Hi all, Google has officially announced the 2008 summer of code project this year. Project applications will be accepted starting March 3rd. A first step is to gather ideas of projects for students. To do this, if you have an idea, please register it as a blueprint in launchpad: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/inkscape/ When I submit our application, I will be using the blueprints as the source of ideas for projects, so please help post project ideas there. Also, if you are willing to mentor the project, please indicate it in launchpad via the 'Offer mentorship' link on the blueprint page. Hi all, I am hoping to try and get in on GSoC again this year because it would seem that having it as a "job" is the only way to ensure I have time to contribute during school (boooo!). Ideally, what I would like to do is continue with the font work I was doing before; that is, trying to support non-CSS fonts. This would require the ability to contribute and change Pango, and I have no idea if they would want to do that. So I will soon try to talk to those guys and see what they think. If that doesn't work out, I would be interested in working on anything text, including UI if so desired. Think about what items might be desired and that are GSoC'able (something like underlines, for example, has the potential to be too much to get something bug free ready, not sure). As a tref update, I have at least narrowed down the problems to be between a couple of my unrelated commits. Good in the sense that it probably means I didn't create the issue, but bad because that makes it that much harder to find the exact cause. Will be spending some more time compiling and recomipling tonight. Gail

How to change notification settings in Launchpad?

Hi all, sorry if this is a dumb question but how can I change my Launchpad settings so that I do not receive an email each time someone works on one of the bugs? Is this the default behaviour for members of the "Inkscape Bug Team" group? Currently I am sent a notification for each and every change, but I'd prefer not to get my inbox flooded and rather browse the list myself when appropriate. It may be just my infamiliarity with Lauchpad (and lack of time for detailed investigation), but I wasn't able to find out how turn this off. Thanks in advance. Max

Speaking of GSoC work needing polishing... It has recently come to my attention that the tref elements are not working. To be honest, I am very surprised because the last time I looked at this, which was when I committed the work 6+ months ago, it was working. Not sure what happened or when. I think it is very important to fix this for the release, as I had entered release notes and provided samples way back when. I am looking at this over the next few days and will submit a patch that could be tested and hopefully submitted to the release branch. I was just wondering - is there any way to know when it stopped working? For example, are the SVG compliance test results archived, and if so where? It should have passed sometime in the summer and stopped since then (if it never passed then I'll be really worried!). Thanks! Gail

Proposal: Inkscape 0.47 Extensions Package

I've been kicking this idea around since the last release, and would like to put it out for discussion for us to do in 0.47... Extensions have proven to be a great way for people to contribute new ideas to the project, but unfortunately the maturity, quality, and maintenance put into the extensions can vary quite a bit. Unfortunately, a consequence is that they complicate our core Inkscape codebase releases. * Old extensions sometimes break, but their original developers aren't available to fix them. It's a regression, but is it important enough to block the release? * Extensions are quick to write, yet having to wait a full Inkscape development cycle to get them formally distributed to users seems rather excessive. * While extensions won't make Inkscape crash, they certainly can have serious bugs, but it's currently hard to roll fixes out to users. We wouldn't roll a new point-release of inkscape just to fix extension bugs. It seems that a logical solution would be to establish an inkscape extensions package separate from the Inkscape core, that could be released with more or less frequency, as appropriate. Along with that would be an 'unstable' extension package, that would contain scripts not as ready. I think our existing release processes could handle this additional package; it'd just be one additional piece to rev and upload. However, I would love to see a new team of extension writers form around this and take ownership of maintaining it and producing releases as appropriate (and hopefully more frequently than the core codebase). New win32 lib bundle with Dwarf2

Hi, all, I just uploaded a new lib bundle on the server. It has been over a year since I last updated the C++ libs. I also have wanted for months to move from the existing setjump/longjump (sjlj) exception handling to the new (to MinGW) Dwarf2 EH. Gcc has had Dwarf2 for years, but only recently has MinGW started providing it. It should allow better backtraces and slightly smaller binaries. I made a build with it manually this morning: http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32/Inkscape-0710221807-dw2.7z I assembled some MinGW binaries to make this working compiler: http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32libs/mingw-4.2.1-071022-dw2.7z ...and here is the new bundle. http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32libs/gtk210-071022-dw2.7z Note that the C++ compiler, library bundle, and Inkscape build must all be either sjlj or Dwarf2. You can't mix them, else there will be a linking error. I also added a version of build.xml to the trunk to handle this, build-dw2.xml. This should keep from breaking everyone else's build. To use it: ./btool -f build-dw2.xml Of course there is a corresponding cross-compiler: http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32libs/xmingw-4.2.1-dw2.tar.bz2 ...which made this build, which looks ok, but I haven't run yet: http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32/Inkscape0710230156.7z It looks larger, but none of the DLLs have been stripped yet. From now on, all of the "autobuilds" there will be Dwarf2. Probably in a couple of weeks when everyone catches up, it will become the default. Have fun! ishmal(bob)

These hook scripts are very powerful, but due to the implementation of hook scripts in SVN, projects are not permitted full control over them. This is quite a large change from how CVS handles pre- and post- commit scripts. Accordingly, SourceForge.net makes available to projects specific scripts which may be of use to hosted projects. The following scripts are available for your use: * svnnotify: Sends email notifications of changes made during a SVN commit. Two versions of this hook script are available, one that includes a diff of the changes, and one that doesn't. * check-case-insensitive.py: Checks to make sure filenames are valid for a case insensitive environment (Windows, for example) * check-mime-type.pl: Checks to ensure a mime-type property is set for files added to the repository * ciabot_svn.py: Reports commit activity to cia.navi.cx.

Mac OS X printing/packaging issue...

Hi all, I've been using the 0.46pre2 release on os X 10.4.11 PPC for a few days now and am having issues with printing using the .app bundle generated by the included bundling script. Here is the scenario: After building from source I can run the compiled binary (not the packaged .app) from the command line and printing works as expected. However after using the included script (osx-app.sh) to bundle the binary into a double-click-able .app the print dialog shows no printers. I've also tried launching the binary inside the .app from the command line (i.e. inkscape.app/Contents/MacOS/Inkscape) but the same issue with the print dialog exists. It seems that this is most likely an issue with the packaging script, but I could be wrong. I can provide more info if you let me know what you would be useful.
