NEW: blurred shadows

Here's the real reason why I implemented "create bitmap copy": Via prefs, you can specify an external filter that will be run on the PNG file after it is exported but before it is imported back. I use this for grayscaling and blurring the image to create a soft drop shadow for any object. The script itself is share/extensions/inkscape-shadow.sh. It's not integrated into the extensions or plugin system in any way (Ted, I may need your help on this). The script requires Imagemagick 6.x to be installed. To enable this, you set in your preferences.xml: <group id="createbitmap" minsize="250" filter="/full/path/to/inkscape-shadow.sh" filter_param1="20" /> In filter=, you specify either the full path to the script, or just "inkscape-shadow.sh" if the script is in your PATH. The script receives the image filename as the first parameter and the filter_param1 as the second parameter (more parameters can be added). This particular script interprets that as the blur radius in pixels, but of course that depends on the script you use. Now, I'm not going to provide a GUI for the blurred shadows feature, for these reasons: 1. You have to carry around the shadow PNGs along your SVG. It's inconvenient, and the PNGs may be much larger than the SVG. 2. The shadows are not resolution-independent and are not updated automatically. For all this, we need to support the gaussian blur SVG filter (a standard SVG feature). But since we don't have any filter support yet, hence this hack. 3. Both Batik and Adobe have (different) problems with displaying PNGs with alpha transparency. (Much like the Internet Exploder - shame on them! :) Still, for those who desperately need blurred shadows right now (such as myself), this feature works well enough. Try it out, it's fun.

NEW: Make a bitmap copy

The new command, Make a bitmap copy (Alt+B), exports a bitmap of the selected objects (hiding all other objects of the document), saves it as a PNG file alongside the document, and imports it back into the document. This can be used e.g. to replace objects with gradients or transparency by bitmaps for printing or PS/EPS export.

Well... I finally got my new hard drive functional, and at the recommendation of other developer(s) went and put on Fedora Core 3 test 2 First, is anyone else on this? Second, I encountered a problem with libsigc++. The latest versions won't compile for me. 2.0.4 and 2.0.5 fail. However, 2.0.3 works. So second, has anyone else seen problems building 2.0.4 and 2.0.5? (my compiler is gcc version 3.4.2 20040907 (Red Hat 3.4.2-2))

NEW: current style & misc usability

* All object-creating tools can use the current style for new objects. The current style is the style that you last applied to an object (when changing its fill, stroke, transparency, etc). For example, after you paint some object black, new shapes you create will be black too. Alternatively, a tool can use its own style for new objects, which is not affected by document editing. The Preferences dialog lets you choose between using the current style (shape tools by default) and the tool's own style (text, pen, and pencil by default) for any tool, as well as to set the style of a tool from current selection. The "Apply to" list in the Fill & Stroke dialog is removed; this dialog now always sets the style of the selection. * Double-clicking a tool button calls up the Preferences dialog open on the page of that tool. * The Preferences dialog remembers and reopens the page that was active the last time you used it.

SPObject coding

Can anyone give me some pointers on how to implement an SPObject? I'd like to correctly hook the metadata repr's to something that can receive proper signals, etc. Right now the metadata is a giant flaming hack, and it looks like I could really solve a bunch of the bugs by making it act like other repr-based things. Where can I look for some _easy_ examples of how the SPObject stuff works, and what the minimum requirement is for function implementations, etc? -- Kees Cook @outflux.net

I see at least: * AST * gtkmmification * boehm collector * layers * text rewrite I think we need to tease these apart, and perform triage to push some of these into a subsequent milestone. -mental

/potrace cleanup

The /src/potrace directory needed some cleaning up. Also, as Bulia suggested, I needed make /trace a subdir of /src, so that in the future other implementations might be added (such as maybe something of our own). In addition, it is probably best to not litter Peter's Potrace source files with files of our own. So now it is organized as /src/trace and /src/trace/potrace, and Makefile_insert Makefile.am verbs.cpp dialogs/tracedialog.h dialogs/tracedialog.cpp and several of the items in /trace have been edited to reflect this structure. You will need 'cvs up -P -d' to get this stuff. . -Please- let me know if this breaks the build. I am trying a fresh checkout/build to make sure it is OK. Bob

Go to the tracker, find something you can fix, fix it, and announce to the world! :) Seriously, we're having a bit too many open bugs currently. I know everyone is busy with their own stuff, but if each developer could close at least a few bugs it would be very nice. Many of them may not even need any coding but only verifying, testing, rejecting etc :)

Can you explain how to install external extension in inkscape? I have binary (for example "spalah"). It can receive SVG file through STDIN or file (for example spalah < /path/file.svg spalah /path/file.svg ) and print it to STDOUT The questions. 1. Static C++ libraries

I am not sure if this has been agreed upon, but we are going to use static linking for all of our C++ dependencies, right? In other words, for all of the libs: libsigc++ gtkmm glibmm gc(cpp) They are ./configured with --enable-static --disable-shared, so that subsequent 'pkg-config --libs' calls will return the info needed for static linking? We need to remove C++ dependencies from the shoulders of our users, -especially- since different C++ compilers and different versions of the same compiler usually do not mix. A way to check such dependencies would be: 'ldd inkscape' The C++ libs should not be listed. Bob

idea: "temporary ungroup"

Talking with a friend today, we came up with the idea of renaming the "Edit group" feature to "temporary ungroup", since that is closer to what it does (from the visual user's perspective). "Edit parent" would then become "regroup". He also noted that Flash lets you do something comparable by double-clicking on a group. That seems like maybe a good idea here too. Thoughts? -mental

"Canny edge detection" - meaning "clever" or "cautious"?

Hi, while updating the de.po, I wondered whether "Canny edge detection" means "Cautious edge detection" or "Clever edge detection"? Maybe a different word should be used unless it's totally unambiguous for native English speakers. Cheers, Colin

Hi guys, I heard from Bob today that he had integrated my "potrace" into inkscape. That is really great! I checked out the inkscape-devel archives and I noticed that Bob was tinkering with brightness settings to prepare an image for black-and-white tracing. Did you look at the "mkbitmap" program, which comes with the potrace distribution? It is a pretty good pre-processor for potrace for certain types of images, like cartoons or photographs of handwriting. For some examples, see http://potrace.sourceforge.net/mkbitmap.html It does not do too great for Bob's venus example, I have to say. The problem (which is shared by the "canny" edge detector) seems to be that both programs look only at edges in the contrast data, and ignores edges in the hue and saturation. Therefore, there are lots of missing edges in the left part of the image. -- Peter

New Win32 build, and a gtkmm question

I built another Win32 copy this morning, almost same as usual, but this one has several differences. If someone could test it to see if it works, I would appreciate it. This was a clean build using newer versions of MinGW's mingw-runtime, win32api, binutils, and the release candidate of their gcc-3.4.2 diffs. I think they are preparing for another complete release, which would be wonderful for our Windows-trapped developers. If this newer stuff works OK, I will upload tomorrow. In addition, this is using newer bugfix versions of Gtk and Glib from Tor Lillqvist's site. Hi, all, I seem to remember us having gthread-2.0 on our link line previously. I am finally getting the trace function to run on a background thread. Does configure.in need to be adjusted? Or just a Makefile.am? The --cflags part is redundant, and is not needed: %>pkg-config --cflags gthread-2.0 -pthread -I/usr/local/include/glib-2.0 -I/usr/local/lib/glib-2.0/include But this needs to be added. arena leakage

Ok, more on the arena leakage we were discussing last night; there are two main causes that I can see right now: 1. NRArenaItems still increment their children's refcount, even though they are now managed by the garbage collector. The resulting belt-and-suspenders situation keeps both the child and its parent from ever being collected. The fix: remove internal refcounting from arenaitems (non-gced objects still need to refcount them, of course) 2. NRObjects (like NRArenaItems) often allocate memory from the libc heap, which the collector cannot free automatically. There is an existing finalization callback for NRObjects that was used for freeing such memory, but it was no longer getting called. The fix: hook that now-unused finalization callback to the garbage collector's finalization callback. Once I get those straightened out we'll see if there's anything else left. -mental
