CVS won't run

Hello, I've been having the same problem for quite some time; the CVS version compiles but then it doesn't run. It just hogs the cpu and nothing happens and I have to kill it. Stable version works fine. There seem to be no error messages during compilation. I've tried several times, latest was a few hours ago. If you'd like any kind of information about my system libraries etc, just ask. I'm on gentoo linux. I'd like to solve this! Thanks, Johan Forsberg

I'd like to rename configure.in to configure.ac so it's more "correct". Does anyone have any objections to this? Are there any other autoconf/make cleanups that need doing? -- Kees Cook @outflux.net

sf inkscape web directory

Well, I've been looking around at the inkscape directory, and noticed some interesting things. The SF docs say there is a 100M quota in the group area. However, the "quota" command doesn't show any configured quotas. Additionally, we're using over 200M of storage. (148M of that is the doxygen docs.) I'm worried that keeping 30 days of CVS snapshots will compound our disk utilization. (As well as possible win32 mirrors.) Unit fun

I was doing some low-level hacking on image support and DPI, and found an interesting thing Images I created in The GIMP and set to 72 DPI there came out to have a stored value of 2835 pixels per meter. On the other hand, a png that had been created in Inkscape a while back had a stored value of 2834 pixels per meter. One saved today had no chunk for DPI, at least not before the image data.

text node ids

I noticed that sometimes, <text> nodes in a document are assigned different ids on load without obvious reason - there's no id clash in the source document. I found out that this is caused by text repr nodes (i.e. text strings, not <text> elements) being assigned their own id= too, even though this id is not seen or editable anywhere and is not saved with the document. And the problem is that these text node ids also start with "text" followed by a number, and therefore can clash with <text> ids forcing them to re-id. I fixed this by making these text nodes use ids starting with "string" instead of "text". The change is in line 76 of repr.cpp. I hope this does not break anything; comments are welcome.

Snapping behavior

Hello! I'm still having a tough time with Inkscape's snapping behavior. I'm trying to use it for technical illustration, and thus I find myself moving very large chunks of my drawings around throughout the design process, and need things to line up perfectly. This is made more difficult by snapping confusion with the following points: 1. Text snapping appears to snap to all edges of a particular text block. Would there be any interest to changing this to snapping to the anchor point in the text, where you initially click the "text" cursor (the i-beam)? This would make it much easier to have the baseline for text line up -- i.e. at the moment (using the current CVS) text with letters that drop below the baseline (words like "happy") snap to the lowest point in the word (the bottom of the 'p' instead of the bottom of the 'h'). 2. Grouped objects can snap to any of the internal nodes when "snap points to grid" is enabled. But not when "snap to bounding box" is selected. What I really want (and what I think most users expect, and would most clearly emulate Illustrator's behavior -- but I could be wrong) is a "snap to the points in a group which form a convex hull around the object". Point #2 is important to me because I create lots of little EE symbols that are groups of off-grid objects, but inside of an on-grid object (think a register symbol, or anything with internal text that's smaller than the grid size). I know snapping may be a religious issue with some, and I know that someone else was working really hard on getting the snapping behavior "just right". I'm going to punt the rest of my real work for today and see if I can implement these changes in the current CVS -- what do people think, are these desired behaviors? If so, would a patch be well-received? Thanks for making such an amazing piece of software, ...Eric
