SPDesktop now looks in good shape, which is good as that initially looked like the major show stopper. (Fixes thanks to rwst with some GC work from mental.) Inkboard -------- A couple of people have reported either difficulty in connecting: bryce made a bug report, and sciboy today mentioned similar problems -- see 17:52 and previous at http://inkscape.gristle.org/2005-10-11.txt. sciboy says that it works if connecting to gristle.org, but that none of jabber.org, jabber.com, or jabber.org.au work. Later that day, Michael & sciboy did get a connection. Issues: - Lots of output on the terminal, should be turned off for general use before release. (If these messages are still useful to developers, then wrap the status messages in a macro or function that does nothing in the main version but that interested developers can "switch on".) I wouldn't want to release with these status messages: e.g. because they mask real errors that we'd want to be reported. - Michael & sciboy's session got out of sync somehow: at some point sciboy cleared everything but a star was left on michael's session. Not a show-stopper: this was the only thing we were aware of being out of sync. - Undo is global, i.e. it often undoes what the other person did rather than what the undoer did. This is a usability problem, but changing this is non-trivial, so I don't consider this a show-stopper. Btw, Michael was using MacOS X, so it seems that libloudmouth works acceptably there (as well as on Linux/Gnu). I gather Windows still doesn't work acceptably well, due to threading differences. sciboy did experience a segfault later in his session with Michael (18:47 in the gristle log), though he didn't have a backtrace at the time. My feeling is that if the crash is specific to inkboard then we not consider it a show-stopper, but just make a note of it in the release notes. Connectors ---------- Progress has been made. The bug tracker no longer has any connector bugs marked with priority >= 8. We still have some strange behaviour. Michael comments: "The only known connector crash now is the one bryce reported, which I believe is fixed but he hasn't yet confirmed. I used to be able to reproduce it, but after fixing some other problems I now longer can. Once this sp_use_update fix is in that Bulia and I were just discussing (give me 20 minutes), then I think it's releasable. The other bugs are related to overlapping objects and are things I need to rework in libavoid after the release. The one remaining thing I'd like to look at if it's easy is the slowdown moving endpoints with the xml editor open." menus.xml localization ---------------------- In principle fixed (there's one huge menus-skeleton.h string to be translated), but in practice none of the translations has been updated. It would be nice if we went back to smaller strings to facilitate keeping the translations up-to-date (and so that we could re-use the existing translations). Personally I'm still inclined to treat this as a show-stopper, particularly as it looks easy enough to fix. Other ----- Sorting bug tracker items (http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=93438&atid=604306) by decreasing priority shows the following marked at priority 9: - a text-anchor regression (cyreve, can you comment?); - the corrupted about.svg problem I posted on just now; - a bunch of windows-specific bugs that I haven't looked at: I'll leave these for our Windows devs to decide on; - "unexpected printout size", where we're wrongly converting to postscript at 90px/inch or 72px/inch rather than 120px/inch. Personally I wouldn't let this one hold up the release. pjrm.

Problem compiling Inkscape from CVS

Hello, Everyone For the past few days, I have been having problems compiling Inkscape from CVS. First, the error involved pt_BR.po. I am running Fedora Core 3, fully updated. When I installed, I installed EVERY package, so there should be no issues with missing devel packages. One other thing: up until recently, I have had no problems compiling Inkscape from CVS on this computer. If you need more info from me, let me know, and I will be glad to help. Steven P. Ulrick

calligraphy tut

Hi Scislac, Thanks for updating the calligraphy tutorial. Looks nice, but I'd like to suggest a few more things: - In the Width section, you need to add at the end that width is affected by pressure, when pressure sensitivity is on, in addition to all other width controls. Also an example graphic made with pressure sensitivity would be very appropriate (please ask Popolon, he had some nice examples). - Similarly, in the Angle section you need to add that it's affected by tilt. - When done, please also generate the HTML version of the tutorial and upload it to http://inkscape.org/doc/index.php. transform dialog image

I've just commented out the image (rendered from SVG) in the Transform tab of the Transform dialog because it was blowing up the size of the dialog really badly and refused to be squeezed. I remember that before, it was squeezable, but something broke. Frankly I don't see any useful information in it, so I just killed it instead of fixing; feel free to fix properly if you disagree. Dear Inkscape Developers: First of all, thanks for such a great design program. We use it in a daily basis in a proffesional enviroment for our work. A few years ago, before Inkscape were born, I was more involved in the UI design of Sodipodi. This weekend, tidying up a bit my folders, I found this idea for Sodipodi, and I think is still a nice dialog revamp for Inkscape, so I decided to send it to you in case it serves for something else than wasting diskspace. It's a mock up based upon the Gimp brushes dialog. It has also some of Illustrator "way of design". The point is I have my swatches in my color palette where I can rename and edit them with the appropiate button. The solid, line gradient, elliptical gradient and tile gradient are just a categorization but in fact I could have all swatches I'm using in the same window (adding a [View all] button). Let's explain this further. When I need to add a swatch (plain, gradient or tile) no color or the default color is asigned to the new object. Then I select the swatch and either duplicate or edit the color in a similar dialog as actual Inkscape dialog. Also, we could have the edit swatch dialog tabbed in the one I present or attached etc. In fact, is a waste of space to have two identical tabs for doing exactly the same function, which is editing swatches or colors: the fill and the border tabs. I propose to have as a first tab the one in my mockup, the second one the editing colors one an the third one the stroke style, witdth etc one. Of course, another control to switch between fill mode or border mode should be necessary for the new tab, which could be very similar to the Gimps one (background/foreground colors). A kind of law?: Choosing a property, style or color shouldn't be in the same area of Editing that very property, style or color. It drives to errors when accidentally move a slider or change something with a slight click or the mouse wheel. Asigning a property should be in it's own area/tab/dialog and editing should be separate from it. If somebody wants me to further develop this idea, more defined mockups and actions story board, etc. (I'm sorry I can't code): Just ask me as I'm willing to improve Inkscape UI and productivity in this matter. SVG standards and Sodipodi cruft

There has been a user complaining in several reports in the bug tracker about the Inkscape SVG giving away more information than he would like and the Plain SVG not including as much information as needed and I think it raises various questions. How plain should Plain SVG be? Should it include metadata? (Based on SVG having a metadata tag I think it probably should include some form of metadata) Inkscape has as a stated goal conforming closely to the SVG specificiation but inlcudes a whole lot of information in the Sodipodi and Inkscape namespace. The stock response is this someone helps compatability with Sodipodi but is this really true anymore? Surely some of it like including the sodipodi version number is just as likely to confuse the matter? The old sodipodi docbase attribute seem like it could have been useful to avoid link breakage if a the drawing file has been moved around. Is this actually doing anything useful? Users have expressed privacy concerns as it effectively embeds the path to their homedirectory including username in every document. It seems there must be a way to express a lot more of the old sodipodi metadata using SVG (or Dublin Core or other parts of XMP we are already using). If the old timers ;) could clarify if any of this cruft is useful anymore it would make it easier to write clear bug reports and break into much smaller parts which bits might be replaced (hopefully making the same information available in Plain SVG where possible). Given the importance of the OpenDocument standard and how they are essentially using their XML namespaces to fill out gaps not covered by SVG might it be better to include their namespaces rather than adding any more to the Inkscape (or Sodipodi) namespace? I hope people can clarify what old bits are still needed and what could potentially be cleaned up and replaced with standard SVG. With a bit more information hopefully I will be able to add useful comments to bug reports and perhaps add some goals for clearing out the old non-standard cruft somewhere on the Roadmap.
