Dear Devs, I was recently at DevConf Boston, networking and hob-nobbing with the RedHat crowd that we got to know at the hackfest earlier this year. One of the interesting things I noticed was how projects are standardising their stickers on a hexagonal fixed size design to encourage people to stick each of the project's stickers together into a grid on their computer lids. http://hexb.in/ Food for thought if we decide to make user grade sticker packs for events. Location path for an imported figure

Dear All, I am finding `Inkscape` a really good tool for importing `PDF` or `EPS` scientific plots into a blank page, and then place arrows on top of the graphs, text, make scientific drawings assemble them in the desired location and then save as a unique PDF page that can then be included as a unique `figure` in a `latex` document. Let's imagine an inkscape project that has assembled 10 plots, imported from these folders: /path1/plot_1.pdf /path2/plot_2.pdf ... /path10/plot_10.pdf We already know that in /path1/ there is also the python, gnuplot, etc source code that produces the PDF plot, for instance: /path1/plot_1.py /path2/plot_2.gnu etc Most of the times I need to continue working over the original PDF plots that I once imported into a inkscape project I made back in time. For example, change the scale and the title of the plots, and so on. In other words, I need to go to the original source code (gnuplot, python, etc) that produces those plots that have been assembled in the inkscape project. In these situations, while having the nice inkscape project in the screen with all the plots 1 to 10, it is quite hard to remember where is the location of the original PDF plot. As far as I am concerned, there is no option in the inkscape interface that allows you to know which is the original location path of the PDF plot that was once imported into the inkscape project. The closest solution I could find is the following: every time I import a new PDF of EPS, I right click and and create a link which is basically a copy-paste of the location path of the figure. This solution is quite tedious and most of the times one forgets to create the link. Once the image is imported, the next natural step is to resize it and locate in the desired place, and it is very easy to forget to create the link. For instance, if this multi PDF plots assemble project was made in Latex, the location path of all the plots would be perfectly identified, i.e. in the `\includegraphics` line. I was wondering if it is possible to check an option in the importing process that would allow to automatically write the location path of the figure somewhere. Or any other strategy that would automatically write the location path every time a plot is imported. Would this be difficult to implement ? Thanks a lot for all your help, All the best, David

XDG basedir specification

Hi all, Freedesktop has a few specifications and standards for interoperability of stuff ( https://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Specifications/ ) , and I wanted to ask in particular about the base dir specification : "How desktops should locate files, such as config files or application data files." ( https://specifications.freedesktop.org/basedir-spec/latest/ but in particular https://specifications.freedesktop.org/basedir-spec/latest/ar01s03.html ) It basically set rules as to where users should lookup stuff. Currently on unix we put everything userspace in .config/inkscape (|$XDG_CONFIG_HOME|), even when some of it would more adequately be described as data (assets) and, according to the spec, be put in a share/ directory such as .local/share (|$XDG_DATA_HOME|) which is already the case for systemwide assets (assets are in /usr/(local/)share/, not in /etc/xdg/). So, the first question is the following : Do we want (1) to follow the XDG dir spec and keep themes/, ui/, keys/, icons/ and preferences (which can be described as user-specific things to customize the program behavior or appearance) in |$XDG_CONFIG_HOME| but put assets (symbols, templates, palettes, extensions) in |$XDG_DATA_HOME| ? or (2) keep everything in .config because it might be less confusing or simpler to explain NB: On windows, it's the same place (%appdata%) but we can think about moving stuff to %localappdata%, wherever it is. Also (maybe a more minor point, but what prompted me to lookup the spec in the first place) the "logical" place to put autosaves (not to be mixed up with crash saves) would be (in my opinion) |$XDG_CACHE_HOME| ("Where user-specific non-essential data should be written") but on windows that defaults to the absurd ~\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ so I was thinking of using |$XDG_DATA_HOME |but if everything stays in .config (option 2) I'll put that there. -- Mc

Friends of Inkscape - A program for individuals and small businesses who want to promote Inkscape

There has been an increase in people within the project wanting to give back to Inkscape in the form of donating a percentage of their earnings from Inkscape courses, tutorials, artwork sales, etc. It's my opinion that we should support this, however like any other public sponsorship of Inkscape, I believe donations of this sort should have some rules to ensure there is no conflict of interest. Here is a brief summary of the sponsorship rights and responsibilities which I think should take effect if the Inkscape Project will be helping with promotion of sales where a percentage is going to the project: 1. Neutrality: The Inkscape project will not play favourites amongst internal and external sponsors who join as Friends of Inkscape. 2. Transparency: In the case of promotional releases (Facebook, Twitter, G+ etc.), the Inkscape project will make clear the rules and guidelines of using the Inkscape Project's namesake for promotion, keep a tally of funds donated by the sponsor on our website. 3. Non-endorsement policy: Verbiage for press releases should make it clear that the Inkscape Project does not necesarilly endorse the content or views of the sponsor, and the sponsorship is to be treated purely as a fund-raising exercise to benefit the project. Moreover that the sponsor is solely responsible for delivering the product. 4. Quality - The Inkscape project should, before accepting any co-sponsorship agreement, ensure that the products being offered or sold is of sufficient quality, and provide real value to the Inkscape community (basically that the items are worth buying, and not just a scheme to make as much profit as possible without offering sufficient value to the buyers). 5. Commitment - The sponsor should be able to follow up on what they are selling and maintain a good customer satisfaction rating on their chosen commercial platform. The Inkscape Project should take into account the history, ratings, and reviews for products sold by the sponsor to protect Inkscape users. 6. Ongoing - If the project determines at any time that the sponsor is not keeping up with their promised delivery of goods, or the quality or content of the products being sold is not adequate, the project reserves the right to cancel at any time, and for any reason the sponsorship agreement. 7. For-Profit Only - These terms only apply to sponsors who wish the Inkscape Project to advertise these co-sponsorship deals. For example an Inkscape press release could read: "Help raise money for Inkscape, while learning from the professionals! XXXX is generously donating 50% from this professional tutorial course to fund development of Inkscape! Thanks XXXX!) These terms do not apply to folks who just want to donate without any press releases from the Inkscape Project. 8. Honesty - Obviously, we should ensure that sponsors follow up on the promise to donate the stated funds to the Inkscape Project. We can encourage this with a running-total press release, for example: "Donations from XXXX's Inkscape course just passed the £10,000.00 mark! Our next hackfest is fully funded!" etc. 9. Ending a sponsorship - When the sponsor wishes to end the sponsorship deal, it should be made clear that funds are no longer going to the Inkscape Project. This can be done with a thank you press release, like this: XXXX has raised a total of £150,000.00 for Inkscape's development. On behalf of the Inkscape Project, we'd like to thank XXXX for this generous donation and wish them good luck on future projects. Any thoughts are welcome. :) Thanks for your attention! -C

Hackfest Kiel: Survey results

Hi there, Hackfest Attendees, these are the results of our little survey: - Almost everyone voted to have the Hackfest dinner close by, at TraumGmbh. I reserved a table for Sunday Sept. 9th, 6:30 pm. They serve vegetarian, German/Austrian, Italian, other international cuisine. Sometimes, they have a menu of the day that is halal (but that's a day-to-day thing, nothing to rely on) and also a couple of local dishes with fish. Menu: https://www.traumgmbh.de/?wpdmdl=21616 - Most of us want to attend the Kitz barbecue on Tuesday evening. Vegetarian options are available there, too. I have informed the Kitz manager of the approximate number of persons. - Everyone who is still there on Wednesday has selected the Museum option, so I have confirmed the reservation there. I will also ask our Kielux crowd if any of them would be interested to join us (the price will drop then). I have also asked a historian friend if she would like to be our city guide. As it's in the morning, probably there won't be many others who would have time then, though. As for the questions that were submitted: - What you need to bring: - voltage-compatible electronics with an adapter for German electricity sockets - if your device cannot use VGA or HDMI cables for feeding the projector, you will need to bring an adapter for one of those, too - enough cash (in Euro) to pay for your lunch (~7-10 €/day) and for the museum visit (~ 10 €), bus/ferry fares (?), voluntary Kitz barbecue payment (10 €) and any souvenirs etc. you need to buy. Many of the smaller shops in Germany do not accept cards, and many have a minimum amount for paying with a credit card! - I think this could be a fun: If you still have space left in your baggage you could bring a favourite or typical snack (I know I'm the one who is tasked with this, but it might still be fun to see what you bring) - clothes: Up to now, we were very lucky with Kielux, as it has always been good weather with > 15°C and sunshine, so we never needed rain coats, just T-Shirt/pullover/a thin jacket. But one never knows here! Please take something windproof and watertight with you, and be prepared for temperatures between 10° in the evenings and up to 20° Celsius during the day. We often have a strong wind here! - yourself :) - You don't need to bring mugs - the Kitz has enough of them for everyone of us (I just need to remember to ask for the kitchen to be left unlocked, so we can actually get to them). - Water bottles (and other beverages) will be available. The Kitz / Kielux is going to sponsor them for the Hackfest. We may have to empty some fizzy water before we can use one of the bottles to fill the coffee machine with tap water, though ;-) Other suitable containers may be available in the kitchen - I don't really know what they have there, though. - Halal food is generally not available in non-specialized restaurants in Germany :-/ Vegetarian is widely available. In Kiel, there is a large Arab/Turkish community, which is why there are a couple of specialized shops and supermarkets, especially in the Gaarden quarter (close to the central station, just across the Hörnbrücke on the other side of the Förde). One large Arab supermarket is in walking distance to the Kitz (Sultan-Markt in Eckernförder Straße). The Döner/Turkish fastfood 'restaurants' close to Kitz might sell halal food, but I'm not sure. Let me know if you'd like me to get something specific in advance (from Sultan-Markt, then). - We have two entries that offer 3 seats in a car - one of them without a name (a couple of you haven't entered their name, but were identifiable through what they wrote ;-) - except for this one). Does anyone own up to that car/entry (the other one is Jürgen)? @doctormo and anyone else who comes by airplane: please remember to book the Kielius bus, too, to get from Hamburg to Kiel (and back). Current number of confirmed attendees: 9 Unconfirmed/unsure/in progress: 3 (Jabier, Khaled, Krzysztof - KK, are you there?) Probably not able to attend: 2 (Alex, Mihaela) One lesson for the next hackfest organizer: poke everyone as early as possible and more intensely about booking hotels!
