Hi all, I just wanted to make a much belated announcement. As many of you know, I got involved with Inkscape as a result of the need to design labels, etc, on a very very tight budget for products I was seeking to launch. Well, as of this year, Lava Brew™ ( http://lavabrew.com - https://twitter.com/lavabrew ) has officially gotten off the production line and is now available in stores in the Greater Toronto Area (in Canada)! All graphic design for Lava Brew was done in Inkscape (photo touch-ups in gimp, and some CG elements in blender for promotional material). Thank you so much to everyone involved in the Inkscape project, and especially everyone who helped me toil away at all sorts of bugs affecting my usability and all the questions I had. Need help for GSoC project - Slice toolbar items

Hi all, I posted a draft proposal about extension system a few days ago. But afterwards I realized that it may not fit in with the roadmap very well and is not complete. So I would like to switch to the slice toolbar items project. The problem is I don't get the project description very well. What's the difference between it and the eraser? Problem with text tool in Inkscape 0.92.1

Hi there, can anyone help me? I am trying to use the text feature in Windows 7 64bit using Inkscape 0.92.1 in the following manner: I select the Text tool (F7) and start typing some text. As soon as I hit enter (for a newline of text) the newline jumps to 500px above the original text. I went into the NEWLINE spacing feature (which is cool) and changed the value to 0. Also changed the measurement from pt to px, cm, mm and nothing worked. What am I missing here guys? --Victor Westmann

Hello, I am Gurdit Singh Bedi. I am a 3rd Year student pursuing B.Tech Computer Science. I have worked with many language, mostly python and java. Recently over the past one year, I been developing websites. The most recent one is a Virtual Finance website, hosted on http://vfinance.herokuapp.com. Hello 😊 My name is Nashmia Riaz and I’m writing to you from Islamabad, Pakistan. I’m currently in my third year of university, where I’m majoring in Software Engineering. I am a graphic designer as well and was introduced to Inkscape when I first got into designing, and I’ve been very fond of the simplicity and functionalities it has to offer. I plan on submitting my proposal for GSoC ’17 very soon. I’m having some trouble getting around the source files of Inkscape. Is there any documentation or help manual that can help me manoeuvre my way around the code? Anything that can tell me which functions and pieces of code are located where? I want to get started on improving the CSS Style Sheet Support, so any help would be great. Also, as far as the bug fixes are concerned, how can I communicate fixes to the Inkscape team? Inkscape freezes on PNG export

I was exporting to PNG, when I found out that Inkscape was trying to export a huge image of something like 100000x100000. I waited 5 minutes and after having seen that the progress bar made no progresses, I clicked on abort button. Update to window rotation.

Hi, I've been reworking Jabier's window rotation code to use the desktop to window affine rather than messing with the SVG viewbox. This is to keep the GUI code out of the SVG handling code (also viewbox doesn't have the concept of rotation so it was a real hack to put it in there). This also unifies how zoom and rotation are handled (and eventually could include flip). With trunk r15603 most of the work is done so I would like to ask that people try it out. There are currently two ways to rotate the canvas. 1. Use the rotate spin entry box at the lower right corner of the screen to input an arbitrary rotation value (right click to open a pop- up with preset values). In this case, the rotation is around the center of the window. 2. Use Shift-Ctrl-Scroll wheel to rotate around the current cursor position. Currently the rotation is set to be in increments of 2 degrees. (We can make this a user defined preference.) Note, this is a work in progress. Axiometric grids are not handled correctly and resize/skew/rotate handles are not rotated with the canvas. It would be interesting to know how people use a rotated canvas. Is it with a separate tablet (e.g. Wacom) or with a touch sensitive screen? Yale Zhang has a branch with gestures support. GSoC 2017 proposal - Robust Extension System

Hi all, I'm a student at Xidian University, of Xi'an, China. This is my first time to apply for GSoC. Since I haven't applied before and don't know how to write a good enough application, I decide to follow the Inkscape SOC application template on the website. I'll try to cover all the points in brief. Also, English is not my mother tongue. Please excuse any errors on my part. I use Inkscape mainly for technical drawings (e.g. flow charts, neural networks structures) and app icons. The most complex two I created are a convolutional neural network and an anime character[1]. I love it for being powerful, easy-to-use and off course, open source. Being a contributor to it would definitely be exciting. I'm browsing the source code recently and have submitted two patches[2,3]. I code in C++ and Python. My favourite programming tools are Vim and Git. Projects I completed include a COOL compiler [4] which is the course project of Stanford compiler course and an Android client [5] for the NHK easy news website. My contributions to other open source projects are: 1. I fixed a bug in the implementation of the Felzenszwalb segmentation algorithm in scikit-image[6]. Old implementation does not update the sizes of merged regions which causes small regions to be merged into only a few large regions. [7] 2. I extended the Python binding of the Dlib library [8] to support discontiguous Numpy arrays. [9] Q: Why should you pick me? A: I use Inkscape and I would like to help it become better. I'm particularly interested in improving the performance of Inkscape which has been complained by many users [10,11] and hope to learn from it as well as sharpen my programming skills. The statements and adjudgements below are according to my current knowledge of Inkscape. If there's any mistake, please let me know. Any advice for improving this proposal will be greatly appreciated. The Proposal ============ Project: Robust Extension System Abstract The extension system is a way to extend Inkscape's functionality. My project aims to improve the performance of the subsystem and make extension development reliable through creating a specific unit test framework. Goals: 1. Check extensions' availabilities in a top-down strategy to avoid unnecessary rechecking in the case of cascading failure. This also makes the dependency check faster. (May 30 - June 20) 2. Implement a universal expiration time manager for all the extensions which uses less memory and is easier to maintain. (June 21 - July 20) 3. Create a test suite for extensions. Build infrastructures like document builder, extension loading, node and attribute lookup, etc.(July 21 - August 20) 4. Other miscellaneous tasks. (If time allows) - Implement an INX builder for internal extensions, making the code more readable and maintainable. - Release an extension if it gets deactivated to save memory. This follows the observation that deactiveated extensions are never activated again. - ... Details: 1. To check extensions' availabilities in a top-down strategy, we should use a data structure like disjoint sets to represent the relationships between extensions. We then assign ranks to extensions in the following way: If an extension has no dependency, we call it a root extension and assign a rank of 0 to it. Otherwise, we set its rank to the maximum rank of all its dependencies plus one. With the help of ranks, we're able to check extensions' availabilities in the order of their ranks. This ensures that an extension's dependencies have been checked before it is checked. 2. Inkscape trunk uses a circular linked list to manage extensions' expiration times. It is not well designed and do bad things (calling 'delete this' in the member). We can improve this by introduce a universal expiration time manager. The expiration time of each extension is inserted into a min heap (or priority queue) on load. When the manager timeouts, it removes all the time that have expired and unloads those extensions. This is similar to how Nginx manages its event timers. Unlike Nginx, we set the timeout of the timer according to the minimal expiration time instead of a constant interval and update it once the queue is updated. 3. Testing an extension is straightforward. We read or elaborate some documents, load the extension and test it against those documents. For most of the input/output extensions, we can do nothing but check if they finish without error and assume that third-party libraries do what they are supposed to do. For effect extensions, we apply them to the documents and examine if the objects are corretly modified in the returned document. Some helper functions should make writing test cases easier. I noticed that there're some bare-bone tests located in the test subdirectory of the extensions folder. Testing Python extensions separately using unittest is a good idea, but what about extensions written in other languages? This needs further consideration. Problem with associating Inkscape to the SVG file type on Windows 7 x64

Hi, After upgrading to version *0.92.1 r15371* *x64*, Inkscape no longer associates to the SVG file type. I tried completely uninstalling/reinstalling. Have also made sure there are no other versions still present on my PC. Checked for any version x64, x32 or portable. My PC runs on Windows 7 x64 U.E. I also had not recently updated or installed any other software. An other strange thing was that suddenly GIMP was being associated with the SVG file type, without me adjusting any settings. I would right click a SVG file to try associate Inkscape via the routine *Open With... Choose Default Program*. Inkscape was no longer in the presented list. Also navigating to the *inkscape.exe* file and selecting it, was no use. Inkscape would still not associate with SVG. Also trying through the Configuration Panel didn't work. Also, trying again after rebooting the computer, didn't work. Typical thing is that SVGZ file are still associated with Inkscape like they where before. Notably, I am not having issues starting up Inkscape directly from the executable. And I can still use it to edit SVG files. It's just an annoyance to have to use a work about. Also I feel not qualified to tell whether it's a bug or not. I have posted on the Inkscape forum, where they recommended that I contact the developers through the mailing list. Hi, I am a college student who is looking to contribute to the inkscape project as I am trying to participate in "google summer of code 2017" . I have some initial trouble compiling the source code when I ran cmake .. . Hi I am Rohit. *As I mentioned in my last email, I would like to contribute to Inkscape by working on the Development Project Management System during the summer.* I have already submitted some patches to inkscape-web repository. I would like you to help me write my project proposal by suggesting more features that can be implemented in the system. After going through the blueprints, funded development project and Janitorial task, I suggest we build a Web portal with the following features : - People can submit,edit and view ideas for development project.( With login capabilities or without it) - The admin and the user(who uploaded the idea) will have the authority to change the status of the project ( Like assigning it to somebody, changing the design,priority,delivery,tags of the project among other things) - Contributors can view the ideas based on different filters( priority, tags, design, janitorial, languages) and can select those project by letting the admin/user know. - A feature will be added where contributors can comment and clarify their doubts about the project. - All the launchpad blueprints can be transferred to the portal with a well written python script. This is just a basic blueprint of the system. Dear Developers, Thanks to the work by Rohit Lodha, we now have javascript validating the resource upload form. What this means is that if you don't have enough quota, or there's some other issue with your upload like it's the wrong file type for that category. Then you should get a javascript message before the form is submitted and you shouldn't have to wait a long time for the form to fail. I have given permissions. I’m quite familiar with how to get programs to start when it comes from the internet. Issues Loading Inkscape on macOS Sierra (Version 10.12)

I have version 0.91 of Inkscape (installed 64bit version) and xQuartz version 2.7.11. I have used Inkscape on this computer before without problems but now it won’t load (program goes to not responding). I start xQuartz first because I read something that said I should, but that didn’t help. I’m assuming this has to do with the OS since nothing else had changed (I don’t remember when I updated to macOS Sierra, so I’m making a wild assumption here). To be safe, I did remove and reinstall xQuartz and Inkscape (in case something had become corrupted) but that didn’t fix the problem.

Changes to several extensions for Python 3 compatibility

I have made minor modifications to several of the supported python extension files for compatibility with Python 3. These modifications allow them to continue working in python 2.x, and do not add dependencies. I am not sure if this is duplicating existing work, but I thought it might be best to discuss it here just in case. The changed files are: inkex.py bezmisc.py cspsubdiv.py simplepath.py simplestyle.py simpletransform.py These patches are based on files from 0.92, and which are unchanged in current bzr. I have posted the files here, since I am not an approved Inkscape developer: http://evilmadscientist.com/source/extensionfiles-py2-3.zip (18 kB) (In addition to these, I would note that ffgeom.py and cubicsuperpath.py work in both Python 2 and 3 without changes. I have not tested other extension files for compatibility.) These changes appear to be non-breaking within Inkscape, as tested via invoking extensions that depend upon these, including flatten, Voronoi pattern (generate from path), and alphabetsoup. I have tested back to Python 2.6 under Inkscape 0.91, and up to Python 3.6 on the command line. While this is neither a formal test procedure nor exhaustive, I have not observed issues or errors due to these changes. If there are formal tests that could identify other issues, I would certainly welcome learning about them. One coding note that I have is that the function definitions in bezmisc.py required "manually" unpacking the named tuples on their inputs, which adds one line of code to each function. Someone more expert at python may know of a more elegant approach. I would assert that making the extension environment compatible with Python 3 is a worthwhile goal, even if we are quite some ways away from making Python 3 compatibility a requirement. This particular set of changes potentially allows certain Inkscape extensions to be run from the command line without opening the Inkscape GUI (not otherwise possible for verbs) on systems running either Python 2 or 3 as default. Impact of going GTK3 only for extensions (especially on Windows)

Hi, I just read about the upcoming removal of GTK+ 2.x from Inkscape. What does that mean for extensions? At the moment my extension makes use of PyGTK. That means, it uses GTK+ 2.x. Will the extension still be usable in the future? As far as I understand, it shouldn’t be a problem on Linux, where the installation of Python and GTK etc. are separate from Inkscape, but on Windows its included by Inkscape and probably stop working once GTK+ 2.x is removed. question - text width and height

Hi, I am working on an extension for markdown -> svg text transform and currently facing a problem with getting text dimensions. I would like to position and scale my result (Group containing several text elements) into required values but I don’t know how can I get width and height of that group. Is there a way to get these values? I’ve read about using BBox. Is there a functionality maybe in inkex package to get BBox of an element ? I’ll be glad for any advice. Thank you, Lukas Haberzettl

Roadmap for Inkscape 0.93 on Windows - GTK3, devlibs, MSYS2 and support for Windows XP

Hi all, one of the biggest changes in current trunk is the switch to gtk3. As some of you already know this step will be a hard one on Windows as we have to rely on pre-built development libraries to be able to compile Inkscape: * devlibs currently has no support for gtk3 at all. (There's an experimental branch on which jazzynico was working, but as far as I know he was never able to complete it due to build issues) * devlibs64 includes gtk3 3.19.6 but IMHO it's pretty broken and would require *a lot* of work to get anywhere near being usable As a result we're currently not able to build Inkscape for 32-bit Windows at all (bug 1609954 [1]) and builds with devlibs64 are nowhere close to be usable. *Therefore I want to propose to switch to MSYS2 for compiling Inkscape trunk on Windows!* MSYS2 is a rewrite of MSYS including all the necessary build tools to compile native applications for Windows using mingw-w64 (see official homepage [2] for details). Furthermore it includes the package manager "pacman" (users of Arch Linux will know it) which allows to conveniently install and upgrade packages. The switch would have a *lot* of advantages: * Easier setup of the build system as gcc and all necessary build tools and libraries are included in MSYS2 (currently we require to download gcc + devlibs + cmake separately and procedure varies widely between 32-bit and 64-bit builds) * A solid set of constantly updated libraries (see [3]). * Packages are usually built with a small set of patches to fix compatibility errors on Windows that would otherwise require hours to figure out when building libraries from scratch. * An active developer community. Questions are answered swiftly, bugs in the provided libraries can usually be figured out jointly. * Creating new packages (if it should ever be required) or recompiling existing packages (i.e. to test a fix) is extremely easy. (I recently added libvisio [4] which was the only dependency of Inkscape not yet provided) * 32-bit and 64-bit builds are equivalent. The exact same library versions are used and MSYS2 includes build environments for both that co-exist by default I'm already successfully building current trunk with MSYS2 without any issues at all (there are no code changes needed, only environment variables have to be adjusted and the CMake install target has to be adjusted to pick up the correct libraries). If you're interested you can find the latest builds at [5] (the most obvious change is the Adwaita theme that is now used by gtk3 by default but doesn't look very native. However that's something we can customize going forward as desired). There's one big downside: My builds currently don't work on Windows XP. However I'm afraid this has nothing to do with MSYS2. Many libraries have started to drop support for Windows XP, most importantly gtk3 does not support it after 3.16 [6]. This means we have two possibilites: * Drop support for Windows XP in Inkscape 0.93 * Try our best to somehow (currently I have no idea how!) continue support for Windows XP. This would most likely require us to keep building, maintaining and distributing our own development libraries (however I guess even here MSYS2 would be a huge help). While achieving this might sound favourable keep in mind that it would require us to limit ourselves to old library versions on purpose with all the inevitable downsides like unfixed bugs and growing number of incompatibilities in newer OSs. I thought about this for some time now and although it was not an easy decision I'd vote for the first option. I know people still use Windows XP in productive environments (I have an old Windows XP server running myself - shame on me) but to be realistic it's time to move on. Support for XP ended a long time ago, it's insecure and there's only very few cases where people are actually bound to XP for other reasons than convenience. Weighing all the pros and cons I'd say the pros clearly prevail! *So: Let me know what you think!* Does a switch to MSYS2 as build system sound reasonable to you? Is Windows XP support something we have to keep even if it means a huge amount of additional effort and requires us to limit ourselves on newer platforms on purpose? You're invited! We will be hosting a hackfest in Portland Oregon this spring for 5 nights. Tell me ASAP if you might be interested in joining us. We're trying something a bit different for this hackfest. We're renting a house that's been set up for business meetings, with a front unit and a rear unit.
