Perfect bound cover extension on Windows.

When I installed Inkscape 48.4 on two different kinds of Linux and tried to use the: extensions-->render-->perfect-bound book cover template I got a message that I had to install an additional piece of software to use that function. This is no big deal to experienced linux users but might be for Windows users. So for the 0.48.4 version of Inkscape.exe, does this situation also exist with respect to the perfect-bound book cover feature? I have a Windows 7 partition up but haven't been able to convince it to talk to my router yet. And the handy-dandy router install disk is for an earlier version of Windows. (Sound familiar?) I can't just download the inkscape.exe via linux and move it over to the Windows partition. (Tried that trick too. Wouldn't execute.) So I can't test it myself. If anyone has tried the combination of recent inkscape, installed on Windows, and the perfect-bound cover feature I would appreciate hearing from them. -- John Culleton Wexford Press

toxic SVG for dumpAsText() in Layout-TNG-Output.cpp

While debugging I found that the dumpAsText() method is sensitive to some legal, but not very useful SVG constructs. Constructs Inkscape created for some reason or other. For instance, this: <text xml:space="preserve" style="font-size:16px;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;font-weight:bold;font-stretch:normal;line-height:125%;letter-spacing:0px;word-spacing:0px;fill:#000000;fill-opacity:1;stroke:none;font-family:FreeSans;-inkscape-font-specification:Sans Bold" x="929.79449" y="173.63014" id="text3112" sodipodi:linespacing="125%" transform="translate(0,377.35975)"><tspan sodipodi:role="line" id="tspan3114" x="929.79449" y="173.63014" /><tspan sodipodi:role="line" id="tspan3126" x="929.79449" y="193.63014" /></text> blows up in dumpAsText, if that is method is included in the code for debugging purposes. The problem is that for the empty spans the "input_stream_first_character" iterator on the empty spans cannot be dereferenced without a segfault, and that is exactly what happens here: snprintf(line, sizeof(line), " %d: '%c' 0x%4.4x x=%f flags=%03x glyph=%d\n", char_index, *iter_char, *iter_char, _characters[char_index].x, *u.uattr, _characters[char_index].in_glyph); Regards, David Mathog mathog@...1176... Hello everyone. I'm new to the list and wanted to introduce myself and talk about why I'm here. I developed a Python software for creating artistic and functional printed circuit boards. It's open source (Apache License) and based around JSON, SVG, and Gerber output (the latter for lack of any other more manageable alternative). I use Inkscape to draw the routing, and to move instantiated components around (everything else is created from information stored in JSON files). Before I continue, here's more info and some nice pictures: http://bitbucket.org/boldport/pcbmode http://boldport.blogspot.com My development mindset up to now was to not modify Inkscape or require plugins, and to use only what is strictly necessary, or what I cannot reasonably implement myself (auto-routing, complex SVG manipulation, etc.). This might need to change, as I'm realising that in order to make PCBmodE more useful to other people, it needs to be more tightly integrated with Inkscape. So I'm here to discuss the possibilities and hear your thoughts, advice, and criticisms. GSoC 2013 Project Idea | Mayank Dehgal

Hello! I am Mayank Dehgal, a student from IIT Bombay, India, currently a second year undergraduate in the Computer Science department. I am interested in working with Inkscape for GSoC. I have used Inkscape to present the designs of 2D games and animations I have created. I have been thinking for long about using the generated svg file for creating a 2D game engine, or for animating certain rigid bodies. Since the svg file is an xml file, we just store the information of different structures in the file. I have been using Box2D ( 2D physics engine) lately, and we just declare different bodies with their positions, gravity, density, shape, so that the physics engine uses the information and runs the simulation. I plan on adding various properties to the svg file through additions in the User Interface, and then using it with Box2D to create simulations and 2D games. Please give me feedback and suggestions regarding this idea. Thank you.

Build and hard link

Hey Devs, and more specifically Super Ted, I'm trying to come up with a script to process some of these merge requests more effectively. I've been keeping a trunk branch handy which is re-made each new pull so I have something up to date enough to work from and not have to wait for huge builds. So, I thinks to myself, maybe if I used bzr correctly and did a `bzr branch trunk bug174678 --hardlink`, ran the autogen and then hardlinked over all the .o files from trunk, I'd have a reasonable starting point. Turns out it's not that simple and make just wants to rebuild everything in the new branch anyway. I'm guessing it's checking some prerequisite's date stamp and I'm just not making sure it's touched. DBus api signals

Hi, I have to produce a "plugin" for Inkscape. Python extension functionnalities are not enough for what I want to do so I came to try the DBus Api. With this one, I can communicate from my plugin to Inkscape but not in the other way. The only implemented signal is "ObjectMoved" but I need to know when Inkscape modifies a node, adds an attribute or things like that. I look after the dbus extension code and it seems that the signals that I want are described in proposed-interface.xml and are not yet implemented. Is there any way to achieve what I want to do? Is there further development forecast for dbus extension? Is this possible to propose eventually patch? Thanks for the reply

GSoC 2013: Unit Handling

Hello, My name is Matthew Petroff, and I am an undergraduate at Johns Hopkins University majoring in Physics and Computer Science. I've used Inkscape for about six years, and have also created SVG files by hand. I've been involved with FOSS for a few years now, namely Hugin [1] and, more recently, FontForge [2], mainly as a builder. For Google Summer of Code, I would like to improve unit handling in Inkscape. It is my understanding that Inkscape's current unit handling is scattered across the code base in various locations, and from personal experience, I know Inkscape's unit handling could use improvement. To start, I would refactor all of Inkscape's unit handling into one centralized location. I would then extend this unit handling to allow for easier use of "real" units, e.g. millimeters, both on the document wide level and for individual objects, as has already been outlined in a blueprint [3]. Hi there, I removed those c++11 parts now and went on with c++ifying the SPEventContexts. These were even easier to convert, I should have started with them. As far as I can tell, Inkscape did not get any slower and memory consumption even decreased a bit. At least that's what /usr/bin/time -v inkscape -z share/examples/car.svgz -e car.png says. question about memory leaks
