The code and icons for these buttons were FINE in 0.46. The icons.svg images are pretty clear about what the functions should do, and there's no reason to swap their positions or meanings. The IDs in the icons.svg got swapped and the hicolor icons were named after the swapped IDs. Please revert your fix, and test it to make sure it (1) matches the 0.46 look and behavior, (2) has tooltips to match the function and appearance of icons, (3) fully works whether using the hicolor icons or the icons.svg, (4) follow up on launchpad when making behavior changes in code. -- [ e d @ h a l l e y . c c ]

Docked dialogs

I'm pretty sure I suggested these before, and if I'm not mistaken I was told there were some implementation problems. But I think these are really important, so here I go again, perhaps someone can come up with a technical solution. I have some issues with the docked dialogs. The first issue is that the dock status doesn't stick across sessions. I always have to re-open them whenever I start a new instance, open an existing file, etc. And in my work process, I always need the fill&stroke and the layers docks open, so I have to re-open the two docks and then adjust the size of the layers dialog (because by default it opens at only two layers height, even if there's a lot of free space to open it in a larger size). Is there no possibility of somehow keeping their status in the inkscape config or the specific file properties? The second problem is the width of the docks. The fill&stroke is excessively large! I have a resolution of 1280X1024 and it still take a HUGE chunk of space. and all the widgets are so large you can barely fit two docked dialogs in the same screen. if you compare that to other applicaitons - Photoshop, BLender, Gimp - you'll see that usually widgets on graphic apps are smaller. This way an artist can keep many open dialogs and still have a large canvas to work on. Lastly, is it possible to add a "layers" button to the main toolbar, to open the layers dialog? We have an "align" button and an "xml editor" button, I'm sure the layers dialog is important enough to also have a button. Tooltips in 0.47

Hi, I've been working on the FM Inkscape Manual which is now focussing on release 0.47 of Inkscape. and while using the development version of inkscape I've noticed that the tooltips for the various tool bars in inkscape no longer include the keyboard shortcuts. The shortcuts were included in the tooltips for the .46 release and I have found these extremely useful in learning the keyboard shortcuts. Also when markers like arrowheads are added to a stroke can the colour be changed? When I change the stroke colour of a path, the markers always remain 'black' when I want them to be the same colour as the stroke. I've managed to do a workaround to add colour to arrowheads, but the path looses it's flexability when I do this. If there is not currently a way that the stroke marker colours can be changed at present, I think this would be a good feature to add to inkscape. Cheers, John Curwood

NEW: PDF import font name translation

(thanks to patch 179589) A new checkbox on the PDF import dialog, "Replace PDF fonts with closest-named installed fonts" (on by default) attempts to replace all font names in the imported PDF with the most similar names of those fonts installed on your system. For example, if the PDF uses the font "TimesNewRomanPSMT" and you have "Times New Roman" installed, that font will be used, which will likely give you a more correct appearance than the unknown font "TimesNewRomanPSMT" that will be displayed as the default sans serif font. This is a temporary fix necessary because Inkscape cannot yet extract the fonts from the PDF files it imports nor can it embed them into SVG; when it gets these capabilities, such font name conversion will become unnecessary because all fonts will be preserved. -- bulia byak Inkscape. An eraser tool for Inkscape

I dreamed of it for a long time : a non destructive eraser tool ! Take a look at its possibilities in the attached file. Simply draw a white line on top of any shape or object (better with deep color for the first try). Then group the two objects and apply the filter ; the white line becomes completely transparent. If applied on a group which includes images or light colors, you can adjust the opacity with the second color matrix : for example enter 10 and -9 as the two last numbers in the last row below. Then if you select the white object with Ctrl+Click, you can modify it, move its nodes, or press Shift and draw new lines, or apply a distortion or any other filter... The possibilities are infinite. Of course not absolutely perfect but already very usable. It's not made to replace the Object/Mask feature but it can complete it. Enjoy ! ivan

layers dialog

Since we are talking about dialogs :) Mental, a while back you added a tab to Layers dialog that says "Layers". It's the only tab there. Are you planning to add some functionality to the dialog for 0.47? If not, maybe it would be wise to revert this change? As it is now, the dialog doesn't look like the rest of the dialogs. Alexandre

PerspectiveObject / Envelope Effect

Hello, I am very interested in the PerspectiveObject feature that is mentioned in the roadmap for milestone 15 / Inkscape 0.49. Has the implementation already started? Couldn't find any information. Also, the link to the example on the wiki seems to be broken. Does anyone know what it was showing? Perhaps I might get my hands on a developer machine in a few weeks, so I might be able to help out. In the meantime, I'd like to try and fix the Python implemented envelope effect. It looks like it's only using the corners of the envelope for the perspective, but doesn't take any curved sides into account. Text split / merge tool.

I've made a simple extension (just lxml twiddling) which, given a selection of a single svg:text or svg:flowRoot, splits it up into separate svg:texts, or, given a selection multiple svg:texts and/or svg:flowRoots, merges them into one svg:text. Splitting in merging appears to the user to be line oriented (actually xpath is collecting flowParas ans tspans). Really handy when you have a list of labels as a single text and want to split them into separate objects quickly. Is it worth including in the distribution (either before or after .47) and if so what should I do with it? And if not, is there somewhere else I should put it? Cheers -Terry

Hello JiHo, I tried to roll back to version 0.44 and to version 0.45 on Mac OS X. I also installed the X11 packaged on under the name X11User_Tiger_intel.dmg at http://inkscape.modevia.com/macosx-snap/?M=D And deleted the mentioned directory each time I rolled back to a previous version and after I installed the X11(prior to rolling back). I still have disconnected Arabic letters - even when I past them from the outside. The thing is that I had a good Arabic support, with connected letters either on 0.44 or on 0.45 (or on both). What could have happened? Any clues? Thanks! Hi all, Inspired by Hofstadter's GEB, I made a new LPE called "recursive skeleton" (for want of a better name !!!!!!). It takes the original path, and puts it along the parts of the original path.
