Hi there, These past days I've been adding an experimental UI to Inkscape for tweaking parameters in OpenType variable fonts. One major roadblock I stumbled upon is requiring me to think more carefully about some potentially deeper architectural changes. In the screenshot attached to this message you can see some text written with the Decovar variable font. The slider labeled "Testing" in the "Text & Font" dialog is wired to invoke a callback upon value-change. This callback detects the currently selected font based on the canvas text-tool cursor position, retrieves the corresponding font_instance object and invokes Freetype's FT_Set_Var_Design_Coordinates method with the updated design-space coordinates (the slider in this experiment is hardwired to adjust the weight axis of Decovar). (I really miss a Freetype method to alter a single design-space coordinate, instead of having to pass the full array, by the way) The way things work right now, unfortunately, leads to the glyphs not changing on-canvas because once they are loaded, they seem to be kept in a cache. As you can see in the screenshot, each glyph has a different weigth, based on the slider setting when the glyph was loaded for the first time. It seems quite obvious that I should do something to invalidate the cache upon dragging the slider. But that, on the other hand, should not alter glyphs in other places where the same variable font is being used in the same document. Based on all that, I think that the proper implementation would involve creating individual font_instance objects for each text chunk where a variable-font is used with non-default design-space coordinates so that they can be tweaked independently. Achieving that, though, will surely involve a bit deeper fiddling with Inkscape's text internals, which is what I expect to do in my next few days of work on this. cheers, Felipe Sanches PS: I'm crossposting this to the Inkscape-devel mailing list as the rest of the development community may be interested in receiving updates on this topic. A second point is the removal of ifdefs, which I can't rally do with resource files, but I'm hopping it won't matter (famous last words). How to change visible selections in EnumParam

Dear Inkscape Team, my bool op LPE has classical bool operations suitable for closed paths and line cutting operations suitable for one open and one closed path. I wanted to adjust the options shown in the EnumParam depending on the path type, but couldn't find out how. Also it would be interesting to know if there is way to know when the path in a PathParam is set, because at this point I need to adjust the options shown. Otherwise I would make the decision on the main path and always require that the operand path is closed (and give a warning if not). Or do you think it makes more sense to have two LPEs, one classical bool LPE which only works for closed paths and one path trimming LPE to trim sets of open paths with a closed path. I think separating the two might be more obvious to the user. Best regards, Michael

Some help needed with making operand path invisible in bool op LPE

Dear Inkscape Team, with my recent pull request, the bool op LPE should work properly. A few notes / questions: 1.) The operand (other) path is not made invisible. I typically have my operand paths in an invisible layer. Is this ok, or should the bool op LPE make the operand path invisible? If so, I wonder how this could be done. The main problem is that I have no idea how I could re-enable the operand path when the bool op LPE is disabled (with the eye button in the bool op list). As far as I can tell, the bool-op code doesn't run at all when the bool-op is disabled, only when it is enabled. Or should I change the bool op so that it works on groups of paths (as created with Ctrl+K)? This would obviously solve the problem, but then I would need a grouping LPE, because one of my operand paths is typically a result of an LPE stack, while the other isn't 2.) The cut boolops only make sense if one path is an open path and one path is a closed path. Should I disable the cut options, if this is not the case? How can I detect this? 3.) The LPE only works on paths, not on objects. Is this ok? I guess this is the case for all LPE. 4.) The LPE has options for the fill type (odd-even, non-zero, positive). For the operand path (the other path) I can find out the inherent fill type of the path. The problem is somehow that the fill type is stored in SPItem objects, but the LPEs operator on SPCurve. The closest point upstream in the call stack is SPLPEItem::performPathEffect, but the SpItem is not passed down the the specific LPE code. Any ideas? Btw.: fill type negative would be nice to have. Marketing/Advocacy/Outreach Team - Proposed Objectives

As perhaps a primer to forming a new team to serve the Inkscape project, I would put forward for discussion the following *objectives* for such a team: 1. *Increasing the project's contributor base,* as measured by code commits, non-technical contributions, cash contributions, etc. 2. *Improving the market position of Inkscape*, as measured by user and target-user opinion studies, favorable press coverage, increased usage, etc. 3. *Increasing community loyalty and engagement*, as measured by participation in physical meetups, online discussions, social sharing, etc. Finding consensus about objectives seems more productive at this stage than strategy and tactics. I'd love to hear what you all think or would add/remove/edit. *(Bryce: I had this largely written prior to your response to the other thread, so feel free to steer this conversation in a different direction if you wish)*

CI timeout for merge request

Git submodule policy / address sanitizer

Dear Inkscape Team, since gitlib is up and running, the question arizes if we want to use submodules, and if so which folder structure should we use. I want to add address / memory sanitizer support and use https://github.com/arsenm/sanitizers-cmake. It is just a few files and I could copy them verbatim, but it would make sense to add it as a submodule. In case you don't know what address/memory sanitizer is: it creates instrumented builds (about 2x slower) which check for all sorts of invalid memory usage, like access to freed memory or reading uninitialized variables. The cmake scripts above enable this by a cmake define, similar to switching between debug and release builds. In my experience it saves a lot of time in tracking down obscure bugs in complex C++ code. I right now have a debug/release deviation I want to track down. Best regards, Michael

Hi Friends, Should we put up an announcement about the upcoming hackfest, on the website and forums? (I realize it's already been announced on mailing list.) I found this page: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Hackfest2017 But it doesn't give the agenda - only where attendees will meet each day. (The Hackfest Topics page isn't written yet.) If someone can give me, if not agenda, just a short list of potential topics, I can write up a quick News item for the website. Something more than just - fix bugs, stability, and infrastructure - if possible? (And I'll also make forum posts.) Apparently we don't need donations so much this time. But (announcing) it would still be an opportunity to keep the user community more involved -- even if all they can do is read about it. Speaking of announcing, should we take another shot at creating an advocacy group or team? Maybe after the hackfest activity is over? Late July - August-ish? All best, brynn

I think I see the problem. I don't know why I never noticed it before, but there's an unclipped blur (or 2 or 3), which must be intentional, in the official logo. https://inkscape.org/en/~inkscape/%E2%98%85inkscape-official-logo-vector I don't know if it's a rumor, but someone mentioned the MS site doesn't handle that partial transparency very well. And it certainly appears as if that were the problem, by how the logo looks there. (It's not uncommon. I've seen a lot of sites like that. ImageShack, for example.) If this would solve the problem, I've created a version of the logo with a clip path, so that the blur isn't extending. The original is not changed at all. Either way, I really rather not see this incident again, and it's clear that Microsoft wants to support open-source software, but I got to admit it's partly because they know some softwares will benefit their goals of having the Store given attention. Now with business, you can be assured that Windows 10S will be used for security purpose, and in a lot of case, Inkscape will probably be part of the package. But, I"m not here to discuss that, but only putting this out there. Really, the 1-bit limitation is not something that should exist in 2017. Hi Inkscape-devel subscriber and developers, So, just as the title said. I am making a Krita series of file with the icon suitable for the Windows Store. Why am I speaking of this? As attached is the progress so far. Because, it has come to my attention that someone thinks Inkscape in the Windows Store is fake, and the icon alone, and the screenshots are very telling signs that it is fake. So, now, I have decided to make a Krita file to share for the icon. Also, the guy who shared the lie that Inkscape is fake on Windows store also thinks Krita is fake within Windows Store. If you are that person that I want, if you would like me to proceed with the creation of the icon, I would be happy to offer the icon. Right now, this is all I'm going to do at the moment. In any case, legitimacy is something to acknowledge as part of the project. Also, .zip is rejected? Is there a list of rejected extensions so that I wouldn't get Undeliverable message?
