GConf integration needs some additional thought and community input before deciding whether to have it or not, so I have a question about another good technology, GIO. Milestone 0.47 in the roadmap has GTK 2.12 listed in the dependencies. GTK 2.12 in turn depends on Glib 2.16 (at least on Ubuntu Hardy), which includes GIO. In fact with the next version, GTK 2.14, the build fails if giomm-2.4 is not added to configure.ac, because gtkmm-2.4 depends on it. So it looks like everything is in place to use it. Can we start making use of GIO now, or do we have to wait some more until it's more commonplace in Linux distributions? [PATCH] Fedora MinGW cross-compiling patch, version 2

This is the second version of the patch to get Inkscape to cross-compile from Fedora MinGW. (1) I've tested that this doesn't break the build on Linux. (2) You cannot set INKSCAPE_CFLAGS in the Win32 test, because then PKG_CHECK_MODULES(INKSCAPE, ...) refuses to update this variable. Thus I introduced a separate WIN32_CFLAGS variable. (3) You need to check for fontconfig before checking for Xft. Otherwise the cross-compiler erroneously picks up the platform native version of Xft, which leads to incorrect linker flags. (4) Use g_getenv / g_setenv instead of getenv / setenv. (5) is_os_vista no longer needs to be commented out. [PATCH] Export to relative paths

Hello! I've uploaded a small patch which fixes Launchpad bugs #168715 and #171869. The patch makes Inkscape treat paths in the Bitmap Export dialog relative to the document's location rather than the current working directory. This allows the user to enter paths like "../css/bitmap.png" and have them work as expected. Help with result viewer for rendering tests appreciated

As you may have seen I put up a simple result viewer for the rendering test results. It's based on Google Web Toolkit and JSON. Both quite new to me, and there are quite some things that could be done, so if anyone is interested in helping out that would be great. Some things I'd love to have in the result viewer: - Better/clearer presentation, for example coloring the results to make it easier to locate them visually. - Some filters for showing only changed results (regressions or improvements) or only specific results (just the New results for example). - Links to the actual input/output images (and difference images?). - Perhaps group the test cases in a tree (they are already categorized to some extent). - Anything else that will make it easier to track Inkscape's quality. Also, if anyone has any other bright ideas about how to process the test result data, let's hear it. Color gestures widget idea

There was a discussion about the color gestures recently. I have an idea how to make them more usable and discoverable. The basic idea is to display a small strip with a gradient under the cursor. To understand what I mean check out any recent version of GIMP or GThumb, load up an image too big to fit in the window and see what happens when you drag on the small four-way arrow in the lower right-hand corner of the window. Instead of a thumbnail, a color gradient corresponding to the setting that is currently being adjusted would be displayed. The feature would be activated by dragging on a small widget with a two-way arrow superimposed over a color circle or a gradient. The appearance of the icon could change depending on what is adjusted (H/S/L) but that's optional. Why this idea is an imporvement over the current gesture functionality: First, it will be much easier to get the color you want quickly. Second, it will be more discoverable. Third, the widget could be reused to pop up similar icons on the canvas to allow the user to e.g. adjust the color of a gradient node (there would be something that enables them, maybe a separate tool, to minimize visual pollution). I believe the "everything on canvas" paradigm is superior to "tweak values in dialogs" and one of the things Inkscape does right, so expanding on-canvas functionality seems to be a good idea to me. [PATCH] Allow inkscape to be cross-compiled from Fedora to Windows using MinGW

Hi, I'm doing the Fedora MinGW project[1], where we are building up a cross-compiler and comprehensive set of libraries so we can build Windows software from Fedora. Mostly inkscape "just works". Install the dependent libraries such as gtkmm etc. from our yum repo[2], then: PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/i686-pc-mingw32/sys-root/mingw/lib/pkgconfig \ ./configure --host=i686-pc-mingw32 \ --enable-lcms=no \ --without-gnome-vfs make With this command and the patches below I built 'inkscape.exe', and did some limited testing, and it appears to run under Wine >= 1.1.6. (Note that at no point is MS Windows required). The patches and specfile we use are in our development repository[3], and also attached to this email. (a) mingw32-inkscape-20081027-no-gc-version-check-when-crosscompiling.patch You cannot run programs when cross-compiling (not even if you have Wine). This first patch disables a test for the version of libgc which relied on running a test program. (b) mingw32-inkscape-20081027-extra-win32-objects.patch I'm not quite sure why, but a load of Win32 source files are apparently missing from the Makefile.am's. It should be safe to add these for all platforms, as long as the sources files themselves are surrounded by #ifdef WIN32 ... #endif. (c) mingw32-inkscape-20081027-no-is-os-vista.patch The code uses a function called 'is_os_vista' that doesn't seem to exist. Maybe this was added to a new version of some dependency? (d) mingw32-inkscape-20081027-pango-enable-engine.patch Some files don't compile unless you define PANGO_ENABLE_ENGINE. I didn't look into this very deeply, but certainly defining this symbol at the top of the affected files fixes this. (e) mingw32-inkscape-20081027-no-setenv.patch This is a hack we use to remove a reference to 'setenv' because that API doesn't exist on Windows. I hope you find this useful, and maybe you can use it to automate builds and tests on the Windows version. Rich. Hello Krzysztof, Using a pre-compiled rev. 20019 on XP, I run into an assertion when I select a few objects and hit ctrl-shift-a to align them: ERROR:src/preferences.cpp:470:Inkscape::XML::Node* Inkscape::Preferences::_getNode(const Glib::ustring&, bool): assertion failed: <pref_key.at(0) == '/') Is this related to your refactoring? hotkeys indication

Hi, Recently I discovered that quite a number of users are not aware of mnemonic hotkeys for tools. That is, looking at tools tooltips they only see Fn hotkeys (SVN version doesn't show even them) and they have no idea that mnemonic keys are available. And they don't read http://inkscape.org/doc/keys.html especially since it's not available offline. Thus the question: in case we will still show hotkeys in tooltips in stable 0.47, should we show both? E.g. "Create 3D boxes (Shift+F4, x) or "Create 3D boxes (Shift+F4 or x) Alexandre
