hi, Honestly, I'm as much happy as much puzzled about the new tool called LPE tool. All across source code it is called an LPE tool, which probably means it's supposed to do editing of LPE params on canvas or draw LPE. It does both, but is restricted to geometric constructions only (and not all of them), which is why it probably has a "Create geometry constructions" tooltip. So the question is conceptual: is it supposed to do more than it does now and cover all possible LPEs or is it only geometry constructions related? Alexandre

hi! In latest revisions a new LPE effect appeared - Lattice deformation. But it hasn't been working properly these days. I propose to create a new tool - exactly Lattice deformation. This tool (idea) is in Adobe Photoshop. This tool would be very helpful. Currently we can bend a shape in a few way, but only in one direction. This tool would enable to bend the shape in many directions. GSoC mentor (Ted Gould) not responding!

I sent my mentor (Ted Gould) two reminders for filling in the final mentor evaluation (one on Aug. 22 and one last friday) and it seems he hasn't started the evaluation yet. And I also haven't heard from him. I did get a reply to a (much) earlier message on the 24th stating that he had some e-mail trouble. So I suspect that he might simply not have received the reminders. Is there anyone who can contact him directly? Or perhaps the project administrator can do something? Jasper van de Gronde

When I am working with this tool you accustom I am confused and I believe that it would be necessary to identify the aim of each effect, in my case I have put a mark of black color in the end, also is possible to put icons to hide these effects, to block and to erase.
