Gtk Buttons

It turns out that SPIcons weren't equipped to deal gracefully with situations where they were allocated less space than they were requested. I fixed this, as well as adjusting the buttons' requested size slightly. While I was mucking around in there, I also removed the code that drew random garbage in icons that weren't present (it turns out to have been a deliberate decision in Sodipodi). Anyway, CVS HEAD now has standard Gtk buttons. -mental

Feature Freeze for 0.36

A lot of new features have been prepared for 0.36, and as proposed earlier I think it's time for us to freeze further new features and shift focus to fixing bugs and putting the polish on what we've done so far. I expect we will want to be in feature freeze mode for at least a few days, and perhaps up to a week, before finalizing and packaging the release. So what we need to focus on is: * Finalizing & thorough testing features added for this release * Documentation of new (and existing) features * Fixing all high importance bugs (with criticality scores of 6+) * Testing portability to Win32 and Mac OSX * Preparing for the 0.36 announcement (PR, website, screenshots, etc.) Bryce

docked toolbar steals focus

Mental and whoever else can debug this, here's the problem: - start inkscape - press ctrl-arrows: canvas is scrolling (at least when the mouse is over canvas) - use e.g. F2/F1 keys to switch tools; ctrl-arrows still work - now click on any main toolbar button: ctrl-arrows don't work anymore EVEN after you click on the canvas! So the toolbar steals focus and won't let it go no matter how you try. Since this involves moving focus not between windows but between widgets, I'm not sure how to address this. The same applies to all other keys defined in event-context.c. Maybe we need to rewrite the handler in there somehow. Maybe there's a way to also fix the problem with these keys only working when the mouse is over the canvas. I could not fix this at my first try, now we need to focus on this because disabling keys that used to work is a bad usability problem. One fix: in toolbox.c b = sp_button_new (size, type, action, tt); must be b = sp_button_new (size, (SPButtonType) type, action, tt); Also, there's now again some slight jumping in the aux toolbar when switching tools. status: standard GTK buttons

I'm nearly done a patch that converts SPButton to a subclass of GtkToggleButton. Works great, with one issue -- apparently, an SPIcon widget refuses to paint itself when placed in a GtkButton. I'm going to keep trying to narrow down the problem, but if anyone has any ideas... -mental

Perhaps a bug somewhere in the repr system. I was just trying to use the arrow keys to move an object and inkscape crashed. Sucks because I lost the changes to the document I was working on. I did a few experiments and it seems that moving a selection with the arrow keys is broken. This line M 100 100 L 100 200 moved here after pressing right arrow or alt+right arrow M -1.34217e+09 100 L -1.34217e+09 200 Inkscape will likely freeze or crash if you try to move objects a few times with the arrow keys. libnr precision and maximum zoom

Following our year-ago sodipodi discussions, I tried to increase the maximum zoom. It did not work because at about 70x, paths were simply disappearing. So I went into libnr and simplistically replaced all floats with doubles and all shorts with ints. And it worked! Now I can draw at 256x and there does not seem to be any serious problems. I have uploaded the (very simple) patch to the patch tracker. Please test and report your experience. What should be done: - The patch must be reviewed by someone more knowledgeable than me. I don't quite understand what I did (even though it worked). - The precision of SVG files must also be increased. Currently it's 6 digits; will 8 digits be enough? - There are some nasty renderer bugs that are made more evident by this change. First, WOW! I did not expect the toolbars to be dockable so soon. Mental, you rock :) Second, if we want to make a release with this dockability, there are a couple of things that must be fixed asap. - We need to decide if floating toolbars are to be shared among documents (as are dialogs), or stay local to each document. FOr the latter, it's a simple sp_transientize call on the floating toolbar window so it becomes transient to the current document. For the former, it's a bit more complex, see any of the dialogs I did recently for the code. I think floating toolbars must behave as all other dialogs, i.e. be always transient to the current document. We'll also need to remember in prefs their docked/undocked status, size and position. - Both toolbars must either be not resizable (perhaps easier in the short term), or they must reflow the buttons so they all fit. Now you simply cut them off when resizing. - The secondary toolbar needs more material and more cosmetic work. In selector, its buttons should be divided into three groups by small spaces or dividers: group buttons, z-order buttons, rotate and flip buttons. Do you think I could start putting material into the secondary toolbar now, or should we better wait for Gtkmm? wiki updates -> help menu + similar applications

I've added two items to the wiki. 1.) Under "User Interface Discussion," I added: "Help Menu." I laid out how the menu is currently, how it could possibly be changed to look, and also possible additions to it, to make it a "real" help menu. 2.) "Similar Application" after the "External Links" button. I went out on a limb and decided that we need screenshots of other apps functional parts. I guesss under these app pages, people could also list any feature(s) they really like as an abstract attempt to sway developers to add that functionality to Inkscape. Please post any screenshots, or links to screenshots, or links in general to other vector apps on the appropriate page (or make another one). I would like to help out with the help as soon as I can. I'm about done adding all these bugs to the bug tracker from sodi, and then after that, I would like to look into being the major player in helping with the help menu.
