Is Inkscape the wrong tool for what I am trying to do?

Maybe sounds like more of a philosophical question that related to development but there are some things Inkscape does that I either don't understand or that work in ways that are counter to what I want. I seem to have recurring problems with object dimensions changing. This is a problem as I am doing what might charitably be described as mechanical drawings, parts that need to fit together with some precision once they're made into physical objects. I can create an object of some specified dimension (100mm by 100mm) and come back later to find that it's 100.107mm or something. I'm going to see if I can find out what it takes to repro this and file a bug against it if I can make it happen. I also don't get why the stroke and dimensions are summed in the toolbar that specifies the size of an object. I generally work in outline view with stroke turned off because I don't like that adding a stroke value to an object also changes it's dimension. I'm slowing coming to rethink this as the stroke being the cutter width or kerf, which is useful but if I then have to contend with shifting dimensions, it gets frustrating. Is there a way to break apart the dimensions of the an object from it's stroke values? Or maybe a toggle that displays the true dimensions and display the stroke and fill for visual reference/clarity? It would useful to work in Normal view and have the colors there but the dimensions then become a problem. If I specify a 3mm opening and 3mm component to go in it, I want those numbers to display while I work. Maybe Inkscape is the wrong choice for me. I like the ease of use/low barrier to entry and getting things done, and the price is definitely right. But maybe I'm making work for myself. -- Paul Beard This space intentionally left blank.

Ungrouping SVG

Should we check for element->parent != NULL here to make sure we don't ungroup the top-level element by mistake? Martin,

Hello devs, I have succesfully reached a considerable milestone in modifying the current colorwheel in my branch. Markers, a note about Rev 12363

Dear Devs, I've just pushed revision 12363, it includes a simple but user-facing change to the markers in the stroke-dialog which puts them all on one line and removes the drop down label. Now looks like this: http://imagebin.org/261038 I decided to keep the label row data for MarkerCombo for posterity, but remove the display function. I also used the hbox which cut down dramatically on lines since hbox use is the same between gtk2 and 3. I didn't compile with gtk3, but I expect it to work. Please let me know if there are any problems you have with the change. I decided to implement to favored design change after reviewing the feedback on a group of design changes for the stroke dialog. Selection and Symbols

Dear Devs, I'm still working on this UI update for symbols. It's mostly working now, with the exception of the UNSYMBOL verb which as originally implemented required a use element be selection which referenced the right symbol. To fix this weirdness, I wanted to try out an idea. What if selecting a symbol in the TreeView on the right changed the currentDesktop->selection too. Then the verb could act on the selected item directly and as an added bonus, there's a conceptual way to select defs and maybe act on them in the future functionality or plugins (imagine a plugin that acted on a symbol, cool). Only problem is, it also creates a bounding box on the canvas of where the group used to be, with transform handles and everything (which was fun to poke to see what would happen). Before I go down a rabbit hole, I wanted to check in with the team about what the best way to select items would be and if defs should or should not ever be selected in this manner (I'm looking at you xml-tree-editor). [Tracing] First steps/progress and some images

Hello ppl, I just finished the task for week 2 from my proposed timeline<http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/project/google/gsoc2013/vinipsmaker/48002>. This task was related to create a graph from an input image. This graph will be used by later steps in the Kopf/Lischinski algorithm. I'm attaching a zip file containing 4 input images and a set of output images representing the intermediate steps of the graph generation. There is a README.txt file inside this zip with further information. The next step of the algorithm is to improve this graph further more with three heuristics.
