directory reorganization

SO I proceeded with the dir. reorg. last night and I have the head compiling and all that. I still have some other little tweaks, but the largest chunk (excluding packaging) has been committed. Please make sure that I did not break anything. The icons and extensions folders now are inside share. Also, I put the svg files that were in icons (about.svg, keys.svg, and tutorial.svg) and put them into share/screens and updated and created a variable INKSCAPE_SCREENDIR instead of INKSCAPE_PIXMAPDIR for these files where accessed in help.cpp (this is defined in src/Makefile.am). ISHMAL, could you please look and see how a fresh cvs windows build works. I have a strong feeling that a I broke it, as I have no test box and tried to conceptually follow what I did on the linux side. The part that might not work I'm pretty sure is contained in config.h.mingw and Makefile.mingw I believe. I became slightly confused after staring at weird makefile syntax for a couple of hours. I will delve further into cleaning up the makefiles now that I understand automake and makefiles much better. There is sooo much legacy architecture and cheap hacks where the same paths are called in different places in the makefiles. Also, would you all agree that I should migrate the current recursive makefiles to just one top-level makefile? You all might also email me/the list a wishlist of how to clean up the source tree and the makefile nasties as they currently exist. roadmap items + general timeline

Hello all, I'm just reviewing the roadmap right now and it looks like maybe we could all give it another once-over. There are a few tasks that have not been taken on by anyone. Maybe we should all look at the bug tracker as well to see if there are any bugs we can help smooth out--as this is the bug hunt. Also, I'm wondering when we think we will get 0.38 out the door generally. I know we don't operate on timed releases, but I think if we can start to see the general timeline for the next release, our work will start to hone in on a general time. Who is working on an extension proposal? That is on the roadmap for this release. new AST module

Starting today, I'll be working on a new Inkscape::AST module, which will eventually replace the current SPRepr subsystem. The goal is to reduce the complexity of the XML code, while allowing for e.g. CSS and SVG path data to be manipulated in the same tree, in broken-down form (rather than as monolithic strings). libxml will still be used for parsing XML data, and hopefully we will be able to start using libcroco for CSS data as well. The new XML editor will also use the AST code, and it in turn will serve as a basis for the Layers dialog UI. Questions are welcome. -mental

Compile warnings

I just did a rebuild after updating to the new layout. When I did, it came up with 805 warnings. Eeeek!!!! Guys, when you have a chance, see if you have -Wall configured and try to get to zero warnings. I know a lot of more verbose ones have come up recently, especially with our changes to C++ and such. So I am being a bit of a complainer here. :-) But... on projects I've seen where warnings were kept out, quality came up. So though I expect zero-warnings may not be hit any time soon, keeping that in mind as a goal will help our code be better. Thanks.

scrolling weirdness

Bulia or anyone else, When I scroll use the vertical scrollbar everything is very smooth and the canvas is not smeared, but when I use my scrollbar mouse, the canvas is smeared in the update. This is especially true when looking at the tutorial. Can someone else verify this. Although this is not a bug, it is kinda weird updating of the canvas. Anyway...it becomes cumbersome to use the scroll mouse to move around with these weird updates, as you can't see exactly where you are heading. It would be nice if a similar update method was used as is with the vertical scrollbar wheel. NOTE: I have not looked at the code for thi. Jon -- Jonathan Phillips <jon@...15...>

However when I tried to make it correctly display Cyrillic font names, I found that g_locale_to_utf8() does not work (even though g_locale returns the correct locale, CP1251). The error returned by the conversion function says "Error during conversion: no such file or directory" (code 2), which suggests that it requires some external module or table which is not included with your GTK or Glib files. further font problems

Now that Inkscape can see all font styles, futher problems emerge. The biggest problem is that SVG uses CSS, and the premise of CSS is different from that of a design app. CSS was designed to get "as close as possible" font rendition on a wide variety of platforms. The goal of a design app is to render the font _exactly_ so long as it is available on the system. The font selection properties used by CSS include family, style, weight, variant, and stretch. Each property has a fixed limited set of values: http://www.w3.org/TR/SVG11/text.html#FontPropertiesUsedBySVG Of these, currently supported by Inkscape (to some extent) are only style (italic or normal) and weight. However, even if all these properties are fully supported, Inkscape _would still be unable to reproduce some fonts_. Take a look at the list of fonts in the Caslon family here: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=904962&group_id=9… It has many variants that CSS simply cannot handle: Swash, Alternates, Old style figures, Expert, etc. I think it is unacceptable for Inkscape to ignore any fonts simply because CSS cannot describe them appropriately. So, I think the only acceptable (although unelegant) solution is to introduce a two-tier font specification. Namely, I propose to introduce <text> attributes inkscape:font-family inkscape:font-style that will hold the family and style exactly as reported by the OS, without attempting to parse them into weight, stretch etc. These will have precedence over CSS in Inkscape and will allow it to reliably use any installed fonts. For non-Inkscape renderings, the CSS specification will work as before (although it probably needs to be improved to handle more of the CSS properties and values). Thanks a lot, I committed your patch. We're excited about it because the old rasterizer was a sore spot, it was buggy and so cryptic that no one could really debug it. You know, the point of having these hamdles is not so they are "beautiful". The point is that they are intuitive, immediately visible, and immediately recognizable. As a person who spends hours in Inkscape doing real design work, I am of the opinion that inversion helps immensely. Any border immediately makes the handles look noisy (there's no AA) and overcomplex, and any color of their own damages the subconscious abstraction of the handles as something entirely different than the objects. Besides, it is well known in design that transparency and fancy colors only work starting from some minimum size; in too small objects they only give you annoying "dirt".
