I do a lot of CAD-like work and to work around certain missing features, I use guides a lot. The snapping system is awesome but the guides are not very flexible. What would be a huge improvement is if it would be possible to select guides. This opens up a whole range of possibilities which extensions and internal tools can benefit from. Examples are: -Create a 3rd guide in the middle of two selected guides. -Create a 3rd guide equidistant from two other selected guides. -Select a few guides and delete them. While researching this topic, I came across an interesting discussion in 2009 with the title "rotating guides" in the inkscape-devel mailing list, where the interesting bit starts at the 3rd page. It appears that the ability to select guides is a bit controversial. I would like to express my opinion on some of these matters as I think it is still current. I agree that guides are not the same as objects and that not all tools make sense for them. However, I disagree that not implementing a helpful feature because it introduces UI issues is a valid argument. For example, I think that not being able to set the stroke and fill before an object is drawn (except for the color) is unexpected as well. So let's not implement fill and stroke at all, because people might get confused. That is basically what is being said below. Grayed out dialog items were invented because sometimes things just don't make sense. I think that is the solution to this problem. Here are some quotes from that discussion: "I don't think making guides selectable is a good idea, because barring any ugly hacks we can only select SPObjects." "if we make guides selectable, this will open a whole can of worms - people will complain that the guides cannot be painted by clicking on a color swatch, cannot be aligned with Align dialog, cannot be grouped etc. etc. A lot of things that are natural for objects make little sense for guides, but by allowing to select them we hint that they are "sort of" objects. The amount of special-casing that this will require in the code and, more importantly, in user documentation and user habits and practices is rather frightening." "It may be confusing for some people, but I think it shouldn't be for the vast majority, especially if it's documented. There are plenty of places where the program can be potentially a LOT more confusing that this, but we don't worry so much if it provides a wanted functionality." "Some of the tools are designed to operate on objects of finite dimensions only. When an object has infinite dimensions, it creates problems."

Debugging with Visual Studio

I figured out how to step through code in Inkscape using Visual Studio and I made a wiki for it too: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Using_Visual_Studio It requires a plugin called VisualGDB which unfortunately isn't free, but definitely affordable. Finally I can use my favorite tool :-)

Inkscape the next release

Hello, as we are now on the road to the release I want to focus to more advanced pdf export. The goal is to have a press ready output. With more detailed font, colour and page handling. As I understand our cairo renderer can output pdf but will never achieve this goal bcs cairo is simply not made for this. (Colour handling). So this task will end up with code taken from scribus or gegl or something. as starting point for reviewing the features I collected screenshots from scribus and corel export dialogues here http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Export_To_Pdf_dialogs However the converter will look like the export dialogue should be kept simple for regular users and more detailled for the experts. .... If we can share some force into this topic over the next period would be perfect. Also did we talk about "save vs export vs save copy as"? I would see Inkscape "open and save" svg only and the other formats just "import and export". Any thoughts? Regards, Adib. --

Make vs btool

I would like to debug Inkscape on Windows but given the lack of response here, I want to try a different approach. http://sourceforge.net/p/inkscape/mailman/message/33438177/ It is possible to debug a linux application on Windows using Visual Studio and WinGDB. However, they only support Make, not Btool. I asked WinGDB for support and this was their reply: /////////////// WinGDB can work with other build systems than make, but project generation is supported only for make. You should be able to build and debug, though. You need to change default command lines from 'make' calls to something suitable to build system used. Please consult following sections of the documentation: http://www.wingdb.com/docs/pages/wg_dev_mingw.htm http://www.wingdb.com/docs/pages/wg_remotebuild.htm We are not familiar with 'btool' build system, so you need to find out how to call it in order to perform build and clean tasks. ///////////// Anyone know what the btool commands are equivalent to make?

Debug build fails

I want to enable debugging on windows and I did the following: Open build.xml: -Add -g to the flag section. -In the flags section, change -O2 to -O0 -Then change this: strip="true" symfile="${build}/inkscape.dbg" To this: strip="false" symfile="${build}/inkscape.dbg" -Then: btool clean btool But I get a bunch of make errors. A non-debug config builds fine. This should be easy to reproduce. Any ideas?

Mesh Gradient Update

I've just checked in code that renames several mesh related elements: <meshGradient> -> <mesh> <meshRow> -> <meshrow> <meshPatch> -> <meshpatch> It also removes most of the experimental smoothing algorithms, leaving only the bicubic smoothing algorithm which can be selected using the 'type' attribute. These bring Inkscape's mesh implementation inline with the SVG Working Groups current mesh syntax (the editor's draft is not yet updated). Note: this code change breaks existing Inkscape SVG files with mesh gradients. The attached perl script will update files to the new spec. Tav

SCaLE related

Hey all, So, for those that don't know, SCaLE is the Southern California Linux Expo, it's the largest annual open source conference of it's type in North America (we had over 3,000 registered attendees this year). Just for transparency, I am one of the conference organizers (the Arts Chair), so I wanted to put that out there. Jon Cruz probably has a much better feel for how the booth activity was, but from the time I was there it seemed like the expo attendees were really interested in Inkscape as usual. The mix of people who know about Inkscape and those that have never heard of it was about the same as previous years from what I can tell (about 50/50), Jon could probably better comment on that since he spent far more time in the booth than I. Probably some of my best interactions were where people were users that couldn't figure out how to do things, and teaching them on the spot. I did want to say that the banner that we got for the booth made a big difference in terms of an appearance of professionalism. There was also an 18"x24" sign for the hackfest (which SCaLE paid for) which contributed to the booth appearance. Jon could give you numbers on how many of the Moo mini cards went out, but I think stickers will be a must in the future (people love free stuff, and I want to see people's laptops decorated with our logo). Anyway the items we had were definitely a great first step imho, but there are other components which we might want to look into for future years. Table skirt or much larger banner/booth backdrop for example. Note: The banner we have is great for the front of the booth, we just need something for the back as well. Anyway, just wanted to drop that little bit of info. I'm still kind of drained and not running on all cylinders again yet, so if I think of more, I will add it to the thread. Oh, and I just donated $5 to the hackfest via paypal because someone gave me a $5 bill in person at SCaLE. Cheers, Josh
