why are circles often represented as two arcs

As per the subject line I often notice that what comes out of inkscape and other svg capable editors uses paths to represent circles and other simple shapes. I suppose this is for some reason of code optimization (i.e code optimization in the editor not in the output SVG). Can anyone shed any light on this? Mvh, Bryan Rasmussen

forum rules and guidelines

Hi Friends, As the new forum is rapidly being finished, it's probably a good time to formalize the rules and guidelines for it. If anyone is interested in helping to draft this document or documents, please reply here. Once we have a group, we'll decide exactly how we want to handle this. When we started on this a couple of years ago, we used FramaPad, which allows users to edit documents live. I found it had the basic features that we needed. Or I think there are other similar types of sites. Although I'd be just as happy to be more old school, and exchange ODT or DOC files. But we can decide as a group. There aren't really any requirements to participate. Just care about the forum and how it functions :-) All best, brynn

Font chooser GtkAction migration

Hi Tav and devs, I'm currently looking into getting rid of the deprecated GtkAction usage in the TextToolbar. It seems that the only sticking point is the use of the Ink_ComboBoxEntry_Action widget to select fonts. It should be OK to migrate this to a Gtk::ToolItem, but before I do that, I just wondered if we had considered using the standard GtkFontButton ( https://developer.gnome.org/gtk3/stable/GtkFontButton.html)? This would provide a summary of the font face and size, but would pop-up a font-chooser dialog ( https://developer.gnome.org/gtkmm-tutorial/stable/sec-font-chooser-dialog.h…) rather than providing an entry in a combobox. This could result in a less cluttered toolbar, but I suspect there might be some "clever things" going on in our font support, and I don't want to break anything without asking! Any thoughts? AV

Hi, My colleague posted on https://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/index.php?topic=1517.msg10076#msg10076 because we noticed our automatic packaging system isn’t getting the newest Inkscape anymore. Then we noticed that you are searching for a developer who can build DMG files and run CI-Jobs. Maybe we can help you out with this, as we have some old Mac mini which could run a ci-runner for gitlab. Do you have any documentation how builds were made until 0.92.2? Do you actually build all release versions using a CI/CD Pipeline? Actually we do not have c/c++ knowledge, so we can only help you out with infrastructure. Cheers, Christoph

[RFC] for all users of perl extensions on Windows - perl vs. wperl

Hi all, we're currently considering to change the default interpreter executable for perl extensions on Windows from "perl.exe" to "wperl.exe", see [1]. In case any developers/users of perl extensions on Windows are reading this, please let us know if this is a change you'd welcome or if this has the potential to break your extension / current setup. For everybody unaware of the difference between perl and wperl: On Windows there's a fundamental distinction between console applications and "GUI" applications. The former are always attached to a console window and will start one if necessary (i.e. you'd see a console window pop up while running the extension), which is also the case for "perl.exe". "wperl.exe" on the other hand is compiled as a "GUI" application and doesn't require a console. The downside is that "wperl" only exists on Windows (there's no such distinction on other OSs) and might not even be available in some perl distributions. In any case the interpreter executable can always be customized as described in the Wiki article [2], so you'll always be able to set the interpreter of your choice. This also allows you to test this change ahead of time and give feedback. Website Confusion

Dear Developers, This is an interesting brand confusion issue that I want to bring up. Users who visit the Inkscape website exhibit sometimes some key confusions which I'm not entirely sure how to fix: 1. That Inkscape requires them to register for an account in order to download. This is not true, but users have been trained by proprietary service vendors to register accounts for everything to get access. Help requests from users who forget their password or can't activate their accounts indicate that they only wanted to download Inkscape. 2. That the gallery on the website /is inkscape/, this is a much rarer problem. But sometimes people upload things to the Inkscape gallery in order to somehow get the website to perform actions or 'use' Inkscape via a web interface. This is likely because many users are trained to think of apps as websites and the website offers some abilities which could be confused for entry points into Inkscape functionality. This presents as moderation flags, usually people uploading photos and asking why Inkscape can't be accessed. These are issues that may get worse as more and more people get computers which are not-desktops. Phones, tables, whatever chromebooks are. And I can imagine there might be some simple changes to help direct people more. Thoughts? Best Regards, Martin Owens

Issue tracking for Inkscape moves to Gitlab

Hi all, As of this week, the Inkscape project is shifting to Gitlab for issue tracking in place of Launchpad. https://gitlab.com/groups/inkscape/-/issues We've been using Gitlab for our code hosting and other purposes for a year and a half now[1], and have found it to be reliable and convenient. We didn't migrate Issue Tracking until now, so we could take time to make sure we had a plan: 1. Going forward, new bug reports should be filed only in Gitlab. 2. Launchpad will remain available as a historical archive of our bug reports. Filing bugs there will remain possible for now, but discouraged. 3. Bugs in Launchpad that are still reproducible in Inkscape 0.92.4 or newer can be re-filed on Gitlab and closed on Launchpad. We are planning efforts to help organize the migration work and keep track of progress. More info on this will be coming soon. Eventually, when the necessary bugs have been migrated, bug reporting in Launchpad will be shut off. We're enthused about this change, and hope you too will find gitlab a more user friendly way to report issues, and we'd love your help triaging and solving Inkscape bugs. Heya Alex, I looked into this myself, the situation turned out to be a dependency issue with libpng that is particular only to Xenial, and only occurring on the trunk-daily PPA builds. Essentially, trunk needs libpng16 now but it has libpng12, and other stuff breaks if we try and force libpng16. We ended up just deciding that since Xenial is old, probably not worth the trouble to keep it active in the PPA, so I dropped it from the PPA. I got all the other PPA builds up to date. The stable PPA is updated to the 0.92.4 tag, and the stable-daily PPA had an invalid recipe so I fixed that too. Everything seems happily building packages. Build configuration for activation of path effect Fillet/Chamfer

Hi there, I would like to compile Inkscape in a way so that I can use the Fillet/Chamfer path effect. I got Inkscape compiled under a msys2 environment under windows 10 with the macro WITH_MODULES enabled, but I still cannot find the path effect in the list in the gui interface. As a codebase I use the source code from the gitlab repo and the branch 0.92.x. Am I missing something? I furthermore have not found the given macro in the source code (only one #ifdef in inkview.cpp which seems somewhat related). I would expect some constructs like: #ifdef WITH_MODULES /* some code */ #endif Is this the correct macro to define for this use case? I am not totally sure that I did the build configuration correctly. It seems that the macro definition is supposed to more or less add steps to the build configuration. If you have a critical (and well-tested) bugfix it might be ok, but just check with me first before landing it. Bug reporting tutorial for Inkscape 1.0 Alpha

So, I'm trying to make a video for ongoing bug reporting for Inkscape in GitLab. However, there is no page https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/issues, which I assume is where we want most of the bugs reported, correct? The best I could do at the moment is do a tutorial for how to report an issue in the extensions sub-section: https://gitlab.com/inkscape/extensions/issues And that's because there's a big green button that says "New Issue" in the upper right corner. Is it that we have not added all the sub-sections of the project yet? Can someone add those sections so I can work them into the tutorial? (I'd do it but I'm bound to do it wrong). Let me know. In the meantime, I'm making the animation bits, in hopes of having the video ready by the 16th release of 1.0 Alpha. Thanks for the help! -C
