Technical IRC Meeting

Hey All, During the board meeting today it was evident that we need to schedule a technical meeting to discuss development issues (likely both Inkscape code and Inkscape website related). It looks the week of the 18th-24th is where we should be aiming to calendar something as 1 of the people who would like to participate has school conflicts between now and then. Does the noon Pacific time slot work again like it did for the board meeting? If so, what days are people available that they're aware of in that timeframe? I'm pretty open right now, so we can leave it to others to eliminate days based on availability. Cheers, Josh

Inkscape extension: inkscape-placeholders

Hi! I just wanted to share with you an extension I developed that might be useful for some of you, specially for inkscape web designers. Its a extension that has two functionalities: - Create image placeholders in any size and width with random images from unsplash <https://unsplash.it/> - Create random user avatars from uifaces <http://uifaces.com/>. Both plugins and documentation on how to install them are available via github: https://github.com/Xaviju/inkscape-placeholder I have also written a blog post on how to create inkscape extensions for non developers: https://medium.com/@xaviju/inkscape-extensions-by-non-developers-for-non-de… with what I have learned developing this extensions. Since I am not a python developer myseff it can contain some errors so I will be glad to receive feedback and corrections on how to improve it or PRs to fix any code bugs. Gimp to SVG

Hi to all. I just update the plugin export from Gimp to SVG to allow the export text as text. It become in a new class called "pango to SVG" on the branch. Hi people, Maren gave me a heads up on the font issue (sorry I've been skipping the digests lately, so thanks for that!). Actually great point about the font, at the time I made the website mockups (5 years ago now) I didn't even consider open-source font licencing a critical issue. The Libertine Regular font proposed looks like a good drop-in replacement. There are so many issues with the way the typography has evolved on the website, that I'd really like to redefine a proper style guide (typography, colours, everything) with the planned responsive redesign/evolution. Also the new Draw Freely font is great! Cheers,Hine

The font issue

Hi all, I tend to use fontsquirrel for things like this. It also allows to filter your search for languages. Sadly though for me in China it is hardly possible to use the filters due to timeouts. However, looking for scripts,.. how would you imagine doing that for Chinese or Hindi? I actually thought this was limited to the English text "Draw Freely". I would suggest that the slogan can be edited freely for other languages and fonts chosen as required. Vectorising the fonts would also solve the problem as it then no longer is a font. No need to download font files either that way for those few characters. When it comes to Chinese fonts, they can have up to 180.000 characters for the traditional ones and come at a whopping 18 MB for a font file. It's one of the reasons I am not that happy with deprecating SVG fonts in SVG 2.0. It was a godsend for keeping the glyph libraries small. The alternative now is to create font subsets for every page. But yeah,.. that's another discussion. I think the website font is more of an issue really. That one requires a number of font sets to be chosen and recommended for several of the larger language groups. That basically leaves us with only a few options as the amount of fonts that cater to the world are pretty few. Only fonts used by OS interfaces will be available all others will be proprietary created by foundries that spend years on it. Cheers, Jelle

Strange bug related to "recent file" list

Dear all, I just experienced (and -- fortunately -- solved) a strange bug that almost made me crazy. I am sending this mail with my experience, in case it could help someone else with the same problem. I checked the devel mailing list for something related (searched for "recent file"), but I did not find anything, so I assume that this is new. If it is not new, or if this is not the right mailing list, please excuse me. I use inkscape 0.91 on Linux Mint cinnamon 17, 32 bit. Until yesterday inkscape was working just fine. Suddenly, I was not able to open any SVG file, including the tutorials. As soon as the file opened, inkscape died with "inkscape experienced an internal error and it will close now." The output at terminal showed that it died with GLib::ConversionError and running inkscape under gdb showed that the exception was threw by GLib::filename_from_url. I tried rebooting, removing (completely) inkscape and re-installing, removing the configuration directory under .gconf, but the bug remained. If I run inkscape as a different user, it worked fine. I recompiled inkscape from sources in order to have all the symbols. By running it under gdb I discovered that the problem was an entry "file://pitch.ops" in the recent file list. I guess the problem was that the file was with a relative path (note the two '/') and not an absolute one (I guess this is a bug of OpenShot, why registering a relative path in the "recent file" list?). I cleaned the "recent files" list and everything works again. I hope this helps.
