Hey again I was wondering if there was any quick guide to development with inkscape I have read http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/DeveloperManual however I was looking for more of a quick guide to compliation of the seperate files / linking etc Currently, reasonably new to c++, especially on a project this big, I am just running make while making small changes to individual files, it works, but incredibly time consuming, so was wondering if there was a way of compiling / linking individual source files, without recompiling the entire modules it resides within if anyone could give me a quick overview of their process while developing small changes I could figure out the details and probably post a beginners guide on the wiki Thanks Dale

0.43: make: wcstoimax() invalid conversion

Make fails for me building Inkscape-0.43. A full transcript of the log is below. The problem seems to be a series of invalid conversions from __gw<blah> to w<blah> in <inttypes.h>. The issue being this vocabulary is quite specialized (luthiers, string instrument manufacturers...) and I'd like not to commit to many mistakes. It's not a problem : I've already faced this with the typographic (remember, kerning...) vocabulary. And the issues have been solved with the help of some Inkscape developppers a good dictionnary... and some French typographs that have been kind enough to provide some "live explanations". -> I'll have to follow the same process here for this vocabulary. Much needed. Other point : some strings are not translatable at the moment. Even if they are correctly marked in the code (Document properties, Document metadata....) they have not been embedded in the po files. Non exhaustive list : File menu : Document properties, Document metadata, Edit menu : Tile Clones View menu/show-hide : Panels Effects menu : Blur Edge, Enhance Path, Extract One Image, Render The complete Document Properties dialog ... new cursors problem

The new cursors recently committed by Scislac don't work for me on win2k. icon prerendering debug output

Can we PLEASE turn these off already? Haven't the authors collected all the data they needed from it, by now? It's SO annoying. As a general rule, please avoid adding debug output unless you have a genuine purpose of collecting information from all developers and svn users, and even in that case, please don't forget to remove it soon enough. -- bulia byak Inkscape. connector layout

Hi All, I recently added the "rectangle overlap removal" algorithm to inkscape and received so much useful feedback (advice, testing and so on) throughout the process that I'm now quite keen to start another project. The connector stuff that was introduced in 0.43 is a really powerful concept and makes inkscape much more of a "diagramming" tool. Between the connector routing and the overlap removal stuff we have the basics of some nice automatic diagram layout. I'd like to continue this by incorporating some "graph layout" algorithms to adjust the positions of objects at the end of connectors to achieve things like minimal crossing of connectors and to better show coupling and cohesion in the network (graph) defined by the connectors. I'd appreciate any feedback people have on this idea. Also, I'd really like to use the boost 'graph' libraries to get this happening quickly. Boost already has some basic layout algorithms which we can use right away, but I'll also need the underlying graph data-structures and algorithms in boost to implement new algorithms. What are the logistics of adding boost to the inkscape dependency tree? I've noticed similar requests for boost in the inkscape-devel archives... it seems like I'm not the only one who would benefit. recent commits: purged includes

ello, in the last days, of about 5500 include lines, over 2200 were removed by a simple program that, for every include, tried to compile the source without it. After a first run, problems were identified and handled by removing overgenerous includes from the most important headers. Also, the problem of non-indented ifdefed includes turned up and needed manual intervention. For this reason, it is possible that compilation in some cases barfs because of overzealous removing. Another annoying tidbit is the removal of non-indented includes of config.h. The about two dozen cases will be rewritten the next days and should not affect compilation in most cases. Finally, some includes were removed of the respective header belonging to the source file. This does not affect compilation at all but might annoy some people writing in the source later on. Please bear with the side effects. I firmly believe that they are worth it all. A log file of the removal is available on request. All in all, a 1.5 GHz computer with 2.5" hard disk needed 12 hours full work for it. Thanks for your patience, ralf

hi i have some trouble getting this to work.. when i want to build setup.py i get the following error: Traceback (most recent call last): File "setup.py", line 127, in ? config_h_vars = parse_config_h(open(config_h)) IOError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.3/include/python2.3/pyconfig.h' i have no idea how to go on from that... am I missing something else? there is no /include-Folder @ ../System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.3/ and i don't have pyconfig.h in the python2.3 - folder (which is @ ..Versions/2.3/lib/) ..if this info is of any help.. thanks for any help manuel

SCALE Booth

Okay, we have a booth, now what do we want to do with it? First off, who's coming? I've got me, John Taber and Jon Cruz. Jon Phillips? Bryce, I know how you love LAX! Josh, I know how much a Southwest flight from Phoenix is, come for a day! I was wondering if we couldn't do something like "mini-tutorials" at the booth. The idea would be that they would be like 5 minutes, people standing, and cover just a single feature of Inkscape. Then, we could make a flier covering that same feature -- which would give us interesting give aways for the rest of the time. If we did one each hour, we'd need roughly 16 of them. We could make a schedule, it might generate traffic. What do people think? Maybe the same 8 twice (two day conference)? I was also thinking that we need some artwork, perhaps the About screens? They say Inkscape on them, yet still show off features? Brainstorming people, argue, attack, kill my ideas! Go! :) --Ted

Any other presentations would be fine, but there is nothing I need to see. I'm still trying to convince the Wacom rep for LA that he should loan us tablets for the computers. Snapping guides lines to objects...

Hello, I would like to use Inkscape for serious work and I'm missing one think, is it snapping guides lines to the objects. It is very importent think if you want to draw some object in similar possition to the other object. Please try to add this imporvement to the next version. Btw. scripting bug

osx 10.3.9, python 2.3, Inkscape 0.4.3 (Inkscape_20060120.dmg) installed PyXML-0.8.4 successfully nothing happens when you go: File >> Execute Python in the script dialog starting inkscape from command line gives only this error when that command is executed: interpretScript: error starting Language '(null)' I do other python stuff, and was looking forwards to generating complex artwork from algorithms in a form that was human editable later. cheers Mat

There are now a number of projects that package a gtk+ application into a "standalone" OS X app. For example, Inkscape and GIMPshop both build standalone OS X apps based on the methods you developed for Gimp.app. The technique of taking all the dependencies and stuffing them into your app bundle is adequate for getting a single app working but it leaves much to be desired when multiple apps are using those same dependencies. You end up with multiple copies of some pretty big libraries lying around taking up space on disk and in memory. In order to minimize this wasted space, support files (like header files) are left out, leading to the current problem where OS X users aren't able to build plugins without descending into the seventh circle of Fink. As a solution to these problems, I would like to suggest packaging a complete install of gtk+ and its dependencies separately from Gimp.app. It would mean that installing Gimp.app would become a two- step process instead of a one-step process, but the OS X community as a whole would see a tremendous benefit. There are lots of other great gtk+ apps out there that could reach a broad audience on OS X if it was only easier to just install them! The only sensible way to achieve this is if there's a fast, simple way to install gtk+ and its dependencies. Some of you may be thinking "well what about Fink and DarwinPorts?" The fact is that neither of these is a satisfying solution. The "stable" branch of Fink is terribly out of date and the "unstable" branch (like DarwinPorts) requires hours of building from source to get gtk+ installed. And either solution involves lots of futzing with the command line. If you've come to OS X from linux that seems simple, but for most OS X users it's a major turn-off. Anyhow, I hope you'll consider this proposal seriously. I honestly believe it could open the door for lots of great gtk+ apps to be ported to standalone OS X apps. I'm going to post the same message in the Inkscape forum, so maybe both projects can work together. Couple things (noticed a patch and have an idea)

Not sure if anyone saw it go into the tracker, but, when going to snag the undo history diff from the patch tracker I saw that there is a patch to do color cursors that support transparency. Would someone that knows more c++ than myself be willing to review it? Man oh man is this release cycle shaping up to be the most improved so far. Anyway, the idea that I have is that if we don't actually use any gtk+ 2.8 features, that we should use the last 2.6 lib bundle we had for win32 building to release win9x compatible builds again (in addition to the 2.8 builds for 2000/xp). I know that there have been good bug fixes in gtk since then, but if we can still technically produce the builds I think we should try. I honestly don't think having two windows builds would be a bad thing, the same way that we will post packages for different distros. If others are okay this idea, I will even offer to produce those 9x compatible builds for the releases until we're no longer able to. Any thoughts? -Josh
