Hi there, Christoph has asked me to forward his message, as it didn't get through: -------- Weitergeleitete Nachricht -------- Betreff: HLC-Farbatlas Datum: Wed, 7 Feb 2018 06:32:39 +0100 Hi all, After a year of hard work freieFarbe/freeColour is pleased to announce the completion of its first major project, the "HLC Colour Atlas", which is a truly open colour system based on mathematics and unrestricted by copyrights or trademarks. It has been created by colour professionals from Germany and Switzerland. The atlas comprises the following elements: - a printed reference (A4, ring binder) of 2040 colours, based on the intuitive HLC colour model (Hue, Lightness, Chroma), with increments of 10 between each hue. It also includes colours that can't be reproduced in regular CMYK workflows (spot colours). Unlike commercial products, its colour precision is extremely high, with a DeltaE00 of 0.5, i.e. colour differences between two copies of the atlas can only be measured but not perceived, even by a trained eye. Each atlas is being produced with a Fogra-certified high-end proof printer on Fogra-certified paper by a Fogra-certified company. Each copy is also being shipped with a production record (ISO 12647-7:2016); - a printed introduction and usage instructions in German and English; - colour palettes with LAB values for Adobe software (ASE format) and in Swatchbooker's SBZ format, as well as sRGB versions for LibreOffice (SOC), GIMP (GPL) and Scribus 1.4.x (XML). Please note that Scribus 1.5.x already includes the SBZ file, and an sRGB version is being shipped with LibreOffice since version 5.4.x, as well as the current officially stable Scribus 1.4.6. - A PDF master file of the atlas with layers for different output targets (e.g. sRGB, ISOCoatedV2); - XSLX files with colour conversion tables and QC report; - a CxF v.3 file which includes the colour data in spectral values. All files are available for download here: https://www.freiefarbe.de/thema-farbe/software/ The latter is important, because we want to enable others to create their own reliable references without having to ask for permission or paying licence fees. Thus, an ink manufacturer can simply load the CxF file into its formulation software and create the correct mix for his particular inks. Manufacturers of other colourants (e.g. paint, textile colours or plastics) can do the same, provided their software is supporting CxF, which is an open standard. This is also the reason for us not to publish any mixing recipes, because all necessary data to reliably recreate a colour are in the CxF file, so the recipes can be created and customised by software. Whilst the digital files are available for free download under a CC licence, the printed reference needs to be paid for, because production and certification are quite labour-intensive (introductory offer: EUR 99.-- until 31 March 2018, later: EUR 149.-- plus VAT and shipment costs; see: https://shop.proof.de/index.php?language=en). freieFarbe/freeColour are convinced that the "HLC Colour Atlas" is not only a true and open alternative to Pantone, HKS etc., but we also think that the very high quality standard of our printed reference will be hard to match. Our next step is to fill in the necessary paperwork to make this open colour system a DIN SPEC with the German industrial standards organisation DIN (April/May 2018). From there it will hopefully be moved on to ISO to make it an international standard (time frame unknown). Special credits go to Matthias Betz, Holger Everding, Jan-Peter Homann and Eric A. Soder, who did all the heavy lifting, as well as Gregory Pittman, who wrote a Scribus script that reduced the creation of the print PDF for the Atlas to a matter of seconds. freieFarbe/freeColour is also grateful to ColorLogic GmbH, Epson Deutschland GmbH and GMG GmbH & Co KG for generous technical support. 0.92.3 Release Planning Meeting ~ Feb 2nd

After the last board meeting we discussed maybe starting 0.92.3 in Feb. I'd like to hold a kickoff meeting following this Friday's board meeting to get started. Hopefully this should be a straightforward release but worthwhile to touch base with everyone just in case. For this meeting I want to just get a handle on the status of everything and flag tasks needing done. I'd like to also get a rough timeline figured out. Date: Fri, 2nd Feb, 2018. inkscape-docs has a new home

Hi all, I'm happy to announce that the former "inkscape-docs" (i.e. manpages, keys and mouse reference and tutorials) has a new home! You can now find the "Inkscape Documentation" at https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape-docs/documentation After migrating the repo to GitLab some time ago I finally got around and tweaked some last bits, so it's now in a production-ready state again. Obviously there's still a lot to do (on my short list: getting updated docs onto the website and make translation statistics work again, preferably using some CI automation) but I think the repo is at a point were contributions should be possible without too much effort again and I'd appreciate any help in getting it updated in time for the 0.92.3 release! Boolean Operation LPE Question

Hi everybody on the mailing list, I have noticed on a inkscape development build that there doesn't seem to be a easy way to use boolean operation LPE. Copy and pasting, and pressing the button doesn't seem to work. Right now, I don't believe this is a bug as I'm thinking that it's a work in progress and thus no need to treat it as a bug, but I could be wrong. Is this a work in progress? Thanks, Miguel Lopez.

numpy: include, give warning or ...?

Hi there, the .deb packages for Ubuntu do not seem to include a dependency for numpy, but the gcodetools depend on it. It's included in the snap, and also seems to be present for Windows and macOS versions. Some other extensions give warnings when it's missing (measure, perspective, dxf_outline,...) So, my question is: Should the gcodetools also just output a warning message with install instructions, like the other extensions do, because there's a reason why numpy cannot be made a dependency? Or could numpy be made a dependency? (I guess that's more a question to packagers - do we make any recommendations anywhere? Or do they need to figure it all out by themselves?) Maren

credentials repo moved to new location

Just a quick note that the credentials repository has been moved, as discussed last board meeting. When we switched from bzr to git, the credentials repository was moved over as a branch of the inkscape codebase. Apart from being awkward it also made it very slow to download (since it was downloading the entirety of the inkscape code history, only to replace all the code with the credentials stuff...) Anyway, I exported the git history and imported it as a new project, which will live here in its new permanent location: https://gitlab.com/inkscape/infra/credentials I've also made this private to logged in Inkscape project team members only. No one outside our project should really need this so I think that is appropriate. Let me know if you run into problems, and I can adjust permissions and things to improve convenience. (You'll also notice I'm putting project internal service-ish stuff like this into a subcategory 'infra'. As we go through updating mailing lists, wiki, forums and other such things we can use this to collect random bits and pieces like service configs here.) Bryce

Sticker drama

Okay, so I made the mistake of paying a sticker printing company before I got a proof. I did this because usually printers are trustworthy enough to A) give a good proof, B) Accept changes needed, or C) refund if they can't (or in this case, just won't) do what you want). I'm sorry to say that discountsticekrprinting.co.uk can't handle any of these things. So I've learned a valuable lesson - never pay before proof. Since I can't seem to get my money back from them due to their customer-hostile purchase agreement, I'm going to have to get substantially larger stickers from them to compensate for their incompetence. - Something that will not look silly with a 3mm gap shoe-horned into the space around the graphic on the sticker. My questions are these: 1. How big would you like to see? 2. How big is useful or tolerable? :) 3. How big is "way too big" The choices are: 60mm, 80mm, 100mm Part of me wants to go like HUGE (100mm), because maybe we could sell them for a few bucks each to recoup sticker costs - maybe people would like to slap one on a CPU case or a skateboard or bumper of a car or something. I'm going with some other company for the 40mm silver stickers, since they look absolutely silly with an enforced 3mm gap around the edge - None of the other companies I've gotten quotes from are willing to inflict that nonsense on their customers. Any thoughts? Thanks. -C

I want to know how simple it would be to disable the GUI and mouse cursor on hot key press to draw directly to screen for Desktop cam live animations. Also want to set move group functionality to wasd , arrow keys or numpad to control 3 things at once. Or use mouse to move and possible mouse wheel to zoom or snap to splines pathings and mouse wheel tweening. Any ideas on how much work this feature would be? Turning off gitlab's "Allow users to request access"?

There's a setting "Allow users to request access" on our Inkscape main group (https://gitlab.com/inkscape). I'd like to switch it to 'off'. Are there any objections if I did this? This setting adds a button to our website for logged in users to push to send an email to our admins asking for membership to the inkscape main group. The effect of this gives them commit access on the inkscape repo (and I suspect maybe other git repos in subgroups; I'm not sure how the permissions propagate.) This was useful initially when everyone was needing gitlab access, but I think all the existing committers that want it have it. These days the requests we're getting are mostly from people with no registered activity related to Inkscape; we've been getting a handful of these invalid requests each month. Maybe they're clicking it on accident, or thinking that it's an affiliation mark, and not realizing that it gives full commit rights if granted. Turning it off simply removes the button, it wouldn't mean any change to our existing policies regarding earning of commit rights - applicants still need to get two patches reviewed, accepted, and landed and then contact one of the administrators to request access. (If we want to make this simpler later on, maybe one day we can rig up a form where they can enter the SHAs of their two patches.) Bryce

Thinking of doing another set of medallions for the Boston and LGM hackfests. My questions: 1. Do people like the metal / engraved ones, or would stickers be better? 2. Do people like them personalised like last year, or would you rather just have generic ones that all attendees get? 3. Do we want another order of (slightly larger) generic inkscape stickers to hand out at these events (especially LGM seems like a great place to hand them out). 4. Anything else?

how to update an Inkscape repository

about 6 months ago I created a fork of the inkscape code at: https://gitlab.com/alvinpenner/inkscape 1. now that is obsolete, and I would like to sync it with current Inkscape to bring it uptodate. Is there a button for this? 2. alternatively, I would like to delete the repository and start over. Can I delete it? 3. also, the original Fork button that I used appears to be gone, is it still possible to fork code? sorry about the numerous questions, but I just spent 2 hours searching for these things and cannot find them, the gitlab website seems to have been redesigned since I last used it. Hackfests 2018

Hi All, We will are planning two hackfests in the next few months. The first will be in Boston March 26th through 30th. This is our main hackfest for the year. It will take place at the RedHat office at 300 A Street (easily accessible by pubic transport). A formal vote by the Inkscape board to fund travel to this hackfest has not yet taken place but it is envisioned that travel support will be the same as for last years Paris hackfest. A second mini-hackfest is tentatively planned be held in conjunction with the LGM meeting in Seville, Spain April 26th through April 30th. Details are still to be worked out. Google may be providing some support for travel to LGM. They are interested in adding Variable Font support to Inkscape. The Inkscape board has discussed funding travel for Inkscape developers to this hackfest up to a limit of half that for the main hackfest. Inkscape is SVG

Hello Inkscape-makers, I found this ammusing, while searching for "CM350 brother inkscape" in google, google sometimes searches for synonymous terms. In this search is adds 'SVG' as a synonym for Inkscape. So google things Inkscape IS the same thing as SVG. That's a super cool position to be in, in an odd kind of way. Because it says that googles black box thinks that the pinnacle of SVG, the exemplar, the practical reference for the standard IS Inkscape. OK, back to work. :-) hope everyone had a good new year.
