The messed up icon issue

Hi, I finally have the time to do what Kees Cook suggested. I updated my local cvs dir just now and did "./autogen.sh", which throws at the end: ---output--- checking for autoconf >= 2.52 ... yes (version 2.57) checking for automake >= 1.6 ... yes (version 1.7.6) checking for glib-gettextize >= 2.0.0 ... yes (version 2.2.3) checking for intltool >= 0.17 ... yes (version 0.27.2) Copying file po/Makefile.in.in Please add the files codeset.m4 gettext.m4 glibc21.m4 iconv.m4 isc-posix.m4 lcmessage.m4 progtest.m4 from the /opt/gnome/share/aclocal directory to your autoconf macro directory or directly to your aclocal.m4 file. You will also need config.guess and config.sub, which you can get from ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/config/. patching file po/Makefile.in.in ---/output--- What should I do? Where do I copy the files from /opt/gnome/share/aclocal to? If I do "make distclean" it says: ---Quote--- make: *** No hay ninguna regla para construir el objetivo `distclean'. Alto. ---/Quote... Which means: There ain't no such thing as 'distclean' bro. or similar. Suggestions? Since it looks like folks decided to enforce a gcc version (according to the closed bug report on this), I went ahead and implemented a test for version 3 or better in "configure". -- Kees Cook @outflux.net

Grid-related patches

Hi, I've just put a couple of grid-related patches in the tracker; I mention them here in case anyone wants to disagree ;-) 1. Anchor points are snapped to the grid; otherwise when you're drawing a line with the pen tool you get every point except the first snapped to the grid, which seems a little odd. 2. Resolve the issue whereby changing grid snap units from pixels to mm is not noticed. Fuller explanation is in the comments I added and in the patch tracker. My other grid-related problem is that pasting a snapped object results in the pasted version not being snapped to the grid. I plan to fix this so that pasted objects are placed such that their points have the same offset from the nearest grid points as the original. Any objections? Cheers Carl

Do not close an unreproducible bug unless a reasonable amount of effort is put into reproducing it, and let it rot for some time before closing - someone may come up with a better report in comments. 2. Clarify. If it took you some time to guess what it's about, take another second to reword the title or add a comment, to make it obvious to whoever will be reading the tracker after you (especially if it's the person who can fix it) . 3. Document your solution. Text in PS output

Hi, Does anyone happen to know why Inkscape prints text to PS using curves, rather than just a standard text object? Is it because of font substitution problems, or something? Cheers Carl

Hello I download the .exe and install it on a winxp machine. All went fine except for a user called marieJosé. inkscape do not like the "è" in the user $home : inkscape.exe 2248 invalid utf8 string passed to pango_layout_set_text(). when starting (i think it comes with loading/writing prefs files. well it start ok but i would like to avoid that message, if possible i tried with another user (me) herve and inkscape start fine. i tried to copy my prefs files in the inkscape directory the message remained. i looked in the prefs file to see any mention of $home and didn(t found one). Is there a way to avoid it ? hervé

Another grid-related question.

Hi, When you draw a path using the pen with the grid enabled, the centre of the resulting path is snapped to the grid. However if you then drag that path around (using the select tool), the /edge/ of the path starts snapping to the grid. For my purposes I'd say that snap should always be to the centre of the path, but I can imagine that others might want to snap to the edge of it. Any thoughts? Carl

Yes, I thought about that. The problem is that not all keyboards have 9 and ( on the same key. In Europe, numeric and punctuation keys are usually laid out differently. In "keys.xml", under the "Offsets" shortcuts, it shows "Ctrl (", "Alt (", and "Shift Alt (". To generate a "Ctrl (" you need to press shift... but the other command makes a distinction. Two solutions: change keys.xml to say "Ctrl 9" change short cuts to handle "Ctrl 9" as well as "Ctrl (" (which is what the "Alt (" shortcut does. -- Kees Cook @outflux.net

marker orientation

Hi guys, Bit of a conundrum, which way is the end marker on a curve meant to point? if I've got a curve thus ---------------- and I apply the same arrow marker to each end should I end up with a) <-------------> or b) <-------------< ? I've read the spec, and cant work it out. I looked at the test cases, however they use triangles aligned like this V------V which look the same with both options a + b, so its not very helpful. batik renders b, so thats how I've done it currently, however I just wanted to be sure. Carl, I can give you developer CVS access if you want it, to make it easier to patch things. You'll still be able to post patches you're not sure about to the tracker first, but otherwise you can write to the tree directly. Win32 build fix.

Hi, Attached is a patch which removes references to extension/menu.h from src/make.dep and src/make.files. It also adds extension/internal/eps-out.o to make.ofiles. I'm guessing that these files are in CVS for the windows build, and are not supposed to be auto-generated... Cheers Carl

What we DO need from Pango is proper glyph composites and contextual forms (in some languages, different glyphs are used for the same char in different positions), and that fits into the "get glyphs from Pango into the renderer" part. As for text layout proper, I see no need to rewrite it once again, with all the spacing and kerning that was added recently. compiled-in paths

I moved the INKSCAPE_*DIR paths into config.h so that all subdirs would pick them up. This also makes it dependencies will be checked correctly if "configure" is re-run and paths change. Before, you could change the "prefix" and some .cpp files would not get recompiled with the new path. Hopefully my logic is sane and I haven't horribly broken anything. It seems that either way (with Makefile -D's or with config.h #defines) the paths end up compiled in, so there's no difference other than better visibility to the defines. -- Kees Cook @outflux.net

I can assure you the thinking is mutual. Making a fully compliant SVG application is an ambitious and worthy goal. While Scribus has some basic drawing capabilites, it is unlikely to have anywhere near those of Inkscape. Moreover, cooperation has already led to some good ideas for the future, as well as immediate benefits. Both apps in their latest releases have much better importation / exporting results for end users. Over time, I have the sixth sense some big things will come from collaboration between the two - toolkits aside. Peter
