Sodipodi flags 1.6

Sodipodi flags 1.6 This is the fourth release of the Sodipodi flag collection. This collection currently consist of over 300 different international and local flags. The flags are donated by their authors into the public domain. The flags are in the scalable and free SVG format which today is supported by most major vector graphics programs. Most flags are done using the Sodipodi vector drawing application. In others words these are free flags in a free format made with a free application. The core collection of flags in this collection are meant to be as accurate as possible. If you discover flags in here that have wrong proportions or wrong colors then please update the flag with the correct colors or sizes and send it to us with an explanation. New flags are of course also welcomed, but remember we need a clear statement from you that you dedicate the flag to the public domain, preferably using the Creative Commons public domain dedication process found here: http://creativecommons.org/license/publicdomain-2 We do hope that many of you take some time to help us make this an evenmore complete collection; for instance the missing international flags per ISO 3166 are: bm, BERMUDA ky, CAYMAN ISLANDS fk, FALKLAND ISLANDS (MALVINAS) sh, SAINT HELENA tc, TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS vg, VIRGIN ISLANDS, BRITISH We hope that this collection can be useful to people in many different settings be that in relation to software, publishing, education and so on. Call for MS Windows peoples

There are a few things for win32 builds that I have been starting to get hammered out. However, I'd probably need some help with it (as I don't think just editing and checking in my changes from Linux would be the best way) So... I'd like to make a call for all present and potential Windows users. If you can compile Inkscape yourself or not, doesn't matter. I'd just like to find who can help maybe just run it on different setups. Windows 95/98/ME users are especially needed. Of people who can compile Inkscape for Win32, we'd like to know your exact setup. It would be nice to be able to try it on a few different build pathways. Warning / bug in nodepath.cpp

I was going through some files, and cleaning up the minor warnings we get with -Wall. However, some are not minor! (-Wall is good. -Wall is our friend!) Anyway, there is a warning that 'xn' and 'xp' are used unitialized in nodepath.cpp at line 2081. There are several places in SP/Ink code where apparently the author expects an uninitialized double to be 0.0, and I thought this was one of them. On closer inspection, the troublesome code is the following. At the indicated line, if xn and xp are 0.0, that would make the condition always false. It would be, and probably is, the same as an '#IF 0'. I doubt if that is the intention. What should we do? Win32 & SHGetSpecialFolderPath()

I tested it on a Win98 box, and it works nicely. So I think we have the Win9x case covered by this function, and the NT+ case covered by the glib call. Creates \Windows\Profiles\%USER%\Application Data\Inkscape if it doesn't exist, and puts preferences.xml in it. So I -think- we are done with this one. Bob

Win32 builds

Now that the files have been checked into the tree, it has become very easy to build on Win32. The main thing I am looking for, is a missing DLL dependency or something like that. Even though I have tried these on other machines, I would still appreciate a 3rd party testing it. Thanks. Bob

Tasks for 0.37 - Calling Volunteers!

Of the remaining tasks for the 0.37 release, there are a few items that we need volunteers for: 1. Create new screenshots for website 2. Review/remove obsolete (#if 0) code 3. Remove the SP prefixes and put into namespaces (e.g., SPFoobar -> Inkscape::Foobar) Most of these don't require a lot of experience with the codebase or C/C++, but they do require a lot of effort, so what we'd like to do is divide up the work among many hands. If each of us puts a few cycles in, it should not take long to tag team them all to the ground. 1. Creation of new screenshots is easy. Set up your desktop to look spiffy, with something "interesting" going on with Inkscape. Perhaps most helpful is if each screenshot focused on a specific feature (especially new ones like booleans and inset/offset). We also want a very attractive one to put on the homepage. If you want to do this, make the screenshot and announce it on this list, and we'll add them to the website. You can post your screenshot to your own webserver, or email to me directly (not to the mailing list). 2. Removing of the #if 0 code should be straightforward. There are large sections of code in the codebase that have been fenced off with pre-processor macros so that they never get compiled in. Why are these chunks of code in there? By definition, they're not necessary so probably can just be deleted, and so that's the plan. However, we need them to be reviewed to make sure we're not deleting stuff that's important. If you want to look at this, I've broken out the work by subdir in the Roadmap, so go sign up there. Each item should be a couple hour's worth of work, max, I figure. 3. Currently the code uses prefixes, but since we converted to C++ we want to use proper namespaces. I.e., instead of SPFoobar we want to have Inkscape::Foobar (more or less). This can partly be done mechanically through scripts, but we also want to move things around in the process. Details about the namespaces to use are available from the SubsystemRearchitecture document in Wiki. If you're interested in working on this, contact Mental, or just go ahead and start submitting patches and we'll work things out as we go. Thanks, Bryce

Win32 cross-compiled build

I put a new build on the web page today, one that I made completely on a Linux machine. However, I was not able to find a free Windows box on which to try it out. If someone has the time, please give it a try. By "cross-compiler" , I mean the same MinGW-modified GCC that we normally use on Windows, but built on Linux instead. It is likely incredibly buggy, being the first one made this way, but hey, it's a start. If this works, we can start automated builds soon. Bob

Naming

There has been some discussion about what to name the things that add functionality to Inkscape, but are not part of the core. I've always called these modules, while there was discussion on this before - it seems that it is time to change the name. I don't really care what we call stuff, I just want everyone to use the same terms. Here's what I'm proposing: extension --- a chunk of functionality that extends the functionality of Inkscape, but is not part of the core code. script --- an extension that is built using STDIO to pass SVG data and change it in some way. extension system --- The code that deals with all of the glue between extensions and the core. Complaints? Comments? Additions? Ideas? --Ted

Planning for 0.37 Release

Hi all, Now that the holidays are over, it's probably a good time to start focusing on cutting a release. Much good work has been done due to the steady level of activity over the past month. It looks like all the "hard" tasks in the Roadmap have been successfully completed, but there's several other cleanup tasks still to be done. It's a good bit of work, but divided amongst us it won't take much time per person to achieve them. We'd identified Feb 1st as a possible release date, but I think we should release when the tasks are done. Conceivably that could be before the 1st, given how much productivity the team has brought out on prior releases. I'll post the plan shortly, and identify areas where we need volunteers. Meantime, have a look at http://www.inkscape.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?Roadmap I'll also extract a "short list" of bugs that should be fixed for this release. Some thoughts

Hello all! Well, I finally downloaded Inkscape again and gave it a try. I hadn't seen it since the old 0.35-pre days, and I must say this new interface you all talked so much about is MARVELOUS! I *love* it! With the tools organized this way I can finally make my way into some rather basic designs! (I couldn't do it before, for I wasn't able, ever, to find where the things I needed were). I was raised in the old Freehand school, so this definitely suits me much better! I do have some comments, however. Well, at first glance, the "Click, Shift+click, drag around objects to select." message is not the warm welcome message I would expect. It would be great to have a "Welcome to Inkscape!" status just as the program starts if the new window contains a new document. The about menu entry, also, lacks the typical GNOME about icon. In the about window, there's Federico Mena (Quintero, I suppose) written as "Frederico". I drew a rectangle and tried to move it to some given position with fixed width and height. After setting X, one (well, I did) would normally use Tab to switch to the Y field. It does switch, but focus seems to be lost somewhere, for the next number zooms in or out. Also, I truly don't know why, my mouse cursors seem to be broken. I'm sorry I can't make a screenshot of this, but they look odd. The "icon" looks almost fine, save it's all trashed and shifted and... well, it doesn't look right. I just grabbed the code from CVS one hour ago. It looks great as it is! postscript output: no included bitmaps

When postscript output is made, it includes bitmaps in a reasonable-looking .ps file, but ggv does not like it... Postscript output

Hello, I've just used the CVS version of inkscape from this AM to print to postscript file using postscript elements and it works fine for the SVG elements, but not for the .png or .tif or .jpg bitmaps included in an inkscape document. Has this worked in the past? If not, should I write this up as a bug report, or as a feature request on the wiki? Even without adding inclusion of bitmaps, Inkscape plus Scribus is a like-the-pros-use set of layout tools, and with plugins planned will outstrip those easily. Minor changes to Win32 build

Hi all. I uploaded another build last night, which would basically be a snapshot of CVS at 0600GMT. It has two changes from the previous build: 1. It does not include the gtkmm, glibmm, atkmm, and pangomm files. Since we don't have a dependency on them for the time being, why download them? 2. I changed the build from a heirarchical set of makefiles, to a single makefile with makedep files. This greatly simplifies the build, and makes it cleaner/safer. However, any change like this can possibly change the behaviour of the product. So if anyone sees anything odd (or odder than normal ;-) please let me know. During this week, I will be working on debugging and cleaning up the GTK static build, which is complete, but needs tweaking. (Like where /etc and /locale and /lib are found). Hopefully by next Monday I can get the entire thing working, and also a nightly automated build from a cross-compiler. Bob

Gtk 2.2

Would anyone have any problems if we bumped the gtk configure-time requirement to >= 2.2.0? We're already having trouble with 2.2-specific stuff getting introduced, since (I think) that's what most of the developers have.
