GSoC08: Tech Drawing ideas (comments very welcome)

Hi, unfortunately I haven't yet received any response to my other emails, so I don't know if there is a potential mentor for any of them or if they are suitable for a SoC project at all. In any case, I have written up some thoughts regarding the facilitation of geometric constructions/tech drawing in Inkscape. They can be found here: http://www.rzuser.uni-heidelberg.de/~malbert/tech_drawing/ It's a draft and not complete yet (but all I could manage alongside studying for my graduation exam). I would very much appreciate any input/comments/suggestions/criticism. Would any of the potential mentors be willing to supervise such a project? Thank you very much in advance for any feedback, Max P.S.: I'd still love to elaborate on my 3D-related ideas but I feel they are much less straightforward to implement so I'd need advice from more experienced developers regarding feasibility/desirability and on which things to concentrate before going into more detail.

Teaser: Inkscape goes 3D

Hi, here is the first pay-off of my 3D box refactoring after last GSoC. I'm proud to introduce Inkscape's first diffident steps into the 3rd dimension: Perspective paths. :) The new feature is implemented as a Live Path Effect, and contrary to what I had expected it's actually quite usable. ;-) Here is a screenshot of what it looks like with some text added to the two sides of a 3D box: http://www.rzuser.uni-heidelberg.de/~malbert/images/teaser_3D_LPE.png Note that the original path is still editable (also note Johan's great new feature of highlighing paths!). The effect can take as input any path but if you want to give it a try then it's probably best to use it with text first (converted to paths, of course) because this makes it easier to interpret the visual result. Please keep in mind that it's only meant as a proof-of-concept. The UI needs to be refined, functionality to be added, and above all the perspective is not yet interactively adaptable (mainly because LPEs can't take arbitrary SPObjects as parameters); at present the effect just grabs the first existing perspective from the document. So a workaround would be to draw a 3D box, modify its perspective and reapply the LPE to the path. It should then use the updated perspective (provided that it's the first one occurring in the document defs). I need to drastically reduce the time invested for coding and mailing list interaction (as much fun as it is), otherwise I risk my remaining exams to badly go down the drain, which I really don't want to happen.

Inkscape 0.46 Win32 Released

Great news. Today the stable release of Inkscape 0.46 Win32 is up on sourceforge. Thanks to many who tested and several who fixed bugs. This release has been a real team effort. I don't think there's much left to do there, except for some GUI related stuff (dialogs, snapping indicator, etc.), and calculating additional midpoints and such. It will probably take me a few months, but that's only because my time is limited. It is not very challenging. If you'd like to work on the snapping, then you should work on the path-to-path snapping. This will be a significant amount of work. IMO you could go either of two ways for this: - build a general path-to-path snapping framework, which is available anywhere (node editor, creating new shapes, selector tool). This is what we also have for the point-to-point/path snapping - or limit it to specific tools, e.g. perpendicular snapping only in the Freehand / Bezier tools, not in the selector tool's transformations. I think the former would be quite ambitious, don't know it it's really possible, also because I haven't thought about it very long yet. The latter would give more chance of achieving something, step by step. Diederik

Call for help: Screenshots needed for 0.46

As we're nearing the release, we need more screenshots to show off the new features in 0.46, to be published at http://inkscape.org/screenshots/index.php?lang=en. Use the information on that page and the best of the existing screenshots in our gallery as inspiration. Import locale problem

I've installed lxml. First I installed it into the python path for inkscape (C:\program files\inkscape\python\...) but that did not work. Apparently inkscape is using the main python install (C:\Python25), so I reinstalled it there and it worked. The scripts work now, but still have a major annoyance. The scripts constantly complain about importing 'locale'. It seems that the module search path is causing it to first find 'C:\Program Files\Inkscape\locale', and not the 'C:\Python25\Lib\locale.py'. It only emits a warning (every time the script executes), and the script still works, but it is annoying. Since I don't need the locales I just removed the inkscape locale folder, but I still figure I'd report the problem. Brian Vanderburg II

Inkscape in the press

I think we should start an "In the press" page, like on the OpenOffice site. For instance - Inkscape 0.46 has been given a "Softpedia pick 5/5"; http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Graphic/Graphic-Editors/Inkscape.sh… They say "Awards are given to products that we think are excellent and above average in their category. Awards are given based on our experience and judgement, and only to products which the majority of our reviewers agree deserve it." So they think Inkscape is "excellent and above average" in its category. But we all knew that.
