I like the idea about the seasonal motifs! (although we still have the 2
hemispheres to deal with)
Had to look up "Google doodle style artwork" (I'm not a google user). How would
we ever find out about these more or less obscure events (Kazakhstan Republic
Day showed up in my search)? You could almost put one single person whose full
time job is identifying them!
I wonder how google decides who draws the graphics? Do they just take
submissions?
Like maybe we would put certain guidelines (so that we don't end up celebrating
some rogue regime or something) and just allow people to submit them? Because
they only "run" for a day, right? I suppose we could have them up for any
amount of time we choose.

Maybe seasonal motifs would be better. Snow flakes and mittens and skis work
nicely. Maybe hot chocolate, snowball fights and other winter activities for a
secular holiday season. :) fall might see fallen leaves placed around, flowers
for spring and summer. Would be kinda cool to do a Google doodle style artwork
to celebrate specific holidays when they come up, which is in lusive rather than
exclusive, but obviously that would take a lot more work.

That's why I said "holiday" and not "Christmas" or "Hanukah" or "Kwanza" or etc.
Most all faiths and religions have some kind of winter celebration - something
for every season. It's why I also added a suggestion about doing it for
seasons, rather than holidays. Although then there's the problem with seasons,
when it's winter in the northern hemisphere, it's summer in the southern.
Usually when people decorate their website, they do it for wherever the website
lives. Because really, it's impossible to please everyone. I think as long as
it's something small, which does not appear to cram anything down anyone's
throat, it should be ok. For example, even if there's a little decoration for
spring, but it's autumn where some people live, I think it will still be seen as
a nice graphic.
But mostly, I think it would be sad if we have to say we can never decorate the
website, because it's impossible to please everyone. /That/ would be sad!
And also, I think we have to start somewhere, with getting more graphics
throughout the site.
Maybe it would be better not to have just 1 graphic? Maybe there could be a
collection of graphics which represent all the major religions or faiths, and
some kind of script serves them up at random?

The poster originally emailed me directly and I asked them to post the
image to the gallery and then post a message to the inkscape mailing
list. Mostly just to see what people were thinking.
I like the idea personally. But I see some challenges to it
professionally.
The biggest consideration for things like this is the both western
centric and perceivably christian/pagan centric traditions. If images
can be targeted, then it makes it easier to just show it for certain
countries etc. If we don't mind being a bit blustering and ham fisted
about it, then putting up a replacement image is just a matter of a
small code update to the website.
Although then you do have to look after the site later when you need it
to come down.
