Hi all, In the past few weeks I've attended a *bunch* of talks on open source communities, testing, and so on, and at the same time have noted the growth of the Inkscape community over the past few months, most especially evident from the growth of list traffic with the 0.42 release. At the same time, I've noticed that the project has been simultaneously gaining some better testing approaches while it has faced some QA challenges, most tangibly evidenced by the need for a 0.42.1 release to correct some errors due (it appears) to insufficient package testing. About a year ago, we budded off the inkscape-users community, which has proven to be quite effective. The list surpasses inkscape-devel in membership, and has helped foster our user community to get involved in doing things like setting up the deviant-art sites, help with the about screen contest, spread PR, conduct testing, and assist other users. Anyway, yesterday I heard a talk about how the Mozilla project similarly divides into sub-communities like we've done with -devel and -user, and have seen similar benefits (the NYT article organized by the Mozilla marketing community being an excellent case in point). I was particularly interested to learn that one of their most vibrant groups is their testing community, which organizes its focus specifically around making the browser better, collecting useful information from users, and ensuring there is sufficient test coverage of areas under development. I think that given the strength of interest in the Inkscape 0.42 release, and the need for better testing that it's shown, that right now would be an opportune moment to form an "inkscape-tester" community. The project definitely could benefit strongly from such a community. The purpose of this group could include: * Package testing. As mentioned above, this was a challenge in the 0.42 release, and we need organized help here. * Usability analysis. On the list recently has been a number of discussions regarding usability and the need for increased critique/analysis. Doing this within a community distinct from the development group may help focus it, and reduce the distraction of the debate that it generates. * Automated testing. Several people have been working on establishing automated ways of testing (including nightly builds and packages), so this community would give these efforts a home. * Platform compatibility. Inkscape is being used on an increasing diversity of operating systems and hardware. It's difficult to filter through the development and usage discussions to identify how to make it work on a certain platform. inkscape-testers would provide such a forum and a way to organize the collection and distribution of this information. In general, the inkscape-tester group would stay at a higher level then core coding, focusing more on finding and analyzing problems, and helping to show Inkscape will work well for all users. I've also thought a bit about some other communities that may be worth forming, such as a documentation community and perhaps a marketing community. Mozilla has both of these communities and finds them successful. There definitely is a need to help the various people working on documentation to become better organized and to have their efforts more recognized. If someone would be interested in organizing a documentation community, I think we have enough interest and participation to make it viable. For a marketing community, I don't think the time is quite right; our marketing efforts are already meeting and exceeding our expectations, and the amount of resources needed is limited and generally only comes into play for the short period around a release. Of the three, I feel the inkscape-tester community would be the most valuable to form right now, and would give us the most bang for the buck. I'm willing to put effort into getting it organized and started. Are there people who'd like to see this formed and/or participate in it? Bryce

How do others feel about these adjustments to the menu layout? There's been general agreement I think that some adjustments to the menu layout are necessary; if we can get a rough concensus on some items, I'd love to see these incorporated for 0.43. Shell integration of the win32 package

I just installed the Win32 package of 0.42 and noticed that when I opened an SVG file from Explorer that Inkscape showed the short name. Putting double quotes around the path to Inkscape (in the (edit|open)/command subkeys of svgfile in the registry) resolved the problem (the space in Program Files probably triggers some weird logic, I've made this modification quite often). So instead of: C:\Program Files\Inkscape\Inkscape.exe "%1" It should read: "C:\Program Files\Inkscape\Inkscape.exe" "%1"

Path Class Help

As a few of you know I have been trying to code skeletal strokes (vector only) for inkscape. As of now ( and for a little while) I have been stuck. I have coded the coordanite difference function, which is the basis of the whole idea. I'm current trying to code the Path difference function. I have looked at both NR::Path and livarot's Path classes. NR::Path doesn't seem to be what I need. Livarot on the other seemed to be what i need. But I'm just not understanding (grokking) how to use it for what I want. As a very new person in these lists, may I make a comment from my background of writing software for the printing and publishing industry over a period of nearly 40 years.. In the early days, programmers were expected to debug their own code, and usually didn't till it got on site. The customers were then exposed to the nasty underside of software development ie debugging! As the software industry grew in size it also developed its own professionals and with them came improved testing. Even today, although I will document my code, I hate testing it! I always, always insist that part of every contract includes adequate provision for testing with real customer data, but NOT by me. You should always test software with a third party. Save preferences also when they are created from the skeleton

Hi, As a precautionary measure the preferences apparently aren't saved if there was an error loading them. This also applies if they are initialized from the skeleton. This makes no sense, since in that case any old file would have been overwritten anyway. It only causes you to lose any preference-changes from any session started without an existing preferences file (like the first one). I've made a patch for this. It also includes a few gboolean->bool changes. Preferences are still prevented from being saved in case creating the file from the skeleton should fail. Hi- sorry for the huge time I've been incommunicado (my family is moving tomorrow, and as a consequence, I've been busy and largely net-less for two weeks... I should have a good connection as of Sunday though). But I've uploaded a new release of the OCAL browser for Inkscape- now called the Clip Art Navigator- to Berlios ( http://download.berlios.de/ocalhelper/clipartnav.tar.gz ). I've included install instructions in the package, but they seemed unwieldly, so I've setup the default config file so that you can use it in its raw unpacked form too- just run "python clipartnav.py". So you can skip the second paragraph of the install instructions in the readme if you want. Dependencies are currently Python 2.4, sqlite, the pysqlite2 python bindings for sqlite, gtk 2.6, pygtk, and the python bindings for libxml2 (I'm very keen on switching to pyxml, but its documentation is horrible, and because of my crappy internet situation, I haven't been able to figure out how to do namespace-based xpath queries with it yet). I believe it can be used on Windows, if you meet the dependencies and set the "repodir", "dbfile", "inkscapecmd", and "inkviewcmd" settings in the config file appropriately, but I haven't tested this (at the very least, GTK's lack of svg support on windows won't be the stumbling block). The major design decision I've had to make is in deciding how to deal with multiple repositories. Basically, it takes an ordered list of repository modules from the config file, queries each of them in sequence, and then while retrieving individual images, skips images that have already been returned by a previous repository. How does it uniquely identify images? By the md5 hash of their svg xml contents. OCAL currently doesn't have any facility for returning hashes, of course, but that part's optional... the repositories can return None instead and the image will just be fetched. So hopefully, There are quite a few missing features, of course, the biggest of which is, uh, OCAL connectivity. I'm still having problems with SOAP, and decided to work on the GTK stuff for awhile just to keep productive. I'll write an OCAL module using another web forms hack in the next couple days. The only repository module included currently is "localocal" (sorry, couldn't resist), which just searches a local directory of svg images, a la the OCAL packages. The "localocal.py" file in the modules dir, in addition to being a repository module, is also a command-line program for indexing the contents of such a directory. I'm going to revamp that command-line interface, but for now, run python localocal.py -r DIR index where DIR is the absolute path to that root directory. Then set the "repodir" setting in the "clipartnav.conf" file accordingly, and set the "dbfile" setting to the absolute path to the new "index.dat" file in that directory. All of this will be automated as much as possible soon. Other missing features are copy-paste (this one is really bugging me... I can copy-paste fine into text editors, but not into Inkscape... and before you suggest it, I've looked at the GTK clipboard action target types extensively), a more dynamic caching system (I describe my plans for that in the DESIGN.txt file), actual insertion of clipart into existing Inkscape documents (this works when invoke the program from the command line yourself and drag-and-drop into Inkscape, but in traditional Effects-menu use, the clipart just replaces the current document... I'll fix this as soon as I switch to pyxml), documentation, and easier installation. I'll try very hard to check email frequently over the next few days, so please let me know if you can't get it to work, or have absolutely any questions or feedback whatsoever. Two issues in particular I'd appreciate ideas on are what could be wrong with copy-paste, and (silly as it is), why I can't get the "forward" button in the interface to have the same arrow style as the back button via glade. In src/selection-chemistry.cpp, sp_selection_tile() line 1957 and on: // delete objects so that their clones don't get alerted; this object will be restored shortly for (GSList *i = items; i != NULL; i = i->next) { SPObject *item = SP_OBJECT (i->data); item->deleteObject (false); } Here's the cause of bug 1238314. If a clone-original is incorporated into a pattern, it's clones are orphaned (because the version in the template is a renamed duplicate). By replacing the code above with a call to sp_selection_delete_impl(), the bug is fixed, but the clones become regular duplicates. Is this desirable? Or should it be fixed in a way that preserves clone-relations? (The comment seems to indicate that this is the plan.) --Nicklas

filename convention for translated files

Hello, for the win32 installer I want to find out the translated files and group them in specific language packs for further selection. How can I look for a translation of a file ? there is: ./HACKING.txt and ./HACKING_fr.txt and on the other side: tutorial-basic.svg and tutorial-basic.fr.svg can I assume: -that the language identifier is always that from fr in fr.po -if there is a "special" translation pt_BR or sr@...428... then the tutorial bla.pt.svg or foo.sr.svg is assigned also to this language Any other tricky stuff doing a separation of translation that I have not seen ? Problems compiling CVS for Win32/Mingw and Whiteboard

Pressure and tilt support

Hi, I've created some basic input device pressure and tilt support. The changes are: - A standard input device dialog has been added - Device settings are loaded from and saved to the preferences - The dialog canvas widget accepts extension events - The calligraphy tool can optionally use the input device's pressure for pen width, and/or tilt for pen angle The diff, and the new source files are available from http://www.lysator.liu.se/~nili/inkscape/ What do you think about it? --Nicklas

autogen.sh fails because it can't find README

This could be on GNU/Linux only, but I went ahead and built again today, and autogen.sh stopped cold with the complaint that it couldn't find README. I noticed that CVS is packing README.txt now instead, so I simply renamed it to README and all was good. Still, where the heck did this come from? autogen needs README? And why is it getting packed as a *.txt now? (Sorry, windows users. I haven't saved with a *.txt extension for a while now.) Just thought I'd call attention to this for future reference. --seth
