Re: [Inkscape-docs] Features + FAQ
by Brynn
Ok, yes. I'll have a look :-)
I did wonder why the extra anchor or question was made. I would have just
added a couple of extra sentences to the answer for FAQ #1.5.
The reason I have that thought, is because it is in the General section.
This is the section where we want to make Inkscape sound like a great
program. And "Why does Inkscape only export PNGs?" as a question by itself,
doesn't seem to fit with the other general type of questions. It makes it
sound like it might be a bad thing about Inkscape. It seems like it would
belong more in the How-To section, if it is a separate question. (Or maybe
it would be "How to export JPGs?")
But I understand that sometimes it is a fine line, whether a question
belongs here or there. If everyone else agrees about the organization, I'll
just check the text, and leave the format alone.
All best,
brynn

So maybe we should add it on the FAQ:
https://inkscape.org/en/learn/faq/#what-formats-can-inkscape-importexport
Explaining why it's not natively supported. Brynn, can you, please?
Reviewing the FAQ in French, I also had this wondering.
Q: How to make a transparent background or change the background color
A: […] Note, however, that an opaque background should only be
considered as a tool to aid in drawing. If you intend to ultimately
export the SVG to PNG, or use the SVG on the internet, the opaque
background might not come through. So if you intend to use the image in
such situations, you'll need to draw a large rectangle, to fit the
image/page size to place behind your drawing (on the bottom, in
z-order), and fill it with the background color you want.
Isn't the opaque background exported with PNGs?
> I'm unable to answer your other questions. (I'm not a developer.)
These are feature requests; I don't think you must be a developer to
have an opinion…

inkscape-docs / website: updated automatically?
by Maren Hachmann
@Martin: Are the docs on the website still updated automatically?
I seem to remember that last time, changes that Nicolas made were
applied to the live server rather quickly, but this time it's taking
longer than expected (> 24 hours).
For checking:
This page
https://inkscape.org/en/doc/devel/translations-statistics-trunk.html
is supposed to contain dates newer than 2016-03-20.
Would be good to have it updated (automatically?) so the translators
have a good overview over where their work is needed.
If updating them requires a manual intervention (either because the
automatical update doesn't work, or because it never was automated),
would you maybe take a look, please? (or who knows, maybe it's that
overeager caching again?)
Kind Regards,
Maren

Re: [Inkscape-docs] Hackfest 2016 page
by Sylvain Chiron
Hi all,
So I make the suggestion — :).
The English page for the Hackfest 2016 was unpublished, I re-published
it without worrying much mainly for these reasons:
* the page was still accessible in other languages;
* that was a dead link in the English navigation menu;
* I have a lack of maturity in managing community projects (as I
generally fear communication).
As Maren suggests below, this page should be moved out from the menu (I
never did such an act on the Inkscape website, I don't even know if I
have the rights to do it), and we may publish a general page about the
hackfest instead which would remain permanently accessible.
So first, someone should do the move.
Then, would you like the general page to come alive? I think that would
be a nice thing, as pages from the menu are semantically meant to be
quite static — so we could let a page and add updated information when
needed with links to news articles. Also, donations for the hackfest
seem to remain possible along the year.
Consequently, we would need someone to write that page.

Language Redirect
by Martin Owens
I've put in a 302 redirect into nginx on the website to tell it to
redirect anyone going to inkscape.org/ to inkscape.org/en/ if you
notice that the website is now always going to english on this page,
that is intended.
The background to this is that 20% of the webserver's resources were
being used redirecting people from / to their language of choice like
/de/ or /fr/ and the code and the database queries were /really/ very
bad.
Despite the loss in automatic language redirection for the landing
page, please open a bug report in lp:inkscape-web if you need this
feature. It'll take a while to write something that isn't quite so
demanding on the resources of the machine.
You should notice a slight speed improvement on the website.
