Hi, Yes there is no specific standard for this, but the general consensus seems to be "Name Description" for non-core desktop apps. AND, Since de manual I made was writtent for Sodipodi and that it is a quite old now (because Inkscape is improving very fast), I aim to update it in the following weeks. I also would like to improve english translation of this future manual. Help would be welcome. I'll tell more about the way I see that in the next days. To get a narrower and more useful estimate, use backdated CVS checkouts (the -D switch) to find the most recent date on which the CVS was is OK, and also the first date on which it is broken. Then we can make a diff between these two dates to figure out the reason. If you manage to find the day of breakage and if that day's diff is big (which is possible, given the rate of checkins we're having on average), try to narrow it down to a few hours. For example: cvs -d:ext:<your sf login>@cvs.sf.net:/cvsroot/inkscape checkout -D"2004-04-04 12:00" inkscape will give you the CVS as it was on that date at midday. autopackages of Inkscape CVS now available for pre-release testing

Hi, In January I said to you guys "go ahead and use GTKmm, don't worry about dependencies, that's our job" and promptly disappeared for a few months. Hopefully you accept my apologies - we've made a lot of improvements to autopackage in the meantime with the result that it's now capable of making a competent attempt at installing Inkscape and related dependencies. Firstly a recap: autopackage is a framework for building Linux binary packages that will install on any reasonably sane/modern Linux distribution[1] to any prefix, whilst taking care of all the fiddly bits like getting the menu integration right, dependency resolution and presenting a nice GUI feedback window while the program is being installed and its dependencies downloaded. You can read more about it on its website: http://www.autopackage.org/ I've packaged Inkscape, GTKmm and libsigc++ but not popt, libart, gtk2 or libxml2. I think most distros should have these things already. The long term plan is for autopackage to be able to drive apt/yum/urpmi and so on to be able to fetch dependencies not available in .package form from the distros native package repositories if possible. For now that doesn't work, so the user has to resolve those dependencies themselves. The Inkscape package is built from CVS nightly. It is available here: http://navi.cx/~mike/inkscape/inkscape-0.39cvs.package It can be installed like this: $ wget http://navi.cx/~mike/inkscape/inkscape-0.39cvs.package $ su # bash ./inkscape-0.39cvs.package In other words, just run it. Currently you should do this from a terminal window, though support from running it directly from file managers is nearly ready (it mostly-sorta works now). You will be prompted to download the autopackage support code. This should only happen once (until we do a new release of course). You don't have to run it as root. If you don't, it'll install itself to ~/.local - menus and such should still work theoretically, let us know if they don't. There is currently no way to uninstall graphically. You must run "package remove inkscape gtkmm libsigc++" as whichever user you installed as to uninstall the packages (assuming all of them were installed by autopackage). You can remove autopackage itself by running "package remove autopackage-gtk autopackage" as whichever user installed the support code. "package list" shows what you currently have installed. The summary screen at the end of the install will tell you what autopackage actually put on your system. Upgrading just involves downloading and running the new package, but our upgrade support is currently pretty weak. It'll just uninstall the old package and install the new one :) There is no way to do this automatically at the moment, you just have to wget the new .package file from my web server. It is keyed to a testing pre-release of autopackage 0.5, which isn't out yet but will be soon. So, report any bugs you find now :) If you like you can link to this package from your website. If you do, please put the usual disclaimer about autopackage being beta software etc on it. thanks -mike [1] for Inkscape that means any gcc 3.2 system with GTK2, as we need the 3.2 std lib DSO and we haven't packaged GTK2.

Firstly, thanks for integrating the binary relocatability patch! This will help not only the autopackage team but win32 porters as well. Having said that, you now have to remember that you can't use the C preprocessor to build paths anymore. News from the Scribus World

Hi all, Since 1.1.6 was released, we have begun the long and winding road to Scribus 1.2. Some updates: Last night's CVS release, contains new code to speed up image rendering. It *is* noticeably faster. Anyone using CVS, is encouraged to update and test. There is a Roadmap document for 1.2 and 1.3+ which has been posted to www.scribus.net Those who who might be interested in tackling some of these tasks are invited to join in. Slashdot visited again, based on a review of 1.1.6 from madpenguin.com. This led another discussion on dot.kde.org here: http://dot.kde.org/1083054064/ as well as stories on newsforge.com and others. In related news, the Inkscape team marches towards their next release. The current cvs version has a new feature called the "clone tool". It harder to describe, than to use, but it is an innovative way of editing. Also, there is a new project being launched called "Open Clipart. I have posted a story on the front of www.scribus.net with details. Scribus users are encouraged to support this new endeavor. Cheers, Peter

Quick Observation / Inquiry

Hello. I've been following Inkscape development for a while now. I was also on the Sodipodi list. 1) Observation: One of the nicer features of Sodipodi's interface was the ability to quickly zoom in on a selection, as that is one of the most frequently done operations. You can still hit '3' in Inkscape, but is this not one of the features that might qualify for a RMB entry? If no, I understand you get a lot of UI suggestions, but I figured I'd throw this one out there. It seems to be a logical fit. 2) Inquiry: What are the plans, if any, for patterns in Inkscape? Every couple days I say to myself "Hey, I just need to go in there and hack up some pattern support...", and yet... Lauris did not comment a lot of his files very well and the myriad of SP/NR_long_names_of_pointers shoved together in structs makes my eyes cross. Is anyone on the development team interested in patterns? There's a sp-pattern* file subset, but nothing seems to be done with it... It's SUCH a crucial feature is it on the radar at all? Can we remove acinclude.m4 ?

inkscape seems to compile fine if I do rm -rf acinclude.m4 `cat .cvsignore` builddir ./autogen.sh && mkdir builddir && cd builddir && ../configure blah && make -sj4 A simplistic check suggests that none of the macros it defines are used by configure.in (with the arguable exception of AC_PROG_LIBTOOL, which is defined by /usr/share/aclocal/libtool.m4 anyway). (This check ignores the possibility of configure.in invoking a macro in /usr/share/aclocal that invokes a macro whose definition is overridden by something in acinclude.m4, but in these cases it's questionable that we would want the acinclude.m4 version anyway if we never update acinclude.m4.) Our acinclude.m4 causes a number of warnings with automake-1.8. Has anyone any objection to removing acinclude.m4 from CVS ? pjrm.

sp_item_write_transform

I've decided to go ahead and rewrite sp_item_write_transform() into a form that doesn't write to reprs -- leaving SPObjectClass::write soley responsible for repr writing. Since the existing write_transform code was only writing to attributes for their side-effects (updating other member variables -- better done directly), this shouldn't be too hard. I'm not going to commit anything obviously broken, but just a heads up to look out for transform breakage in case I miss something along the way. A side-effect of the change is going to be that sp_item_write_transform will need to be followed by an explicit call to sp_object_invoke_write(). sp_item_write_transform() will probably become sp_item_set_transform(), also. Part of the reason for doing this is that I plan to remove the requirement for explicit writes (during editing) altogether, in favor of a per-document "dirty list" that gets written out automatically before the transaction is finalized with sp_document_done(). We'll see how this goes... -mental

Deleting extensions

Hey, I've committed some code that increases the abilities of the checking involving scripts - and I left in some debugging output. The reason for this is so people will complain ;) You might get something like: Deleting Extension: Dia Input Typically this is caused by not being able to find the program in the path. If, you think that something shouldn't be deleted, and it is getting deleted, please tell me. I think that the path detection code should work on win32 also, but I don't have it to verify. If someone could verify that it would be cool too. Thanks for your time, we will now return you to your regularly scheduled program :) --Ted

Problem with the GTK file selector in KDE

Hi, I noticed the following problem when using Inkscape in KDE: if you open a file selector dialog (Open, Save As, ...) and switch to another task without closing this dialog, then you will not be able to switch back to this Inkscape instance, so you will sooner or later need to kill it. The same happens if you move the file selector dialog to another virtual desktop: you will not see the dialog again, so you will not be able to close it. This does not happen in GNOME, nor does it happen with other Inkscape dialogs under KDE. Other GTK apps I tested (Gedit, Gnumeric, GnoZip) do not have this problem even under KDE. Clones tamed

I just checked in a change to the clones code which allows you to select how a clone reacts when its original is moved. In the Inkscape Preferences dialog, Misc tab, you can choose between: - Moves in parallel: Clone is translated by the same vector as its original. - Stays unmoved: Clone preserves its position when its original is moved. - Moves according to transform: Clone moves according to the value of its transform= attribute. For example, a rotated clone will move in a different direction than its original. Until now, the last of the three options was the only possible one. Now the default is the "moves in parallel" option.
