Thoughts about Patterns
by cedric
Hi everybody,
Working on the Edit Menu part of the Manual (done but in french only,
english version on CVS before end of July), i've made different tests on
clone and patterns. These are great functionnalities.
One may find pattern samples in the joined file. May be it could be
incorporated as a library (the same way markers did). I leave it to our
great developers.
But, if alloweded, some things appeared to be difficult for me :
- first of all : when creating many patterns, it is hard to remember the
creation order, so that i've been 'confused' in the fillsettings dialog.
Because there is no preview of the pattern in the dropdown menu, one may
wish to name the pattern without using XML editor (some don't like
coding!! or don't understand SVG at all) : may be the best could be to
make a dialog appear to enter a name just after using the Edit/tile command.
- second : The original object is set to rect filled with the pattern.
It is OK, but often, i don't need it anymore in the drawing. It could be
hidden.
- third : (and it is not due to pattern filling i think but) but when a
pattern is not used anymore, it is automatically cleared from defs. But
should I always really want to remove it ? The autoClean functionnality
is very good, but we may find rules about its use.
I will now be working on a Symbol (clone) Library. I'll see from
Sodipodi, I guess they've done may things this way since few months.
Thanks a lot.

Compiling libGC with c++ support
by Steven P. Ulrick
Hello, Everyone :)
While attempting to update Inkscape from CVS, I discovered the new
dependency on libgc. I eventually found what I think is the right
package: libGC-0.3-1.tar
After untarring it, I ran ./configure --help, and I found nothing about
how to compile libgc with c++ support. I proceeded to read README and
INSTALL in the libGC directory, and I found nothing helpful. I then
checked the Inkscape news groups, where I found references to the new
libgc dependency, references to compiling with c++ support, but nothing
about HOW to compile with c++ support. My next step was to subscribe to
this list and ask this question :)
I am running Fedora Core 2 with all official updates installed. This is
a full installation, not an upgrade, and I chose to install EVERY
package.
Also, the prefix that I am attempting to compile libgc for is the same
one that I am compiling Inkscape for: /usr
If I've left anything out, please let me know, and I'll be glad to
provide that information. For your information, I had been successfully
compiling Inkscape on this system up till and including my last attempt
preceding the addition of the libgc dependency.
Oooops, almost forgot the error message I get when I attempt to
configure Inkscape. I got the exact same message before and after my
attempts at installing libgc:
checking for GC_malloc in -lgc... no
configure: error: libgc (the Boehm Conservative Collector), built with C++ support, is needed to compile inkscape
In conclusion, my installation of libGC appeared to succeed, but since I
didn't know how to build it with C++ support, I got the error message
quoted above.
Anyway, let me know if you need any more information on this.

To outline?
by Karl Ove Hufthammer
I've looked, but couldn't find where the message 'Select some
paths to outline.' is used in the UI. The translators comment
says that '"to outline" means "to convert stroke to path"'.
Isn't this the same as the 'Convert stroke to path' command?
The reason I'm asking is that I'm wondering what words to use in
my translation.

Two small errors in 'Basic' tutorial
by Karl Ove Hufthammer
I'm currently translating the 'Basic' tutorial, and found two
small errors:
One place it says:
The commands to open dialogs are all in the Dialogs menu [...]
There are no such menu (anymore).
And near the top it talks about the 'Help | Keys and mouse'
menu-item, but the rest of the menu-items are written with a '>',
e.g. 'File > New'. It should be changed to be consistent.
(Personally I prefer a '|' everywhere. But perhaps there are style
guidelines for this in GNOME?)

New language
by Arpad Biro
Hi,
A new translation file, nn.po has been committed. I also
modified (inserted the "nn" language ID) configure.in and
po/Makefile.mingw. Please let me know if something else
needs to be done.

Subject: heartfelt thanks for creating inkscape
thanks a megabyte for your visionary work in creating inkscape. i
discovered this amazing software last week and have been talking it up
on various national email lists i'm on. (see below a message i sent
this evening to the list of Community Technology Centers' Network -
CTCNet), one of the largest nonprofit organizations working to bridge
the digital divide.)
CTCNet's annual conference is going to be in cleveland in june, 2005, in
case you (or any of the othe inkscape developers) might be in the area
at that time. it's likely more than 1000 technology access activists
will be attending this conference. stephen quinn is the wonderful
person organizing this conference. squinn@...468...
thanks again. you've inspired many by creating inkscape and your
creation will unleash a river of artistic creativity by many who cannot
afford a commercial vector drawing program.

To: "" <ctcmembers@...468...>
hi everyone -
is your organization doing cool things with low-cost or
no-cost graphics drawing software, such as
http://www.inkscape.org? if so, one way to get public visibility
for your pioneering work is to create some tutorials or articles
for the graphics section of about.com.
see
http://graphicssoft.about.com/library/nosearch/blucsubmit.htm
for example, tap into the creative talents of youth or
adults at your center to create some beautiful art using
inkscape. then use camtasia studio 2 (for windows) to create
some narrated flash tutorials explaining how others can use the
drawing tools in inkscape to create their own drawings. in these
tutorials explain both the technical use of the drawing tools and
explain artistic tips and techniques. people will be very
grateful to learn both kinds of knowledge.
create these tutorials in english and spanish, but also in
vietnamese, amharic and korean.
place these tutorials on the web and link to them from
your organization's web site. submit them to the about.com
graphics web site. after about.com accepts your submission (they
probably will if has merit), send out a press release that your
organization is helping to teach the world how to use open source
drawing software.
is there a journalist who would find it interesting to
write a story that explains how the youths and adults at a
nonprofit organization are creating knowledge to help unleash
creativity and empowerment for people worldwide using no-cost
software that anyone can use on donated computers? yes, i think
there is.
would a television station find it easy to do a news
story where there is readily available, beautiful graphics that
is an integral part of a story of community members teaching each
other things? yes, it would.
- phil
what kind of art can you create with vector drawing programs?
this gallery shows some nice examples.
http://www.eazydraw.com/gallery.htm
macromedia flash. adobe illustrator and macromedia freehand are
all vector drawing programs, too.
for extra credit points, organize a community event at a
community meeting place (outside of your own site) where a
no-cost workshop explains how to use a no-cost drawing programs.
an appropriate title for such an event would be: "drawing the
community together."
would local civic leaders take notice of such a workshop? yes,
they would.

Tablet + pen :)
Actually, the funny thing is that I did put in the code for mousewheel
to zoom into cursor point, and I have no idea why it does not work.
It's very simple, see the sp_desktop_zoom_relative_keep_point() call
in src/event-context.cpp line 517. The same function works OK for
zooming by middle-click (see line 380), it does zoom into cursor
point. Maybe the event->scroll.x/y fields are bogus for a wheel event.
If someone can have a look at it for me that would be nice.

For now, probably. I'm using version 2.1.5.
IIRC, the fix, basically, is to include <ft2build.h> before any other
freetype headers ... however, I am not sure whether that will break the
build with older freetype versions. :/
