Hi all, I just moved the File dialog code to ui/dialog where it should be and fixed a minor error in its namespace. I adjusted the makefile_inserts for this. But let me know if this causes any problems. This is to get filedialog to fit into the dialog manager where it should be. Also, it is good to clean up before working on that Export dialog stuff we were talking about. bob

Improved rendering quality

I've modified Inkscape to render at a slightly higher quality by avoiding repeated normalizations in libnr/nr-compose.cpp. I've uploaded examples of the results to: http://home.hccnet.nl/th.v.d.gronde/about-test-old.png http://home.hccnet.nl/th.v.d.gronde/about-test-new.png http://home.hccnet.nl/th.v.d.gronde/gradient-test-old.png http://home.hccnet.nl/th.v.d.gronde/gradient-test-new.png The first two are the current "about" drawing, exported to bitmap using Inkscape 0.44 (old) and reasonably current SVN+changes to compositing (new). The second two just show the gradient in background of the "about" drawing, which shows the "problem" with current version of Inkscape more clearly (if you have a hard time spotting the difference, look for a dark band in the upper left corner in the old image, it shouldn't be there, and it isn't in the new image). Is this considered as interesting (if so, I'll try to clean up the patch and submit it to the patch tracker for review?), or will this become obsolete very quickly?

New hosting provider for Inkscape website

Hi all, A few weeks ago I mentioned that we'd be looking for new web hosting due to various problems we've had with SourceForge. For example, most of us probably noticed how atrociously slow wiki and screenshots were loading before, during, and after the release. Yesterday, the fine folks at Oregon State University's Open Source Lab (OSU-OSL) have been so kind as to give us a bare bones Xen virtual partition with gentoo, root access, and 10G of disk space. :-) http://inkscape.osuosl.org/ There's a lot left to do to get the machine set up and ready for regular use, but I've got apache up, and have directed our website to pull screenshots from the new system: http://inkscape.org/screenshots/ (Actually, the screenshots seemed to be loading fine at the time migrated them, but with SF who knows how long this'll last...) From now on, we won't have the loading problems. Next step will be to move the wiki over. This'll require setting up mysql, php, a brief downtime of the wiki, etc. which is all straightforward, but will take some time to do. As a plus, we'll be upgrading from the antique (and insecure) version 1.4.3 to the latest stable version, 1.6.7. Also, upgrading mediawiki will be considerably easier, so hopefully this'll help us stay atop the security fixes. Before we can move the remainder of the website over, we will need to set up account management tools, so we can easily provide ssh access to whomever needs it for web stuff. I'm guessing maybe a week or two? There are no plans at this time to move over anything else from SourceForge (mailing lists, svn, bug tracking, etc.) If it ain't broke... But there's no reason we can't move those things over and do them ourselves if we wish, we just need to ensure we have adequate sysadmin volunteers available to keep the services well maintained. Just a few quick notes on what I think. Simple majority: We need to make sure we agree on the definition of this. Especially how to handle abstains. Are they counted for or against or not counted at all. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simple_majority defines most of this and I think it is the definition we should use. I think there should be a seperate mailing list for votes i.e. inkscape-vote. That way votes don't get lost in the daily mails on the dev list. It also allows the record/process to be transparent to anyone wishing to see it. Board Members should be on a 1yr/2yrs cycle. "Half" of the board should start with 1 yr terms and other "half" 2yr terms. At the end of the term the the board can call for a vote of confidence and by simple majority vote be extended into the next part of the cycle. i.e. if Ricky James is at the end of his 1yr term and the majority vote succeeds he moves on to a 2yr term or if it is a 2yr term onto a 1 year term. The voting period and procedure must be announced at least 7 days prior to the voting deadline . Thanks, Joshua L. Blocher verbalshadow

SourceForge outage today

If you use SourceForge services, you may have noticed problems using SVN/CVS. SourceForge posted this message to their Status Page: ( 2006-07-13 09:23:52 - Project CVS Service, Project Shell Service, Project Subversion (SVN) Service, SourceForge.net Web Site ) A recent kernel exploit was released that allowed a non admin user to escalate privileges on the host pr-shell1. We urge all users who frequent this host to change their password immediately and check their project group space for any tampering. As a precaution, we have blocked access to all project resources by password until the user resets their password. After the password has been reset, project resources should be accessible within 5 minutes. http://sourceforge.net/docs/A04 Basically, to regain CVS/SVN/etc. access, you must change your password. This can be done here: http://sourceforge.net/account/change_pw.php After this, you will be prompted for your password once more when committing, then it'll work normally. Bryce
